Volume 1 Chapter 2-2 Unjustified Revenge

Edited by: Kanaa-senpai

 ”Huh? What is it?”

A woman’s voice suddenly called out to him.

When he noticed, four figures were walking straight toward him.

From their long hair and how they carried themselves, they all seemed to be women.

The two in front had swords. The two behind wore robes.

Looking at their outfits and the feeling they gave off, they seemed like an adventurer party.

”──I believe you are Klock Livorno.”

One of the women said his full name.

She was the one in front. It was dark, so he couldn’t see her well, but something about her felt very beautiful.

He thought about that for a brief moment—too carefree, considering the situation.

 ”…What do you want?”

Sharp bloodlust came from the group.

Klock’s hand moved to the knife at his waist without thinking.

His back leg slid a half step back to make space between them.

”What do you want from me?”

 ”…”

He tried asking again, just to check their reaction.

But they didn’t answer. Their faces were hidden in shadow.

Still, he could feel it—they looked at him like he was prey.

A warning bell rang in his head.

These people weren’t friendly. That much was clear.

So, he’d run away from enough strong opponents to know.

That instinct he’d built just to survive told him this was bad.

 ”Hey. Say something.”

”I am… the one called the Hero. I came to kill you.”

 ”…Huh?”

The words hit like a hammer.

 A straight-up death sentence.

He drew the knife from behind his waist.

He pointed the blade at them, sending out the kind of violent pressure you’d expect from a street beast.

”The Hero… you mean Hero Anna? You? Why would the Hero be here to kill me?”

Hero Anna. A living legend. A Hero not seen in hundreds of years.

The face of humanity, and the chosen one. The one sent to defeat the Demon Lord.

She is a divine figure. Someone far too big for a nobody like Klock to get involved with.

Now, his hands stayed firm, blade raised. But inside, he was shaken.

He glared at them, trying to hide how thrown off he was.

But none of the four in front of him looked like they’d back down.

”I’ve been looking for you—to settle a grudge.”

”…A grudge? What did I do to you?”

He said it without thinking. His voice sounded surprised.

He didn’t remember anything like that.

Well—maybe there were lots of people who hated him, but it depended on the situation.

Pickpocketing. Theft. Breaking into places. R*pe.

He lived by stealing. Of course people hated him.

But he never made mistakes bad enough to get caught in the kingdom.

If he had, he wouldn’t still be walking around the royal capital.

”…I don’t remember. Maybe you got the wrong person.”

He threw it out there. Maybe it was someone else.

Because he really couldn’t remember. That was all he could say.

Even if it was him, it might’ve been a mix-up.

The way she said his full name made him uneasy—but he decided to ignore that.

”…Do you know the Baron Croce family?”

 ”Baron… Croce?”

 What did that mean?

 Croce. Croce… Croce…?

He repeated the word in his head, trying to find anything.

It sounded familiar—but he couldn’t pin it down.

He never stole from nobles. Not even lower ones.

Too risky, and not worth it.

Unless it happened by accident—but nobles usually had a look and vibe that made it obvious.

”Sorry, but I’ve never messed with nobles.”

He waved his hand and said it with confidence.

Acting suspicious would just make things worse.

The best move was to sound sure of himself and deny everything.

”Sorry. I’m not the one. Well, good luck—”

He turned to leave before things got messy.

He tried to walk away, easy and calm, disappearing into the night, but—

 ”…I see.”

 Her voice dropped low.

 He could hear the disappointment.

Smooth and quiet, her hand moved to her waist.

 ”…Huh?”

Suddenly, he felt death creep up behind him.

 He backed off without thinking.

 A flash—sharp, silver light—reflected in his eyes.

”Hey, wait! I really don’t know anything!!”

 A sword was drawn.

It moved faster than he could follow and blocked the way in front of him.

 Way too fast. Not human.

He didn’t even see when she pulled it out.

 Holy hell—this woman…!!

 She was the real thing.

Her hair swayed a little. She stood still, calm, not saying a word.

The one with the sword didn’t move after that.

Again, he felt her stare. Like she was deciding something.

She could kill him anytime, and that feeling was strong.

She moved like someone with skill far beyond his own—handling trash.

”I swear, I don’t know anything!! This is just a mistake!! Let’s calm down, okay?! We should talk first.”

He held both hands out in front of him.

His voice was calm. The girl looked like the cute type, so maybe—just maybe—he could talk his way out of this.

But she was strong. And she didn’t look like she had any mercy, either.

He felt cold sweat running down his back.

”Uh… hey, that Klock guy. Do I really look that much like him? I mean, there’s gotta be stuff that’s different, right?”

He blurted out whatever came to mind.

 The air turned quiet again.

He tried his best to convince her, but the girl didn’t answer.
