Volume 5 Chapter 15 The Guardian Of The Pond

Edited by: Kanaa-senpai

Turning back the way I came and heading to the royal capital, the road feels considerably shorter since I’ve traveled it before. I wonder if my actual travel speed has also increased?

Exiting the tunnel of the domain, it’s mostly downhill to the royal capital, but riding a horse makes downhill quite tough. If it were a mountain bike or something, I could ride down in one go via a reverse drop all the way to the capital.

I want to make a bicycle someday, but there are many issues like tires, chains, and brakes. Just descending mountain paths might omit the chain or crank, but I still want proper brakes and tires.

Mr. Zenom’s skill probably makes chains a breeze, but unfortunately, my master doesn’t like making many of the same parts. Probably on the chain links, he’ll lose interest after making less than a dozen and try to get me to do it.

The biggest current difficulty is the rubber tires. Other summoned heroes seem to be striving for rubber too. Everyone’s thinking the same thing, I hope they succeed.

I hope someday there will be a time when I can go cycling with Ms. Nina and the others. I can’t beat Ms. Nina at horseback riding, but on a bicycle, I think I have the upper hand. Probably.

The most active transportation in this world is probably carriages? There are ships too, but I haven’t seen one in motion. The barges moored in the canal and falling into disrepair seem unusable because of the pressure (force) from the Merchant Guild.

The theory is that ships have transport ability far beyond that of carriages, and they would take away the jobs of many merchants. Well, it’s just an unfounded claim. If the Merchant Guild took control of the canal’s rights, they’d probably change their stance the very next day. According to Bernstein Professor, ships were banned around the same time when upstream nations argued over salmon navigating the canal.

If the canal, which has been the artery of the royal capital since ancient times, becomes unusable, prices will surely rise, and the people working on ships will lose their jobs. The Merchant Guild really doesn’t do anything good.

Surprisingly, in this world, there exist flying machines similar to helicopters. They have a design like a twin-engine version of Da Vinci’s flying machine, and it seems they fly using magic.

When I first heard about it, I was excited thinking it was an airship. Unfortunately, it turned out to be impractical, a toy for nobles to play with for amusement.

Due to the existence of a skill called ‘Curse of the Sky,’ which makes things flying fall, flying in a flying machine is dangerous. Thanks to that, flying monsters aren’t that scary either.

It has almost no effect on light pixies. It can scare quails, though. Harpies seem to really dislike it. It doesn’t work on real dragons, but it seems to be quite effective on wyverns.

I wonder if it’s more effective on heavier creatures? I also wanted to fly like Peter Pan using magic, but I can’t afford to be shot down by ‘Curse of the Sky.’

If it doesn’t work on pixies or dragons, there seems to be a loophole. After all, it’s just about being dropped, so wouldn’t it be safe to fly just above the ground, close to the surface?

We slowly descended the hill to avoid hurting the horse’s hooves, and the day was already nearing dusk. Mr. Shirakaba’s horse’s horseshoe maintenance is sloppy, and despite being an empty horse, it insists on walking slowly. Should I just store this horse in the magic bag?

I don’t want to descend the mountain road at night with the horse, so I want to reach the Professor’s hatchery before it gets dark. The side road is coming up soon, but the sun is relentlessly setting as well. It’s a close call.

Just as we were about to arrive, the sun had completely set, but the horses still walked steadily. They seem to have better night vision than I expected.

After some ups and downs, we safely arrived at the hatchery, and it was just as it was when I used it a few days ago. I guess no one is interested in coming to such a place on purpose.

After removing the tack from the horse, it happily ruffled my hair. Once they get used to you, even normal horses are cute. I could fix Mr. Shirakaba’s horse’s horseshoes, but it would be better to have the proper tools for that. It’s probably better to leave it to a professional. Tomorrow, I’ll just store this one in the magic bag and take it home.

Well then, what should I make for tonight’s menu? I take out freshly cooked brown rice and hot quail white stew from the magic bag.

Being able to have warm meals without trouble while traveling alone is already divine power, but being able to store living creatures is just cheat level, isn’t it?

With a bit of creativity, I can probably use it effectively in various ways. If I store seriously injured people, I can transport them to the doctor without worsening their condition. If I contain elite soldiers and infiltrate enemy territory alone, surprise attacks might be possible. It could be very useful militarily too, right? This.

That’s right, maybe I should defrost those two here. It would be cruel to expose a teenage girl in that frozen state to the public.

Luckily, there seems to be a small room that looks like a guest bedroom. The bed is tidy, so this should be fine.

I take out the candles that I have been collecting little by little from the magic bag and light the candles on the candlestick. The candles are quite expensive and even Miss Floria doesn’t usually use them much.
