Puruun’s POV
One week after His Majesty the Emperor made Major Artemis his subordinate, the Major visited Ms. Norca’s house. He reported the information he had gathered to Your Majesty. Just then, Ms. Catherine finally came home.
”Oh, Catherine, thank you for your hard work. Did you find anything about my uncle?”
”Yes, Your Majesty. We have confirmed Duke Suicelma’s location. He is still alive… but wait, who is this person!?”
Ms. Catherine froze, looking at Major Artemis with a defensive stance.
”No, no, Catherine. Don’t you remember? This is Artemis, captain of my Imperial Guard. Ms. Puruun’s quick thinking brought him to our side when he was in this town.”
”Artemis… ah, I remember now. Is he the Major of the Imperial Guard who always fights with his wife because he is a womanizer? That wife is from the same hometown and species as me.”
Ah. So Major Artemis’s wife is also a succubus? Even with a wife who seems to accept that, he still flirts with other women. If even Ms. Catherine calls him a womanizer, he really is hopeless.
”Catherine, enough about Artemis. Tell us the details.”
His Majesty nodded, and Ms. Catherine began her report on her infiltration.
For about half a month, Ms. Catherine used a simple gate to sneak deep into the spirit clan’s camp. She found that Duke Suicelma and several soldiers—likely his subordinates—were held near a rock prison behind the camp. The camp was near a river on the western border. She could not get close enough to talk to them, but she watched from a safe distance. She saw they were alive, so it is safe to say the Duke is alive.
”Good work, Catherine. You went far. Thank you. But why is the spirit clan keeping the uncle and others alive? They should not have prisoners to exchange, right?”
The Major agreed, “Yes.”
”Maybe they want a ceasefire or some good deal. Or maybe they are not as cruel as we thought.”
”I see? But the spirit clan cannot speak out loud. They talk with telepathy, and only a few priests can use it. If we let them use telepathy carelessly, they might take over the body.”
”Yes. I cannot understand their talks. I carefully move through simple gates, using mana to avoid detection, and I watch with my own eyes.”
The emperor and Ms. Catherine spoke, but these things were new to me.
”Take over the body… what does that mean?”
”Ah, Ms. Puruun, it means what it sounds like. Their telepathy is not like demons or elves. It is more like directly linking minds.”
”Huh? So, they can see everything we think?”
”Yes. If you link to their minds, you cannot hide anything. If you are careless, they may take control of your thoughts, and you cannot move. So, priests trained in telepathy must guard themselves well. It is hard to talk or negotiate without this skill.”
”Sounds hard. So even Major Artemis cannot hide naughty thoughts from the spirit clan?”
”Head Secretary, please don’t use me as a bad example!”
”Ha ha, well, that is how it is. Ms. Puruun.”
”So, Your Majesty, what should we do next? Should we plan to rescue the Duke? If you order me, I will go right away. The simple gate can carry only one Duke…”
”Hmm, Catherine, other soldiers were captured too, right? Maybe Ms. Norca’s husband is among them.”
The Emperor looked at Ms. Norca, who watched us with worry from a short distance.
”But, Your Majesty, right now restoring the territory’s system is most important.”
Ms. Catherine spoke firmly.
”That is true, but… since the spirit clan keeps my uncle alive, there must be a reason. Maybe it links to our plans. Artemis, aren’t you closest to the needed information?”
”Yes. But even I don’t fully understand what those above are doing. Ah, wait. There is something strange.”
”What is it?”
”The military base by the river. There is a building like a base near the front line, but no soldiers are stationed there—only guards. They say local soldiers from Suicelma’s territory guard it. But how many soldiers are left unharmed if the lord was captured alive in the last battle?”
”I see… a living lord. A strange military base. Guards who do not leave. The spirit clan that does not move…”
”Ms. Puruun, do you know what that means?”
”No, Emperor, I do not know. But I feel something important is hidden from us. It is just a feeling. But for Your Majesty’s restoration, as Ms. Catherine said, rescuing the lord is the top goal. So, I will think of a plan to rescue Duke Suicelma and the other soldiers. Major, could you find more about that strange base?”
Ms. Catherine and the Major agreed with my idea.
”So, Ms. Puruun, what should I do?”
”Ah, Your Majesty, please stay calm here. This is the safest place now. But when the rescue begins, we may ask for your magic. Please be ready.”
