Chapter 157 Training Doctor In Remote Areas I

Edited by: Kanaa-senpai

”Huh… now that I think about it, maybe it really was my fault.”

Up until a moment ago, Haruto had blamed the hospital director. But after reflecting on everything, he started to understand. Maybe they had a reason for pushing him out—maybe he was hiding something without even realizing it.

”Well, I’m not planning on working at a university hospital anyway,” he muttered. “Guess I’ll just deal with it.”

Haruto accepted the situation without much resistance. If it was his own mistake, then it couldn’t be helped. It wasn’t that he hated working in a rural area—it just tended to be… quiet. Too quiet.

”It’s not an island, but this place kinda gives off Dr.〇to vibes.”

As he walked past the side of the building, he noticed a few trees without any leaves. Their bare branches looked almost eerie.

”What kind of tree is this…? No leaves—does that mean it’s dead?”

He reached out and touched the trunk.

”Dead…? Wait, are plants even considered alive?”

That random thought hit him harder than expected. Curious, Haruto placed his hand gently on the bark.

”…Whoa. Yeah, I can feel it. It has cells… and DNA.”

*DNA (Deoxyribonucleic Acid): The molecule that holds genetic information in all living things.

”So that means… I could probably treat it, right?”

The tree, thought to be dead at first glance, wasn’t actually lifeless. Haruto applied his ability—not that anything changed on the outside—but he could sense the shift from within. Something was different.

”Still… humans and plants are definitely built differently.”

He continued observing the tree through his unique perception. Its structure wasn’t the same as a human body, yet some parts had unexpected similarities.

”Hmm… some functions are weirdly close to human ones.”

Plants had far fewer cells than people. That made them more sensitive—more reactive to minor changes that humans wouldn’t even register. But there was something else too… something he couldn’t quite identify.

 ”Um… excuse me.”

A voice suddenly pulled him back to reality.

 ”Huh? Oh—sorry! What is it?”

Standing before him was a girl, probably still in high school.

”I need some medicine… for my grandma.”

 ”I see. Is she here?”

 ”No… she’s at home.”

Haruto glanced around the clinic. No one else was in sight. He’d assumed the grandmother was waiting inside, but the girl’s answer surprised him.

”Hmm… I’m sorry, but I can’t give out medicine without seeing the patient first.”

”What? But… you’ve been doing that, haven’t you?”

”Do you mean a refill prescription?”

*Refill prescription: A type of prescription that allows patients with stable conditions to receive the same medication multiple times, based on the doctor’s decision.

 ”Refill…? What’s that?”

”Anyway, what kind of medicine does she need?”

”It’s for lowering her blood pressure. Is that not okay?”

”In that case, I’ll come with you to her house. I’ve got time.”

Haruto stepped back into the clinic, scribbled a note about his temporary absence, and left his mobile number at the entrance.

 ”Alright, let’s go. Something wrong?”

”Um… are you really not just going to give me the medicine?”

She looked hesitant. It wasn’t hard to understand—inviting a stranger, especially a doctor she didn’t know, into her home must’ve felt uncomfortable. Haruto realized she was suspicious of him.

But in his mind, rural towns were supposed to be more relaxed. More open. A little warmer.

As they walked, he looked up the Medical Practitioners’ Law on his smartphone.

’Physicians are prohibited from diagnosing or treating without examining the patient in person, and may not issue prescriptions or medical certificates otherwise.’

 Now he understood.

”…Just what was the previous doctor doing here?”

That thought lingered as he quietly followed behind the girl, his footsteps soft against the quiet country road.
