Chapter 281-2 What’s Your Name?
Edited by: Kanaa-senpai
”Mr. Golarf? Are you still saying such things──”
”Please don’t get angry. I told you ‘do as you like,’ and I don’t mean to force you to kill. I just wanted you to know that there are options when things become desperate. Well, I understand that you are trying to choose another way, knowing this.”
”……”
It would be a lie to say that the thought of that option didn’t cross Golarf-san’s mind, even for a moment. Before knowing what was in the coffin, and after learning it, if she couldn’t suppress her anger, she might have had to decide to protect loved ones. But now, that is not the case.
”I have no intention of choosing that option, nor of making anyone else choose it. I won’t let anyone hurt this child, and I won’t let anyone hurt her.”
”I see… hearing that, I feel relieved.”
Golarf-san then fake-smiled and turned to walk away.
”Ah, wait a moment! I have something I want to ask Golarf-san.”
”Something you want to ask? What is it?”
”Her name. Now that I think about it, I haven’t asked yet.”
”Ah, her name, huh… I forgot it.”
”Yes?”
”I said I forgot it. Besides, names given by someone like a neglectful parent are less meaningful.”
”Again with that. Please act properly as a parent for once.”
”I no longer have the right to call myself her parent…”
”I’ve never heard of parents needing qualifications… where do they even issue those?”
”Listen, I’m serious──”
”Can you really throw away your child if you’re serious?”
”……”
”No matter how much you deny it, you are her parent. That fact no one can deny── not you, not this child.”
”Blood ties are not so important in this era, except among royalty and nobility. I personally trampled on the prayers I once put into myself. I can’t even call what I have done ‘calling’ anymore.”
”What? Aren’t you just lying that you forgot? Then what is this child’s name?”
”Your kind… is merciless, especially in times like this.”
”If you feel guilty about your actions, face them instead of running away. It is cowardly to escape with words like ‘I do not have the qualifications.’”
Golarf closed his eyes, thinking deeply about the words “face them instead of running away,” and fell silent──
”Hey Golarf, have you thought of a name for this child?”
”No, I haven’t. The child isn’t even born yet, so I haven’t thought about it.”
”Do elves think about names after they’re born? How about we think of one together now?”
”Sure, people in the village sometimes twist parts of their own names when choosing names for children, right?”
”Well, some parents do that, but most people twist names of famous things or people.”
”Famous things or people?”
”Yes, they name children with the wish ‘I want them to be like this in the future.’ So if you want them to be like yourself, you might twist your own name… Personally, I wouldn’t want our child to be like you, Golarf.”
”I agree with you. And I also wouldn’t want them to be like Rayla, rude and stubborn──Ouch! That hurts! No violence!”
”Who’s rude and stubborn?”
”It’s you, right!? Ugh, I’m pregnant, so please be gentle!”
”You say strange things. So, what about the name? If we’re not going to take it from our names, should we take it from Gran or Reina?”
”I like Gran’s personality as a friend, but I wouldn’t want it passed down to a child… I’d be happy if they turned out like Reina, but twisting Reina’s name might end up like twisting Rayla’s name, and I’m worried about that──Okay, stop getting ready to punch! Put your fists away!”
”Hmph, what kind of person’s name would you agree with then?”
”Well, I personally don’t like twisting names of famous people.”
”Why?”
”Those people are great, and I may respect many of them, but I think they must have had a lot of struggles and misfortune to get there. We might be spoken of in the same way in a few decades, and while that would be a great honor… I don’t want my child to experience the same struggles we did.”
”I see… Yes, we are definitely happy now. But this happiness came after losing many precious things. I want this child to have simpler, more normal happiness instead.”
”Yeah, so if I name this child──”
”Please take care of ‘Tris’.”
Golarf-san said no more and simply walked away.
Tris means “peaceful” in the language of spirits, I believe. I wonder if “peaceful” is a good name for a child. But thinking of Golarf-san’s life, the word “peaceful” seems deeply meaningful to him.
”Tris… yes, that’s a good name. Please take care, Tris.”
”?”
Tris, not recognizing her own name, tilted her head in wonder. I gently stroked her head. Tris closed her eyes happily and leaned into my hand.
”Neil, sorry for playing around, but we should go back soon. Diana and the others will worry.”
”Remember, time doesn’t flow the same way here as in that extra space.”
”Got it, we’re finished here today… Tris, I’ll come back, so wait patiently.”
I held Tris carefully and gently put her back into Gioniium’s coffin. I feel bad about locking her here. But if Tris could run around freely now, something terrible might happen. So I reluctantly closed the coffin lid.
Crafting the Magic Tool will still take time. Next, I’ll prepare a perfect door for the entrance of this Gioniium building so she can walk around inside.
”Neil, do you have a moment?”
”What is it, Lewya?”
”I want to talk a bit with Golarf before I leave. Please go ahead without me.”
”? Understood.”
I wondered what they would talk about. Seeing Lewya’s serious face, I thought it’s better not to ask too much. I decided to return to the mansion with Mei ahead of them.
Tris’s name comes from the Latin word “trivialis.”
