Chapter 96 Romance Brain
Edited by: Kanaa-senpai
Romance Scam.
This is a special kind of scam where someone meets a person on social media or similar sites, tricks them, and takes their money.
But have you ever wondered why some people fall for this?
Why can’t they see it’s a scam? Didn’t they notice something was wrong along the way?
Actually, some people are more likely to fall for romance scams.
This is because of something called Romance Brain.
People with Romance Brain get infatuated easily and think about things mostly in terms of love.
This happens because certain chemicals in their brain are released.
Another factor is ADHD (Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder).
ADHD is a developmental disorder caused by how the brain works.
It also makes people more likely to get infatuated with love.
These symptoms can be mild or severe.
Often, people think it’s just part of their personality, so they don’t realize they have it.
Also, people who’ve had brain injuries from accidents or illnesses might start thinking in a love-centered way.
So, what about Sanpei-sensei, who’s in front of Haruto?
Haruto is still studying, so he can’t tell for sure yet.
But right now, Sanpei-sensei has a lot of dopamine being released, so it’s likely she has Romance Brain.
ADHD makes it hard to control this release, and it’s usually low in daily life, from what he has read.
(Is this why I felt uncomfortable when she talked?)
But don’t get me wrong.
Falling in love isn’t a bad thing.
Some people might not like getting infatuated easily, but the real problem is that there are people who trick them.
He doesn’t know exactly who romance scams target, but Haruto feels they’re tricking people on purpose.
(If the brain chemicals are stopping calm judgment, it should be okay if I talk while controlling that.)
While still holding Haruto’s shoulder, Sanpei-sensei’s arm was gently held by Haruto, and he used his ability.
In an instant, the extra dopamine was brought back to normal.
”Sanpei-sensei, let’s set aside your feelings for him and think calmly for a moment.”
”Eh, yes…”
”What I find strangest is that you transferred the money! Normally, you’d go to a clinic, get treated, and then pay, right?”
”Y-yeah, that’s true… but maybe there were some reasons…”
”Didn’t you ask him about those reasons?”
”No, I didn’t.”
”If you’re going to marry him, shouldn’t you have talked about those reasons properly?”
”Now that you mention it, I guess that’s true…”
”And isn’t it strange that he stopped contacting you right after you sent the money?”
”…Eh, yes.”
Sanpei-sensei’s reaction started to change.
It seemed like she was slowly understanding the situation.
”Do you still have the messages from him?”
”Well… probably?”
”Do you have the receipt from when you paid?”
”I-if I check my records, I’ll know…”
People with a love-focused mindset fall in love easily and think in terms of love, as he explained.
But there’s more to it.
They’re also laid-back about things that aren’t related to love.
After talking more, Sanpei-sensei also started to think he was suspicious.
But she didn’t want to report it to the police.
After all, she was a university lecturer.
She probably didn’t want people to know she’d been scammed.
Plus, Haruto hadn’t completely fixed Sanpei-sensei.
If she left Haruto, her brain chemicals would likely start releasing again, and she’d go back to how she was before.
But Haruto had thought about this with Kono-senpai too.
Even though he only learned about her condition, he thought it was good because it helped him figure out how to approach her in the future.
(They say love is a sickness, but it’s sure a troublesome one.)
Right now, Haruto can only temporarily normalize the release…
No, to be exact, he’s only thinking that way.
