Volume 6 Chapter 29-3 Concrete Road
Edited by: Kanaa-senpai
When I stepped into the teleportation gate, I found myself in a long hallway. Many other gates lined the walls. Each one had a symbol on it, and I could check the destinations in a big ledger.
I already knew which gate number would take me to the Eye of the Cyclops. Now I just needed to find the best way to get there.
If I were a programmer, maybe I could make a tool to search for the shortest route using my editor skill. But I couldn’t think of a smart way to do it.
The ledger showed the paths from each gate to the underground of the dwarf kingdom. So if it became too hard to figure out, I could always go to the dwarf kingdom first.
When I compared the path from the old Toyata village and the path from the fire mountain, I saw that the second half was the same. I decided to go to the point where both paths met. There was probably a smarter way, but for now, I just needed to reach the fire mountain.
On the way, I saw several dwarf soldiers. They were armed and seemed to be patrolling. When I greeted them, they gave me sly smiles. It felt like they already knew who I was.
* * *
The teleportation gate at the fire mountain was deep inside an old dungeon. Monsters did not appear, but the path was a maze.
Thanks to my Radar Scan, I didn’t get lost. I also found dwarf footprints that led the way. It seemed like they also came here to collect volcanic ash, just like me.
Many traps were still active. I saw pitfall traps, but since the holes were open, they were easy to avoid. When I turned on a light, the ground in front of me became an illusion. It was a trick to fool human eyes. For dwarves with night vision, it was no problem.
It wasn’t as fun as a dungeon in a game, but the trap was good at keeping out humans. Without my night vision skill, I might have been in trouble.
When I finally came outside, I felt so happy to breathe the fresh air again.
This place was farther south than the Holy Kingdom. The air was hot and wet.
I saw many trees like a jungle, but when I looked closer, the ground was covered in wall barley.
Even in a place like this, wall barley had spread. There were probably no people here to cut it down. Maybe wild animals ate it, but that might cause problems. I wondered if it was safe for the local ecosystem.
The mining area for volcanic ash was easy to find. The nearby mountains had large open scars. People from many lands had come here, so the mountains were almost bald. This was also a kind of environmental damage.
This area was outside any kingdom’s border. There were no official rules, but toll roads had been built. Each time a cart passed through, it had to pay a toll. I guess it was to pay for road repair. That made sense.
I followed a small animal path toward the closest mining site. At first, it was easy. There were dwarf footprints again. But after I passed a fork, the path became wild and hard to walk.
The other path seemed to lead to the toll road. It was longer, but maybe safer. Maybe this was one of those “haste makes waste” moments.
After a long and hard trip, I reached a small village. It was abandoned. The mining site was right in front of me, but a deep valley blocked my path.
I had checked the area using Radar Scan, but I still fell into this trap.
Well, maybe I was just careless. Still, I could stretch my invisible hand and reach the mining site. It would be fine.
It looked like no one was there. I decided to try moving volcanic ash using teleportation.
First, I summoned Pii-Pii. It would be my mana tank. My own MP was not enough to use big skills.
I cut the ash from the mining site into a cube, small enough to fit in my magic bag. Then I teleported it into the air, then into the bag.
Good. It worked!
Since I was here, I thought about gathering more. As long as Pii-Pii had mana, I could keep going. But I knew it would never end if I got greedy.
I decided to stop for now. I could always come back later.
If I sold this much volcanic ash in the royal capital, I could get rich. But if I sold too much, the price might crash. I didn’t want the Merchant Guild to get angry. So I gave up on that.
—
I left the jungle the same way I came. I went through the old dungeon and finally reached the teleportation gate again.
I was very tired, but since I had come this far, I wanted to finish collecting materials for concrete.
Next, I would go to the teleportation gate of the white valley.
—
The teleportation gate was inside a big temple. Dust covered the old statues of forgotten gods.
I had come here quickly, but it looked like the mining site was still far away. The area around the temple was a grass field full of wall barley, but at least it was better than the jungle.
The white valley looked like a big crack in the earth. It would be hard to go down. At the bottom, I saw a river and many small boats.
This place was also not part of any kingdom. But a pirate group seemed to control the sand. They owned the mining rights.
The mining site was on the side of a cliff. The tunnels looked like an ant nest. Honestly, it felt very unsafe. Some parts had already collapsed.
I used teleportation to take sand from the open parts and put it into my magic bag.
This combo of skills was very powerful. With it, I could strip all the resources from a mountain.
I got too excited. Pii-Pii’s mana was almost gone. I decided it was time to go back.
Tonight, I would rest and use meditation to refill Pii-Pii’s mana. I had reached my own limit too. Maybe I worked too hard today.
