Volume 3 Chapter 28-2 Encounter

Karin’s POV
”Hey, Master. I really can’t walk anymore. Let’s find a place to sleep around here today.”
”Hmph. I don’t remember having a disciple who complains this much, Karin.”
About three weeks had passed since we left the Imperial Capital. The straight distance to Suicelma territory is over 1,000 kilometers. But using the map Mr. Melset gave me and walking through strange Imperial lands, I must have taken a wrong turn. I’m sure we made a big detour.
We were deep in the mountains and forests. The sun had set long ago. But because my portable led was charged, I could still see my feet a little.
”Karin, where are we?”
”Umm, Master, we’re already outside the map Mr. Melset drew for me. I don’t really know. I think we went far south…”
”Is that so? Then we just need to head north!”
”That’s why, Master, it’s already so dark. Let’s rest now. I can find direction by the morning sun. Also, look, it’s almost time for our regular contact!”
”Haha, then we have no choice. I’ll find us a place to rest. You handle the contact.”
Master Sharlin said that and walked into the bushes without even holding his Tomori. His night vision must be as good as a cat’s.
I took out a small machine from my backpack. This was not a magic communicator. There should be no relay stations within 1,000 kilometers. And if no one listens on the other end, you can’t call anyone. But this was a shortwave radio made specially for me by Mr. Dwarf Engineer.
Mr. Dwarf Engineer said the radio only works one way. But the radio waves reach no matter how far. The Melon Laboratory’s generator in Sir Yōmo’s territory sends regular broadcasts to us. Okay, the radio sensitivity is good today too!
Before long, Master Sharlin came back with a rabbit in his hand.
”How was it, Karin? Did you make contact?”
”Nothing important. But Mr. Melset set up the relay well. It’s good to get news from the capital every day.”
”I see. She’s useful after all. So?”
”Mr. Melset is tracking Ms. Reina. She found several places near the capital Ms. Reina might visit. She’s checking them one by one… That’s all.”
”That’s helpful. We can’t do that alone. Communication from Reina to the kingdom has been cut off for a long time. Let’s trust Mr. Melset’s work.”
”Well then, Master, the contact is done. Where will we sleep tonight?”
”Don’t rush. I’ll roast this rabbit first. There’s a small cave a bit further. That will be our place.”
Before she finished, Master Sharlin started peeling the rabbit’s skin.
”Ahh, I miss my bed… even a straw bed is fine.”
”Don’t say that. You won’t get a feast like this often.”
She handed me a roasted rabbit thigh. As I bit into it, the bushes behind us cracked with a rustle.
”!?” We both stood up quickly and took fighting stances.
”What is it? A beast? But this presence… Karin, don’t make a sound.”
I could tell Master Sharlin was confused.
Rustle, rustle. Something moved in the bushes, trying to leave. I thought maybe we should not get involved. But before I could relax, Master Sharlin jumped into the bushes, blocking the path with her sword.
”Fugyuh!?” A strange sound, neither voice nor scream, came out.
”Karin, it’s okay now. I have it under control.”
”Master, are you okay? Did you kill it?”
”No… but this one… Karin, bring the light here.”
I hurried to take my portable led and lit the ground near my feet. Then I walked into the bushes to Master Sharlin.
She stood under a big tree’s shadow, holding her greatsword pointed down. At the tip… eh?! A human? Looking closely, he was a boy about my age.
”I knew it…”
Master Sharlin said, like she was expecting this.
”You mean ‘I knew it,’ Master. This… human…”
”Human? Karin, what are you saying? This guy is… spirit clan.”
”Eh?”
