Volume 6 Chapter 28-2 Strike While The Iron Is Hot

Edited by: Kanaa-senpai

The old man is, if I remember right, one of the top knights under the Baron’s house. He’s a level 18 warrior, which is pretty strong for someone in this world.

He’s clearly above Mr. Laken. Ms. Ant could probably take him down easily, but I shouldn’t let my guard down.

What’s surprising is that, aside from this old man, the Baron’s house doesn’t have anyone who can fight. There’s one more knight who’s served the family for generations, but he’s just a young guy who calls himself a tactician. He’s level 4. I could beat him with no problem.

Even the civil officials aren’t strong. None of them are above level 5. I wonder why such weak people act so aggressive all the time.

”If we leave them alone, it’ll be a shame on our house. Let’s strike first and crush them before they get cocky. If we hire twenty mercenaries, we can kill every single one who stands in our way. Please give your approval.”

He shoves a long scroll full of words in front of the Baron. It’s probably a letter to ask the king for permission to start a war. His words are polite, but his actions are not what a servant should do.

”Don’t say such scary things. You have no right to speak against nobles who were approved by His Majesty. Know your place.”

Wow. The Baron actually said something smart. Doesn’t sound like a fool, at least.

 ”Your approval, please.”

They force a huge ring onto the Baron’s finger and press it against the scroll, using both hands.

”You stubborn pig. Hey, make him release mana.”

One of the officials pricks the Baron’s arm with a sharp tool. His face twists in pain. The ring glows red. Mana confirmed.

”We have your approval. From now on, we fight for Your Excellency with our lives.”

The old man bows on purpose. The Baron glares at him, but he stays calm.

 ”You traitor.”

”We are loyal. Without us, a useless pig like you would’ve died on the roadside long ago. Be thankful.”

The servants laugh and leave the room, starting their war meeting without the Baron. But all they plan is to send mercenaries to take over my village. That’s it. I expected something better.

But there are no buildings yet. No people either. What are they even planning to take? The mercenaries are going to be so confused. Well, they won’t make it that far anyway.

I use Radar Scan to track the messenger with the scroll. They’re headed to the government office near the palace. It’s close enough that I can see everything from here.

Ms. Floria is still chatting with some staff inside. I can’t hear what they’re saying, though.

The messenger skips the line using the Baron’s title. There’s a special window for nobles, but no one’s working there right now. Don’t tell me that worker is chatting with Ms. Floria?

Since it’s about war, I doubt they’ll approve it quickly. It probably needs the king’s personal stamp.

I thought the king would call a meeting first, but no—someone just stamps the paper like it’s nothing. Seriously?

At the same time, Ms. Floria flips over a small plate on her desk. No mistake. That’s the sign to start the plan.

I turn off Stealth, walk up to the Baron’s study, and knock on the door.

”Your Majesty has approved the request. Baron Toyata’s house has officially declared war on mine. Is that correct?”

”It wasn’t me! My servants acted on their own! But since they used my name, I must take responsibility. I surrender. I, Baron Toyata, surrender to Viscount… you.”

That’s it. He gave up. Since the leader surrendered, I win.

His servants run out from the next room, but it’s too late. The surrender is official. If they fight now, they’ll be seen as rebels.

The old knight still draws his sword. Maybe he doesn’t know the law. Not many do in rare cases like this.

”The Baron has already surrendered. If you fight now, you’re just a criminal.”

”Shut your mouth! Catch him alive with poison needles! Don’t let him leave!”

The old man yells, and the others follow. So they want to silence me. Killing me is risky because of my skill, so they want to paralyze me. I see—they know the law. If no one finds out, they think it’s fine.

But I planned for this. Ms. Yakou is already waiting outside. In fact, I bet she’s dying to jump in.

 ”That’s enough. Go ahead.”

At my signal, the servants drop to the floor. They’ve been hit with paralyzing needles.

As the old man panics, Yakou steps in, dressed in black.

”One, I love meat. Two, I hate bad guys. Three—”

 ”What are you saying?!”

The old man charges, but Yakou knocks him out with one clean chop.

”Ah! I didn’t finish my lines! I practiced so hard!”

She’s totally relaxed. But that wasn’t a counting song. Maybe she misunderstood. Could be the limit of her Mind Communication Skill. I’ll need to teach her proper Japanese culture later.

* * *

”Have I really been ruled by people like them all this time?”

The Baron holds his head. His weak-looking female servant just crushed the strongest people around him. Must be a shock.

He probably thinks it was easy, but we worked hard for this moment. Most of the credit goes to Ms. Floria.

”This is your victory, Baron. Let’s use this to clean out all the rot.”

”Is there a way for the Viscount to take over my lands? I don’t mind losing my servants, but I can’t run a whole territory. Just leave me the mansion, the kitchen, and the cooks. I need nothing else.”

No wonder the servants had it easy. He just wants food and a roof. But does he even know how expensive that is?

”Managing land isn’t easy. But if you follow what your servants did last year, you’ll be fine. I already grabbed the tax records before they were hidden. If you need help, I can lend you people.”

Taxes don’t change much. It’s mostly double-checking papers. If I send strong guards with Shea-Shea, she can go village to village and finish it in days.

”I see. Since you prepared so much, I’ll try managing it myself. If I fail, will you help me again?”

”Sure. But if you keep wasting money, you’ll go broke fast.”

 His face turns pale.

Looks like I’ll need to teach him basic economics from scratch.
