Watching Aki face off against the red-haired delinquent, Amano Yuuma smirked. A bizarre, twisted grin surfaced on her pure, delicate face—a look that didn’t match her innocent aura at all.
”I’m taking the girl behind me under my protection,” Aki said. He didn’t want to drag this out; he wanted to finish the job quickly and get away from this dangerous woman. He beckoned toward the cold-looking delinquent with a flick of his finger. “Group fight or one-on-one, I don’t care. If you’re a man, quit stalling.”
The red-haired delinquent looked at Amano Yuuma behind Aki. This woman had been the one to approach him, claiming that if he beat this “pretty boy” who looked like he’d be a hit with the ladies, she’d be his girlfriend.
Now, why did he feel like he was the villain in this scenario? This was a private deal Amano Yuuma had made with him; he figured even if he told the truth, nobody would believe him. Besides, looking at the woman’s expression, the delinquent didn’t think she had any intention of following through on her promise.
He was right. Amano Yuuma hadn’t given the promise a second thought. Regardless of who won or lost, she planned to find these thugs afterward to erase or rewrite their memories. She couldn’t care less if the delinquent spilled the beans.
The red-haired delinquent shoved his subordinates aside and spoke coldly. “It seems we were both played by that woman, but your attitude really pisses me off…”
Aki stood with his hands in his pockets, looking utterly bored. “Like I said, just get on with it. I’m just getting paid to do a job; everything else is none of my business.” He didn’t know what kind of reward Himejima Akeno received for taking this Contract¹—it probably wasn’t money—but the principle was the same.
The delinquent narrowed his eyes, casting a murderous gaze at Aki. He hated being interrupted more than anything. He decided to settle this pretty boy first, then go settle the score with the woman. Relying on his supernatural power, the delinquent looked down on both Aki and Amano Yuuma. He couldn’t sense the aura of “their kind” from either of them.
What he didn’t realize was that Aki and Amano Yuuma were leagues above him. Unless they intentionally leaked their power, he had zero chance of sensing them. It never even crossed his mind that someone strong enough to crush him would be bored enough to use him for entertainment.
Unfortunately for him, that was exactly the case. To Amano Yuuma, he was just a stepping stone. To Aki, he was just a chore. Even worse, Aki’s strength was much higher than Amano Yuuma had estimated.
The red-haired delinquent hit the Waterloo of his life.
The battle had barely begun, and before he could even manifest his prized fire magic, Aki closed the distance and unleashed a relentless beatdown. The delinquent tried to fight back—his body had been tempered by Mana and was far tougher than a normal human’s—but against Aki, it wasn’t nearly enough.
Aki didn’t even need to use Body Mastery. Relying purely on speed, power, and a bit of technique, he easily pounded the delinquent into unconsciousness. The delinquent’s “cool” face was frozen in a mask of existential doubt; even as he blacked out, he couldn’t grasp what had gone wrong.
”Boss!”
Seeing their leader taken down, the young thugs started screaming and rushed forward. A few of the more loyal ones charged Aki, shouting about revenge. Respecting their spirit, Aki gave each of them a single punch, sending them to sleep right alongside their boss. Thwack. Thud.
The remaining men glared but didn’t dare attack again. If they all got knocked out, who would carry their brothers to the hospital? Comforting themselves with those thoughts, they shouted the usual cliché threats while their bodies honestly helped their unconscious comrades up and scrambled toward the road.
Aki didn’t bother chasing them. He turned back to the “pure and lovely” high school girl. “Miss Amano, that should do it, right?”
”Thank you so much, Uesugi-kun! These people have been such a headache for me,” Amano Yuuma said, maintaining her “Disguise” while burying her shock deep inside. “To show my thanks, let me treat you to dinner, Uesugi-kun.”
”I’ll pass on the meal. I was just finishing a task for my senior,” Aki said with a smile. “Besides, I’m a Stray Devil, Miss Amano. Aren’t you scared at all?”
”Be… because… Uesugi-kun is so handsome, I just wanted to spend a little more time with you.” Amano Yuuma blushed, looking down at her shoes, playing the shy, innocent girl to perfection.
Aki was internally speechless. (Seriously, if you aren’t at the next Oscars, I’m not watching. What an actress.) “Is that so? Well, Miss Amano is very cute too.”
Amano Yuuma looked up, her large eyes filled with hope. “Then—”
”And that’s why I’m going home.” Aki turned around without a second thought, speaking with total mock-seriousness. “It would be bad if I actually got charmed by you, Miss Amano.”
Amano Yuuma watched his back with growing interest, following him with light steps. Aki’s level of caution was abnormal. The fight had been so fast that she’d only confirmed he was B-rank; she hadn’t gained any other intel. After a while, seeing that Aki truly had no intention of entertaining her, she stopped. She gave up on prying further.
As a Peerage member, Aki was already B-rank, meaning his Master was at least A-rank. An A-rank powerhouse was beyond what Amano Yuuma could handle alone unless she called in her superiors. Kuoh Town belonged to the Gremory family, but that didn’t mean they were the only players. She had other missions here; offending the Gremory Family over a bit of curiosity would jeopardize everything. It wasn’t worth the risk.
Once he sensed her aura finally vanish, Aki let out a long breath. Raynare’s appearance meant the gears of history were turning. If he didn’t find a solution soon, he’d have to give up on the Boosted Gear.
He couldn’t bring himself to use a secret technique to rip the Boosted Gear out of Hyoudou Issei after it awakened. That would mean killing the kid. A sacred gear² had a will of its own; whether it would even work for him after that was a gamble, and he wasn’t the type to murder an innocent.
Besides, he didn’t hate Hyoudou Issei. He actually kind of liked the guy’s blunt honesty. To put it simply: the kid was brainless, easy to trick, didn’t hold grudges, and was loyal to a fault. Killing someone like that was a hurdle Aki’s conscience couldn’t clear.
Furthermore, if Rias and the others found out, he’d be finished in this town. Everything he’d built would go up in flames. It wasn’t worth the risk for a weapon he might not even be able to use. Aki reminded himself that his real power was his Dual Cultivation³ ability. The Boosted Gear was just one of thirteen; his own ability was truly one-of-a-kind.

After the contract was done, the weekend arrived. The plan to replenish his Lightning Flash talent was shelved for now—Akeno’s attitude made it clear that wasn’t happening yet.
On Saturday, Aki went on a hot spring trip with Hamazaki Reina and the other three girls. Naturally, once they got there, it devolved into a full-blown orgy. The poor shop girl delivering food was left beet-red.
If she hadn’t run fast enough, the rowdy Kurumizaka Ruri would have probably dragged her down between Aki’s legs too. They followed that up with some hot spring play until all four women were so spent they couldn’t even keep their legs closed.
On Sunday, there was no rest either. Aki spent the day helping Miyajima Sakura and the Takamine sisters boost their strength. He also made sure to hit the Miyajima Dojo to keep refining his Kendo. He spent nearly the entire forty-eight hours buried in women. If it weren’t for his Dual Cultivation ability, even the strongest constitution would have been sucked dry.
By Monday, Aki was yawning as he joined the crowd in the massive indoor gym for the weekly morning assembly. Standing in the formation, he instinctively rubbed his lower back. He was genuinely sleep-deprived. His back didn’t actually hurt, but after all that “work” over the weekend, he felt like he could use a massage.
The assembly was the same old boring lecture. Aki lost interest after two sentences. If the person on stage weren’t Shitori Sona, he’d have probably closed his eyes right there. It was a new week, and Shitori Sona was finally showing her face. He wondered if Rias was back yet.
Aki glanced toward the second-year section. He didn’t see the signature fiery red hair, but his vision was suddenly blocked by a patch of pure black.
(Kuro? Why is this little thing here?)
He watched in surprise as the black Kuro sphere bobbed up and down in front of him, frantically pulsing information directly into his mind.
