Volume 6 Chapter 14 The Eye Of The Cyclops

Edited by: Kanaa-senpai

Shaken by Ms. Claire’s back and led by Ms. Uruu, they quickly ran through the Wolf Forest.

Looking back, training with the spear and blacksmithing felt like a big detour. But it’s amazing—not even a day has passed in this world. The time difference in the alternate space is like a super cheat.

This effect only works in the alternate space, but if used with the Fountain of Youth, you could live a very long time. Luckily, you don’t suddenly age when you return to normal space.

If I had this cheat in Japan, I could’ve played games all day and avoided cramming for tests. Maybe I could’ve been the best at both studies and sports.

But Mr. Escalion says most people waste time even if they have a lot. He said it in a self-deprecating way. When I replied, “Youth is easily lost, but learning is hard,” he was impressed. I’m not sure if he’s arrogant or humble.

I get it, though. Even with this space, I’d probably just play games instead of studying. But in the alternate space, there’s no internet. Still, I could play offline games.

Maybe people only act when they’re cornered. Mr. Escalion aside, I’m definitely just an ordinary person.

These alternate spaces weren’t made by dwarves; they just manage the ruins left by divine beings. Schulz’s nest was similar, and there are probably more unknown ones.

Mr. Gino said I can freely enter and exit the dwarves’ ruins. He even gave me a miniature of this planet with teleportation gate coordinates.

This artifact is called the Eye of the Cyclops.

At first glance, it looks more like a giant eyeball than a planet model. Most of the planet is ocean, with a round continent floating like a pupil.

There are 2 round continents separated by a large circle, with a long lake resembling a cat’s eye. From space, it would look like a giant eyeball.

It’s a strange design—definitely an artificial planet. Nature can create amazing things, but an eyeball seems impossible. Earth once had a single round continent, but it wasn’t as perfectly circular as this.

This planet is called Aratos, but sometimes people use “Aratos” to refer to a round continent or just the human-controlled area.

Basically, Aratos means “our world.” For those who don’t know about continents or planets, their knowledge of this world is probably everything.

The cat’s eye-like part, called the Inner Sea, is a giant saltwater lake on the equator. It divides the 2 crescent-shaped continents into north and south, but they’re connected by a narrow isthmus, like the Americas. The isthmus is only a few kilometers wide, so building a canal might be easy. But since the outer sea is too rough for ships, there’s no point.

By the way, humans live on the northern continent, while the southern continent is called the Demonfolk Continent. But it’s unclear if Demonfolks actually live there. Some even think Japan or Earth itself is somewhere on the Demonfolk Continent. For them, the otherworld and the Demonfolk Continent are the same.

Even on the northern continent, humans control less than ten percent. The rest is unexplored. Humans only live along the Inner Sea’s coast. I wonder how far Wall Barley extends. If it stays in human territories, it’s fine, but if it spreads to primeval forests, it’d be a biohazard.

The Eye of the Cyclops I received is made of brass, about the size of a beach ball. It’s hollow, so it’s not heavy, but it’s fragile and needs careful handling.

The surface is intricately carved with mountains and rivers, but they’re copies of the original divine instruments and differ from the current topography. Still, mountains don’t move much, so it’s practical for borders.

If you look closely, there are tiny mithril pins marking teleportation gate locations.

Unfortunately, the gates are mostly in human-controlled areas, so you can’t visit the magic continent. Still, instantly traveling to different countries is amazing. Crossing borders usually requires permits, but as a Hero, I should manage. Maybe I’ll take a sightseeing trip once Ms. Nina gets better. She loves traveling, so she’d be happy.

The pin positions are important. There’s a gate near the old Toyata village, buried in rubble. I want to secure it first. There are also pins in Duke Mineley’s territory, so I can visit Schulz and Ms. Shirakaba quickly.

* * *

This planet is slightly smaller than Earth, but it’s roughly the same size. The round continent is a bit larger than Africa. The rest is all sea, so it’s almost a water planet.

The Professor knows maps well, so he could calculate accurate areas from the Eye of the Cyclops. If people knew it’s a planetary instrument, everyone would want it. There are quite a few in nearby places.

I saw some displayed in the royal palace garden like Costa Rica’s stone spheres, and a large one by the botanical garden entrance. There were various sizes in Schulz’s treasure vault.

Most people see it as just a decoration, and most in the royal palace were imitations of monster eyeballs. Unless they’re original divine creations or intricate replicas, they’re worthless as models.
