Volume 6 Chapter 4 Darwin Has Arrived

Edited by: Kanaa-senpai

Among the women Schulz gathered, there were many who weren’t human. He just liked to collect ‘beautiful women’ of all kinds.

I ended up having to take care of some of Schulz’s collection, and some of them are just plant-like monsters that look like humans. Of course, they aren’t actually human.

It depends on how you decide what makes someone human.

In this world, people say that creatures close to gods or spirits sometimes have children with humans.

For example, dragons are said to have had children with many different kinds of creatures, not just humans, creating all sorts of monsters.

Whether it’s true or not, many royal families are said to have been started by heroes with the blood of gods or dragons.

Beastmen, harpies, lamia, orcs, goblins, and others are said to have been born from the union of beasts, monsters, and humans.

There’s a big difference in how half-god heroes and hated creatures are treated, but the line between the two has often been unclear, depending on the time.

Centaurs were once thought of as beastmen, but now they’re seen as children of the gods of the wild and have gained a special place.

On the other hand, lamia, once believed to be children of snake gods and humans, have somehow ended up in the monster group over time.

From what I’ve learned, centaurs and lamia are beings changed by spirits, while beastmen are just humans with a lot of hair. Orcs and goblins, on the other hand, are the children of creatures made by the science of an old civilization.

The difference between humans and monsters probably has to do with politics, religion, and things like strength-based studies.

The secret of elves that Ms. Hóa talked about was also connected to the idea of what makes someone human.

It seems that elves, like orcs, were also a group created by divine beings and forced to be under them.

Among Schulz’s collection, there were also elves from that time.

Back then, both orcs and elves looked very similar and were both very beautiful.

But as they had children with humans and time passed, orcs and goblins became ugly. Elves, however, still look like they did back then.

It’s hard to say now if orcs changed because they were failures or for some other reason.

Right now, elves are thought of as less than human but have a high social standing. On the other hand, orcs are seen as ugly monsters.

Ms. Hóa says it’s scary how much people’s opinions can change once they know that both groups come from the same place.

”Does anyone care about such an old story? It’s no different from the idea that human and ape ancestors are the same.”

”What? Are the people of Earth apes?”

Ms. Hóa looks shocked in a bad way. Does she need an explanation based on the idea of evolution?

”To put it simply, humans came from apes, and then elves and orcs were made from humans. So, in the beginning, everyone was an ape.”

Huh? Now that I think about it, are the divine humans the kind that came from Earth? If not, this story would be a lie.

Since children can be born between summoned Heroes and the people of this world, I think our roots must be the same—we’re all Homo sapiens.

”How dare you say I am the child of apes? That cannot be. That simply cannot….”

Ms. Hóa seemed deeply shocked by the theory of evolution. It looks like she really can’t accept that humans are descended from apes.

”If that story were true, even the secrets of the elves would pale in comparison. How terrifying! You must not speak of this carelessly in public.”

Come to think of it, when Mr. Darwin first published his theory, the church called it heresy and caused a big fuss.

Considering that this world summons Heroes but still doesn’t know about evolution, it must be seen as an extremely dangerous idea here.

But wait—if evolution has such a big impact, couldn’t we use it to overshadow the elves’ secrets?

The problem is, evolution doesn’t explain things like dragons, spirits, or the descendants of gods.

Maybe I could make up some convenient theory that covers everything…?

No, that wouldn’t work. Even if a lie helps for a while, lies just pile up.

The theory of evolution had its flaws, but it’s still in textbooks today because it follows a scientific approach.

You can’t compare a fraud to a real scientist.

”Most people in this world can’t even read their own writing. Even if it’s the truth, recklessly sharing Earth’s knowledge is far too dangerous.”

Like the forbidden fruit in Eden, sometimes ignorance is bliss. Especially in this world, where keeping people ignorant seems to be the norm.

 ”So it’s no good, huh?”

”If people learn that Heroes descended from apes, fools will use it as an excuse to enslave and mistreat them.”

Why would they think that? Oh, right—some would twist evolution to say, “We’re descended from gods and dragons, but Earthlings are just ape-spawn!”

”I don’t want to see a war between summoned Heroes and humans. If that happens, it’ll just create a new Demon King.”

There are thousands of summoned Heroes. If they united, they could easily destroy a country or two.

And if they became enemies, humans would label them as Demonfolk.

If current Heroes turned into Demon Kings, they’d probably summon new Heroes to fight them.

”Hey, is the current Demon King a dark elf or something?”

I asked on a whim. I’ve read manga where fallen elves become dark elves, and I remember a girl like that in Schulz’s collection.

”They are a clan that broke away from us. Even if humans perish, the bloodline of elves will survive.”

So they split into factions to preserve their bloodline? Like the Sanada clan’s survival strategy… The elves must have their own struggles.

”Now that I think about it, our kin who slept for ages were also seeds for the future. Perhaps it is fate that you and they will build a new world together.”

Strictly speaking, they weren’t sleeping, but…

And when is this supposed to happen? Judging by the conversation, it’s after the elves and dark elves are gone.

”Uh, no thanks. That’s not really my style.”

”If you wish it, you could take them as wives. Isn’t an elf-girl harem every Earthman’s dream?”

Where does Ms. Hóa get these weird ideas about Earth?

A harem does sound nice—being pampered by multiple girls—but it’d be exhausting.

For nobles here, having many wives is a status symbol, but from what Tizzy says, it’s a lot of trouble.

Honestly, monogamy seems way more practical.

”Hmph. Why that face? Do you dislike women?”

In this world, disliking women means people assume you like men.

If rumors spread, some pretty elf-boy might try to seduce me—and that’d be problematic.

”N-No, that’s not it! I’m just not that popular.”

I’m not particularly charming, rich, or powerful.

Lately, I have had more luck with women, but it’s just coincidence—not some sudden “popular phase.”

If I got cocky, Ms. Nina would probably laugh at me.

”True. If you tried to woo a woman, she’d just be confused.”

Ah, Ms. Hóa is grinning. Seems like the serious talk is over—what a relief.

If I’d slipped up, I might’ve been erased.

”Still, if a woman like that ignored you, she’d resent it. Even if she flirts, don’t assume it’s real.”

”I won’t! That just sounds like she’s playing with me.”

”But once a bond forms, you’re surprisingly strong. Being around you is… strangely comfortable.”

That just means I’m nice guy material. The dreaded “let’s just be friends” zone.

Is that a compliment? Well, having trust without romance isn’t so bad.

In the end, according to Ms. Hóa, the only one in Schulz’s collection safe to release is the Beast God.

I thought it was a fox beastman, but apparently, it’s a local deity.

The delivery point is the Wolf Forest, so I’ll stop by next time I’m nearby.
