Volume 6 Chapter 2 Diplomatic Letter

Edited by: Kanaa-senpai

About a month before Halt visited the Nevada base.

Halt’s father, U.S. Army Major General George Anderson, was summoned by his father, President Mihail Anderson¹, and visited the White House.

”Hey, Dad. How are you doing?”

”Yeah, the whole thing with that issue has finally calmed down. We’re secretly investigating not just the otherworld, but UFOs, UMAs, ESP… but well, the ‘Occult President’ nickname isn’t going away anytime soon.”

”Hahaha. But you don’t seem too unhappy about it.”

”Well, I guess I do have some otaku talent in me. Still, this time it was a real cold sweat situation. Who would’ve thought the fire would rise from right under our own party’s feet?”

”Spade King the senator, right? Why did he of all people stick his nose into your work, Dad? If things keep going like this, won’t he be the next presidential candidate?”

”Yeah. I’m not running for a third term anyway. He understands classified matters pretty well too. The fact that he made his move at this timing means…”

 ”Means what?”

”He’s viewing the otherworld matter as a vested interest. So he’s probably probing us and the public in advance, observing if he can take control of it smoothly once he becomes president,” George said.

”I see. Before being a politician, he was the head of a global IT corporate group. But because of that, if he’s not careful, even the military or AWCC might not be able to control him.”

”We can’t let that happen. Worst case, we might have to bow to Queen Asuka and say ‘Humanity was still too immature to interact with you,’ close the Gate. If it comes to that, I might have to rely on you.”

”Well, if it comes to that, I’ll do my best. So, Dad, that’s not why you called me today, right?”

”Yeah…” Saying that, President Anderson took a letter from his drawer.

”This is a letter from Queen Asuka. It came via the spirit clan’s² regular delivery the other day.”

”A letter from Her Majesty… an official diplomatic missive?”

”Diplomatic missive… maybe. But the content isn’t formal at all; it’s full of consideration, or compassion… Read it.”

The original in elf language had an English translation attached.

 ”Understood. Then…”

George took the letter and began reading it on the spot.

 —

Dear President of the United States, Mr. Mihail Anderson,

The capital of Zerlant Kingdom¹, Baiden³, has had unusually hot summer weather this year, but as autumn approaches, we can finally enjoy cool evening breezes. That day, wanting to feel the night wind myself, I stepped out onto the balcony from my private chambers, and there was Ms. Akari, who had just put my daughter to sleep, gazing at the beautiful full moon. And Ms. Akari muttered something, but I couldn’t quite catch it, so I asked her.

 —

* * *

”Mama Akari. What did you just say?”

”Oh, Your Majesty. It’s nothing much… The moon was so beautiful, I couldn’t help but recall a poem from my homeland.”

”Oh? A poem from the human world? That’s very interesting. Please, tell me too.”

”Well… but if Your Majesty says so, I can’t refuse. Alright then…” Saying that, Ms. Akari taught me the poem.

”‘When I gaze up at the fields of heaven, might it be the moon that rose over Mount Mikasa in Kasuga?’ Sorry, Your Majesty. I can’t translate it well into elf language.”

”No, I get the gist. It feels like you’re nostalgic for your homeland’s moon…”

”Yes. This is a poem from a very long time ago in our country. This person went to study abroad across the sea to the neighboring country, but on the way back, he encountered a storm and could never return home, spending his whole life there. Seeing the same moon as his homeland, he immersed himself in feelings of longing for home… Ah, sorry. It’s not like I’m crying because I want to go back home!”

”…I understand. I’m very grateful for how Mama Akari works so hard every day for me and Shushu. But… yes, it’s been nearly thirty years since you came here…”

Then Ms. Akari bowed to me and returned to her room, but I strongly felt I wanted to somehow respond to her feelings of longing for home. However, with the rules for people’s travel not yet fully established, I can’t just let Ms. Akari go back on personal whim… It was something I’d vaguely considered before, but now I wish to make that plan a reality.

My daughter Shushu-ria is already eleven years old and has become quite able to think about things logically. Her future is still unknown, but as one of my important successor candidates, I want her to gain various experiences while young.

So, I would like to consult with President Anderson: could you please let Shushu-ria study abroad there for about a year? Of course, since your world is unfamiliar to her, I want to send Ms. Akari along as her guardian.

I know this is a sudden request and would cause you much trouble, but we’ll provide bodyguards and such from our side, and if you could let her learn among the common people, not as a VIP’s child.

I would be deeply grateful if you could consider it.

 Queen Asuka of Zerlant Kingdom.

* * *

”This… Does it mean Queen Asuka is using her daughter as a pretext to let Ms. Akari return home?” George couldn’t hide his surprise.

”You can take it that way. But… indeed, having their princess see and experience our world, and develop familiarity with us, could help restart exchanges someday, even if we temporarily close the Gate.”

”Yes… but we can’t treat her as state guest… What do we do?”

”No problem. She says treat her as a commoner in the city streets, and it’s incognito anyway. Let’s have the Anderson family host the princess. Plus, if Akari comes back, Tomori will happily cooperate too.”

 ”Hahaha. Right!”

After that, the two secretly discussed and planned for the princess and Ms. Akari’s group, when they come, to spend time in Okinawa with the cooperation of Japan’s Kashiwagi family. And for that, not only Tomori but also Halt was decided to cooperate, without his own consent.
