Deep in the mountains of Okutama, it would be hard to link that lonely village on top of Mount Mitake with the name ‘Eastern Tokyo.’ Even with a cable car to the world below and turning into a famous tourist spot, the place on the mountain has lasted a long time as an object of faith; a different air from the normal world flows there.
”Lord, ¹ have mercy (Kyrie)… (Eleison) ――”
In the narrow streets of that temple town (aka toriimae-machi), a woman’s high voice rang out. A group of nuns in black clothes and hoods moved forward, their boots making noise as they sang.
’Lord, have mercy.’
Following the voice of one leader, three sisters repeated the prayer.
”Christ, ² have mercy (Christe)… (Eleison) ――”
’Christ, have mercy.’
From the roofs of buildings on the path, a group of ayakashi, including Intermediate Youkai, jumped at the nuns.
”―――――!!”
”To ayakashi, (Kyrie) the Lord’s mercy is unneeded (Eleison) ――,” Sister Cecil said.
’To ayakashi, the Lord’s mercy is unneeded.’
The group did not even look at them, hitting them away with only the words of prayer. Using the Sacrament³ through holy songs was a basic skill for Christian exorcists, but also a secret art. The woman at the front pressed the call button on her earphone and spoke. She was a beautiful girl whose cheeks, red like roses inside her hood, would catch any man’s eyes and not let go.
”――To District Command. This is First-class Exorcist Dushan Cecil. We have started fighting the ayakashi.”
The answer from command was hidden by the light ‘ta-ta-ta’ sound of guns. The second-class exorcist sisters of the choir, who shot three bullets into the ayakashi, held their holy assault rifles to protect Cecil’s left, right, and back.
”We will stay here and fight. Tell us if the situation changes. Over.”
Cecil finished her report and instructions, then touched her earphone button to end the call. She closed her hazel eyes. As she used her senses, she felt the ayakashi coming up the mountain. This mountain was an object of faith—not just the top, but the whole mountain—and while it was different from Cecil’s faith, it was not just a tool for humans. The road to ‘the other side’ sometimes tricks people—and Cecil and her choir are female exorcists with high Reiryoku⁴. Even without youma, they are a big prize for ayakashi, and they are also pure virgins who stay holy to use their power.
”――Glory to God (Gloria in) in the highest (Excelsis Deo).”
The wind moved up the mountain, bringing the smell of ayakashi full of greed. Cecil sang a song to give glory and a song to ask for help. With the help of the Sacrament, the choir made God’s holy work happen on earth with bullets. Ta-ta-ta, ta-ta-ta, ta-ta-ta—the gun sounds continued. Three is a holy number. Every time the three-round burst sound repeated, the bullets cut down the ayakashi. Both Lesser and Intermediate Youkai fell down in the middle of the song. This work was steady and safe, showing they worked hard as the Cathedral’s elite unit every new moon. Their smooth magazine changes looked like a holy rite.
But――
”Tonight is quite a noisy night,” Cecil muttered quietly.
”――――――!!”
Right after, a loud roar like it was not from this world shook the mountain. Wind hit the village and the nuns. Birds woke up and flew away, their cries echoing in the mountains.
’――District Command to First-class Exorcist Dushan Cecil. A Great Youkai is coming to western Mount Mitake. Waveform is Oni. Repeating, a Great Youkai is near. Waveform is Oni――’
”――Dushan to Command, understood. We will get ready to fight,” Cecil replied.
Cecil looked back at the choir. They were young girls her age, but they were not scared of the Great Youkai’s aura.⁵
”Get ready to go down the mountain――!?”
As she said that, the ayakashi presence got much stronger, making the nuns’ skin crawl.
”This feeling…!”
”Inside the barrier?!”
’Emergency news from Command! The Great Barrier is still there, but the Great Youkai has entered inside the barrier――!’
The cold feeling was because the Great Youkai entered the barrier and they felt its aura directly.
”Sister Cecil. Maybe we should go back to the shrine grounds,” one sister suggested.
Even if the monster entered the Great Barrier, the shrine has another guard. But Cecil shook her head.
”If we lose it in the mountains, it will be hard to find. We will kill it here,” Cecil said.
Cecil gathered her Reiki⁶. She put her hands together and prayed. Small ayakashi might run away from this power. But the enemy was a Great Youkai, a Blue Oni. Hate, anger, and pride—bad feelings that humans have—were deep in its heart. With such a good smell of prey, it would not be smart.
”It took the bait,” Cecil thought.
She felt the youki moving toward the northeast, then slowly coming up the mountain. Without rushing, Cecil moved to a slightly open area called Umeda. The choir spread out to the left and right to see better while guarding her.
”――――O, o, o, ohhh.”
Then, through the shadows of the moon, the Oni appeared. It was almost four meters tall with a big head. it walked on four legs like a beast. Its skin was a dull blue, and its face was hidden by messy black hair. The old cloth on its waist was pushed up by a hard penis as thick as a man’s arm, and it smelled like a wild beast.
”An evil Oni,” one sister muttered.
Usually, the stronger an Oni is, the more it looks like a beautiful human. But this Blue Oni looked like a monster and still had the power of a top-tier Great Youkai. It showed that its strong hate became its body.
”――――”
The Blue Oni muttered things no one could hear and moved closer to the nuns.
”――Holy, Holy, Holy (Sanctus).” ⁷
Cecil prayed and sang the Trisagion. The choir pointed their guns at the Oni and joined her.
’Holy (Sanctus), Holy (Sanctus), Lord God (Dominus Deus) of hosts (Sabaoth)――’
Clean energy spread as the sound grew. But this is a land of eight million gods; there was no reason for an Oni to bow to their Lord’s glory.
”――――!”
The Blue Oni got angry and ran at Cecil at the front.
’Heaven and (Pleni sunt) earth are full (Caeli et terra) of your glory (Gloria)――’
’Thud!’ The ground shook, but the Oni’s big body stopped one meter in front of the nun like it hit a wall. It scratched the dirt and used its claws, but it could not get closer.
”Hosanna (Hosanna in) in the highest (Excelsis).”
Cecil opened her eyes as the song ended. With a sound like glass breaking, the Oni was flipped onto its back. A giant black snake came out of Cecil’s shadow and went under the Oni’s body. The assault rifles shot on full-auto. After shooting all their bullets, the sisters reached under their skirts, pulled pins, and threw things at the Oni.
’Grenade!’
The holy hand grenades bounced on the Oni.
”―――――!”
Cecil put up her invisible wall again as the fire and boom swallowed the Oni, making it scream.
