Volume 10 Chapter 51 A Multitude of Trials

Edited by: Kanaa-senpai

 ”A full-scale assault on Orrid¹?!”

Count Grasso’s voice thundered in sheer astonishment.

”Is that the truth?” the Count demanded.

”Yeah. Our comrades gave us the heads-up-ssu. The enemy forces are massing and trending north again,” Klock replied.

Klock had been summoned to discuss the approaching Barreith² army, but he reported the Orrid invasion as if it were mere happenstance. As a member of the Brave Knight³, it wouldn’t seem suspicious for him to possess private intelligence channels.

”Count. If this is verified, wouldn’t a return be prudent? Their numbers reach a hundred thousand. The paltry garrison at Orrid will surely be overwhelmed,” noted a man who appeared to be a close aide.

Two such aides stood in attendance, with Ada positioned nearby. The city officials were conspicuously absent; it seemed the Count intended to handle the Barreith situation using only his personal troops.

”The word is that the Barreith army numbers around three to four thousand-ssu. If so, they’re likely the ones who were meant to rendezvous with the Demon Lord’s Army previously stationed in Portline,” Klock observed.

”Most likely. Their numbers are far too meager for a solo strike,” the Count agreed.

”Won’t you leave them to me?” Klock asked, taking a bold initiative.

The gazes of Ada and the others snapped toward him.

”Ho. And just what do you intend?” the Count asked.

”I’ll sue for peace. Now isn’t the time to squander a single soldier, and we want to avoid unnecessary attrition. I’ll make those fellows turn tail back to Barreith,” Klock declared.

Presenting a half-hearted suggestion to a man like this Count would be a fatal error. In truth, Klock had zero certainty, yet he pitched his plan with a tone that cast aside all self-preservation.

”You can actually pull it off?” the Count asked.

”Without a doubt,” Klock stated firmly.

It was a blatant lie. He was merely banking on things working out.

”Very well. Ada,” the Count said.

 ”Uissu,” Ada replied.

The Count gestured dismissively toward Klock.

”Place yourself under Klock’s command. As the vanguard, neutralize the Barreith army, and then strike across the Diva Plains,” the Count commanded.

 ”…!!”

Crossing the Diva Plains meant neutralizing the Barreith forces and immediately proceeding to Orrid as reinforcements.

”Count Grasso. Isn’t it a bit problematic for Ada’s squad to serve under a newcomer like me-ssu? Ada herself might be a loyal subordinate to you, Count, but I doubt her men will be so accommodating,” Klock pointed out.

”Manage them. You’re a Brave Knight, aren’t you?” the Count challenged.

”…Are you serious-ssu?” Klock muttered under his breath.

This man was starting to make truly absurd demands. Klock stole a glance only to meet Ada’s narrowed, sharp eyes. He hurriedly looked away.

”Klock. I have high expectations for you. I’m not referring to the recent skirmish at Portline, but rather the military procurement. Your tactics were aggressive, but they suit my tastes. I didn’t expect you to satisfy my requirements in such a short window. You have a gift—a business talent. You should be conducting trade under my banner rather than playing adventurer,” the Count stated.

”Business-ssu?” Klock asked, blinking in surprise.

The real results of his labor weren’t even supposed to be visible yet. For some reason, Klock found himself being showered with uncharacteristic praise. He wondered if this was the Count’s subtle way of acknowledging he’d seen through Klock’s schemes—specifically, the fraudulent fund-siphoning operation that made ‘tax evasion’ look like child’s play.

”I shall consider this an investment. Take Ada and those three thousand vanguard troops, crush the Barreith army, and then pivot west. Depending on the outcome, I’ll promote you on the spot. I am handing you an opportunity on a silver platter. Be sure to seize it,” the Count said.

”…Understood-ssu,” Klock replied, his mind whirling as he accepted.

This meant the rowdy adventurers of Ada’s squad were now officially his responsibility. Would they actually follow his lead? Not a chance. He had walked right into a disaster.

”Ada. You understand the situation as well, don’t you?” the Count asked.

”…Yes,” Ada replied, her resentment palpable.

It was only natural. From her perspective, Klock was a greenhorn. Upon entering Dayrid, he had been her subordinate, yet now the hierarchy had flipped. It was enough to make anyone’s blood boil.

”You lost your unit at Basselow and fumbled the engagement at Sanrid. While I respect your martial prowess, you lack vision and intellect. Do not let your emotions cloud your judgment. Pay attention to the details you usually dismiss as trivial. Learn that much from this man,” the Count lectured.

 ”……”

Klock felt her glare bore into him for a heartbeat, but he pointedly avoided eye contact. She refrained from vocalizing any spite in the Count’s presence, but her silence was anything but calm.

The probability of a mutiny or a massive headache was roughly a hundred and twenty percent. He had inherited an incredible burden. This joint operation was shaping up to be a nightmare.

* * *

”If the Vampires are being mobilized, it signifies…”

”That the battle to determine the fate of this front is finally upon us,” Primlena and Kispe murmured, conversing amongst themselves.

As representatives of the various races who had rallied to the Hero’s side, this was the pivotal moment that would validate their choices. It was time to see if their gamble would pay off.

Returning to the monastery, Klock immediately convened a meeting of his inner circle. Kispe and Alice had been waiting, looking quite bored, while Primlena, Suzette, and Flavia arrived the moment they were summoned. Meina, who had been dispatched to gather everyone, returned shortly after, and the usual faces assembled in the chapel.

”Hey everyone, sorry for the wait!” Fit announced as she entered.

”Hey, Fit. Grab a seat over there,” Klock said.

The ace adventurer of the Brigante entered with her usual infectious energy, having fully recovered. Clad in her signature light armor, she looked ready for a fight. As a rare A-rank talent, Klock expected great things from her on the field.

 ”H-hello…”

”Yo, Klock. We made it,” a gravelly voice added.

Following behind were an unfamiliar timid voice and a familiar raspy one. The raccoon Beastkin Gonmi peeked through the door, her fluffy dog-like ears twitching nervously. Boit followed close behind, giving her a gentle shove. Naturally, both were part of Klock’s summoned group.

”Boit. It looks like our little business venture is over for now. We’re moving out of Dayrid and heading for Orrid,” Klock announced.

”So the enemy is finally here, huh? Not like I’ll be much help on a battlefield,” Boit grumbled.

”Nonsense. You’re the backbone of the Brigante. I’m putting you in charge of logistics, so I’m counting on you,” Klock countered.

”You really love making unreasonable demands,” Boit muttered.

Boit’s performance had been stellar; he possessed an uncanny knack for shrewdness and profit. He wasn’t the type of man you could simply drag along by calling him a ‘private arms dealer.’ Recognizing his worth, Klock had decided to secure his loyalty with a substantial sum and a senior officer position.

Klock had designated Gonmi as Boit’s direct assistant. He had effectively conscripted her under the pretext of debt repayment. A subtle reminder of what might happen to her siblings should she refuse had been enough to secure her ‘enthusiastic’ cooperation.

In truth, she was merely a merchant’s daughter who had been forced to support her siblings after their parents’ early passing. Her involvement with the Majin had been born of desperation for coin. Klock felt a twinge of pity, but military necessity meant he couldn’t overlook her aid to the enemy.

”Gonmi. Don’t even dream of deserting. As long as you work, your siblings will be well-fed. Put in the effort and clear that debt,” Klock told her.

”H-hey!! You can count on me!!” Gonmi squeaked in response.

Klock had guaranteed her siblings a comfortable life in Dayrid. In exchange, he intended to work Gonmi to the bone.

”Boit. Scour the markets and gather as much food as you can today,” Klock ordered.

”Again with this? Do you ever actually plan anything?” Boit asked with a sigh.

”The enemy is breathing down our necks; we don’t have the luxury of time,” Klock replied.

”…Fine. Just give me some extra hands,” Boit requested.

Klock knew Boit had been working tirelessly, hiring labor and sprinting through the markets. Now that he was officially part of the Brigante, he deserved proper support.

”Suzette. Assist Boit. Take a contingent from the Brigante and buy up every scrap of food you can find. I want at least two weeks’ worth. Grab a carriage, water barrels, and fire magic stones too-ssu,” Klock commanded.

”As you wish,” Suzette replied smoothly.

With Suzette’s competence, the procurement of daily necessities would be handled flawlessly.

”Meina. I need the exact location of the human forces approaching from the north,” Klock said.

”Got it! I just need to scout them out, right?” Meina chirped.

As a scout with the ‘Lightning Feet’ ability, she would be back in no time. Klock felt a bit guilty for leaning so heavily on her now that Cianie was away, but he needed her speed.

”Alright, let’s begin the council. You’ve likely heard, but the Demon Lord’s Army is on the move. Their objective is Orrid. Rumor has it the Moon Court has also been mobilized, so we’re looking at a full-scale offensive. The Brigante will serve as the vanguard. Our task is to intercept the Barreith army and then push west to link up with the Orrid garrison,” Klock explained.

”You’re planning to take on an entire army with just three hundred people again?” Fit asked, eyebrow raised.

”No, this time we have three thousand. The Brigante and the vanguard unit formerly led by Ada have all been placed under my command,” Klock clarified.

Technically, only the three hundred Brigante members were his direct subordinates, but he had been granted authority over the entire three thousand.

”Ho. Leading a force ten times our previous size? If you can manage such a host, we might actually have some room to breathe in the coming trials,” Primlena noted.

Moving from hundreds to thousands changed the entire scope of the conflict. It was a staggering realization. How many people in history had ever commanded thousands? This was arguably the pinnacle of Klock’s career—the kind of story he’d brag about to his kids one day.

”If I may be so bold as to offer my perspective,” Flavia interrupted, her voice steeped in formal, archaic tones.

”In our previous engagement, twenty thousand enemy troops were routed—a staggering defeat by any measure. Yet, far from being deterred, they are preparing for a major escalation. While this presents an opportunity, I cannot shake the feeling that a hidden hand is at play,” Flavia cautioned.

”I agree. Even for monsters, you’d expect some hesitation after twenty thousand were scattered to the winds. They might be desperate for a win, or perhaps they’ve found a definitive way to breach Orrid,” Klock mused.

A battlefield is a place where lives are bartered. Determination to win keeps a soldier’s blade moving, while news of defeat can paralyze even the bravest heart. When morale crumbles, desertion becomes the only logical path for many.

If the Majin who fled Portline have already spread word of their rout, the logical move for the enemy would be to regroup. The fact that they are pushing north anyway simply didn’t make sense.

”The enemy is already in league with Barreith; their conspiracy is deep. If Orrid is betrayed from within, it will fall in a heartbeat,” Flavia added.

That was the greatest danger. If the gates were opened from the inside, their efforts would be for naught. Orrid might even be lost by the time they arrived.

”Kispe. Primlena. What are your thoughts?” Klock asked, turning to the two who had once served within the Demon Lord’s Army.

”Our adversary will be Bandanzine,” Primlena stated with absolute conviction.

”Bandanzine is renowned as an unrivaled master of warfare. His mere presence will cause the Demonkin morale to skyrocket. They are attacking because they are certain of victory,” Primlena explained.

”I cannot say for certain without more intelligence, but I concur with Ms. Primlena. Mr. Roldi’s sudden departure was undoubtedly a recall. It’s highly probable he’s joined the assault on Orrid. In all likelihood, we are facing the main force commanded by Mr. Bandanzine himself,” Kispe added.

Their insights as former commanders were proving invaluable.

”So the legendary Earth General Bandanzine is finally making his move. If we’re facing the main host, the caliber of the enemy will be on a different level entirely,” Klock remarked.

”It’s not just about quality; actual Demonkin soldiers will be involved,” Primlena noted.

Demonkin soldiers—the regular, disciplined core of their army. This wouldn’t be a simple horde of monsters anymore; they were facing humanoid adversaries of the highest order.

”A direct confrontation sounds suicidal,” Klock muttered.

”You will face an uphill battle of unprecedented difficulty. The Demonkin’s independent Magic units possess terrifying destructive power. Moreover, his arrival means the possibility of a personal encounter. Frankly, the Brigante currently possesses no one capable of besting Mr. Bandanzine,” Kispe warned.

”Not even if Meina, Primlena, and Flavia all gang up on him?” Klock asked.

”Only the other Four Heavenly Kings or his closest inner circle truly know the extent of his power. My recommendation is to avoid an engagement at all costs. Even reaching him will be a nightmare, as you’ll have to bypass the Demonkin elite guards, Mr. Roldi included. To put it simply: in the blood-soaked history of the Demon Continent, no one is recorded to have even landed a single scratch on him,” Kispe explained.

Klock absorbed the information. Targeting the commander was a standard tactic, but if no one in the land of carnage had ever succeeded, the man was a monster in his own right. Previous foes were starting to look like warm-up exercises.

”Elite guards, huh? Those Demonkin units really are the real deal,” Klock said.

”They are the cream of the crop—the very ones who once unified the entire Demon Continent through sheer military might. On paper, they are the most formidable army in existence,” Primlena confirmed.

He had expected as much, but hearing it was still sobering. He wished the Hero were here, but her mission to strike the enemy’s rear would eventually pay dividends. If the Demon Lord fell, the rest of them would have to retreat.

”And then there are the Vampires. We’ll be facing threats from both land and sky. We cannot win this without a comprehensive strategy,” Flavia pointed out.

”Mr. Roldi’s weakness-toxin is another massive variable. He won’t use it carelessly for fear of friendly fire, but if he finds an opening to deploy it against our forces, it could be the end of us,” Primlena added.

The list of threats was seemingly endless. Even with a larger army, Klock’s situation hadn’t improved one bit.

”Roldi is more than just a threat; he needs to be our top priority for elimination,” Klock decided.

Roldi had to be handled, perhaps even through assassination. If that toxin hit their ranks, the devastation would be total. It was a desperate thought, but these were desperate times.

”Does anyone know anything else about Bandanzine’s specific abilities? A Unique Skill, specialized magic, or even just rumors?” Klock inquired.

The room fell silent as everyone looked at each other.

”His personal combat skills remain a mystery, but his tactical genius is legendary. He is widely regarded as a master of the field. His prowess in warfare is so absolute that some suspect it might be tied to a specific skill,” Kispe mused.

Without seeing him in action, it was all speculation. Klock also noted that while Bandanzine was male, his magic power was supposedly great enough to nullify Kispe’s Cursed Eye. A man with that much power could likely wield any magic he chose with ease.

They were facing the most powerful army in history—the one that had subjugated all other races. And they were led by Earth General Bandanzine. Without a perfect plan, defeat was a certainty.

On one side was a battle-hardened juggernaut; on the other, a human army softened by centuries of peace and a commander who had been a common thief just a decade ago. To even think about victory felt like the height of arrogance.

But it’s not like I’m empty-handed. I’ve got Primlena, Flavia, and Meina. And maybe Kispe will actually do something for once.

Then there was Viola. The Vampires would be accompanying the Majin, striking from the air. How was he supposed to counter that?

They didn’t have an air force, and they couldn’t exactly mass-produce anti-air weapons overnight. Orrid was a mountain fortress with high walls, but even that offered little protection against an aerial assault.

 ”Yo,” a voice called out.

The chapel doors swung open, admitting a group of both familiar and fresh faces.

Ada, Raki, and Alard led the way, followed by about a dozen others dressed as adventurers. Klock didn’t know the names of the rest.

”What do you want?” Flavia demanded, stepping forward to intercept them.

”Flavia, stand down. They’re Ada’s squad; I invited them to the council,” Klock explained.

He assured her they weren’t there to cause trouble, and she reluctantly stepped aside.

”Whoa. Is that a Forestkin?” one man whispered.

”Yeah, and there’s a Fishkin over there too,” another added.

Alard and his companions stared openly at Primlena and Flavia. Klock realized he hadn’t warned them about the demi-humans, and the girls hadn’t bothered to hide their features. Their identities were immediately apparent.

”Well, you certainly keep interesting company. So these are the Hero’s allies, huh?” Ada said with a smirk, though her eyes remained cold.

She focused her gaze on Kispe, as did Raki and the others. As seasoned adventurers, they could sense the sheer weight of the magic power radiating from the small girl. They realized instantly that she was the most dangerous person in the room.

”Staring at me like that… have you lesser races no concept of manners?” Kispe asked coolly.

”…What?” Ada’s smirk vanished as Kispe let out a sigh.

Without missing a beat, Kispe offered a thin, predatory smile and turned her amethyst eyes toward Primlena and Flavia. They shared a knowing nod. When Kispe’s gaze returned to Ada’s group, Klock felt a chill run down his spine.

”It’s a pleasure to meet you, embarrassments of humanity ♡ To you filthy, stinking adventurers: we shall begin with a lesson in etiquette. Drop to your knees and introduce yourselves while showing your equipment,” Kispe commanded, her voice like a siren’s song.

YES!! the men bellowed in unison.

They hit the floor simultaneously and began fumbling with their belts and trousers.

 ”What?!” Ada exclaimed in shock.

”You idiots! What the hell are you doing?!” Klock roared, cutting them off.

”Oh, I’m so sorry, Master. You wouldn’t want me seeing other men’s ‘equipment,’ would you? I shouldn’t defile my eyes like that ♡ Even though I’m already your property, I was being so careless ♡” Kispe teased.

”That’s not the point! What’s gotten into you?!” Klock shouted.

The adventurers, who were seconds away from exposing themselves, froze. Confused by their own sudden impulses, they scrambled to stand up.

”Who said you could stand? Stay right where you are,” Primlena commanded, her trident appearing in her hand as if by magic.

The spearhead was aimed directly at them. One man, however, remained standing with his hands raised. It was Raki. He had somehow resisted Kispe’s Charm.

”…What is the meaning of this?!” Ada demanded, her eyes wide with fury. She looked ready to draw her weapon, her hostility toward Kispe absolute.

”Is this not the standard treatment for a hostile element?” Kispe asked innocently.

 ”Hostile element?!” Ada repeated.

Flavia stepped in to put herself between the two women.

”Your lack of respect for our lord is inexcusable. Did you honestly think we would tolerate such insolence toward a member of the Brave Knight?” Flavia asked sternly.

”Huh? We haven’t done anything to you guys!” Ada argued.

Kispe rose and walked toward her with an elegant, almost playful stride.

”Whether you’ve acted yet is irrelevant. Your hostility is the problem. To face the Demon Lord’s Army, we need absolute unity. Subversive elements like you are a liability just by existing. There’s no telling when you might betray us for your own gain. Subjugating you now is simply a matter of military efficiency,” Kispe explained coolly.

”…Subjugating us…?” Ada echoed, her voice trembling with rage.

Klock wondered if this was payback for how he’d been treated at their camp. He’d tried to let it slide, but it seemed Kispe and the others weren’t so forgiving.

Did I even tell them what happened with Ada’s squad? My head’s such a mess I can’t even remember who I told what.

”Hold on! I didn’t authorize any of this!” Klock interjected, trying to stop the infighting before it turned bloody.

”Master, you are being naive. When the Hero returns, we will have to show her what we’ve accomplished. Do you think she’ll forgive them? And if we let them run wild, will she forgive us? Never forget who the truly terrifying one is,” Kispe reminded him.

 ”……”

Klock had no answer. He knew that if Cianie found out how Ada’s squad had treated him, she’d probably break every bone in their bodies. He realized he had underestimated how much the girls were focused on the Hero’s expectations.

”Ada,” Raki said, his voice firm as he held her back.

”Let’s just swallow our pride and apologize,” Raki added, surprising everyone.

”…Are you serious? After they just did that to us?” Ada hissed.

”We’re in the wrong here. We were looking down on them, and that’s a fact. You’ve been telling us not to underestimate them because you knew what they were capable of, right?” Raki countered.

Showing the maturity of an A-rank adventurer, Raki knelt beside Ada.

”We were wrong. Please, forgive us. We’ll follow your lead. That’s why we came here today,” Raki said sincerely.

The room fell silent as his apology hung in the air.

”…Fine. My bad. Though for the record, I didn’t actually say anything myself,” Ada muttered, looking away with her arms crossed. She refused to kneel.

”Alard, you apologize too. Don’t think your insults haven’t reached their ears,” Raki prodded.

The punkish man gnashed his teeth and glared at Klock.

”………I’m sorry…” he spat out, clearly hating every second of it. The rest of the squad followed suit, offering half-hearted apologies from their knees.

”Well, that’s a shame. You’re more reasonable than I expected. I was actually looking forward to ‘educating’ the man who managed to resist my Charm for a few seconds,” Kispe said, her eyes lingering on Raki with a predatory glint.

”Charm of the Cursed Eye…? The legendary Unique Skill rumored to be the most wicked in history?!” Raki’s composure finally broke, his eyes widening in shock.

”Just who are you people? Are you Brave Knights too…?” Alard asked, his voice bitter.

He was clearly a capable adventurer, but the fact that he’d been so easily ensnared suggested he was only around high B or low A-rank. In this room, that wasn’t enough.

”I’m the only Brave Knight. These ladies are… associates of the Hero. Think of them as her personal retainers,” Klock explained.

He decided it was safer to use Cianie’s reputation rather than claim them as his own ‘harem’ or some such nonsense.

”You already know you’re under my command now. I’m not thrilled about how this went down either, but it’s a job. Just deal with it,” Klock told them.

It was an awkward situation, but his loyalty lay with Kispe and the others. He thought they’d gone a bit overboard, but the deed was done.

 ”…”

Ada and the others remained silent. Klock noticed Fit watching the exchange with bated breath, her face unreadable.

This is a disaster. The tension is even worse than before. How the hell am I supposed to lead them? And it’s all the Count’s fault.

These people had fought their way to the top and earned their place under the Count. Being suddenly handed over to a newcomer like Klock was an insult to their pride. Klock really wanted to give The Golden Count a piece of his mind for this mess.

”Alright, no more complaints. Let’s focus. We have four thousand troops from Barreith coming from the north. They were meant to coordinate with the Demon Lord’s Army from Portline to hit Dayrid. Since that host is gone, these guys are likely operating on old intel,” Klock explained.

”And we were the ones who wiped out the Portline force. We might be outnumbered, but they’ll be a lot easier to handle than twenty thousand monsters,” Primlena added, pointedly highlighting their accomplishment.

Alard and the others bristled, but Flavia’s glare kept them in check. It was clear that neither Primlena nor Flavia had any love for the newcomers. Kispe just giggled while Alice smirked. Klock found their Succubus-like amusement at the tension a bit unnerving.

”I have a plan for them. If we play it right, we might not even have to draw our swords,” Klock stated.

 ”…No fighting?” Ada asked, surprised.

”If it’s Ludovico leading them, we might have a chance at peace,” Klock replied.

”We move out tomorrow morning. I’ll give you the details then. Get some rest and be ready,” Klock ordered.

He dismissed them quickly; the atmosphere was too toxic to continue. As they filed out, the looks they gave him made his stomach churn. The battle for the fate of humanity was starting, and his own side was already at each other’s throats.

The next day, after their brief stay, Klock and his forces departed from Dayrid.

 —

 Summary:

Klock is promoted to vanguard commander by Count Grasso, inheriting three thousand troops including Ada’s resentful squad. The group prepares for a massive demonic invasion led by the Earth General Bandanzine. Tensions explode in the chapel when Kispe uses her Charm to subjugate the disrespectful adventurers. The chapter ends with the uneasy alliance departing Dayrid to face the approaching Barreith army.

 —

 Character Insight:

Klock’s internal conflict between his ‘Brave Knight’ persona and his self-perceived identity as a former thief highlights his imposter syndrome as he takes command of thousands. Meanwhile, Kispe and the demi-human women demonstrate a fierce, almost territorial loyalty to the Hero’s reputation, using their overwhelming power to enforce a hierarchy that the human adventurers are forced to accept, albeit with deep-seated bitterness.

 —

 Behind the Scene:

This chapter shifts the scale from small-party skirmishes to grand strategy, introducing Bandanzine as a primary antagonist. The tension between the ‘new’ Hero companions and the ‘old’ established military/adventurer order reflects the common light novel trope of the protagonist’s irregular group disrupting traditional social structures.
