Volume 3 Chapter 182 Linca, Losing Patience
Edited by: Kanaa-senpai
The next morning, he gently laid Sarah—still unconscious—on the bed, then finished getting himself ready.
As he stepped out, the eyes of the maids turned toward the castle behind them. He moved forward and joined Rufna and Natra, who were already waiting near the edge of the courtyard.
”What about the barrier?” he asked without delay.
”It’s already set,” Rufna said with a short nod. “Thanks to Linca—she even covered Milady Sarah’s part. We had more time than expected.”
”Linca, huh. I should praise her. Where is she now?” he asked.
”In her room,” Rufna answered. “She’s bathing, eating, and fixing her face. She’s joining us today for the Eight Array Stones, right?”
”That’s the plan,” Kian replied with a nod, though he paused for a moment.
A few seconds passed before he turned toward the two women again.
”I got Lady Christy’s staff from Her Excellency,” Rufna said slowly. “I’m thinking of giving it to Linca.”
”With how fast meteor spells cast, wouldn’t it be better to give Elder Sister a magic boost?” Natra asked calmly.
But Kian shook his head at her words.
”I don’t trust her,” he said. “I won’t give her the staff.”
”What are you trying to say?” Rufna asked, her tone sharp.
”…It’s true I don’t trust her,” Natra admitted. “But I don’t understand why she changed all of a sudden.”
”Actually, last night, I had a deep talk with Sarah,” Kian said. “She told me she wants to live for her own happiness now.”
”Did you make a magic contract with her?” Natra asked.
”No. I didn’t. I want her to stay free. I don’t want to trap her by force,” he answered.
”Then… what kind of talk did you have?” Natra asked again.
In response, Kian explained their conversation. Rufna and Natra stood quietly, listening closely without saying a word. Though he meant to keep it short, the words kept coming, and before long, he had shared nearly everything that happened.
”…I see,” Rufna said at last, her voice soft.
”I get it now. The big lady hasn’t really changed. And it looks like even you, Master, finally stopped chasing her pretty looks.”
”We were never sure we could trust Elder Sister,” Natra said. “If you give her a strong weapon and your value drops, she might run away. If she leaves with Lady Christina’s staff, it’ll be a real problem. Giving it to Lady Linca is safer.”
”Master,” Rufna asked, narrowing her eyes, “are you planning to give up on Milady Sarah?”
”I won’t leave her behind,” Kian said at once.
After a short pause, he added, “But we might end up enemies. If Umar moves toward Izerland’s capital, and if Oswald helps him, then Sarah might choose their side.”
”Elder Sister’s not the type to betray just to save herself,” Natra said.
”No… But if she sees Umar in danger, she might pick him.”
Rufna turned toward the castle, her stare turning cold.
”If Umar plans to save Nakash, she might follow him for that reason. That’s how she thinks. Worst case, we may have to fight both her and Oswald.”
”Milady Sarah doesn’t like to kill if she can help it,” Rufna said, her eyes steady. “But… if you’re in danger, I’ll do it. If anyone has to, I want it to be me.”
”Until Sir Kian brings down Elder Sister, we’ll hold off Oswald,” Natra added.
”That’s how it’ll go,” Kian said. “…Sorry.”
”There’s no need to say that,” Rufna said, smiling with a shrug. “Milady Sarah once saved you. It’s only natural you want to save her too.”
”Before we face Umar, I’ll quietly remove their weapons. But Kian, can you really beat Elder Sister?” Natra asked.
”I can,” he said. “I’ve already figured her out. With my magic sword and armor, I can bring her down in two or three seconds.”
If he only wanted to kill, he could just use Talia’s magic sword—Shadow Pierce (Kagezuki)—and strike before she could react.
Shadow Pierce was a stronger form of Pursuit of the Shadow, able to fire with no cost to his body. There was a small delay when drawing it, but Sarah was far slower than Arminus, Isthbaran, or Juji. At best, she could fire off a basic Shot-type spell.
But even that didn’t matter. His Silver Ice armor could block even Juji’s mid-range magic spears without a mark. Sarah’s attacks wouldn’t ever land a killing blow. In the end, she would drop before Shadow Pierce reached full strength.
”When the command spell hits her, she’ll probably faint before doing anything,” Kian said.
”If she wakes up again, it’s easier to just cut off her head…” Rufna muttered.
”I’ve told you many times—I don’t want to kill her,” Kian said clearly. “Even if she betrays me, I still want her to be happy. Please… let me have this one last wish.”
”…Got it,” Rufna said with a grin. “You really are a handful, Master.”
”Is that the end of the talk?” Natra asked.
”Yes,” Kian replied with a nod.
”Then I’ll get started on the fortress base on the hill,” Rufna said, rolling her shoulders. “It’s the fourth day since the truce started, right? The wheat’s still green. Looks like the talks haven’t broken down yet.”
”I hope not. Natra, you were going to help move the magic catalysts and spare gear using teleport gates, right?” he asked.
”Yes,” Natra said with a nod.
Kian turned to her and gently placed his hand on her shoulder.
”Sorry, but once that’s done, go on patrol,” he said. “While I’m gone, you and Rufna will guard the town. If anything happens… I’m counting on you.”
”Leave it to us. We’ve got it,” Natra said with a smile.
Rufna gave a small wave and vanished into a teleport gate she opened in the square.
But Natra didn’t move. She stayed where she was, eyes fixed on Kian.
”Natra?” he asked.
”Sir Kian… bend down a little, please.”
”Like this?” he asked, leaning in.
”Yes. That’s enough,” she said.
She slowly wrapped her arms around his head, holding him close. The scent of soap and warm water clung to her.
”Sir Kian still has me,” she whispered.
”Natra…” he murmured.
”I’m sorry,” she said, her voice soft. “But just now, you looked really lonely. I can tell you don’t want to lose Elder Sister.”
”…Sorry,” he muttered again.
”No,” she said, shaking her head gently. “There’s no need. You’re still chasing the shadow of the Elder Sister you once knew.”
”────!”
”You’re trying so hard to help her… because she helped you back then, right?”
Kian closed his eyes, his face resting against Natra’s chest, his brow drawn in pain.
”That’s part of it,” he said. “But if I let her go now… I feel like she’ll break apart.”
He could already see it—Sarah, standing beside Umar or trying to bring back Nakash, burning through her body until nothing was left. In the end, she’d be alone, forgotten, dying like a stray dog.
Ever since they met again, that danger never left her.
He couldn’t walk away.
”For Sarah… maybe it’s her own fault,” he said. “But she’s walking the same path I almost died on fifteen years ago. I can’t just stand and watch.”
”…I see,” Natra whispered. “So that’s how you really feel.”
She let go of his head, cupped his ear, and leaned in to press a soft kiss on his lips.
”Hey, wait…” Kian called out, his voice low and breathy.
For some reason, his face turned red. He wiped his lips, where a faint trace of something sweet still lingered, then stood up with a slight stagger.
”It’s still morning… and this is the castle square,” he muttered, glancing around the quiet stone plaza.
”What about it?” Natra asked with a shrug, her voice light. “I don’t mind.”
”I do,” Kian said, lowering his gaze. “It matters to me.”
”Hehe. Even someone like you, Sir Kian, can still blush like that,” Natra said, her tone playful. “It’s kind of cute.”
”Stop teasing me,” he replied, rubbing the back of his head.
Natra chuckled softly and reached out, taking his hand in hers. Her thumb moved slowly over his skin, warm and gentle, sending a subtle warmth through his fingers that felt almost too real.
”Have you gotten back a bit of your strength?” she asked, still holding his hand.
”Well… yeah,” Kian replied, nodding faintly.
”Good,” Natra said with a small smile.
She held out a cloth bundle, the faint smell of fresh bread rising from inside.
”Breakfast. You probably haven’t eaten yet, right?” she said as she stepped back. “While you wait for Lady Linca, sit down and have some.”
”Sorry… and thanks,” Kian said, lowering his head slightly.
”No need,” Natra replied with a calm tone, then raised her staff carved with Wolfmen markings. With a light wave, she summoned the gate. A moment later, she vanished beyond it.
Kian stared at the spot she disappeared from, a breath catching in his throat.
’Good companions… once again.’
”Talia. Where have you been all this time?” he asked as a figure dropped from the sky.
A tall, slender woman with long blonde hair landed gracefully beside him, her red eyes sharp. Talia’s gaze fell on him with a quiet pressure.
”The Catacombs,” she said plainly. “It’s closer to the Spiritual Vein, so I don’t get tired as easily there.”
”Every time I’m about to have… a moment… with someone, you vanish,” Kian muttered.
”Wouldn’t it be stranger if I stayed and watched?” Talia asked, raising an eyebrow.
She studied his face for a second, then frowned.
”Something wrong?”
”No…” Kian answered, but his voice was uncertain.
”Hmm? Oh, I see. Did something happen with Lady Sarah?” Talia asked, tilting her head slightly.
”I don’t like being read like that,” he said.
”It’s not on purpose,” she replied. “It just flows in.”
Kian let out a deep breath, walking toward the low fence at the edge of the square. Leaning against it, he looked at the bundle Natra had given him, but didn’t open it yet.
”What do you think about Sarah? Do you think she’ll betray me?” he asked.
”I can’t say for sure that she won’t,” Talia answered.
”So you think she might?” he asked, eyes fixed on the scattered Adventurers crossing the square.
Talia nodded slowly.
”Fifteen years ago, Lady Sarah left you behind,” she said.
”…? Isn’t that exactly why she might try to help me now? Out of regret?”
Talia shook her head.
”Back then, she left you because you were weak. And now, feeling guilty, she might help someone else she sees the same way──Umar.”
”It’s bold to call Umar weak. Sure, he’s dying, but…”
”He is weak,” Talia said firmly. “His own son has taken everything from him. He’s spending his last funds trying to free Oswald and bribing the Beastmen. He’s lost the people closest to him. There’s not much left for him to move.”
”Oswald might join him,” Kian said.
”Ho ho ho ho,” Talia let out a soft, cold laugh.
”Oswald might see you, the one who protected Ramsey, as his only true ally. Not someone to fight… but someone to drink with,” she said.
”You really think so?”
”Even if he turns on us, if you and I fight together, no one will be able to beat us,” she said, her voice calm. “Natra, Rufna, and Linca are with us. The only person in this frontier who could match us would be someone like Renaud.”
”You think Linca will side with me?”
”Who knows?” Talia answered. “Don’t trust just one judgment. See with your own eyes.”
”Of course.”
Talia’s red eyes softened as she gave him a quiet smile.
”If you think you can trust them, tell them about me. About the blood magic armament. You’ll need their help.”
”I thought I already told them…”
”Doesn’t matter. I don’t trust anyone by default. In the end, you only have yourself to count on,” Talia said, turning to look across the square. “So… after seeing what Lady Sarah did, what do you think about Natra and Rufna?”
”That is…”
Talia leaned against the fence beside him, narrowing her eyes toward the far edge of the plaza.
”At least those two are always thinking of you first,” she said softly. “They try to understand you in their own ways, and they keep choosing to stand by your side. Kian, answer their kindness with trust. If not… you’ll end up alone, like Umar.”
”…Let me think about it.”
”Being able to say that… that’s a small step. But it matters,” Talia said with a small nod.
She pointed toward the center of the square.
”A teleport gate opened. It’s the princess. Lord Bertrand is with her.”
”I was just about to eat…” Kian sighed.
”Too bad. I only hope she’s gone before Linca gets here,” Talia said, her voice low.
Just as she said, the air in the center of the plaza twisted, and a glowing gate formed. From within, a Beastman Knight stepped out beside a woman in black robes—an old Witch.
The Witch spotted Kian at once, her eyes opening wide.
Kian quickly wrapped up the cloth bundle again and walked toward her.
”Good morning, Ms. Marilyn,” he said with a slight bow.
”Good morning, Master Kian,” Maribel replied in a polite voice.
”Good morning, Lord Kian,” Bertrand added. “What brings you here so early? You look a bit stiff.”
”I could ask you the same, Lord Bertrand,” Kian replied. “I’m heading out with my subordinate, the Head Magician, to set up Stone Soldier formations. After that, we’ll pass by the swamp to clear out a ghost called Pesta. We’ll also gather some mycorrhizal fungi for biological attack spells. That’s why I’m dressed like this.”
”The swamp…?” Maribel’s face tightened in worry.
”If you go that far, won’t you be late for the battle?” she asked.
”It’ll be fine. Linca’s Shikigami is fast. The round trip won’t take more than a day. I’ll be back by tomorrow afternoon, maybe evening,” Kian said.
”Then it’s okay,” Maribel said, nodding. “The truce was agreed on just three and a half days ago. Lady Eleonora is pushing hard with the talks. There shouldn’t be any problems for now.”
”You’ve heard from Lady Eleonora?” Kian asked.
Maribel gave a small nod, her old eyes sharp.
”Yes. Not just from her. I’ve received important reports from several places. I came to share them with you… Is now a good time, desuno?”
”Yes,” Kian replied.
Maribel raised her chin and began to speak clearly.
”First, from Lady Eleonora. The negotiation is going well. As planned, the union will be delayed long enough for the wheat to ripen—the golden stage. That gives us about a week of time.”
”Oh… as expected of Lady Eleonora,” Kian said with admiration.
Kian tilted his head in confusion, his feelings clashing with what he had expected. Maybe he needed to rethink his opinion of Eleonora.
”Second, late last night, a group believed to be Umar’s arrived at Izerland Fortress,” Maribel said firmly.
”───! I see,” Kian responded quickly.
”They haven’t appeared before the government officials yet, but once they reach the government office, Gao and the others will capture them. So, don’t worry,” Maribel assured him.
”…Wait, isn’t the princess going to question Umar about the monster soldiers and magic tech?” Kian asked.
”What nonsense are you saying? Umar Vahid sent assassins after you,” Maribel replied, raising her eyebrows sharply.
”Such dangerous people can’t be left free! We need to capture them immediately,” she added with a serious tone.
”But what about Umar’s knowledge?” Kian pressed.
”We’ll get it from his body. There are witches skilled in hypnosis—if we restrain him, we win. Anyway, listening to him depends on you bringing him in. Since he openly threatened our country’s Master Knight, Umar Vahid is now Princess Maribel’s enemy,” she said coldly.
Kian was stunned by Maribel’s words, laced with clear anger. She took his hand and continued.
”This Princess Maribel has been saved twice by you. First, by Oswald. Second, by that… thing. She will never forget the debt she owes you. That said, I’m definitely putting your military power to good use,” Maribel said with a faint smile.
”To be honest, I didn’t expect Princess Maribel to care so much about me,” Kian admitted quietly.
”Huh…? Think about what you’ve done before speaking. If you believe the princess sees you as unimportant, that’s an insult to her. Stop that right now, and never say it again,” she said sharply.
Though she usually smiled brightly around Kian, now her anger was clear. She took a deep breath to calm herself and softened her voice.
”Third, the two witches I mentioned earlier agreed to my request. Their names are Priscilla and Aisha.”
”I expected Priscilla, but not Aisha,” Kian said.
Aisha was a dark elf magician who served as Oswald’s lieutenant and magic user. When Kian first arrived at Izerland, she had helped open teleport gates, guided him around the fortress and training grounds, and much more.
”Aisha was under detention, wasn’t she?” Kian asked.
”We made a deal with her. Though I couldn’t free Oswald, I judged it safe to lift her restraints temporarily, with strict conditions,” Maribel explained.
”If Aisha betrays us, wouldn’t your life be in danger, Princess?” Kian questioned.
”That risk is clear. Still, I believe Aisha is necessary to fill gaps in our forces,” Maribel answered firmly.
Kian sighed. Aisha and Sarah would both need close watch. Allies were becoming more complicated by the day. Well, it was better than being like Owl—abandoned by everyone.
”As for Priscilla, she’ll stay at the rear, not fighting directly,” Maribel added.
”That makes sense. She’s Head Magician of Châtillon,” Kian noted.
”She’ll lend soldiers using her familiar and dragon teeth. Also, Lord Guy is coming from Châtillon.”
”Why is he coming?” Kian asked.
”He’s coming to observe. He’ll judge if my forces and you can push back the Beastmen. He won’t fight—or at least, not officially,” Maribel said.
With Priscilla’s dragon form and Guy’s presence, the Beastmen might be wiped out, but Maribel promised to gather war funds and protect Izerland. It was her and her knights’ fight to win.
”Also, frontier lords’ representatives will observe our battle. They’ll decide if we can really hold the line or if it’s just talk,” Maribel added.
”You can’t be serious!” Kian said in disbelief.
”I am. And if we lose this battle, the Danofen family will be finished. We need a clear victory,” she said firmly.
”That’s obvious. I’ll handle it,” Kian assured her.
”Not swearing absolute victory—that’s so typical of you, Master Kian,” Maribel teased with a crooked smile.
”That’s all from this Princess Maribel. Today, I’ll help with building the magic fortress on the hill. If you need me tomorrow, just say so,” she said.
”No, we shouldn’t let the Beastmen notice. We’ll only work on the foundation for now,” Kian replied.
”If you’re worried about the Beastmen noticing, why not bury the fortress underground?” Lord Bertrand suggested. “If we hide it underground and use a magic barrier to block detection, no one will know unless they physically enter. I used that once at a place called Dinan.”
”Good idea. Rufna handles fortress construction—please discuss this with her. If she agrees, I have no objections,” Kian said.
”Let’s return right away and propose it to Lady Rufna!” Maribel said.
”Lady Marilyn, please eat something here first. I won’t let you have field rations,” Kian said politely.
”Anything that fills my stomach is fine right now~desuwa. Let’s go,” Maribel said as she started preparing to open the gate.
Kian hesitated but offered her the breakfast from Natra.
”Lady Marilyn, if you like, please take this.”
”No, thank you. That’s Master Kian’s precious food,” Maribel said, signaling Bertrand to pass through.
”I don’t want to lose you. Please eat well and stay healthy forever,” Kian added softly.
”If you say so,” she answered.
No need to apologize to Natra later, he thought.
Suddenly, Kian remembered something important.
”Ah, I repaired several magic circuits on Ramsey’s castle wall. Including the reinforced walls, I’d like to request about 1,500 gold coins from the Franz Kingdom. Rufna will send the invoice later,” he said.
”1,500 coins~desuwa, understood. Since we took assets from Owl, we’ll pay from there—but only if we win this war safely,” Maribel replied.
Even if they lost, Kian planned to get paid. But if that happened, both he and Maribel would likely be dead—now was not the time for complaints. Only victory mattered.
”I’ll leave my best magician and strongest swordsman for defense. If things go wrong, they’ll handle it. Please rest easy,” Kian said.
”Lady Rufna and Lady Natra~desuwa, understood. They’re the brave ones who defeated Oswald. I trust them fully,” Maribel said.
Then, Maribel winked. “See you again,” she said before passing through the gate toward the camp.
Alone at last, Kian returned to the fence and slowly unwrapped the bundle.
The breakfast Natra prepared was bread, cheese, an apple, and a brown bottle with a drink inside. He opened the bottle and smelled it—it was a local fruit tea often drunk in Ramsey.
(Fruit tea, huh. This tea is way too sweet for me. It actually makes me thirstier.)
Natra probably picked it because she liked sweet things, but Kian couldn’t help making a small “ugh” face. Still, he didn’t want to waste her kindness, so he took a sip.
”This isn’t sweet,” he said quietly.
’Natra adjusted the taste for you, didn’t she?’ came a calm voice.
Kian nodded. “I guess she saw me drinking fruit tea last time we went out.”
’She must’ve noticed you didn’t like it too sweet and changed it for you.’
Kian’s eyes opened wide as he looked down at the bottle. It held plenty of cold liquid, and a light citrus smell—something Kian liked—floated in the air.
The tea Natra made just for him—
That small act warmed his heart, and a soft smile spread across his face.
”Is this what mom’s cooking tastes like?” he murmured.
’What are you saying? Hurry up and eat. Linca’s using magic to dry her hair. She’ll come out once she finishes her makeup.’
”Oh, right,” Kian said.
He ate quietly for a while.
The bread and cheese were from the castle storage, but with the tea, they tasted so much better. It reminded him of Christy’s cooking.
Christy cooked okay, but compared to Kian’s skill, her dishes were simpler. Honestly, if they had a cooking contest, Kian would win every time. Still—her food made him feel warm inside.
(Food matters. No matter how heavy your heart is, it fills your body. But it’s not just taste—there’s the feeling from the person who made it, and that feeds the heart too.)
Kian looked up at the blue sky.
”I wish I could eat Mr. Robert’s cooking…”
’By the time this war ends, it’ll be harvest festival over there. You should visit Esther too; it’s been a while.’
”It’s been over a month since I last saw her. If I get back safe, I’ll bring her a gift.”
’……’
”Talia?”
Suddenly, Kian turned toward ‘glasses,’ who was sitting silently with no expression. Talia blinked sharply, then answered quietly, “Nothing.”
By the time he finished eating, the main gate opened. Linca stepped out, her face bright and glowing from the bath.
”Sorry to keep you waiting, Sir Kian.”
”No, I just got here.”
”Oh, don’t lie. You have crumbs on your lips. Were you standing and eating?”
”Something like that.”
”Please sit and eat properly,” Linca said with a worried look.
She added, “Did you manage to make up with Ms. Sarah last night?”
”Make up? More like we reached a compromise.”
”A com—promise?” Linca’s eyes narrowed, like trouble was coming.
Kian nodded. “I haven’t made a magic contract. She said she loves me for her own reasons. I want to help her no matter what, so nothing really changed.”
”????????????????”
”And, I want to give this to you.”
Kian pulled Christy’s staff out of KnightWraith’s pocket with a slight movement.
”This should work better than the Silver Wolf Staff. Use it with the Wolfmen magician’s staff.”
”Um… With magic speed, maybe it’s better if Ms. Sarah uses it for bigger damage,” Linca said after a pause.
Kian decided to share his thoughts with her.
Linca was just a woman who loved one man, had family here, and seemed a little suspicious sometimes. But she had been helping Kian and reaching out to friends like Natra and Rufna. He trusted her more than Sarah.
He explained they would face Umar after this war, and Sarah might betray them depending on what Umar offers—either money or emotions. If Sarah did, Kian would control her. So they agreed not to give her too much power.
At first, Linca looked confused, but then her expression darkened as if the world was ending.
”Wait! Why are you saying this?”
”Because of my talk with Sarah yesterday. I’m telling you what she said herself. I don’t want to lie to Sarah—I told her straight, ‘I don’t trust you at all.’ She understood, but she still hesitates. That means she might betray us.”
”────────”
”Linca?”
”────────────────”
”That’s all. Lady Eleonora is buying us time, but we have little room left. Today, we will start making the Eight Trigrams Formation as planned.”
”Why? Why does it have to be like this?!” Linca shouted.
”Whoa! Hey, it’s still early. There are people beyond the square.”
”That doesn’t matter! It’s about Ms. Sarah! What did you do…? Tch… Haa! What kind of thoughts lead to this?”
”Ask Sarah. Honestly, last night she was impossible to understand. I tried, but I failed.”
”Sir Kian, you’re also strange! Ms. Sarah is a wild card, a dark-hearted gorilla with her own twisted way of love. You can’t think of her like a normal girl! What happened in the past doesn’t matter! Forget profits! Please respect her will and spirit!”
”She already told me enough about her feelings,” Kian said calmly.
Linca’s eyes widened.
”She hasn’t told me anything!? Sir Kian doesn’t understand at all!”
”????????”
”What kind of childish couple is this…?” Linca staggered, looking like she might faint, then grabbed Kian’s arm and pulled him toward the castle gate.
”Did you forget something?”
”It’s you. Come on, we need to get what you left behind!”
What had she left behind? Was it Sarah? But Sarah was still sleeping in the room—he wondered as Linca dragged her inside.
Behind them, Talia muttered quietly, “It’s good that Linca is here.”
