Chapter 71 The Ddo-Buddy Trial: Beast-Person Defiance

Edited by: Kanaa-senpai

The question and answer period for the ‘Ddo-Buddy Trial’ began following the defense lawyer’s opening statement. Kento shuddered when he heard the words of the withered, branch-like old man who introduced himself as Soi, a professor at the Ajire Seminary.²

However, very few people in the room shared Kento’s dread. The ‘Inquisitors’ maintained his composed atmosphere but wore a bitter expression, and Sister Amelia’s face was sheet-white.

”This is bad. Grand Elder Soi’s finishing move exploded right out of the gate,” someone lamented.

 ”K-Kento-san…!” Amelia gasped.³

In short, most of the people present were affiliated with the ‘Church of Demon-Subjugation’. On the audience side, Laika, the dog beast-person, worried aloud, “That old man looks like a gust of wind could blow him away. Is he going to be alright?” The rest of the spectators’ reactions were similar. The only ones who truly reacted were Queen Cecile of the Canaria Kingdom and her attendant, Muse.

”This is terrible, Cecile-sama,” Muse sharply insisted.

”Indeed. What ‘amateur question’? How utterly transparent,” Cecile affirmed.

”Huh? What exactly is so terrible?” Merluza, the Captain of the Royal Guard, asked, startled by the intensification of Muse and Cecile’s already severe expressions. They replied with stern faces.

”Grand Elder Soi of the Ajire Seminary is an expert on ‘Canon Law’. He is a living dictionary with fifty years of experience as a professor and over forty as an ‘Inquisitor’, you know!” Cecile exclaimed.

”Yes. Even though his specialty is jurisprudence, as the law encompasses general civic life, it’s self-evident that he is a profound scholar on magic tools, beast-persons, and, of course, research methodologies. This is going to be a tough fight,” Muse gravely stated.

 ”N-No way…! Kento…!” Merluza cried out.

Merluza, who, despite her denials, had grown fond of Kento since the ‘Resonance’ incident, transformed her imposing lion beast-person demeanor into that of a worried maiden, clasping her hands over her ample bosom in a gesture of prayer as she watched the scene.

”Let us begin with a simple question,” Grand Elder Soi questioned, his voice slow and pedagogical. “I have heard that the beast-person female ‘heat cycle’ is quite intense. However, since I am neither a woman nor a beast-person, it is somewhat difficult for me to truly grasp the reality of it. I would like you to explain the full details of its nature.”

It was a question intended to verify whether his student—Kento—was fully aware of his research subject. At the same time, it was an inquiry to standardize the understanding of everyone in the room, including the ‘Inquisitors’.

It was a simple question, as he said, and one that, in a way, measured Kento’s competence or perhaps served as encouragement for a young researcher. Kento, who had been on edge, relaxed his shoulders slightly and began to clearly explain his view.

”Understood. First, the beast-person ‘heat cycle’ can be defined as an intense sexual urge that occurs once a month. It is essentially impossible to endure and requires some form of management. For males, release through self-stimulation is relatively easy, but even then, multiple ‘releases’ are often necessary, and it’s not uncommon for them to injure their private parts,” Kento explained.

”Hmm, I see, I see,” Soi nodded.

”For females, the management is even more difficult. Release through self-stimulation is usually insufficient, and without a suitable shaped object, they are forced to use something rod-like, which carries a higher risk of injury than for males. The general consensus among beast-persons is that the sensation is akin to hunger, thirst, or even the need for sleep, and is virtually impossible to resist,” Kento continued.

”Mmm. Just as there is no creature that does not sleep, and just as one would chew on tree bark if starved, this is a desire, or rather an instinct, one must contend with to live?” Soi mused.

”That is precisely correct,” Kento affirmed.

Grand Elder Soi stroked his chin with his withered, branch-like hand, listening to Kento with satisfaction. For the moment, Kento seemed to have passed the initial test. Merluza happily looked toward Cecile and Muse, but they had not softened their sharp gaze and were still glaring at the Grand Elder.

”Therefore, it is desirable to safely and quickly resolve this urge. And you are claiming that the method for this resolution is that very ‘Tremble-Ddo-Buddy’ over there,” Soi insisted.

”Yes, that is correct,” Kento confirmed.

”Indeed. In that case, the basis for that claim becomes vital. The documents presented show observation records and interviews. On the surface, it certainly seems to have efficacy, but are you satisfied with this investigation, young man?” Soi questioned, his gaze intense.

”…I can’t quite grasp what you’re trying to say, but I believe the investigation was the best that could be done,” Kento replied.

It was a lie. Kento understood the meaning of the Grand Elder’s unspoken words. Yet, he hadn’t imagined the contents would be scrutinized this thoroughly. He involuntarily bit his lip.

”Hmph. Simply put, I can see several ‘holes’ in this investigation. One: was a one-month investigation of only twenty-two individuals sufficient? Two: as is written, your intervention was involved, but did this ‘accident’ not adversely affect the research? These are the main two points,” Soi summarized.

The atmosphere in the room began to turn unsettling. Merluza finally understood why Cecile and Muse’s eyes were so sharp. Some in the audience, unaccustomed to such proceedings, were infuriated, thinking, “What a mean-spirited old man!”

Kento, too, broke out in a cold sweat from being hit on a sore point, and almost burst out laughing at the highly emphasized word ‘holes’, but he tensed his stomach muscles to keep it from showing on his face. He decided to answer honestly and sincerely. This old man wasn’t trying to be cruel; he was trying to reveal the truth.

”Then, regarding the first ‘hole’, I would ask you in return: how much investigation would be sufficient? This research was the maximum possible given the time until the trial and my personal connections,” Kento challenged.

 ”Oh?” Soi questioned.

”The same applies to the second ‘hole’. If one were to conduct research without my presence or other external factors, it would necessitate methods such as restraining collaborators before and after their ‘heat cycle’ and observing their ‘release’ through a peephole in a sealed room. Would such an inhumane investigation be permissible?” Kento insisted.

”I see, I see…. So you assert that this research data is without flaw?” Soi pressed.

”To the extent of what was possible for me. If more is required, you are welcome to conduct an additional investigation. Although I do not believe the results or counter-examples obtained would be worth the effort,” Kento finished.

Grand Elder Soi smiled. His own question had been countered by practical reasoning, and he showed understanding for Kento’s common-sense attitude. While a certain degree of reservation might be necessary, he thought, the efficacy of the ‘Tremble-Ddo-Buddy’ could be admitted.

”Mmm, mmm. That is a most reasonable assertion. I believe we can, for the time being, concede the efficacy regarding the beast-person female ‘heat cycle’,” Soi announced.

”W-Wait a minute, Grand Elder Soi!” A loud voice interjected.

However, a challenge was raised. One of the ‘Inquisitors’, an imposing man standing in the center, interrupted Grand Elder Soi’s statement. The presiding Archbishop Trantestar spoke to him.

”Cardinal Mork, Your Eminence, if you have an opinion, please raise your hand,” Trantestar wearily stated.

”Gunu nu, you, Trantestar…!” Mork hissed.

It was the Cardinal who had most vehemently opposed the resumption of the ‘Tremble-Ddo-Buddy’ sales during the meeting where the ‘Ddo-Buddy Trial’ was decided.

He had originally held reservations about this ridiculously named magic tool, but in the last month, a ‘reason’ had emerged that made it absolutely necessary for him to designate the device as a ‘Forbidden Tool’. That reason was that ‘a certain exalted person’ had taken an interest in the ‘Tremble-Ddo-Buddy’.

In truth, he didn’t want to attend this trial at all. But given that ‘that person’ was interested, he couldn’t possibly stay away. What in the world was this? Why did grown adults have to seriously debate a vibrating shaped object? He interjected his objection, loaded with fury.

”I am Cardinal Mork! I object to this ludicrous document itself! What in the Holy name is this? It’s practically erotic literature! Where is the evidence that these ‘observation records’ are not merely your own fiction!” Mork protested, his voice commanding and full of contempt.

It was an objection that sought to overturn the entire trial. The hall was once again wrapped in an unsettling atmosphere. The first to react to the Cardinal’s words was Grand Elder Soi.

”Hmm, Cardinal Mork, that is something you ought not to say. It is an insult to the defense counsel’s efforts. Even we would not scrutinize a paper to that extent at a presentation,” Soi stated, his brow furrowing slightly.

”It might be so in an academic conference! The purpose is the search for truth, and all participants have clearly established identities. But this is a court of law! This man has a clear financial interest if acquitted, and he is a man of unknown origin who hasn’t even graduated from a seminary or even an academy!” Mork insisted.

As Grand Elder Soi said, such a statement was the end of the line. But Mork had a point. Those who knew Kento well would be certain that it wasn’t fiction, but to the ‘Inquisitors’, he was just some upstart of unknown parentage.

Consequently, Grand Elder Soi couldn’t form a second word, and Kento couldn’t raise a voice in counter-argument. Just as a major upheaval in the trial was foreshadowed, a hand subtly rose from the audience. Noticing her, the presiding Archbishop called out.

”Excuse me, it seems there is someone requesting to speak. Are you here to support the defense counsel?” Trantestar questioned.

”Yes. I believe the party concerned should answer the current question. I am Suu, the secretary at the ‘Canaria Kingdom Royal Capital Beast-person Mutual Aid Association’. As you can see, I am a cat beast-person,” she declared.

She stood up, her tail fur bristling and puffed out—the same gesture a cat makes when intimidating an opponent. She strode determinedly toward the witness stand where the ‘Tremble-Ddo-Buddy’ continued its vibration. Suu exchanged places with Kento and began her testimony with a dignified expression.

”Sample No. 19 in the document is me. If you insist that words alone are insufficient, I will testify that what is written there is the truth. I will also answer any questions you have about the descriptions. Please confirm as much as you like,” Suu insisted, her voice firm and defiant.

”Wha—!” Cardinal Mork’s eyes widened. Everyone in the hall instantly began to murmur. It goes without saying that even for beast-persons, who are generally open about sexuality, to identify oneself before a document that minutely recorded the release of their ‘heat cycle’ was the height of shame.

Yet, without even flushing, she stood tall and proud. She invited them to scrutinize the document detailing how she caressed her own chest, how she played with her core, and how she stirred her internal passage with the ‘Tremble-Ddo-Buddy’. It was the figure of a proud warrior.

”Secretary…” Kento whispered, trembling with emotion.

She responded to his whisper with a gentle smile. Seeing this, the other collaborators could not remain seated.

”I-I can testify, too! Sample No. 1 is me!” Laika, the dog beast-person, enthusiastically exclaimed.

”I-I will also testify! I’m Sample No. 8!!!” Merluza passionately declared.

”S-Sample No. 9 here!” Aerith-jou of the Garou Merchant Guild followed. She hesitated only because she had caused a ‘Resonance’ by losing control of herself, but she raised her hand powerfully, and others followed suit, declaring their sample numbers.

It was a protest by the beast-person women. Cardinal Mork scowled, and Grand Elder Soi narrowed his eyes. The beast-person men, including Guild Master Chromans, who knew the terror of their women’s anger, tucked their tails between their legs and shuddered. Of course, the ‘Tremble-Ddo-Buddy’ kept on trembling.

”Do you have anything further to say, Cardinal Mork?” Soi questioned softly.

”G-Gunu nu…. Very well, I shall concede the efficacy regarding the beast-person female ‘heat cycle’…” Mork spat out.

Thus, the resumption of the ‘Tremble-Ddo-Buddy’ sales was approved, though only for the limited scope of beast-person females. The hall erupted in cheers, centered around the defiant women. The trial had reached its halfway point.

 Summary:

The Ddo-Buddy Trial started intense with expert Soi dismantling Kento’s research methods, nearly invalidating the core documents. Cardinal Mork, furious and under pressure from an unknown ‘exalted person,’ tried to disqualify the entire report as mere ‘erotic fiction.’ Just when Kento was cornered, Suu, a cat beast-person and one of the test subjects (Sample No. 19), made a defiant stand, publicly claiming the explicit documentation was truthful. This act of courage triggered a powerful protest from the other beast-person women, including Merluza, shaming the Cardinal into a partial concession and securing the device’s legality for beast-person women. The battle for the magic tool is far from over.

 Character Insight:

Soi is not an enemy; he’s a true scholar seeking truth, which ironically helps Kento by legitimizing the study’s scope. Kento shows a strong moral core by refusing ‘inhumane’ research methods, which buys him respect. Merluza’s deep-seated affection for Kento is clearly influencing her emotional state, turning the fierce Lion Captain into a worried girl. Suu, the cat beast-person, is the hero of the hour—her defiance and willingness to face shame for the greater good (and for Kento) proves the central theme of the beast-persons’ plight.

 —

 Behind the Scene:

The Cardinal’s extreme opposition is not just about morality; it’s about a superior, a ‘certain exalted person,’ who has taken an interest in the Tremble-Ddo-Buddy’. This is the real, hidden source of the Church’s desperation to ban it—it suggests that high-level politics and possibly even royalty are now involved, raising the stakes from a mere legal case to a major political conflict.

 T/L:

² The Ajire Seminary is a major theological and legal center, establishing Soi’s immense authority in both Canon Law and general academic scrutiny.

³ The fact that Kento’s allies (the Inquisitors) are terrified suggests that Grand Elder Soi is such an overwhelming figure that even his initial, simple questions are understood as tactical maneuvers that lead to inevitable defeat.

⁴ ‘Canon Law’ is the body of laws that govern the Church. Being an expert in this implies being an expert in the entire social and moral structure of the world, making Soi an intimidating opponent.

⁵ ‘Aerith-jou’ – jou is an honorific attached to a young woman’s name, typically one from a good family or high social standing, like a ‘lady’ or ‘miss.’
