Aki handed the photos back to Himejima Akeno, his expression clouded with doubt. “Akeno-senpai, how did these end up in your hands? And why is it that we have to wait for the President to return before we can settle this?”
Himejima Akeno took the photos back. A bloom of deep blue flame erupted from her palm, instantly incinerating the envelope and its contents. Aside from a few wisps of white smoke curling into the air, there was no scent and no ash left behind. By the time the flames flickered out, the photos had vanished from the world, leaving not a single trace.

Himejima Akeno seemed to read his mind. “Don’t get any ideas. You aren’t ready to learn this Magic¹ yet,” she said.
”Then when will I be?” Aki asked.
”You’ll need the strength of at least a Mid-Rank Mage before you can even begin to master Azure Flame²,” Akeno replied.
”Azure Flame…” Aki muttered. The name was as impressive as the utility. “By the way, Akeno-senpai, Basic Mana Extraction³ isn’t doing anything for me anymore. Does that mean I’ve officially hit the Mid-Rank Mage level?”
”The Mana in your body is already saturated?” Akeno looked at him with genuine shock. “You’ve only been practicing for… what, less than a month?”
”Seventeen days, to be exact,” Aki said.
Akeno walked over and placed her hand against his forehead. Aki instinctively tensed as he felt the delicate, cool softness of her palm, but he slowly forced himself to relax. Her eyes narrowed slightly, her lips curling into a faint, unreadable arc.
For a moment, Aki stared at her cherry-blossom lips—so close he could almost reach them—and felt a sudden, impulsive urge to lean in. Just as the tension peaked, she pulled her hand away.
”Mmh, it’s saturated alright. You’re ready for the next stage of cultivation,” Akeno said, her voice full of wonder. “Even for me, I think it took over twenty days to reach this point.”
She was a Fallen Angel by blood, born with Mana and trained since she could first read. Even with that head start, it had taken her nearly three weeks to master Basic Mana Extraction. “Your actual Magic mastery is nothing to write home about, so did you put all your talent points into raw cultivation?”
Aki just shrugged. Compared to the sheer absurdity of his Reincarnation, this was small fry. Akeno seemed to treat it as a curious quirk. She had sensed the Stray Devil lineage within him, but like Shinra Tsubaki, she wrote it off as a side effect of the Evil Pieces. Since the pieces hadn’t fully integrated, it made sense that his aura wouldn’t perfectly mirror the Gremory bloodline.
”The books for Intermediate Magic Power Extraction are at the Student Council. If you’re in a hurry, I can recite them for you now. With your talent, you’d probably pick it up instantly,” Akeno offered.
”I won’t bother you with that, Akeno-senpai. I’ll just head over to the Council office myself later,” Aki replied, flashing a grin. “Let’s get back to what we were actually talking about.”
He was half-joking; there was no way he’d let her teach him on the spot. Until he could “borrow” the Intermediate skill from someone else, he didn’t even plan on visiting the Student Council. His reputation as a “Magic Genius” was a useful shield, even if he only excelled at hoarding Mana.
”Fine. Let’s talk about the murder, then.” Akeno flicked his forehead with a slender finger. “Honestly, I didn’t think you had it in you. You look like such a clean-cut, quiet kid…”
Before Aki could respond, she continued to herself. “It’s my fault. I should have realized how bold you were when you were taking advantage of me earlier. I should have explained the rules sooner.”
Aki pouted internally. (If I actually acted like the clean-cut kid everyone thinks I am, I’d be six feet under by now.)
Since reaching B-rank strength, Aki had mostly dropped the “honest pushover” act—unless he was baiting someone into a trap. He wasn’t naturally timid. To avoid unnecessary hassle, he preferred to project enough strength to make people think twice. Usually, it worked; thugs left him alone, and he didn’t get harassed by older women.
But as soon as a pretty girl was in the picture, the delinquents and the “hero” types came out of the woodwork like hyenas catching the scent of blood, their eyes glowing green as they looked for trouble.
Aki listened intently as Akeno explained the geopolitical reality of the Three Realms. He realized why she had said telling her sooner would have made this easy. There was no “pacifist” rule for supernaturals. If provoked by a human, a supernatural had the right to kill them—though they’d face administrative penalties. However, if the killing was premeditated for personal gain, the punishment ranged from life in prison to execution.
Since Aki was a student at Kuoh Academy, he fell outside human jurisdiction. His fate was in the hands of the Gremory family, not the local police. The “trouble” was simply that Rias Gremory was in the Underworld, leaving Akeno to manage the fallout of a system built on ancient compromises.
Humans were technically the masters of the Human Realm, a status quo that kept the Three Realms stable. If the Gods or Devils wiped out humanity, the whole world would collapse. This “bottom line” kept the peace, even if human heroes were the only ones capable of occasionally bruising a Demon King’s ego. Human potential was explosive, which was exactly why the other realms worked so hard to keep them suppressed.
Now, Aki’s actions had rippled through that delicate web of control. As a Reincarnated being under the Gremory banner, his mess was their mess, and in a town like Kuoh, every supernatural disturbance was a political landmine.
