Volume 14 Chapter 63 Extra: Quenelra’s Chief Of Staff’s Parenting Diary

*Quenelra’s perspective
For several months, everyone had been busy fighting against monsters from another world.
My job kept me extremely busy.
King Shifa’s important order led to young Julius becoming a Sergeant in the Kingdom’s army. He took over Arbalest’s role, and this changed my job too.
Back to work, Letticia became Julius’s helper and second-in-command. I was made the Kingdom military tent staff chief──a job where I had to do all sorts of tasks.
In the army, the staff chief plans and organizes many things, helps leaders, and manages complex work. But my job was to do everything, no matter what.
I handled arguments, requests, and talks from different people. I explained them to King Shifa and other leaders, and I divided the army’s money.
If there had been an older, experienced person, I wouldn’t have been so busy. But with only young Julius and Letticia, I couldn’t stand up to the experienced Kingdom leaders, so my work just kept growing.
That old man… maybe this was his own kind of trouble….
I’ve been sleeping only about 2 hours each day, but with help from Chancellor Aldo and King Shifa, the Kingdom’s army, which was badly hurt in the monster fight, was slowly getting better.
During this time, my wife Elza had a baby, a healthy boy. We named him Arbalest Jr.
I kept the promise I made to the old man during the monster fight, but Arbalest Jr. is very energetic, which is a bit tiring.
Still, having a child gives me energy.
No matter how tired I am when I come home, just seeing my wife and child’s faces helps me work hard again the next day.
If the old Arbalest hadn’t helped me when I was upset after being scolded by my father-in-law during the Travers Incident, I think I would have died somewhere alone.
When I thought about it, I realized that friendships are truly strange and powerful.
”Chief Quenelra, you have a meeting next, right?”
The male secretary brought me back to work as I was lost in my thoughts, trying to escape.
On my desk, where I was very good at office work, a huge pile of unfinished papers had built up.
Even though I was very good at office work, the amount of work as the Kingdom’s staff chief was more than I expected.
”What’s the next meeting about?”
”Ah, yes. It’s about how many snacks should be given at the army camp.”
Crack.
The pen I was holding broke in half.
No matter how many jobs I do, I think it’s wrong to decide about snacks at the army camp.
I glared at the male secretary who told me this.
”Cancel it. I won’t go to such a meeting. Demote the person in charge and lower their pay.”
”Huh? Ah, yes. Then, what about the meeting on the police uniform rules in the capital, and the meeting on how to salute in the army?”
Crack.
The pen that broke in half shattered into tiny pieces.
The male secretary looked at me in fear.
Neither of these meetings was important enough for a real meeting.
In other words, they were meetings just for the sake of having meetings.
”Do the same for the organizers of these two meetings!! With that, today’s schedule is cleared.”
”Um, there’s also… a meeting to decide how to take care of the army’s equipment…”
”Enough! All meetings today are canceled. Let the assistants or department heads talk about it. If any more small meetings come to me, I’ll send them all away.”
I was angry at the huge number of pointless meetings.
Even though I put my trained workers in different jobs, there weren’t enough people, and these small tasks kept coming like an avalanche.
Half of the papers on my desk were unimportant and not worth thinking about.
These papers, even if thrown into the fire and burned, would not hurt the Kingdom’s army.
Old man… I understand why you wanted more people now… This is very stressful.
Now that I’m in a job close to the old Arbalest, I’m in a bad spot where I can understand why he was so stressed.
”You’re getting wild, aren’t you, Chief Quenelra?”
The one who entered the room was Julius, who was now a sergeant.
He’s good as a leader in battle, but when it comes to office work, he’s worse than a cat, so I let him focus on army tasks.
Thanks to that, he’s in a job where he can do what he likes, his face looks happy, and he seems full of energy.
”Sergeant Julius. Please let me hit you once to feel better.”
Because we fought together on the same battlefield, we can talk casually, even with our job titles.
”That would be a problem. If the sergeant has a bruise on his face, people will ask what happened.”
”Then, I’ll take a few days off to take care of my child. Please handle these papers. All of them.”
I showed Julius the papers on my desk and quickly started to leave.
I feel it’s his duty to lead the new army system for helping parents with children, which must be used by important workers.
It’s not running away from the enemy.
”Huh? Huh?”
”Well, Julius is still single, so it’s okay if you don’t go home for about 3 days. Look, you can also work with that male secretary over there. He’s single too. If you both work like your lives depend on it, it’ll end. It will end.”
I sat Julius at his desk and looked at the male secretary, who was watching with a pale face, seeming ready to die.
He, with a pale face as if ready to die, nodded with a gulp.
”Then, I’ll leave the rest to you. I will take care of Arbalest Jr., so don’t call me unless it’s an emergency.”
I left the rest to Julius and the male secretary and went home to my beloved wife and son.
When I returned to the office after 3 days off, both of them looked like they had given everything and were tired, but thanks to that, I felt refreshed.
Julius, who took this lesson to heart, told the whole army that unnecessary meetings and papers would be punished. Under my leadership, we succeeded in making meetings and office work simpler, giving me time to enjoy with my beloved son and wife.
