Volume 1 Chapter 2-3 Unjustified Revenge

Edited by: Kanaa-senpai

Without saying anything, she glared at him. It felt like she was blaming him for some crime.

 A soft wind passed by.

She had that kind of strong air — the kind that didn’t bend for anything. It made his spine shrink. His fear tightened inside.

 …No, this was bad.

 Someone say something. Please.

If no one speaks, this won’t go anywhere.

His lips began to dry out.

A small chill brushed his cheek. It carried a strange mix of fear and irritation, like the start of a nightmare.

He might die in three seconds.

The thought of her suddenly cutting him down made his legs twitch to run.

But if he turned now, he felt like he really would die.

He had to stay calm. Somehow make it through.

If everything went right, he’d escape the royal capital as fast as possible.

Then, he looked behind the hero.

Three women stood back there. They were watching everything. Probably her party members. He couldn’t see their faces, with the moon behind them, but none of them moved.

Did that mean the hero could take care of everything on her own?

 …Alright. He would beg.

 Yeah, that was the plan.

Heroes should have some sympathy, right?

He would try to talk his way out of this. Even if he didn’t know what crime she was talking about, maybe someone in her group would take pity.

Not all fights needed blades. She should understand that too.

 Persuasion = listening.

He’d listen to her side. He’d show he was sorry. Try to act like he understood her pain.

After all, he couldn’t fight her, and he couldn’t run.

So he’d aim for something else — maybe weaken her will to fight.

 ”…sniff…”

Just when he opened his mouth, something odd happened.

 She sniffed.

 ”As I thought… it was just a game…”

White hair slipped out from under her hood. It moved with the wind.

That killing air around her changed to something harder to name.

She wiped her eyes with the hand not holding the sword.

Then, something thick and sharp started pouring from her — not magic, not killing intent. Something deeper.

”…I can’t forgive this. Croce lost his land, his name. His home burned down. You left me. I stayed inside the mansion and burned with it. I had nothing left. But the worst part… the worst part is how you played with my feelings.”

Her voice grew sharper with every word.

 Her hand trembled.

Played with…? That’s where this was going?

But he didn’t remember anything like that. Croce? Some noble? He didn’t mess with nobles. Didn’t even talk to them.

He didn’t know this girl either.

Burned? Died? What was she even talking about?

”Wait, wait! I don’t know you! I didn’t abandon anyone! And you’re alive, aren’t you? You’re saying things that don’t make sense!”

”The only reason I’m alive is because Goddess Teekua saved me after I died. I was reborn with the title of hero. My old name was Sylvia Croce. A foolish girl… who you threw away.”

 ”…Huh?”

Rebirth? What was this, a bedtime story?

Her eyes were sharp, like she wanted to slap him with her stare.

Not a sword — something worse. Klock stood there, his mouth open.

”…So you came back for revenge? Because of something I did in a past life…?”

What kind of joke was this?

She might as well say she was selling a magic pot.

All these “past life lover” scams — he’d heard them before.

”Uhh… let’s calm down, okay? This is a misunderstanding. I’ve never met a Croce or Sylvia. I’ve heard enough of these past-life lines already. …If you’re selling something, try someone younger, yeah?”

”I’ve been thinking about you ever since I came back. Every time I remember you turning your back on me, my chest hurts so bad I can’t stand it… Klock, you took everything. You don’t even remember me.”

 ”H-huh? No… I mean…”

Trying to calm her made things worse.

It sounded like he was saying he forgot her — or worse, never cared.

But she knew his full name.

Did that mean she really knew him?

 Or was she mistaken?

He couldn’t remember anything. Who was Sylvia?

 He took a step back.

His brain was blank. He had nothing to say.

Her pressure alone made his body move backward.

Then, she took a step forward. As if to close the space again.

 No, no, no, please no.

She was the hero, right? She had better things to do. Like fighting the Demon Lord.

She didn’t need to worry about something like a past life breakup.

 ”Hey, Klock!”

A voice called out behind him.

It was familiar. Casual. Like nothing was wrong.

”…Klock, the guards are— Wait, are you in the middle of something?”

 ”Huh? Ah, yeah… just a little…”

 It was Zol and Heysl.

His drinking buddies from earlier at the bar.

They walked up, frowning when they saw the drawn blades.

Well, yeah. Klock had a sword out in the middle of the street. It looked real bad.

 ”Hey, hey, this looks serious.”

”No… she said I abandoned her or something.”

”Oh, then it’s your fault. Just take the hit.”

”No! No, it’s not like that! It’s a big misunderstanding. I swear—!”

 Finally, a reinforcements.

 Maybe they’d help.

That selfish thought came out of nowhere.

 …Oh?

 Zol. That skill of his…

 Suddenly, something clicked.

There might be a way out of this.

If this worked, he might actually survive.

Klock smiled inside — a small, pitiful hope.
