What was supposed to be Kono-senpai’s trial club activity ended up being about Haruto’s ability verification and Sanpei-sensei’s romance scam story.
Thanks to Akane keeping an eye on things, Kono-senpai’s part went smoothly.
”By the way, Haruto, did you sign up for driving lessons?”
”Oh, right! I need to do that!”
Recently, Haruto, Akane, Harue, and Yui had a video call at Akane’s apartment. During the call, they discussed Haruto’s driving lessons, and he decided to sign up.
”Want me to come with you after this?”
”Yeah, thanks!”
Summer break is approaching, and Haruto plans to return home during that time. He intends to attend driving school then, but even if he passes everything on the first try, it’ll be tight. So, he’s starting lessons now to get his license by mid-summer break before heading home.

”I’d like to sign up for a driver’s license.”
”Thank you. Have you decided on the class?”
”Yes, no restrictions, please!”
In Haruto’s past life, licenses were:
- First-class license: For driving cars or motorcycles on public roads.
- Second-class license: For commercial transportation.
These remain the same, but the vehicle types changed:
- Manual Transmission (MT): No longer exists.
- Automatic Transmission (AT): Now standard for all vehicles.
Currently, licenses are:
- Self-Driving (Limited): Equivalent to AT in Haruto’s past life.
- Autonomous-Driving (Unrestricted): Allows full automation but requires the driver to stay in the driver’s seat, avoid distractions like phones, and be ready to take manual control in emergencies.
A century ago, when autonomous driving was introduced, issues arose. If driving is automated, what does the driver do? Use their phone? Read? Engage in other activities? But if the driver isn’t actively driving, what’s the point of a license? Laws were enacted to address this, requiring drivers to remain in the seat and stay alert.
As a result, countries enacted laws requiring drivers to stay in the seat, even during autonomous driving. Additional restrictions were implemented to ensure drivers remain alert and ready to intervene when necessary.
”That completes your registration.”
After signing up, Haruto will start lessons tomorrow. On the way back, he and Akane discussed the cost.
”How much was it?”
”560,000 yen…”
”Same for me. It’s so expensive!”
”It used to be 200,000 yen.”
”When was that?!”
”Over 100 years ago!”
”That’s ancient!”
For context, in Haruto’s parents’ time (around 1950), driving school cost about 100,000 yen, though the value of money was different then.
