Chapter 194 Yamato Hina and the Demon King Medinilla ①

The new arc begins!

”We finally made it.”
”Yeah. This is where our journey ends. Everyone gets saved.”
In front of the massive double doors, Mizuki Ren nodded at Hizaki Shogo’s words. It had been a long, grueling road. Almost a year had passed since that day we abandoned Sasaki Natsumi – since we pinned all our sins on him. It was far too late for regrets, but I still felt a deep, biting remorse for being swept up in Sugita Kazuo’s lies. I had been a fool. I was terrified of the fact that we had caused Sasaki’s death, and even more terrified to admit it. I see now just how pathetic that cowardice was.
”Will this even count as atonement? No… probably not,” Shogo said, laughing with a self-deprecating bitterness. “I played the hero and did absolutely nothing. What a joke. I’m a failure as an ‘ally of justice.’”
Shogo’s smile was forced. He’d always been a bit childish, obsessed with those old special effects shows and sentai heroes. He looked the part, too – short with a baby face – but that youthful energy had vanished long ago. He clearly felt he was no longer worthy of the title he once admired. His right arm was gone from the elbow down, lost in the battles that had led us here.
”If you’re a failure, then what does that make me?” Ren asked. “I never even tried to stop the bullying. Someone like me has no right to be a lawyer.”
Ren had dreamed of practicing law back home. Of course, that dream died the moment we were summoned to this world, but the guilt of his silence had eaten away at him. A jagged scar ran from his forehead down across his cheek; his left eye had been gouged out during a skirmish, leaving him completely blind on that side.
There was one more boy with us: Kazamatsuri Gyobu. Despite the grand name and his claims of being a “ninja descendant,” he was a massive kid, standing well over six feet. He had suffered the most brutal injury of all – his throat had been crushed, leaving him nearly mute. He communicated mostly through writing, insisting it wasn’t a hindrance, but the silence between us only made things more uncomfortable.
”That vile Demon King,” spat Todoroki Hazumi. “I’m going to make her regret sending those monsters after us. She’ll pay for these scars.”
Hazumi was tall, her hair pulled back in a sharp ponytail. She’d been a star in the kendo club, once praised as a “young sword saint,” but now her face was twisted in a permanent mask of fury. Despite seeing that monsters preyed on demons as much as humans, she refused to acknowledge any nuance. She had already slaughtered innocent demons in her rage. She was convinced that everything was Sasaki’s fault, too. Her world was small and painted only in black and white.
Beside her stood Amanozuka Teruaki. She used to be the class mood-maker, always laughing, always bright. Now, she was a hollow shell, her face an expressionless mask. She was the one who had laughed the loudest while Sasaki was being tormented.
Both of them were… complicated, to say the least.
Shortly after we entered the Demon King’s territory, they had been snatched by an orc pack and subjected to unspeakable violations. Hazumi had taken the horrific step of cauterizing her own womb to ensure she never bore a monster’s child, leaving her barren. Teruaki had been forced to carry several of the creatures to term, and her mind had simply snapped under the weight of it.
”Once we kill the Demon King and get back to our world, everything will go back to normal. Right, Yamihama?” Hazumi looked toward me.
”Yeah,” Shogo added, the others nodding in somber agreement. “Besides, Yamihama, you’ve got it the worst out of all of us.”
He was right. I was in the worst shape. I had lost my left arm and my entire lower body. The only reason I looked whole was because of my Unique Skill, ‘Dark Protection of the Spirit King.’ I was literally using the body of Nyx, the Spirit King of Darkness, to patch the holes in my own existence. Mizuki knew basic healing magic, but nothing powerful enough to regrow limbs. It was a miracle I was even breathing.
I turned my gaze back to the double doors. The Demon King was waiting.
Surprisingly, the doors weren’t the grotesque, bone-chilling gates I had expected. They looked like any other castle doors – maybe even a bit plain compared to the throne room back in Leoness. The castle itself followed suit. It wasn’t some jagged, vine-choked fortress of evil. It was just a castle. Even the Demon King’s lands were lush and fertile, despite the high concentration of mana in the air. I hadn’t even heard any particularly evil rumors about the ruler here. Hazumi insisted the Demon King was the root of all evil, but the locals seemed to think she was a decent leader.
Still, we had to kill her. We had to get home. And maybe – just maybe – if we got back to our world, Sasaki would be alive there, too. We clung to that desperate hope.
”Let’s go,” Shogo commanded. “We kill the Demon King, and we go home!”
We pushed. Despite their size, the heavy doors swung open with startling ease. We stepped into the throne room, which was vast but otherwise unremarkable. And there, at the far end…
”Welcome, Heroes,” a high-pitched voice rang out like a silver bell.
A girl sat on the throne, her legs crossed casually. She looked human at first glance, but the details gave her away. Her skin was a pale, icy blue, and her long hair was a shimmering silver. Goat-like horns curved from her temples, and her eyes – gold pupils set against pitch-black sclera – glowed with an inner light. She was beautiful, dressed in a gown the color of twilight adorned with red roses. She was small, petite – almost like a child.
”Are you the Demon King?” Shogo asked.
”I am noja,” she replied, laughing softly. “I am the Demon King Medinilla noja. Or, to be more precise, I am the Demon King from two generations ago noja.”

”Two generations ago? What does that mean? Where is the current one?”
Medinilla tilted her head. “Oh? Did the Goddess not tell you? Your job was to kill the current Demon King noja. But that boy had no manners, so I (warawa) disposed of him myself noja. You should be happy noja. Your journey is technically over noja.”
”What…?” Shogo stammered.
”I don’t understand,” Ren cut in. “What do you mean it’s over?”
”The Goddess sent you to kill the Demon King who was threatening to wipe out humanity for no reason noja,” Medinilla explained calmly. “Since I’ve already killed him, you’re off the hook noja. No need for any more blood to be spilled noja.”
We had suffered, bled, and lost pieces of ourselves to get here, and she was telling us it was all for nothing?
”Don’t screw with me!” Hazumi screamed, drawing her blade. “You sent those monsters after us! You’re the source of all of this!”
”Actually, the monsters are a nuisance to us demons, too noja—”
”Liar! Prepare to die, you monster!”
Hazumi didn’t wait. She lunged, her body flickering with the electricity she used to boost her reflexes.
”Die, you evil—!”
CRACK.
Hazumi was gone. She blurred past us at a sickening speed, slamming into the far wall.
”Honestly noja,” Medinilla sighed, still sitting cross-legged. “I told you to listen noja. For the record, that was self-defense noja. She swung first noja.”
Hazumi lay on her back, her body twitching rhythmically before falling still. Her chest – right where her heart was – had been caved in. It was a crater the size of a fist. She had died instantly.

”You bitch!” Shogo roared. “You killed Hazumi!”
”Am I supposed to just sit here and let her murder me noja?” Medinilla asked. “That’s hardly fair noja. She attacked me noja.”
”That doesn’t give you the right to—”
”Fine, fine noja. I didn’t realize she was quite so fragile noja. You have my apologies for her death noja. Truly noja.”
The sound of grinding teeth echoed in the silent hall. We couldn’t beat her. Even without moving from her throne, she had ended our strongest fighter in a heartbeat.
”So, what now noja?” Medinilla asked. “You can leave if you like noja. I won’t stop you noja.”
”If I tuck tail and run after you killed my friend, I can’t call myself a man,” Shogo hissed.
”Vengeance isn’t usually my thing,” Ren added, “but if the Goddess isn’t taking us back, it means we have to go through you to get home.”
”I see noja. You really trust that Goddess, don’t you noja? How quaint noja.”
”I trust her more than I trust a monster like you.”
We raised our weapons. It was suicide, and we knew it.
”We’re going all out,” Shogo yelled. “Ifrit, dwell within me!”
”Vritra, lend me your strength!”
”St…ri…bog…”
”…Horus.”
Each of us began to channel a Spirit King¹ into our bodies. Every member of this party possesses the “Protection of a Spirit King” blessing². By raising our levels, we can move beyond mere summoning and manifest these entities directly within our own flesh. This is known as Possession Summoning³. I normally maintain a partial possession with Nyx, the Spirit King of Darkness, but a half-baked transformation like that wouldn’t stand a chance here.
”Nyx, descend into me completely!”
As I fully submerged myself in Nyx, our entire party underwent a metamorphosis. Hizaki was engulfed in roaring flames, while scales shimmered across Mizuki’s skin. Kazamatsuri didn’t change much physically, but his hair turned a vibrant green as he became a living conduit for the wind. Amanozuka Teruaki radiated such a brilliant light that his very silhouette seemed to blur. My own change was subtle yet profound – I was suddenly draped in a gown of deepest obsidian, my skin taking on a faint, violet hue. More importantly, everyone’s missing limbs – lost in the brutal battles leading up to this – were fully restored.
”Oho? So you’ve taken the Spirit Kings into your own bodies, have you?” the demon king asked.
”Damn right,” Hizaki said. “And this is where we win! Prepare yourself, Demon King!”
”Cackle… hahahaha! To offer up your very flesh in hopes of striking me down… what spirit! Truly marvelous! In honor of your resolve, I suppose I shall get a little serious myself.”
The demon king spoke with grandiosity, yet she remained lounging on her throne.
”You call that being serious?!” Hizaki shouted. “You’re still sitting down! Stop taking us for fools!”
”I’m doing no such thing, little ones,” she replied. “Now come, show me what you’ve got.”
She likely didn’t intend it as a slight, but to us, it was the ultimate provocation.
”Fine. Have it your way,” I said. “‘Gravity Press’⁴!”
”…Hm? Oho, this is…”
I unleashed a crushing weight, a hundred times that of normal gravity, directly onto the demon king. It should have pinned her down so thoroughly she couldn’t even lift a finger.
”Now! Let’s make her regret ever looking down on us! ‘Inferno Blaster’⁵!” Hizaki yelled.
”‘Maelstrom’⁶!” Mizuki shouted.
”‘Vortex’⁷!” Kazamatsuri cried.
”‘Plasma Cannon’⁸!” Amanozuka roared.
We unleashed our ultimate sorceries in a single, coordinated burst. Explosive flames, high-pressure water, a localized hurricane, and a searing plasma beam collided in a cataclysmic display. Thick, acrid smoke filled the chamber. Not even a demon king could survive a barrage of that magnitude.
”Did… did we get her?” Mizuki asked.
I winced. That was a total death flag.
The billowing smoke froze solid.
I know how ridiculous that sounds. But the smoke actually froze. Then, the ice shattered into a million glittering shards, revealing the demon king. She was completely unscathed, sitting on her throne with her legs crossed as if she were merely bored.
”No… no way…” Hizaki stumbled back.
It was impossible. Every one of us was possessed by a Spirit King. Our abilities had been boosted to god-like levels. And she didn’t have a single scratch?
”So, that was your ‘serious’ effort?” she asked. “Well, I suppose it couldn’t be helped. The gap between our strengths is simply too vast. Now, it is my turn. Do try to defend yourselves.”
The temperature plummeted. A biting chill seeped into the very marrow of my bones. It felt as though the entire world was turning to ice. My very cells began to crystallize.
”Dammit… don’t underestimate me! ‘Inferno Blaster’! …Wha-!?”
Hizaki fired his Inferno Blaster, but the “unquenchable” flames froze mid-air.
”This is insane! Those are the fires of hell!” Hizaki screamed.
”You’re a slow learner, boy,” the demon king said noja. “My ice won’t melt for something as pathetic as hellfire. Honestly, calling those sparks ‘the fires of hell’ is an insult to the abyss itself. Now then… is that all? If so, you may as well die where you stand-noja.”
”G-GUAAAAAAAGHHH!”
Hizaki was encased in ice, becoming a silent, frozen statue. Then Mizuki, then Kazamatsuri, then Amanozuka… and finally, me. My consciousness began to drift. I had survived losing half my body before, but looking at this, I knew – there was no coming back.
With the last of my strength, I gripped my fading consciousness and issued one final command to Nyx.
You can have it all. My soul, my body – take everything. Just avenge us. And if you can’t… then find someone who can. Someone who can kill the demon king and settle our debt.
-Understood. Sleep now, The Master.
Nyx’s voice resonated deep within my mind. Simultaneously, I felt myself being swallowed whole by the darkness.
”Hm? One of the pillars escaped-noja?” the demon king mused. “Ah, well. No matter-noja.”
The demon king’s voice was the last thing I heard. It wasn’t enough. We weren’t enough. Please… someone… carry on our will. Someone, please… kill the demon king –
With that final prayer, my world went black.

Author’s Note:
The demon king turned out to be an ancient brat lol. And my classmates were such total jobbers… Starting next chapter, we’re heading back to Natsumi’s POV.

Character Insight:
Hizaki Shogo struggles with his identity as an ‘Ally of Justice,’ feeling he has failed his ideals by surviving at the cost of his classmates.
The narrator transitions from desperate hope to a cold, sacrificial resolve, prioritizing vengeance over their own existence. The Demon King displays the ‘loli-baba’ trope, combining a childlike appearance with immense, ancient power and a condescending attitude.
—
Behind the Scenes:
The author notes that exam delays due to COVID-19 allowed for more frequent updates.
The author notes that the classmates were ‘jobbers’ (sacrificial characters meant to lose to show off the villain’s strength) and pokes fun at common web novel tropes found on sites like Shosetsuka ni Naro.
