Volume 7 Chapter 4 Beastman Parent And Child With A Backstory

Edited by: Kanaa-senpai

”Gnome, I want you to guide us.”¹

T/N ¹: “Gnome” is a spirit of earth in Western-elemental systems.

As Vera whispered the request, a little figure made of compacted earth slithered silently up from the ground. Without so much as a glance back, it took off running.

”Just follow that kid,” Vera said, giving a nod.

We fell into step behind it. If that earth spirit—gnome—was tracing the beast girl’s footsteps, then it was probably reliable. It led us, as expected, through back alleys and downbeat neighborhoods meant to throw off pursuit—before suddenly guiding us into the city’s upscale district, where the wealthy kept their estates.

In a far corner, beside a crumbling mansion, the little figure sank back into the ground and disappeared just as it had come. Vera, visibly satisfied, pointed at the building.

 ”That’s the place,” she said.

”Thanks, Vera. Be sure to thank the gnome, too,” I replied, giving her a light pat on the head. She puffed up proudly.

I turned my gaze to the mansion once more. It sat on an ample plot, with the main house flanked by a couple of outbuildings—probably a stable and a storage shed. A typical rich person’s home. Judging by the location, the owner was likely a wealthy merchant, not nobility or any sort of titled bureaucrat.

”All right,” I said, straightening. “I’ll wait for nightfall and sneak in. You two head back to the inn first. It should be fine, but be careful.”

”Understood,” Vera said with a crisp bow.

 ”Okay,” chirped the other girl.

This was beyond their capabilities now. Infiltration and assassination weren’t something you could pull off without serious training.

Of course, I’d been raised by two monsters—Mama Vintenica and my master—so I’d had it beaten into me since childhood.

* * *

Once the sun dipped below the horizon, I moved.

First, I ran a magical scan for traps or barriers. Nothing. Security didn’t seem particularly tight. Two guards stood at the front gate, and two more at the back. No patrols. A textbook setup.

 —All right. Let’s do this.

I double-checked the surroundings, then vaulted over the fence. Once inside the grounds, I paused to confirm the layout again. The main building sat directly across from the front gate, behind a garden. To the east—my current position—stood what looked like a barracks and a stable.

And tucked into the northeast corner, a rundown shack. From the crooked seam of the door, I could see a faint light spilling out.

 That had to be it.

I approached more cautiously than usual, not letting a single sound escape. When I finally reached the outer wall, I could make out low voices coming from inside.

Peeking through a gap in the warped boards, I saw an interior that matched the exterior: shabby and neglected. The floor was bare dirt—no planks, no mats. Two old beds and a small table furnished the room.

Georgia was kneeling beside one of the beds, speaking to someone—her mother, judging by the soft voice that replied from the shadows.

”Mama, the master gave me medicine again today,” Georgia said. “I couldn’t even do the work he asked me to.”

”Well… Georgia, you mustn’t push yourself. Not for someone like me…”

”It’s okay. I’ll work harder, for both of us. So you just take your medicine and get better, okay? Oh—there’s no more water. I’ll go fetch some.”

With that, Georgia grabbed a bucket and hurried out the back. There was likely a well behind the house.

 …I see.

 So that’s the setup.

Her mother was sick. And the “master” here had done something for them in the past—maybe offered medicine, maybe a place to stay. In return, Georgia served him, repaying the debt.

A touching little story—ugh. Made my skin crawl.

I stayed hidden, half-hoping I’d misunderstood. But deep down, I already knew the truth.

Georgia soon returned, bucket in hand. As she reached the door and opened it, I stepped behind her and drove a needle into her neck.

 ”Wha—!? Y-You’re—”

She turned, eyes wide—then her body went slack. Her legs gave out beneath her, and she collapsed to the floor, seated as if she’d simply lost strength.

”Hey, long time no see,” I said casually. “Ah, sorry about that. I had to give you a little jab so you wouldn’t make a fuss. You won’t be able to move for a while, so just stay quiet, okay?”

”W-What are you… planning to do…?” she asked, slurring.

The neurotoxin I used was a diluted version of the poison I’d derived from a frog—the same stuff I used on that old man the other day. Despite her slurred voice, Georgia’s glare was razor-sharp. I ignored it and turned my attention to her mother.

Her cheeks were sunken from illness. Deep shadows clung beneath her eyes. But even so—

Gray hair. Large, triangular ears. Golden eyes.

Yeah. This had to be Georgia’s mother. If she were healthy, no doubt she’d be a stunning beauty.

”Good evening,” I said, stepping forward. “Apologies for the sudden visit.”

”Ah… Who are you…?” her mother asked, blinking at me in confusion.

Can’t blame her. A total stranger bursts in at this hour—after incapacitating her daughter. I didn’t look like the good guy here. But I wasn’t about to back down.

”I’m Soyuz,” I said with a brief nod. “As you can see, I’m an adventurer. I got ‘friendly’ with Georgia today.”

Georgia’s glare sharpened to a dagger’s edge. Her mother looked even more bewildered, but didn’t attempt to move. She likely couldn’t. Judging from the way her arms stayed limp at her sides, her body was entirely unresponsive now.

”So, since we got friendly, I thought I’d come visit. But it seems Mama’s come down with something. If you’ll excuse me for a moment…”

I didn’t wait for permission. Pressing two fingers to her neck, I checked her pulse, then looked into her eyes. I brushed aside her hair and gave it a quick sniff. After that, I opened the package of medicine by her pillow and inhaled deeply.

 No doubt about it.

 ”Uh, um…” her mother faltered.

”You… What are you planning to do to Mama…?” Georgia growled from behind.

Her mother looked up at me, fear in her eyes. Georgia bared her teeth in a silent snarl. I met their gazes and gave my verdict.

”This medicine is the cause of her illness. It’s poison. And a nasty one at that. If she keeps taking it, she’ll just get weaker and weaker… and eventually die.”

 ”!?”

 ”D-Don’t lie!”

Of course they didn’t want to believe me. Her mother’s eyes widened in shock, while Georgia trembled with fury—though she could barely raise her voice.

”I know it sounds hard to swallow, but it’s the truth,” I said. “And the one who created that medicine… was my mama.”

 Yeah. Mama Vintenica.

It was a poison developed decades ago. At first, the victim feels a small burst of vitality—but then, every day, their health declines. Their body slowly withers, piece by piece, until they’re nothing but skin and bones. Then they die.

Back then, I’d wondered what kind of twisted scenario this stuff was made for.

 Now I knew.

Georgia’s mother lay there, fading. At this rate, she might not even last another six months. And with this much poison in her system, ordinary treatment wouldn’t save her.

I clenched my jaw and said it.

”Normally, she wouldn’t make it. But—I can save her.”

 The room went quiet.

Georgia still glared daggers at me, but her body wouldn’t respond. Her mother stared blankly, eyes glassy like marbles. I held her gaze.

”Hey, Madam,” I said quietly. “Don’t you want to live? I don’t know your circumstances, but… are you really okay with this? Being fed poison under the pretense of gratitude, forcing your daughter to do your dirty work? You’re going to die soon. Is that really what you want?”

”D-Don’t say such nonsense!” Georgia shouted, though her voice trembled.

I ignored her and kept my eyes on the woman in front of me.

After a long pause, her lips moved.

”T-Thank you… I don’t want my daughter to do anything reckless…” she whispered.

Good. I gave a small nod. Without her consent, I couldn’t perform the ritual.

”All right,” I said. “I’ll help you.”

I stripped off my clothes and helped her undress as well. Soon, she stood before me, her frail form barely covered by a thin wrap.

”Stop it, you pervert!” Georgia cried. “Don’t do that to Mama! If you’re gonna do something… do it to me instead!”

Her voice cracked. Her eyes brimmed with tears. She’d misunderstood everything.

”I swear, by the names of my beloved Lena and Vera,” I said solemnly, “I won’t do anything indecent to your mother.”

I turned back to her mother.

Her body had been ravaged by poison. The dignified allure she might’ve once had was gone, stripped away by illness. Even the mature beauty typical of beastfolk like her had been eroded.

More importantly—if I embraced her now, she wouldn’t survive the stimulation. Just the act alone would kill her.

 So instead—

I drew my knife and cut the tip of my left index finger.

 ”Your name?” I asked.

 ”…Mor.”

”Understood. Ms. Moru. Please accept my life.”

Our eyes met. She hesitated briefly—then nodded.

 ”As you say…”

In that instant, the ritual began. A thread of magic connected us.

 ”Lick it,” I said.

I held out my bleeding finger. Ms. Mor parted her lips and touched it with her tongue.

 ”Aah…”

 ”Nnh!”

The moment our blood mingled, a ripple of pleasure shot through me. Ms. Moru’s body trembled as well. She felt it too. Yeah, I’d definitely made the right call. If we’d done this any other way, it would’ve been fatal.

”It’s really… life-sharing…” Georgia murmured behind me, voice hoarse with disbelief.

Now wasn’t the time to reassure her.

I offered my finger again. Ms. Moru licked it, her lips warm. I tried to ignore the inappropriate sensations surging through me. My body was reacting instinctively—but I had to endure it.

She probably wasn’t even aware of it, and with her turned away from Georgia, at least the girl couldn’t see.

”You’re such a pervert…” Georgia muttered. “If you act up, I’m not giving you any of my goodies!”

…Great. She caught the scent. Yeah, fine. I was leaking a little, but it couldn’t be helped.

Suppressing the wave of pleasure, I let Ms. Moru continue. Gradually, color returned to her cheeks. The deathly pallor lifted.

”All right… That’s enough for today.”

I gently pulled my finger away. There was a slight suction, as though she didn’t want to let go, but her lips finally released with a quiet pop.

I draped a blanket over her and dressed myself. Georgia stared at us like she’d just watched the impossible.

 Seriously, we didn’t do anything.

”I told you we weren’t going to,” I repeated. “Today’s session is over. But…”

”But what?” Georgia asked, eyes narrowing.

”The problem’s not solved yet. All we’ve done is keep things from getting worse. If you really want to help your mom, you need to know the truth.”

 ”T-Truth…?”

”Yeah. You need to know what kind of person your master really is. And whatever happens—don’t let her drink that medicine again. If you don’t believe me, give it to one of the mice around here. They’ll go wild for a second… and then keel over.”

I wasn’t trying to scare her. Just laying out the facts.

”The rest’s up to you,” I said. “I’m heading back. If you believe me—and if you want to save your mom—come to the inn where I’m staying. You know the place, right?”

I turned my back on her and started walking away.

”…with big p**is still out, no less.”

Yeah. That last blow hit harder than anything else tonight.
