When I asked Miss Floria about the letter for Ms. Nina… she said heavy stuff is no good. I remembered when I had the flu, my brother left manga by my bed. But my head hurt so much, I gave up after one page. I have many things I want to say, but if the letter makes Ms. Nina feel bad, it is the wrong way.
”If you want to win a girl’s heart, send short letters often,” Miss Floria said. “But don’t send too many. It is better to send letters a little slowly, so she will wait and want more. Sending too much makes her bored.”
It is my first time to send a letter to a girl, so I do not really know. But since Miss Floria said it, it must be right. So the letter can be a short greeting. I think even nobles in the Heian time sent waka poems as love letters. They did not say love directly, but they sent feelings quietly. It is like showing smartness and culture. You can see how love was played in The Tale of Genji. My language teacher said, as a man, he likes The Tales of Ise better because he feels more connected. It is full of passion but does not have rough words. The reader must imagine the rest.
By the way, the main man in The Tales of Ise, Ariwara no Narihira, was a real playboy. He is famous for the poem “Chihayafuru.”
I have no skill to write waka poems, but I can copy them as ideas. I take famous poems and change them a little to write in this world’s words.
”Spring comes, but you cannot see it. I feel it only in the sound of the wind.”
”That is good. But outside now, spring flowers bloom everywhere. It is not a lie, right?”
The original poem was about autumn, so it is no good here. But there are many poems about spring flowers, so I will use another.
”If there were no flowers in this world, spring would be calmer.”
”That is interesting. Did you think of it yourself? It sounds smart, like word play. That girl will like it.”
This is also from Ariwara no Narihira. He must have been really clever. Smart girls like that. I wish I studied my language class more seriously. Well, I was good at Hyakunin Isshu cards, so I can manage for now.
But wait, my letter does not feel like a love letter. But if Ms. Nina likes it, then it is okay.

Miss Floria suddenly got shy and started moving strangely. Age feels different in Japan and this country. I think it is strange to call a woman older after 20. • Shea-Shea – Mauro’s daughter. Hurt by Alexander. Became an eager fiancée after advice from protagonist.
• Ms. Mahal – A talented alchemist and old friend of Mr. Zenom’s; she is knowledgeable about homunculi and leads the protagonist to a secret underground passage.
