Chapter 67 The Incident
Edited by: Kanaa-senpai
Aki never in a million years imagined that Miyajima Sakura, who usually carried herself with such a fierce and heroic grace, would be so emotionally fragile when it came to love. It wasn’t necessarily a bad thing, but it was definitely a headache. After agonizing over his options for a moment, Aki realized he had to play the role of the comforter.
”Miyajima-senpai, I didn’t mean to deceive you,” Aki said. “I thought I was just playing a harmless joke. I never thought you’d…”
Miyajima Sakura wiped a stray tear from her eye, her voice trembling as she fought back a sense of deep betrayal. “I’m not an idiot,” she sobbed. “It’s my own fault. Before… I just…” Her voice trailed off, and she looked like she was about to break down into a full-on wail again.
”Okay, okay, no more crying.” Aki pulled her into a hug, leaning close to her ear and lowering his voice to a whisper. “You might be in some serious danger lately. I only tracked you down here because I was worried about you.”
Sakura stopped sobbing instantly, narrowing her eyes at Aki with pure suspicion. She suspected the player was just trying to distract her, but looking at his face, he didn’t seem to be faking it. “What kind of danger?”
”I can’t tell you exactly what it is just yet.” Aki paused. Seeing her “you’ve got to be kidding me” expression, he quickly added, “Look, after school. I’ll wait for you at the gate. We’ll go to your place together and I’ll explain everything clearly in front of your parents.”
Miyajima Sakura finally stopped her tears, though she remained skeptical as she shoved herself out of Aki’s arms. “Fine. If you’re telling the truth, then I’ll let it slide that you just copped a feel.”
”Well, that’s not really—” Aki started, then stopped himself. (Actually, forget it. I finally managed to calm her down; the last thing I need to do is kick the hornet’s nest again.) Aki watched the words die in his throat. “Uh… deal.”
”Hmph!” Sakura stomped her foot and marched away in a huff.
(If I hadn’t detected a Talent¹ in her, I might have let it go. But now that I know she has one, whether we’re ‘even’ isn’t really up to her anymore,) Aki thought as he watched her slender figure disappear into the distance.

After parting ways with Miyajima Sakura, Aki headed back toward Kuoh Academy. Sitting through regular classes was basically optional as far as he was concerned. He might not have been a genius in his past life, but his grades were decent enough that he could coast through ordinary high school material. Plus, now that he was part of the Hidden Academy², academic expectations were on the floor. As long as you had the raw power, you could waltz into Kuoh’s university division whenever you felt like it.
The only real catch was that long-term truancy could still get you expelled. Usually, Rias and the others played the part of diligent students during the day and handled their Contracts³ at night. Anything particularly messy was saved for the holidays. If he wanted to spend his school hours out in the field, his best bet was getting Rias’s seal of approval to use a mission as his alibi—that was the only way to keep the school board off his back.
Aki was still brainstorming how to pitch the idea to Rias when Koneko suddenly appeared in his classroom. Without a word, she grabbed him by the collar and started hauling him toward the exit.
”Whoa, hey! Koneko… easy on the threads!” Aki complained, his face turning sour as the rest of the class started pointing and whispering. He tried to pull away, but the white-haired loli’s grip was like iron. Fearing he’d shred his only uniform, he had to stoop low and shuffle along with her. (It’s just half a day of hooky, surely it’s not worth a public execution.)
”No,” Koneko said, her face a mask of indifference. “Akeno-senpai’s orders. I have to deliver you to her personally.”
Despite her tiny frame, the girl exuded a terrifying aura. Students in the hallway scrambled to the walls, giving her a wide berth as she dragged a very pathetic-looking Aki through the school. They were the center of attention until they finally reached the club building.
Aki didn’t need to be a mind reader to know what the rumors were saying. Everyone probably figured he was the kind of creep who would lay a hand on an innocent, doll-like girl like Koneko. Between the previous scandals and the fact that he was constantly seen with Hamazaki Reina, Shinra Tsubaki, and Himejima Akeno, the “scumbag” label was basically permanent.
The gossip mill had been busy; some people were even calling him “The Pretty Boy,” “The Carnivore,” “The Human Succubus,” or “The Fourth Member of the Pervert Trio.” Unfortunately for his haters, no matter how many nasty names they threw at him, there was still a long line of girls willing to have a “no-strings-attached” encounter with him. In their minds, being able to share a man with Shinra Tsubaki and Himejima Akeno was a weird point of pride.
”Koneko, you can let go now… I swear, I’m not gonna bolt.”
”No.”
Aki leaned down to her ear and whispered, “I’ll buy you ice cream after school.”
The white-haired loli stopped, gave him a flat look, and then continued walking. She didn’t let go, but she did switch her grip from his collar to his sleeve.
”Whew~” Aki exhaled, finally able to stand up straight and stretch his cramped muscles. “So, did Akeno-senpai say why she’s looking for me all of a sudden?”
”I don’t know,” Koneko muttered, glancing back at him. “I tried to find you this morning, but you were gone. Akeno-senpai’s face got… very scary after that.”
”Did someone come by to see her?”
”I don’t know.”
”Did she receive a package or something?”
”I don’t know.”
Aki’s lip twitched. “Is there anything you actually know?”
Koneko tilted her head and gave him a tiny nod. “I know you’re buying me ice cream later.”
Aki just sighed, rubbing his temples. He knew his “cheap master” was a bit of a space cadet, but he’d still managed to underestimate her. On the bright side, if it were a true life-or-death emergency, Akeno would have hunted him down herself rather than waiting for him to stroll back onto campus.
”We’re here.”
Koneko swung open the doors to the Occult Research Club and dragged Aki inside. “Akeno-senpai, objective secured.”
”Good work, Koneko. Thank you,” Himejima Akeno said, putting down a stack of photos she had been studying. “Go take a break. I need to have a private word with Aki alone.”
As she walked out, the white-haired loli silently mouthed the word ‘Ice cream’ at him. Aki rolled his eyes and gave her a dismissive wave, signaling that he’d keep his end of the bargain.
”So, Akeno-senpai… did something happen?” Aki asked, trying to sound casual. “Something to do with me, I’m guessing?”
Akeno shot him a look of pure exasperation. “Oh, so you do have a brain. You realize that if I hadn’t intercepted this, you wouldn’t be standing here right now, right?”
She pulled an envelope from her desk drawer and tossed several glossy, high-definition photographs onto the table. Aki picked them up and felt a cold pit form in his stomach. He slapped his forehead. (How the hell did I forget about the cameras?)
”That’s you in the photos, isn’t it?” Akeno said, her voice deceptively calm. “And you’re the one who killed those men. Why?”
”They swung first. The knife belonged to one of them.” There was no point in lying. Aki had known this might catch up to him eventually, though he’d expected a visit from the police, not his club senior.
”Fine. Let’s assume self-defense for a second,” Akeno replied, standing up and leaning over the desk, her eyes flashing. “The real question is: Why didn’t you tell me about this the second it happened?”
To her, the “why” of the murders was a footnote. The “why” of his silence was the part that actually hurt.
”I… I forgot.”
”You forgot?!” Akeno’s eyes went wide, and her voice spiked an octave.
Aki looked away sheepishly, scratching his cheek. “Yeah. I just… it slipped my mind.”
In his defense, after he’d dealt with those punks, he’d spent the entire night battling with Sakuramachi Touko, and then he was immediately obsessed with finding Miyajima Sakura. Once he got back, his mind was occupied with how to stop the threat brewing at Aisu Academy⁴. The dead bodies just hadn’t made the top of the priority list.
Akeno closed her eyes and slowly sank back into her chair, taking a deep breath. “So… you weren’t skipping class this morning because you were afraid of the police?”
”Uh… no. I just had some urgent business and didn’t have time to file for leave.” Aki looked at Akeno, his expression turning sincere. “Look, Akeno-senpai… I’m really sorry. I didn’t mean to make extra work for you.”
He didn’t know how she’d gotten the photos, but he knew one thing: he was still a free man because she’d made the problem go away. Apologizing was the least he could do.
”It wouldn’t have been ‘extra work’ if you’d just given me a heads-up,” Akeno replied, her gaze lingering on him with a mix of affection and frustration. “Now we just have to wait for the President to get back.”

Summary:
Aki consoles a fragile Miyajima Sakura after a ‘joke’ goes too far, sensing a dangerous ‘Talent’ within her. Upon returning to Kuoh Academy, he is forcibly escorted by Koneko to the Occult Research Club. There, Himejima Akeno reveals she has proof of his recent kills, and Aki admits he simply forgot to report it.
—
Trivia:
- Aki’s ‘Talent’ detection is the primary reason he is interested in Sakura, not just romance.
- The ‘Pervert Trio’ is a reference to the main characters of High School DxD (Issei and his friends).
- Aki’s past life experience makes high school academics trivial for him.
- Hidden Academy members have a different set of rules regarding school attendance if on missions.
- Akeno intercepted the photos before the police or school board saw them

Character Insight:
Aki’s sociopathic or detached nature is highlighted by the fact that he ‘forgot’ about committing multiple homicides because he was too busy with social/romantic drama. Akeno’s protective yet exasperated reaction shows her deepening investment in him as a pupil.

Lore And Worldbuilding Context:
The author blends dark urban fantasy tropes with high school comedy, where the protagonist’s casual attitude toward violence serves as a major character quirk.
