Volume 3 Chapter 12 An Angel’s Sleeping Face

Edited by: Kanaa-senpai

It was just after noon, the day after the Totsuka family returned from Mitsuhisa-san’s trip to his childhood home¹.

 Oof!

Suu-chan is tackling me with everything she’s got. To be specific, she has my head locked in a double-arm chokehold, pinning me down with her chin. The point of her chin is digging into the crown of my head – it actually kind of hurts. (This won’t cause hair loss, stunt my growth, or give me a stomach ache, will it? There shouldn’t be any medical reason for that… if anything, maybe she’s just hitting a pressure point?)

 ”Hmph…”

Ignoring my existential dread, Suu-chan lets out a huff of pure dissatisfaction. She’s probably puffing her cheeks out right now, but the fact that I can’t witness her “royal pout” is a crying shame. Could someone please bring me a mirror?

”Suu-chan, look! It’s snack time,” Mitsuhisa-san said. “Don’t you want to turn that frown upside down?”

 ”No!”

 ”Guh!”

Mitsuhisa-san collapsed. He went from a polite kneel straight onto his face. It looked like he took the full impact on his nose. (Is he even alive?) Still, lunch wasn’t that long ago. Trying to bribe her with food is a losing game. See? Even Mio-san is giving him a look of pure pity. A literal aura of gloom is wafting off the back of Mitsuhisa-san’s head as he face-plants on the floor. I mean, I get it. If my own daughter rejected me that coldly, I’d be in bed for a week.

From the safety of my side, Suu-chan uses her little toes to poke at the back of her fallen father’s head. (Hey now, that’s poor manners… but Mitsuhisa-san actually looks happy just to be acknowledged, so I guess I’ll let it slide.) As for why Suu-chan is in such a foul mood, it’s because she didn’t get to play with me for two whole days. On top of that, she expected to see me the second she woke up this morning, but the long trip must have wrecked her internal clock. She ended up oversleeping so hard she didn’t wake up until right before lunch. It seems to have been a massive shock to her system; she was sobbing so hard she was hyperventilating. It might be the most upset I’ve ever seen her.

It’s not like Mitsuhisa-san actually did anything wrong, but he just happened to be the closest target for her misplaced anger. I can only say my condolences. Even though she’s “grumpy,” she isn’t actually pushing him away; she’s just being a brat about her affection. No one besides the victim is taking it seriously. She seems to have simmered down since lunch, anyway. Case in point: Mother and Mio-san are hovering nearby with a camera, clearly enjoying the show. I’ll have to check that footage later.

Suu-chan stops using her dad as a footrest and starts stroking my hair instead, burying her face into me with a tight squeeze.

 ”Mu… fu…”

Apparently, this is her way of finding her Zen. Yeah, she’s reached total peace of mind.

”Makoto, swap places with me,” Mitsuhisa-san said.

”I don’t think I’m the one in charge of that. You’ll have to ask Suu-chan,” I replied.

 ”Suu-chan?”

 ”No!”

 ”Urkh.”

She shut him down before he could even finish the sentence. And of course, the one getting the death glare now is me. Look, if you want someone to blame, blame Mio-san. She’s the one who raised her to be like this!

”Well, usually a good nap fixes everything,” I said. “Suu-chan, do you want to take a nap?”

 ”Okay,” Suu-chan replied.

She agrees instantly. Mio-san doesn’t look like she’s going to help, so I call out to the man currently becoming one with the floorboards.

 ”Mitsuhisa-san, you should join us…”

”I don’t need your pity,” Mitsuhisa replied.

 …Well, fine then.

”Then maybe with Mom or Mio-san -“

”Actually, let’s nap! Suu-chan loves her Papa’s lullabies, right?!” Mitsuhisa shouted.

Mitsuhisa-san snaps upright like a spring. He’s got a look of terrifying determination on his face, but buddy, we’re just taking a nap. (Wait, did he just stand up without using his hands? Did I hallucinate that? Is that a “muscles” thing?) A suddenly chipper Mitsuhisa-san starts laying out the futons². I tried to help, but Suu-chan refused to let go, so I’m stuck. (Please stop looking at me like I stole your lunch.) Mitsuhisa-san takes the center spot on the futon and poses.

 ”Come to Papa, Suu-chan!”

Is it really okay for a grown man to strike a “s*xy” pose on a futon while saying that? He’s handsome enough to almost pull it off, but man, she’s your daughter. Suu-chan lets go of me, but only to try and shove Mitsuhisa-san out of the way.

 ”Mmph!”

”Hm? Oh, do you want to play with Papa after all -“

 ”Wrong.”

 ”…”

The higher the climb, the harder the fall. (Seriously, stop glaring at me.) After successfully banishing Mitsuhisa-san to the edge, I thought she’d take the middle, but she pats the spot and looks at me.

 ”Maa-kun, here.”

 ”Hooh…”

That “Hooh” was way too low and vibrated through the floor. Scary. But Suu-chan doesn’t care; she just flops down on the side opposite her dad. The order is now Mitsuhisa-san, me, and then Suu-chan.

 ”Makoto…”

 ”Yes?”

 ”Trade -“

 ”Bad!” Suu-chan shouted.

Suu-chan vetoes it before I can even open my mouth. I thought he’d give up, but Mitsuhisa-san uses his massive frame to literally vault over both of us, trying to sandwich Suu-chan in the middle. But like father, like daughter – Suu-chan immediately scrambles over me to the other side. I’m still in the middle. They just swapped sides.

They did this about ten more times – just bunny-hopping over me in a loop. Eventually, they both ran out of steam and finally settled down. I’ve been up since the crack of dawn, so I was already hitting my limit, but it’s hard to sleep when people are using you as a hurdle.

 ”Mfuuu…”

Suu-chan is fast asleep, clinging to my arm. She has the face of an angel. It’s like the grumpiness never even happened. And in the end, the lullaby never happened. I mean, after that workout, who wouldn’t be out cold? I’m at my limit too. Time to clock out. Goodnight.

”I’ll get my revenge for this in our next game…”

As I felt a towel-ket³ being draped over me, I could have sworn I heard a very ominous promise.

 Summary:

Following the Totsuka family’s return from a trip, Suu-chan is in a terrible mood due to missing Makoto and oversleeping. She clings to Makoto while rejecting her father, Mitsuhisa, leading to a comedic battle for position on the nap futon. Eventually, the exhaustion of their ‘bunny-hopping’ over Makoto puts them all to sleep.

 —

 Trivia:

 - Suu-chan was sobbing so hard she was hyperventilating earlier in the day.

 - Mitsuhisa apparently stood up from a prone position without using his hands, hinting at his athletic ability.

 - The term ‘Heimadoka’ in the raw is a pun on peace/calm and the character’s state.

 - Mio and Makoto’s mother are filming the entire domestic comedy

 —

 Character Insight:

Mitsuhisa’s competitive nature even extends to his daughter’s affection, showing his doting but slightly immature side. Suu-chan shows her deep attachment to Makoto, viewing him as her primary source of comfort.

 —

 Behind the Scenes:

The chapter title ‘An Angel’s Sleeping Face’ contrasts with the chaotic physical comedy of the ‘nap battle’ that precedes the quiet ending.
