Chapter 203 Yamato Hina and the Demon King Medinilla ⑩
Edited by: Kanaa-senpai
It was an attack by the Demon Race¹-specifically, the Ogre-kin.
To avoid inciting unnecessary panic, the news had been kept under wraps. However, the citizens had already sensed something was wrong from the frantic movements of the knights and soldiers. I, Yamato Hina, had been informed of the situation by the chairwoman, Carmilla.
”I’m going as well, and I’d like you to come with me,” Carmilla said. “I won’t force you, though.”
I told her I would be glad to help and joined her. Naturally, my attendant Ise and my classmate Kagaya also came along. Preparations took time, especially for a five-thousand-man subjugation army consisting of professional soldiers like knights, infantry, and mercenaries. Because we were more mobile, our small group went on ahead.
But we were too late.
By the time we reached the town of Viede, the Ogre-kin were already raiding the streets. The Monster Hunter Guild in town had already alerted the guild in the royal capital. I worried we were too slow, but apparently, a communication device provided by Greedia had allowed the message to be sent instantly.
The subjugation army was likely forced-marching toward Viede at this very moment, but casualties were inevitable. We immediately set to work, slaying the invading Ogre-kin and guiding the residents toward safety.
”Good grief, they’re faster than I expected…” Carmilla muttered as she ran.
”What do you mean?” I asked.
”Even demons are living creatures,” Carmilla replied. “Think about it. How many days has it been since Fort Misone fell?”
”Oh…” I realized what she was getting at.
It hadn’t even been ten days. Seven, to be precise. Even if the fort had fallen in a single day, they shouldn’t have reached us this quickly.
”A blitzkrieg²,” Ise noted. “And they’re completely ignoring their supply lines.”
Carmilla nodded at Ise’s assessment. “As for supplies… they’re likely plundering every village they pass. Which means the people living there have probably been massacred.”
Massacred. The thought of innocent villagers being slaughtered in cold blood made my blood boil. But the situation was even worse than we thought.
”The Lord is missing? He ran away?!” Carmilla cried out in shock after questioning a guard at the gates.
As soon as the Lord of Viede had realized the Ogre-kin were coming, he had grabbed his valuables, bolted the gates to the Noble District, and fled-abandoning even his own wife and children.
Like most large cities, Viede was surrounded by walls and divided into a Commoner District and a Noble District. The Noble District was further protected by its own inner wall, with only one gate connecting the two. Currently, a massive crowd was surging toward that gate, but it remained stubbornly shut.
”Open this gate right now!” Carmilla commanded.
”But the Lord gave strict orders not to open it for any reason-” the guard stammered.
”Are you going to let these people die?” Carmilla barked, her voice thick with intimidation. “In fact, you’ll be the first to die if you stay out here! If you want to live, open this gate and let them in!”
Driven by her sheer intensity, the guard threw open the doors. The crowd surged forward instantly. Even though the gate was wide, the sheer number of people created a bottleneck. At this rate, no one would get through, and people would be crushed to death in the panic.
”This is bad,” Carmilla scowled. “It can’t be helped. They might notice us, but it was going to happen sooner or later. Hina, Kagaya, Ise-get back and cover your ears!”
We did as we were told. Carmilla moved away from the crowd and drew a deep breath.
”Calm down!” she roared, her voice amplified by wind sorcery. “If you keep pushing, no one gets through! We will hold the line! Follow the guards’ instructions!”
The roar was so loud that my ears rang even with my hands over them. It would certainly alert the Ogre-kin, but as Carmilla said, we were running out of time. The panic subsided slightly, and the residents began filing into the Noble District in an orderly fashion. Just as things seemed to be smoothing out, a voice boomed from the shadows.
”I thought I heard a loudmouth. To think there were so many of you hiding here.”
We had been spotted. Or perhaps the knights holding the perimeter had already been wiped out. The sight of a dozen Ogre-kin sent the residents back into a blind panic, and they began trampling one another to reach the inner district.
”This is bad. Ise! Kagaya!” I shouted.
”Ready, my Lady,” Ise replied.
”Yeah, we’ll stop them here,” Kagaya added.
I drew my sword and raised my shield. Ise produced several throwing knives from nowhere, gripping them between her fingers. Kagaya leveled her staff and immediately began chanting.
”Fire Wall!”
A wall of roaring flames erupted between us and the Ogre-kin. A few of the monsters charged straight into the inferno, only to emerge as screaming, living torches.
”Aaaagh! It burns!”
”What is this power?! It’s on another level!”
The residents gasped in awe as they saw the demons fall. But the celebration was short-lived.
”Ho… quite impressive,” a lone Ogre said, stepping through the wall of flames. He didn’t even flinch. “But it’ll take more than a campfire to stop this old man.”
He emerged with only a few singed hairs.
”You’ve got to be kidding me,” Kagaya muttered, staring at the monster’s sheer toughness.
”No, no, that was a fine spell. If it were anyone else, they’d be dead for sure,” the Ogre laughed.
”I’m honored,” Kagaya replied sarcastically. “Mind telling us your name?”
”Very well. You three look like warriors worthy of hearing it,” the giant said. “Listen well! I am Bolgano, the Flame Demon General!”
”I thought as much,” Kagaya said, sweat beading on her forehead.
General Bolgano was a head taller than the other Ogres, with short-cropped red hair and skin to match. His muscles were so dense they looked like they could deflect a cannonball.
”I don’t care much for humans, but I don’t hate strong ones like you,” Bolgano said.
”Well, I happen to hate boorish, barbaric men like you,” Ise shot back.
I bit my tongue to keep from pointing out that she hated men in general. I wasn’t a fan of the “muscle-bound brute” type either, but that was beside the point.
”Hah! Good spirit! I expect a grand fight. Tell me, what are your names?”
”Yamato Hina,” I said.
”I am Maya Ise, attendant to my Lady, Hina. Not that you’ll need to remember it for long,” Ise said coldly.
”Mashiro Kagaya,” Kagaya added.
”Hina, Maya, and Mashiro? I’ve carved them into my memory,” Bolgano grinned, raising a massive, jagged cleaver. “Now, let us dance with death!”
Bolgano charged. For a man of his size, he was terrifyingly fast. He closed the distance in an instant and swung his cleaver down at me. I parried the blow with my shield, but the impact nearly shattered the bones in my arm.
”Hah!” Ise flicked her wrist, sending a barrage of knives into the Ogre’s chest. They struck home, but Bolgano simply flexed, and the blades popped out of his skin like they were nothing.
”Monster,” Ise spat.
I lunged forward with a diagonal slash, but Bolgano caught my blade with his cleaver. While we were locked in a stalemate, Kagaya unleashed her sorcery-‘Aqua Spread,’ the same spell Yuki used to favor. Bolgano shoved me back with brute force, taking the watery blast head-on.
”Nngh… good! That’s it! But you’re still holding back! Show me your true strength!”
He was right. Probing attacks wouldn’t work. It was time for Physical Enhancement³. Humans normally only use thirty percent of their strength to prevent their muscles from tearing themselves apart. With enhancement, I could go all out.
Ise did the same, her body blurring as she activated her Unique Skill, ‘Afterimage.’ She didn’t just move fast; she created tangible clones of herself. Meanwhile, Kagaya began compressing her mana, a technique she’d developed to double the destructive power of her spells.
”Oho! Now you’re talking! I suppose I’ll have to get serious too!”
Bolgano’s killing intent flared, turning the air heavy. He looked like he was genuinely enjoying himself.
”Guhahahaha! Here I come!”
Bolgano raised his cleaver for a crushing blow. I braced my shield and prepared to meet him. Ise’s knives flew like silver streaks, and Kagaya’s mana reached its breaking point. Just as our strikes were about to collide, a man dropped from the sky and cut between us.
