Volume 7 Chapter 17 Reformation
Edited by: Kanaa-senpai
”A toast to our safe arrival,” I said, raising my mug. “Tomorrow, the real investigation begins in earnest.”
”Yeah,” Cassandra replied.
She was as blunt as ever, but she at least clinked her mug against mine. I took it as a step in the right direction. I had ordered a few cheese-heavy dishes I suspected she’d like, and I hit the bullseye. She mentioned that cheese was a bit of a luxury back in the Royal Capital; as she ate, she actually seemed to be in a slightly better mood.
”Whoa! If it isn’t Daisuke-chi!”
”Huh? Kazuya? It’s been a minute, man,” I said.
While I was eating with Cassandra, a voice called out to me. It was Kazuya, a Fantasy Summoner¹ and a former member of the Leemans. I hadn’t seen him in two months—not since the day “she” was first summoned.
He’d sent me a letter shortly after, saying he was heading out on a journey. Kazuya shouldn’t have had the MP pool to keep her manifested permanently yet, but there she was, standing right beside him. I guess he just wanted to spend as much time with her as possible. Since we were all in the same spot, I invited them to join us.
”Cheers,” I said as they sat. “I thought you were out on the road?”
”Cheers, yo! We heard the rumors about this lake while we were sightseeing,” Kazuya replied. “Apparently, there are Water Dragons and Great Water Spirits around here, though I’m not really into the whole monster-hunting thing.”
He explained that the lake reminded him of a legendary location associated with “her.” Since it wasn’t the actual place, it was more like a budget fan pilgrimage. While the Water Dragon lived further out, a Great Water Spirit was rumored to be in the lake itself.
The spirits Sylvie contracted with were “Middle Spirits” accessible at Spirit Magic Level 6, but a “Great Spirit” was a step above that, requiring Level 7. (Since I don’t have a lick of Spirit Magic skill, it doesn’t really affect me anyway.)
”So, what are you calling ‘her’ anyway? Still going with ‘Saber’?” I asked.
”That’s not bad, but I tweaked it a bit. I call her ‘Tria’ now-ssu,” Kazuya replied.
”Indeed,” Tria added. “I wouldn’t have minded the original name, but Kazuya-san insisted it wasn’t ‘cute’ enough.”
”Heh, look at you two. Getting along famously,” I teased.
”I am honored by your assessment,” Tria replied.
”Aw, stop it, man! It’s not like that-ssu!” Kazuya replied. Despite his denial, his face was a total mess of hopeless-romantic energy. Tria’s reaction wasn’t bad, either. He must have had a specific “lover” archetype in mind when he summoned her.
”By the way, Daisuke-chi, who’s the lovely lady-ssu?” Kazuya asked.
”Oh, this is Cassandra. She’s with the Royal Knights’ Order. We’re traveling together for… reasons. Cassandra, this is Kazuya. He was in my old unit,” I said.
”…Cassandra,” she grunted.
”I’m Kazuya! Since I split with Daisuke-chi’s crew, I’ve been traveling the world with Tria-ssu,” Kazuya replied.
”I am Tria,” she said. “I was given life in this world through Kazuya’s summoning.”
”Given life through a summons? Is she… not human?” Cassandra asked.
Cassandra, who had a notorious chip on her shoulder regarding adventurers, gave Kazuya a brusque greeting. He was too bubbly to care, but most people would have taken it as an insult. Since Cassandra was in the dark about his abilities, she looked at Tria with genuine surprise.
”Kazuya is a Fantasy Summoner,” I explained. “He summons characters he liked from stories back in our old world.”
”That’s the gist of it–su,” Kazuya replied. “My goal was to live my life with Tria, so I’ve basically already won the game.”
While Fantasy Summoners exist in this world, they usually focus on taming monsters. It’s a versatile “all-rounder” class that can fill any slot from vanguard to rearguard or healer, but the trade-off is the summoner’s own pathetic combat stats. Back in our Leemans days, Makoto the Blacksmith was our tank and I was the dedicated healer, so Kazuya usually acted as our main attacker, though he’d occasionally sub in as a backup tank.
”…I see,” Cassandra muttered.
”Man, she is the definition of a ‘Cool Beauty,’ isn’t she?” Kazuya asked.
Cassandra wasn’t quite as harsh toward other women, so she just seemed uninterested rather than hostile. Or maybe she’d just tuned him out.
”Tell me about it,” I sighed. “I’m having a hell of a time getting her to open up.”
”Well, you’ve got ‘that skill’ to deal with, Daisuke-chi. Must be rough,” Kazuya replied.
”Yeah. If I didn’t have ‘that,’ things might be a little smoother…” I replied.
”That skill?” Cassandra asked.
(Wait, did she not know about the Ordeal²? No, I’m sure I told her—she probably just forgot. She forgot my physical age from my previous life, too. It’s a recurring theme with her.)
”It’s a unique skill tied to my Class,” I explained. “It has a passive effect that makes it incredibly difficult for the opposite s*x to feel any affinity for me.”
”What? Such a skill exists?” Cassandra asked.
”Wait, didn’t Captain Emily tell you?” I asked.
”Now that you mention it… I feel like she might have said something…” Cassandra replied.
”Haha, typical. The fact that you can’t stand me is likely just the skill doing its job,” I said.
”Hmph…” Cassandra muttered. She looked a bit shaken, though she tried to hide it by gulping down her drink. I’d been watching her for days; I could see the gears turning. She fell into a brooding silence. I looked at Tria—she was a woman, but since she was technically a summoning skill, I wondered if the Ordeal applied to her too.
”Tria, how do you feel about him?” Kazuya asked.
”…I cannot say. I certainly feel nothing for him beyond ‘Kazuya’s friend,’ but we have barely spoken,” Tria replied.
”Figures,” Kazuya replied.
”Yeah,” I agreed. You can’t exactly test a “lack of affinity” in a five-minute conversation. Besides, I already have four lovers; I don’t exactly need to be recruiting more.
”You seem to be doing well, Kazuya,” I said.
”Mostly. My biggest headache is that I can’t keep Tria materialized twenty-four-seven. My MP just can’t handle the drain,” Kazuya replied.
”I see… well, that’s actually perfect timing. Kazuya, I’ve got a surplus of MP Potions in my inventory. Why don’t you take them off my hands?” I asked.
”Are you sure?” Kazuya replied.
I used them occasionally, sure, but with my MP Recovery Speed boost, I almost never hit zero. Having a few for emergencies was plenty; the rest were just gathering dust in my Item Box.
”Yeah. I rarely touch them these days. You need them more than I do,” I said.
”Man, I really appreciate it. But I can’t just take them for free. Let me give you something in return,” Kazuya replied.
”Don’t worry about it—” I started.
”No way. Good friends keep good accounts. It’s the right way to do things,” Kazuya replied.
”Alright, alright. In that case…” I thought about it. I didn’t really need items, but extra muscle for the upcoming quest sounded good. “Starting tomorrow, I’m supposed to investigate and cull the Water Elements around the lake for a few days. Why don’t you guys tag along? If we can clear the area faster, we can wrap this up early.”
”You got it! We were heading to the lake anyway,” Kazuya replied.
”Cassandra, you’re okay with Kazuya joining as a temporary party member, right?” I asked.
”I don’t care… but the reward stays the same,” Cassandra replied.
”I know, I know,” I said. And just like that, the Leemans were partially reformed. I was actually looking forward to it.
”Daisuke-sama, there you are,” a voice said.
”Oh, Meta. Where are the others?” I asked.
”They’re in the inn’s dining hall. I was hoping I could at least have dinner with you, if that’s alright?” Meta asked.
”Of course. Pull up a chair,” I replied.
”Thank you ♡” Meta said.
Meta had gone out of her way to find me. She had the air of a sophisticated, mature woman, but she had this incredibly charming, vulnerable side. She sat on my other side—the opposite of Cassandra—and pressed her body right against mine. The contrast was hilarious. The feel of her soft, curvy frame against my arm was a welcome distraction.
”Daisuke-chi… who is this lovely lady?” Kazuya asked.
”This is Meta. She’s my lover,” I said.
”Wait, FOR REAL?!” Kazuya asked.
”Yes,” Meta added. “As of just the other day, I have been granted the honor of being Daisuke-sama’s lover.”
Kazuya looked like he’d seen a ghost. Just like Makoto and Mercedes, he assumed the Ordeal made romance an impossibility for me. I introduced Kazuya to Meta; she was polite, but she clearly didn’t have much interest in him.
”And for the record,” I added, “the three girls from the Gale Party—the ones who taught me the ropes—are also my lovers, too.”
”Pffft! A Harem! Daisuke-chi is actually building a harem! Ahahahaha! Cough, hack!” Kazuya asked, slamming his hand on the table in a fit of laughter until he started to choke.
”Kazuya! Are you okay?” Tria asked, rubbing his back.
”Is it really that funny?” I asked.
”Man, it’s just… the guy who should be the least likely to have a harem is the one actually doing it! It’s too much!” Kazuya replied.
I mean, he wasn’t wrong. But any of the other guys could do it too if they put in the effort—they’re all B-Rank adventurers. Kazuya could probably pull it off if he increased his Skill Level and summoned more characters.
”Kazuya-san,” Meta asked, “you used to be in a party with Daisuke-sama, right? What was he like back then?”
”Oh, he started out as a bit of a jack-of-all-trades,” Kazuya replied. “But by the end, he was a perfect all-rounder. Never broke a sweat. He was a great leader, too—kept our heads on straight.”
”Oh my ♡ As expected of my Daisuke-sama ♡” Meta said.
”He’s exaggerating,” I mumbled. I didn’t think I did anything special, but Kazuya was definitely trying to make me look good. Meta hadn’t heard much about my time with the Leemans, so she spent the rest of the night peppering him with questions.
”Kazuya-san, thank you. I feel like I understand Daisuke-sama even better now ♡” Meta said.
”Don’t mention it. Man, you really are lucky, Daisuke-chi,” Kazuya replied.
”I know I am. Alright, tomorrow is the big day. Let’s head back to the inn and get some rest,” I said.
”Roger that!” Kazuya replied.
”Yes,” Tria said.
”Yes ♡” Meta said.
”…Fine,” Cassandra muttered.
Hearing the old stories seemed to satisfy Meta. Tomorrow the real work began, and I needed to be fresh. (Of course, I still had my night attendance with Cassandra to worry about.) As we were leaving, I noticed a few knights peeking into the tavern. The moment they spotted Cassandra, they bolted. Man, she really is feared by her own people. She’s such a sweetheart, too.
* * *
Back at the inn, Meta headed to her party’s room. She was a little tipsy, so we settled for a quick hug and a kiss. The weight of her chest and the soft press of her body were incredible. I felt a bit bad about not spending the night with her, but I’d make it up to her later. She seemed happy enough with the kiss, at least.
After that, it was time for a wash with Cassandra. Most inns don’t have showers, just a well outside where you douse yourself in cold water. But with my magic, I can rig up a warm shower. Cassandra tried to decline, but I insisted—mostly because I had plans for later. After two nights together, her resistance was starting to crumble.
”Cassandra, how’s the temperature?” I asked.
”…It’s fine,” she replied.
I decided to wash her. Since we were technically outside, I stuck to her hair and avoided any wandering hands. I used a custom shampoo I’d whipped up with Alchemy and started lathering her short, chestnut hair. I worked the suds into a thick foam, massaging her scalp with my fingertips.
”Any itchy spots?” I asked.
”…Don’t worry about it,” she replied.
(Man, she’s a tough nut to crack. The Ordeal is one thing, but her natural guard is like a fortress. I wonder if I can break through in the next few days? I might have to rely on physical persuasion after all.) I rinsed the suds away and applied some conditioner. Once we finished washing up, I dried her hair with a bit of wind magic.
”Not too hot?” I asked.
”…No,” she replied.
Her voice was flat, but she didn’t seem as tense as usual. Maybe I’m making progress.
”There. Your hair looks even better now,” I said.
”You’re doing too much…” Cassandra muttered. She couldn’t stop herself from running her fingers through her now silky-smooth hair; she clearly liked the result. She was already a beauty, but the extra shine really brought it out.
”Let’s head back to the room,” I said.
”Yeah,” she replied.
I led her back. (Now… what should we play tonight?)”

- Cassandra is feared by her own subordinates in the Knights’ Order.
- The location is near a lake known for high-level Water Spirits and Dragons
—
Character Insight:
Kazuya shows growth as he is now a solo traveler focused on his companion’s materialization, while Cassandra shows a tiny crack in her armor as she enjoys the hair-washing service.

Lore And Worldbuilding Context:
The author notes that Tria’s tone was corrected in this version and Sylvie’s skill levels were adjusted for consistency.
