Facing Kalawarner’s interrogation, the group of Youkai took a moment to think before nodding in unison.
Mittelt’s outfit and general vibe were far too distinctive to miss.
On top of that, she wasn’t exactly subtle about showing her true form as a Fallen Angel¹ during missions. If you’d seen her once, you weren’t likely to forget her.
”I saw her over by Mitsu Lake² around noon today,” one offered. “She looked like she was in the middle of a scrap with someone.”
”I spotted her on the west side of the woods,” another added, scratching his head. “Actually, she went out of her way to mess with me for a bit.”
”I saw her flying toward the peak,” a third piped up. “She was carrying a box and humming some little tune, like she didn’t have a care in the world.”
”I was at…”
As the Youkai babbled on, Aki felt his confusion mounting.
”Wait, wait. Hold on,” Aki interrupted, cutting through the noise. “Tell me when you saw her, exactly.”
A few minutes later, Aki had managed to piece together a rough timeline. It seemed Mittelt’s mission had been a success. Why she hadn’t headed back was the mystery—instead, she’d made a beeline straight for the summit of Mount Mitsu³.
Aki went quiet for a moment, then looked at the huddle of spirits. “Who’s the strongest entity in these mountains?” Aki asked.
”The strongest?” The Youkai traded nervous glances, none of them willing to speak up.
In truth, they were probably the big fish in this small pond, but they weren’t about to claim that title in front of the three monsters standing before them.
Aki caught the vibe and frowned, rephrasing the question. “Fine. Who’s the ruler here? Who’s in charge of managing Mount Mitsu?” Aki demanded.
The air grew heavy for a second before one of the bolder Youkai spoke up. “Mount Mitsu is a mess, honestly. People come and go constantly, and there aren’t enough resources here to fight over. There isn’t a ‘manager’ or a ‘ruler.’ It’s just… here.”
Aki’s lip twitched. (Right. I was overthinking it.)
”So there’s no one around here at A-rank or higher?” Aki asked.
”No,” the Youkai answered in perfect, terrified harmony.
”If anyone had that kind of power, why would they rot in a place like this?” the bold one added. “Once you hit A-rank, as long as you’re careful, you don’t have to worry about hunters. The human world is way more fun than some dusty old forest.”
Aki gave the guy a sidelong look. If they weren’t in a hurry, he might have actually enjoyed debating the ethics of Youkai society with them. If they knew the human world was so great, why did they bother committing crimes and becoming Stray Devils⁴?
As long as they didn’t go overboard, they could use their abilities to live a pretty comfortable life among humans.
He scanned the group again. None of them were on the current hit list. “I’m letting you go this time,” Aki said, his voice dropping to a cold, level tone. “But if I catch any of you in Kuoh Town, don’t say I didn’t warn you.”
To drive the point home, he flashed the Gremory Family Crest⁵ on the back of his hand. The sight of it sent a visible shiver through the Youkai, their knees practically knocking together.
They didn’t know Aki’s exact power level, but he was clearly the one in charge. He was stronger than the Fallen Angel who had just deleted a wolf demon like it was nothing. Furthermore, he was a direct operative for the Gremory family—the people who kept the peace in Kuoh. That was more than enough reason to run.
The spirits didn’t dare move until Aki and his companions had disappeared from sight.
With the local intel in hand, the trio felt a bit more grounded. They still didn’t know why Mittelt had gone dark, but at least it didn’t seem like she’d been hunted down.
They took to the air, following the path toward the summit. Aki kept his detection magic at full throttle, scanning the terrain until, just as they neared the peak, he hit a snag in the flow of Mana.
”Stop,” Aki said.
Aki touched down softly, his eyes locked on a patch of “static” in his perception. He approached the distortion cautiously.
A low, bone-deep hum resonated through the air. A sharp, vibrating drone rang in their ears, followed by a wave of nauseating vertigo. The pitch-black night of the mountain vanished, replaced instantly by a world of blinding, midday sun.
”Lady Raynare! Vana! Uesugi!”
Aki shook his head violently, trying to clear the spots from his eyes. Through the haze, a familiar, high-pitched voice reached him. It was bubbling with relief and excitement. “Milt…” Aki said, being the first to recover. “I figured you’d be here.” (The second I felt that spatial distortion, I knew she’d be right in the middle of it.)
”Yeah!” Mittelt nodded vigorously, her eyes sparkling. Then, she paused, looking confused. “Wait, what are you guys doing here?” Mittelt asked.
”Looking for a certain brat who was having so much fun she forgot she had a home to go back to,” Amano Yuuma (Raynare) growled. She rubbed her temples, glaring at the perfectly healthy, perfectly unharmed Mittelt.
Now that she knew the girl wasn’t dead, the worry was rapidly being replaced by pure irritation. “Milt, explain yourself. The mission is over. Why didn’t you come back? And why the hell aren’t you answering your radio?” Raynare demanded.
”Lady Raynare, it’s not that I didn’t want to come back! I literally couldn’t!” The blonde Fallen Angel, still decked out in her maid outfit, looked like she was about to burst into tears. “I finished the mission early and thought I’d take a quick walk around the peak before flying home. But the second I passed through here, it just… sucked me in. No matter how much I walk or how high I fly, I can’t get out!” Mittelt cried.
”Can’t get out?” Raynare echoed.
She looked around properly for the first time, realizing just how wrong everything was. They had been on a mountain in the middle of the night. Now, it was high noon, and the terrain looked nothing like the slopes they’d been climbing.
”What is this place?” Raynare asked. “Is it dangerous? What do you mean you can’t leave?” Raynare asked.
Mittelt blinked. “I… I don’t know where ‘here’ is. It’s not dangerous, I think. As for leaving… Lady Raynare, honestly, you should just try it. I don’t even know how to describe it,” Mittelt said.
Aki listened to them while testing the boundaries himself. He tried walking back the way they’d come, but the moment he crossed the three-hundred-meter mark, the world blurred. In a flash, he was standing right back where he’d started. He tried a different direction. Same result. He flew straight up. Same result.
He looked at the solid ground beneath his feet. (Even with my strength, digging a three-hundred-meter tunnel isn’t exactly a quick afternoon project.) He scrapped that idea.
After a bit more wandering and combining his findings with Mittelt’s experience, Aki realized the score. They were trapped inside a massive, invisible dome—a Large Barrier⁶ with a radius of about three hundred meters.
It was a one-way door; you could come in, but the moment you hit the edge, you were looped back to the center. Inside, the weather was perfect, the sun never set, and there wasn’t a threat in sight.
But there was also no food, no water, and the barrier acted as a total blackout zone for phone signals and Mana transmissions. That was why Mittelt couldn’t call for help.
Time passed—they weren’t sure how long, but long enough for everyone’s phones to die. Eventually, the four of them sat in a circle on the grass at the “spawn point” where they’d first appeared.
”So,” Aki said, propping his chin in his hand. “Should we just try to smash our way out?” Aki asked.
They’d tried the “smart” stuff. They’d looked for the center of the spell, searched for Mana nodes, and tried to find any logical inconsistency in the environment. Nothing. They couldn’t even get a solid read on what the barrier was actually made of.
