Volume 1 Chapter 3-2 The Goal Is To Escape Abroad

Edited by: Kanaa-senpai

First, I only managed to guess the likely time period.

It was hard to tell because of the darkness, but from the face of the girl I saw during the Escape (Emergency Egress), I could guess her age a little.

She had a well-shaped face. Her height was average, and she looked clearly young.

She was probably in her mid to late teens. I was turning 30 this year, but I had no memory of dumping a girl who could be called a kid.

She was such a beautiful flower. If I had been with her, I would not have forgotten.

If it was a story from a long time ago that I forgot, it had to be at least ten years ago. But then, how old would she have been back then? What kind of kid did I sleep with?

In that case, I had to think about what she meant by reincarnation.

This was only a guess. If she died and was immediately born again, her last life would be about ten to fifteen years ago. It could not be farther back than that. If it was around that time, I would remember having a bad reputation with women.

Well, I had lived carelessly since I was young.

Honestly, I thought I had been with many women.

If people said I had dumped them, there were probably some I could not deny.

But when she said she died… honestly, I did not understand this.

It was true that I might not have had a good reputation with women. But I had no memory of anything that would lead to her death.

…Please don’t say I jumped off somewhere strange.

Now, the sun tilted, and the sky started to turn red.

I left the beast path, looked around, and entered the mountain road.

I went straight ahead and came to a small village that looked like it was a hundred years behind the royal capital.

It had been a long time since I came here.

As usual, there was nothing here.

Old wooden houses lined the street, with broken ruins here and there.

The village gate was so broken that it was hard to tell how long it had been like that.

This village, hidden deep in the mountains, seemed to grow very slowly because it had almost no trade.

It was a place that could easily become a ghost village at any moment.

No, it was likely already one.

I looked for people to find food…

Ah, no good. It was still not a time to rest.

As soon as I arrived in the village, strong sleepiness hit me.

Maybe I felt safe because I was in a place with people. Even though I had not escaped my pursuers, it was too soon to feel relaxed.

But it seemed my body was too tired from traveling day and night. It was asking for rest.

This was bad. I could not hold on.

Getting food was important, but I had to rest for now.

I could not think of anything else. If I closed my eyes, I would fall asleep.

Now, I saw a broken house and went inside without asking.

Part of the wall was missing, and there was no sign anyone lived there.

The walls were wood, and the roof had many holes and was rotten. It had not been used for many years. It was a completely abandoned ruin.

I lay down on the floor, almost level with the ground.

Let’s rest. I wanted to rest. I was so sleepy that nothing else mattered.

Deciding to think later, I quickly lost consciousness.

 —

I suddenly woke up and sat up.

I planned to sleep a little, but I fell into a deep sleep.

It was pitch dark, no need to look around.

I did not know how long it had been since the sun went down.

 I was very hungry.

If I did not eat soon, I thought I might die.

I planned to make a story about being chased by a monster and dropping my things to get food from the villagers. But a visitor at this hour would look very suspicious. First, I probably could not open the door. Also, with the silence around, the villagers were likely already asleep.

I had slept too long by accident.

Because of that, I realized the situation was very hard.

If I wanted to handle things calmly and safely, I should wait until sunrise. But my hunger made me restless, and I felt the need to move now.

In this hard situation, my anger grew. I could not think clearly.

Suddenly, I felt a faint breath next to me.

 ”…Huh? Who is it?”

I wondered how long the person had been there.

When I turned, I saw a shadow sitting with legs crossed in the corner.

A broken shack with many holes.

The moonlight shining through the gaps lit up the long hair of the shadow.

Was it a woman? She looked very small.

I could not see her face, but she stared at me.

”…Ah, was this your house? Sorry, I just borrowed it for a while.”

 Her hair moved.

She shook her head from side to side.

Was that good, bad, or different?

I could not understand just from the head shaking.

”Who are you? What is your name?”

 ”……”

The shadow, looking like a woman, shook her head again.

She was asked her name but shook her head. Did that mean she did not want to say? Why not say it with words?

It seemed strange, but from experience, I thought of a possibility.

 ”Can’t you speak?”

 The shadow nodded slightly.

For some reason, she could not speak at all.

Mental reasons. Physical injury. A born curse. Magic.

There were many reasons, but I was not interested, so I let it go.

 The shadow tilted her head.

That small movement made her look very young.

Living in a low shack, she might be a vagrant.

I briefly thought she had a hard life from a young age, but then I saw a mark on her shoulder in the moonlight.

”…Are you a slave? Is it okay for slaves to be in a place like this? Or is this your home?”

 She nodded again.

 So, she lived here.

Slaves were treated very differently by people, but she looked oppressed. This was no place for people to live. Without a good bed, a person breaks down fast. As a way to use human power, this was not good.

Besides that, I got some good information.

 ”Who is your master?”

When I asked, the slave pointed to the front of the shack.

There was a simple two-story wooden house.

It did not look rich enough to own a slave.

Even compared to the broken houses around, it was not very different.

But since they had one, maybe her master had some small power. Maybe the master just did not care about the house.

Anyway, I was running away and needed many things.

I would try to get some room to move.

I cracked my neck with a pop and started to stand up to work.

Then, something was quietly handed to me from the side. It looked like a wooden bowl. It had water inside.

It was almost too poor a gift.

Well, if she gave it, I would take it.

Somehow, it seemed she was being kind.

I took the bowl and drank all the water.

 It tasted like chewing wood.

Yes, it was just the smell of the wooden bowl. The water had no taste.

Maybe it was birch or cedar. I did not know that place, but it was not a good cup for drinking.

I stood and checked how I felt.

I was not dizzy or anything. I forced myself to move, but my body was fine. I felt hungry and tired, but I could still manage.

 No other problems.

My strength was weak, but I could still handle emergency situations.

My weapon was ready too. One longtime partner I trusted, and a special skill.

As usual. Now it was about luck and good decisions.

 ──All right, let’s go.
