Volume 4 Chapter 42 The Eldest Daughter of the Momose Family
Edited by: Kanaa-senpai
After leaving Mother’s family home, we traveled on foot to Mio-san’s family home. “I’m with Maa-kun♪”
”We’re together, aren’t we~”
”Mm♪”
Usually, her trips home involve a lot of sulking, but today she seemed to be in an exceptionally good mood because I was coming along. While it didn’t seem like she had a particular aversion to Mio-san’s side of the family, her usual behavior made me worry about how things normally went. As for me, I wasn’t exactly nervous about greeting Suu-chan’s grandparents.
It was true that this was my first time going to Mio-san’s house, but it wasn’t my first time meeting Suu-chan’s grandparents. Her grandmother-Grandmother Haruko-had been a huge help during Mio-san’s pregnancy, doing things like picking us up from the kindergarten bus. Her grandfather-his name was Shuzo-san-had also come to visit us a few times, so in terms of pure frequency, I had met them more often than my own grandparents.
With that in mind, we walked for just under three minutes through the blazing sunlight without any particular tension. The house was an elegant two-story building with a white theme. While it would be harsh to compare it to the Yoshikura estate, it was a fairly large residence. There was a magnificent kitchen garden in the yard, where I could see cherry tomatoes, eggplants, bell peppers, and okra at a glance… Apparently, all the vegetables Suu-chan wasn’t very fond of were growing there.
”Welcome, everyone.”
”I’m home~”
”Ma~”
”Welcome back. Akari-chan, make yourself at home.”
”Thank you very much.”
”Excuse me for the intrusion.”
”Oh, also, this is from my mother.”
”Oh, thank you so much~. I’ll have to thank her later.”
”Ooh, Fuuka and Kyoka have grown so much too~”
”Look, it’s Grandfather~”
”It’s wittle Grandfather~”
”Wada!”
”Ia!”
Opening the front door, we were greeted by Grandmother Haruko and Shuzo-san. “Maa-kun, this way. I’ll show you.”
”Ah, yeah…”
As soon as we finished taking off and lining up our shoes, Suu-chan grabbed my hand to guide me through the house. (Is this really okay, though? Leaving the grandparents you haven’t seen in a while and just wandering around the house as children…)
”Come to the living room when you’re done~”
”Mm! Maa-kun, let’s go.”
”…Aye-aye, sir.”
Despite my worries, Mio-san gave us her permission to explore. Led by an enthusiastic Suu-chan, I was first taken to the washroom for hand-washing and gargling. She was quite diligent about that sort of thing. From there, I was dragged through the bathroom, the toilet, the Western-style guest room, and the Japanese-style guest room. We climbed the stairs to see the veranda, the storage closet, and two storage rooms filled with memories. When it came to the grandparents’ room and Mio-san’s older sister’s room, she said, “You can’t go in here without permission,” and we bypassed their doors.
The interior, like the exterior, was unified in white, creating a clean and refined atmosphere. It felt quite brand new for a place where Mio-san had spent her childhood; perhaps it had been recently renovated. Having finished our tour, we finally headed to the living room, which we had saved for last.
There, Mother and the other women were gathered around the souvenirs (madeleines) from my grandparents, chatting away. In that circle sat a woman I was meeting for the first time. She had a short haircut that showed off the nape of her beautiful neck and translucent skin that defied her age. Combining elegance with a certain bewitching charm, she was the kind of woman who would make ten out of ten men stop and turn their heads.

Yeah, she was a beauty with an incredible amount of adult poise and s*x appeal. Even though I was used to seeing Mother and Mio-san, I found myself getting a little flustered. A blunder on my part. In all likelihood, this was Mio-san’s older sister-Miya-san. Her features resembled Mio-san’s.
”Ah, they’re back.” Noticing us, Mio-san beckoned us over. “Muoh… Suu-chan brought a man home…” Seeing Suu-chan and me naturally holding hands as if it were the most obvious thing in the world, Miya-san choked on her madeleine. (What is this? I’m picking up a strangely ‘unfortunate’ vibe from her… maybe I just projected an image onto her because her looks are so top-tier.)
”Hehe, Big Sis. You lost out to your niece, not just your little sister~”
”Shut up! You’ve got some nerve for a little sister! I’ll fix that mouth of yours!”
”I’h hur’s! Big ‘is!”
”Mama has a funny face.”
”Fuu-chan, ‘top her!”
Mio-san laughed and teased her with a “ni-shi-shi” grin, and naturally, she was met with a counterattack. (Yeah, this is nice. Seeing beautiful sisters frolic is a treat for the eyes.)
Incidentally, I heard Mio-san also has an older brother named Takumi-san. The order is Miya-san, then Takumi-san, then Mio-san. Takumi-san wasn’t here. From what I heard, he was living a “life on the run” abroad. It sounded dangerous, but it wasn’t like he was involved in a crime. Apparently, he was doing well and staying in a place called Alice Springs. He had sent complaints to Shuzo-san and Mitsuhisa-san about the mornings and evenings being freezing cold. He’s probably in the Southern Hemisphere… but where is that?
”Look, Big Sis. Maa-kun is gonna hate you. Act like an auntie.” I couldn’t quite understand what Mio-san was saying through her squished face, but as expected of sisters, Miya-san understood her perfectly. She gave Mio-san’s butt one last slap, straightened her posture, and met my gaze. “Ahem… Nice to meet you. I’m Miya, Mio’s older sister. Nice to meet you, Maa-kun.”
”…Nice to meet you.”
Miya-san underwent a complete transformation, putting on the air of a dignified and kind older sister. It suited her perfectly, but after seeing what happened just a moment ago… Still, she was the older sister of Mio-san, who had been a great help to us, and a relative of Suu-chan. I gave a polite bow to ensure I wasn’t being rude. “……”
”……”
A captivating, scrutinizing gaze from Miya-san clashed with my usual listless stare. From the outside, it probably looked like we were staring into each other’s eyes. “…What are these two doing?” Mio-san asked, tilting her head. (Honestly, I just felt like whoever looked away first would lose.)
”…A staring contest?”
”Can she even win against Maa-kun?”
”Probably impossible, right?”
I often had staring contests with my family, and I hadn’t lost since the day I was born. If she could make my facial muscles move, she’d be something special. (Not that I’m actually intending to have a staring contest, though.)
”Muu, Maa-kun. Play with me.” Losing her patience with our seemingly endless staring, Suu-chan grabbed my head with both hands and forcibly reclaimed my gaze for herself. She then snorted with satisfaction.
”-Hmm, boys are nice too. Makes me want a child of my own.” (So that’s what she was thinking while staring at me.)
”Big Sis, you need to find a husband before that~”
”It’s true. When will our eldest daughter ever…”
”Nah, there just aren’t any good men out there.”
”That’s because Miya-san’s ideals are too high.”
”Big Sis, men are things you have to raise yourself.”
They were getting noisy. When you get four women together, it gets even louder. Mitsuhisa-san and Shuzo-san, who had presumably been “raised” that way, seemed to share a mutual understanding; they huddled together as men, spending precious time with the daughters who hadn’t been “dyed” yet.
Still, for Miya-san to not even have a boyfriend, let alone be married… as the eldest daughter of the Momose family, she surely had the manners of a lady, and her appearance was outstanding. It was surprising, as she must be popular. (Maybe she’s such a ‘flower on a high peak’ that men are too intimidated to approach, or maybe there’s something genuinely unfortunate about her…)
”Even if you say that, the only guys who approach me are full of neither dreams nor hope. And my workplace is nothing but girls.”
”…What do you do for work?”
”あら~, are you interested? I’ll buy you a toy if you guess right. Suu-chan, keep it a secret, okay?”
Miya-san blew an alluring wink at me. (I don’t need a toy, but let’s think about it for a second.) She seemed to live here at the family home… surely she wasn’t a NEET. She did mention a “workplace.” Since she could casually offer to buy a toy, she must be making a decent living. (Maybe she’s the CEO of some company? If she’s single and living at home, that wouldn’t be hard.) She clearly cared about her appearance, so that seemed like a strong lead… but unfortunately, I didn’t have much knowledge in that area. I was stumped. (In a way, Miya-san seems like she’d be good at hiding things-she’s mysterious.)
”…A model?”
”Oh, Maa-kun knows how to handle women even at this age~. Are you hitting on me?” (I’m not hitting on you. I wish she’d stop saying weird things. Look, Suu-chan is… wait, what?) Usually, she’d have her cheeks puffed out, but she was just sitting next to me, happily stuffing her face with a madeleine. She tilted her head-she was cute.
”Then, are you a NEET?”
”Pffft…“
”…Does Maa-kun want to bully me? Are you the type who bullies the girl he likes? You sure know some big words like ‘NEET’ dont you?” Mother and the others burst out laughing. I couldn’t tell if Miya-san was angry or impressed. (I’m an innocent child right now, so it can’t be helped. Just please don’t poke and prod my soft cheeks that Mother is so proud of.)
”Miya-sis is actually the director of a hospital, you know? Well, a beauty clinic, to be precise. She’s the person in charge.”
(…She was actually a really impressive person. My deepest apologies.)
”…So that’s why Miya-sis is so beautiful?”
”Maa-kun is really good at handling women. Sis is going to worry about your future.”
(Not really. Flattery skills are essential to getting by in society. Calling her beautiful wasn’t flattery, though; I just know better than to call a woman ‘auntie.’)
”Muu, Miya-sis is being unfair, hogging Maa-kun all to herself.”
”Then Suu-chan can get prodded too~. And then we’ll nuzzle~”
”Fugo…”
”~♪”
”Ah~, both of you are so cute. Why don’t you become my children?”
”ssu is Mama’s daughter.”
”…I’m also Mom’s son.”
I see. Miya-san is just someone who is naturally very touchy-feely with people. The reason Suu-chan wasn’t flying into a jealous rage might be because she saw that Miya-san viewed me as a child, not as a member of the opposite s*x. (I wonder if a five-year-old can make that distinction, but girls are quick to pick up on those things and have sharp instincts.)
”Hey, Akari, we’re both single, so why don’t we just get married… well, we can’t do that, but why don’t we just move in together? Then Maa-kun would be my son, and since Maa-kun is going to marry Suu-chan, she’d be my daughter too. Plus, I could flirt with you, Akari. Isn’t that perfect?”
”I’ll… have to pass on that…”
”Eeeh, why not! It’ll be fine. I think women being together is fun too, you know?”
(Wait, is Miya-san actually someone whose romantic interest is other women…?)
