An oppressive gloom hung over the living room, as if demanding to know where the absolute euphoria of the wedding from a few hours ago had vanished. Well, the culprit was standing right in front of us.
”That was the final vision my master beheld,” said Nyx, currently wearing the form of Yamihama.
That was the problem. Being forced to witness every detail of the end of Yamihama and her party was enough to turn anyone’s stomach. Because of the gravity of the situation, the entire Clan-everyone who had just been at the ceremony-was gathered in the lounge. Alisha, Mariana, Tatei, and Yokoo were there, along with Alice and Sango. They were all still dressed in their wedding finery.
”So,” I asked. “What exactly do you want from me?”
”Avenge my master.”
She’d said as much when she first arrived. But honestly, did I really owe them that much? More importantly…
”Why me?”
That was the real question. I had hidden my face, my identity, and even my Status. Yet she had sought me out with pinpoint accuracy. How did she even find me?
”As far as I am aware,” Nyx said, “you possess the highest possibility of slaying the Demon King.”
How could she possibly know that? We had no prior connection.
”Are you familiar with the sorcery known as Shadow Walk¹? It allows one to traverse the world through the darkness. I used it to gather intelligence from across the lands, and I happened upon you by chance. It was while you were slaughtering that Great Ant swarm, if I recall.”
Ah, that. Everything clicked. She had likely tracked me through the shadows to reach this place.
”Therefore,” Nyx continued, “I am certain you possess the strength required to butcher the Demon King. I ask you once more. Avenge my master-“
”I refuse,” I said.
Nyx’s expression froze. She clearly hadn’t considered the possibility of a rejection.
”Why?” she stammered.
”Reason number one: I have no cause to antagonize the Demon King. Greedia hasn’t been attacked by demons yet. Maybe there’s been some scouting, but no actual damage. I’m not about to poke a thicket just to let a snake out.”
I leaned back, my voice flat.
”Reason number two: I have no obligation to help a Hero I don’t know, and I certainly see no point in ‘revenge.’ I’m not interested in cleaning up someone else’s mess.”
In truth, I’d wanted to finish those guys off myself to take their Unique Skills, but it wasn’t a necessity. If the Demon King killed them for me, it just saved me the effort. As far as the world knew, Sieben had zero connection to them.
”Reason number three: I hate that Goddess.”
That was the big one. Why should I do anything that wretched woman suggested? Being summoned to this world had already cost me my life twice over. It wasn’t a joke. Alisha and Mariana both stared at me, their eyes wide at my bluntness.
”That’s it. And for a bonus: you ruined the wedding mood. Consider this a bit of spite.”
”But… based on my master’s memories, that short, busty maid and her twin are Heroes as well,” Nyx argued, looking toward them. “What say you?”
”Don’t call me tiny! Alisha snapped. “I’m Goshujin-sama’s thrall. I go where he goes, and I happen to agree with him completely.”
”Likewise,” Mariana added. “I have no desire to go on a suicide mission for no reason.”
They shot her down without a second thought. Nyx, unable to accept the refusal, began to raise her voice.
”You are Heroes! It is your sacred duty to defeat the Demon King! Stop this selfishness and listen to m-!”
Nyx’s voice cut off abruptly. Had she been human, she would have turned pale with terror.
”You,” I said quietly. “Shut up for a second.”
”Ugh… a-ah…!”
I flared my Intimidation² toward her.
”Are you here to ask for a favor? Or are you here to make demands? Because you aren’t in any position to be giving orders.”
”Ghp… the Spirit King… being suppressed by a mere human…?”
I increased the pressure. If she didn’t get the hint now, I’d simply erase her.
”…My apologies,” Nyx managed to choke out. “That was… a lapse in judgment. Please, disregard it.”
”Glad we understand each other,” I said, releasing the pressure.
Nyx let out a ragged breath of relief as the crushing weight vanished.
”Now then, Nyx-san, was it?” Lil asked, her gaze icy. She was clearly still livid about the ruined wedding. “Why is it that you can’t even bow your head when asking for help? Why do you act like a superior demanding a tithe? For a ‘Spirit King,’ your manners are atrocious.”
”Why should I have to bow to-! I… I understand. I was indeed disrespectful.” Nyx bowed her head deeply. “Please. I beg of you. Avenge my master. Slay the Demon King.”
I would have preferred a full dogeza³, but this would suffice.
”Fine. If you accept my conditions, I’ll consider it.”
”Really? Thank you! What are the terms?”
”Nyx. You belong to me now.”
”That… is…” Nyx hesitated.
”What’s the problem? It’s a simple trade.”
”As a Spirit King… I am bound by a contract of protection. Even though my master has perished, that pact remains active. I cannot simply transfer myself to you…”
So, unless I possessed the Unique Skill Darkness Protection of a Spirit King⁴, she couldn’t form a new bond. Typical. I used Eyes of Truth⁵ to appraise her. The results were fascinating.

The numbers aside, the Status confirmed it: Yamihama was dead. But the assimilation ratio was the key-70% Yamihama, 30% Nyx. She had become a bizarre hybrid, an “undying” corpse maintained by the Spirit King’s essence. And she had the title.
It wasn’t a problem for me, though.
”I am truly sorry,” Nyx said. “But because of the pact, I cannot be yours-“
”Actually, that’s not a problem at all.”
”What do you mean-!?”
I lunged forward, grabbing Nyx by the head, and used Snatch⁶ right out of her.
”What… what did you do?”
”I just took the protection,” I said. “Which means… you’re mine now.”
Nyx-or rather, the entity that was now Yamihama’s body-gaped at me in sheer terror. She clearly never imagined a Unique Skill could be stolen so effortlessly.
”…Incredible. But this means you will grant my request, yes?”
”Sure. I’ll give it some thought.”
Nyx sighed in relief. Regardless of her pleading, I was actually getting interested in this Demon King. From what I’d seen in the vision, Medinilla seemed to despise the Goddess as much as I did.
And more importantly…
The skills that the Demon King used-Time Compression and Ice of Sloth… those were the exact same Sloth-series skills that I possessed.

Tries to rescue Sugita, so she’s technically doing the “holy” thing, but it’s still an awkward, politically messy move for a royal Saint.
• Alisha – Fluffy pink‑haired miko with a huge, triple‑digit chest who’s way more dangerous than she looks. Kidnapped along with the merchant’s daughter and the rest, she’s a member of the Renegade clan. Wields a spiked morning‑star mace like it’s a fashion accessory. Looks gorgeous and holy, but when tortured, she flips into full psychotic mode—chaotic, unhinged, and survivability‑mode only.
• Alice – A small, adorable girl summoned by Yokoo. Based on the ‘Red’ and ‘Black’ Majin versions. Stronger than Tate or Yokoo. Celadon Rank Monster Hunter.
• Sango – A bunny-girl with long white hair and red eyes; younger sister of Torimaki Ichigo.
• Tatei – Full name is Tatei Kozoo. Natsumi’s otaku buddy. Used to be tall and solid, now he’s 186 cm of skin and bones after anorexia wrecked him (52 kg, yeah, rough). Has the skill Materialization Alchemy and once crafted gear for the whole class. Ended up making the X‑shaped restraint stand used for Sugita’s execution—dark twist for a guy who just wanted to make cool equipment.
• Yokoo – Natsumi Sasaki’s otaku friend. His appearance is based on ‘Yoko’ from ‘Comic Party.’ Possesses ‘Materialization Summoning’. Accompanied by a Living Armor.
• Tate – Male Otaku friend of Reese. Gaunt and thin, wears glasses. Possesses Materialization Alchemy skill.
• Sieben – Young man with black hair and a mask covering his eyes. He purchased Honoka and Ria.
• Lil – One of the heroines. Height 166 cm, B-W-H: 90-56-90. She is a top-tier beauty with long indigo hair down to her waist, a large scar on her abdomen and sharp golden eyes. She has wolf ears and a tail.
• Haine – A high school student summoned to another world. She has lost her left arm and her lower body, which she supplements using the power of the Spirit King Nyx. Her appearance looks whole due to her skill.
• Medinilla – The Demon King from two generations ago. She has pale blue skin, long silver hair, goat-like horns, and golden eyes with black sclera. She has a petite, loli-like appearance and wears a twilight-colored dress with red roses.
• Ren – Height 169 cm, weight 50 kg. A cool-headed guy with glasses who aimed to be a lawyer. He viewed bullying as a minor issue and stood by while Natsumi was tormented.
