”Good morning, Doctor,” said an elderly voice.
”Good morning! Did you all walk here today?”
”Yes. My grandmother wanted to get some fresh air.”
”That’s good to hear. Walking is important.”
”Being able to walk again means a lot to us,” the grandmother said, clasping her hands softly, almost as if she was praying quietly to Haruto.
Haruto felt a little confused. To avoid getting caught up in questions, he quickly changed the subject.
”By the way, Grandma, do you remember what kind of tree this is?”
”Hmm? Oh, that’s probably an Osmanthus, right?”
Osmanthus flowers usually bloom from mid-September to late October. So, it should bloom soon—but this tree had no leaves at all. Haruto thought it might not bloom this year, even with treatment.
”An Osmanthus, huh? Looks like it won’t bloom this year.”
”That Osmanthus bloomed two years ago,” the grandmother said softly.
”Really? Why did it stop blooming?”
”Because the person who lived here before often peed near it.”
”Oh… I see.” Haruto guessed that maybe the previous resident was trying to show Yoshimi-chan something, but he didn’t want to ask more.
He also thought maybe they used urine like fertilizer. When Haruto was a kid in his past life, he remembered thinking urine helped plants grow. Maybe he heard it somewhere. Actually, urine can work like fertilizer sometimes—but too much is bad. Like they say, it can be both medicine and poison.
”Shall I give you a massage inside now?”
”Yes, please!”
Inside the clinic, as Haruto prepared to massage his grandmother, Yoshimi-chan suddenly spoke up.
”Oh! After the massage, the bandages cover everything. She won’t be able to see.”
”Oh, I forgot about that.”
”Today’s the last massage. If we keep the bandages on for about an hour, she can walk home safely.”
”That’s a relief.”
Haruto finished getting ready and started massaging his grandmother. This kind of treatment shouldn’t normally happen, but she only had slight glaucoma and cataracts left. If the treatment had been complete, even her presbyopia and eyesight would be perfect. Even though she was old, her vision was 2.0—so she stopped the treatment herself.
”Please rest here for an hour.”
”Thank you very much,” she said, closing her eyes under the bandages.
She began praying again quietly. Haruto and Yoshimi-chan waited patiently.
Then Haruto started massaging Yoshimi-chan.
”Yoshimi-chan, do you have any other health problems?”
”Health problems? Hmm… nothing special.”
Haruto wondered if it might be something more personal, but he decided not to go there. Instead, he thought it was time to be direct.
”Yoshimi-chan, do you know about autologous blood transfusion?”
Notes:
• Yoshimi – Female. A high school girl who guides Haruto to her grandmother’s house. She is wary of doctors due to past experiences and becomes agitated when Haruto reveals her grandmother’s condition. Her relationship with Haruto is tense, and she sides with her family in distrusting him.
