Humans lost.”
The sinking sun painted the sky orange right in front of him.
A huge shadow floated on the horizon, flickering like flames as it got closer.
”All we can do is raise our middle fingers and taunt them before we die.”
On the castle wall, he threw out his twisted words, like always.
The people around him didn’t brighten or darken at hearing them.
They just stared at the hell ahead, their hands shaking for real.
What was coming was a magic beast big enough to cover the land.
They faced only a small fortress and a handful of soldiers.
Despair wrapped around them like a thick fog.
”No. You—you will save everyone from this crisis.”
The woman standing behind him spoke quietly from half a step back.
Her words were soft but strong, a steady support.
”You’re the true hero. Not a hero, not a saint. Without any power, you’ve come this far.
You are the guide for the innocent people.”
”Everyone believes in you, Sir Klock. Don’t worry, I’ll protect you no matter what!”
When he looked back, the two were smiling.
A woman, even though she was Demonkin, had followed him—the enemy—until the end.
A girl, though she was Beastkin, helped him in his crisis and promised to stay.
A spy, a ninja, and a thief.
Hard to explain the mix. They three aren’t good at standing up front.
But he thought he found good partners.
Without them, Klock would be dead long ago.
”Hey, hey. Don’t worry. I’m ready for anything already.
What worries me is you guys—you’re all useless without me.”
Answering their trust, he cracked his neck, crack, crack.
No, he was just trying to look cool.
”Huh? What are you saying? You’re weak. Can’t even live without a woman. Let me fix that. You’re worth less than a pill bug. A useless, cheating, scumbag loser. Please die as pathetic as you can tonight.”
”Geez, Sir Klock, acting all cool suddenly! Mii-Mii will protect you till the end, so don’t worry! Hey, hey, did you think I was cute? Did you want me close forever? Geez, Sir Klock—”
As he focused and got ready, a tsukkomi came from behind.
A demon woman showing disbelief with half-closed eyes, and
a Beastkin girl wagging her tail cutely.
Trying not to stumble, he patted their heads casually.
”Let’s talk again once this is over.”
Saying that lightly, he turned his back.
A quick separate action.
First, finish the task in front of him.
This is daily life.
On the way apart, a face that looked like it might cry stayed in his mind.
They probably expect the end.
That this will be the last.
”Even though I’m not the type, I get fired up.”
Seeing that face, he can’t lose.
He’ll win big and show a smug victory.
Then, he wants to see their usual amazed looks again.
After that—
”Attack!!!”
Just minutes later.
When Klock gave the signal, shouts burst out all at once from the city walls.
The full attack. The refugees’ resistance battle.
A thunderous sound that will change the world echoed.
A place with no hero.
A desperate battle began at a small castle, isolated and helpless, against the Demon Lord’s army.
Character Notes:
• Mii-Mii – Mina. A Beastkin girl who follows Klock. Loyal, cheerful, and protective, she constantly teases him but promises to stay by his side until the end. Her tail wagging is a signature trait.
