Volume 14 Chapter 39 Declaration of Determination

*Kent’s Perspective
Upon arriving at the Abyss Gate, we found the ground around it deeply gouged, the marks clearly the result of the recent explosion. The sheer size of the crater left everyone silent, gasping in shock.
What could have caused this? And where is Rootless Weed?
We looked around, but aside from the massive gouge, there was only the Abyss Gate, its crack across space and time expanding ominously.
”No sign of enemies. Giuliana, Elia, I’m sorry, but can you search for Rootless Weed?”
””Understood.””
”Manon and the others, stay on standby. If enemies appear, shoot to kill immediately.”
”Got it, nya.”
Everyone scattered to search or keep watch, following my instructions. After a while, Giuliana called out near the Abyss Gate.
”Lord Kent! Something’s wrong! Come quickly! Hurry!”
Seeing Giuliana, usually so calm, so visibly upset, a bad premonition flashed through my mind. I immediately ran over to her. In the hollow, countless Guild cards belonging to Rootless Weed members were scattered.
No way… Iska, Rosalinda… they can’t be dead… This can’t be…
I knelt on the ground, picking up the Guild cards one by one. Familiar names leaped out at me, and my body trembled, though I wasn’t cold. The words on the cards blurred as my hands shook.
Heta… seriously… What will Renge do without you? I told you not to push yourself before we left… You idiot…
Guild cards are only ejected after their owner’s life functions cease. The fact that these cards were here meant the members of Rootless Weed, including Heta, were likely all dead. I picked up the last card, placed at the very back. The name engraved on it was Rosalinda Row.
”…Ro… Rosalinda… What happened? Why is Rosalinda’s Guild card here…? This doesn’t make any sense!”
”Lord Kent… we must face the truth… Rootless Weed was annihilated at the Abyss Gate. This pile of Guild cards tells everything… everything.”
I pressed Rosalinda’s Guild card to my cheek, but the coldness of the metal mercilessly confirmed she would never appear before me again. I’d sworn not to cry until the battle was over, but the emotions I’d held back broke free, and large tears fell from my eyes, wetting the ground.
”Rosalindaaaaaaaaaaa!!”
I struck the ground in frustration, but it was too late. Her body was already gone, perhaps vaporized by the earlier explosion. Deep sorrow tore through my chest, and I was overwhelmed by the urge to roll on the ground in agony, crying uncontrollably. I lay there, my body accepting the grief in its entirety.
”Damn it!! I should have been the one to step forward!! It’s my fault… Everyone… everyone died because of me!! I chose this fight…”
