Chapter 118 Mittelt’s Disappearance

Edited by: Kanaa-senpai

Amano Yuuma’s snow-white chest heaved as she glared at Aki, her eyes flashing with indignation.

”Do you really think I’m that desperate for cash?!” she snapped.

”It’s not like I’m hurting for money either…” Aki replied, spreading his hands with a look of feigned innocence. “I just wanted to save myself the trouble. This tiny amount of money isn’t worth me burning a favor.”

 ”…”

After a long, tense silence, Amano Yuuma managed to rein in her agitation.

Despite being a manipulative, “black-bellied” Fallen Angel with a wicked streak, she was still a young woman at heart.

Women are naturally more sentimental than men; after countless sessions of their bodies and souls becoming one, she could claim it was “just a business transaction” all she wanted, but deep down, certain feelings had already begun to take root.

”Fine. It’s clear neither of us is going broke anytime soon.”

Amano Yuuma retracted the Wings from her back and slowly sat on the edge of the bed.

”Since that’s the case, remember that favor you promised? To do one thing within your power? Add a second one to the tab, and I’ll lend the items to you.”

 ”Deal,” Aki agreed without hesitation.

One favor or two didn’t make much of a difference to him, especially since the phrase “within your power” provided a massive amount of wiggle room.

”Wana, take him to the warehouse to get what he needs,” Raynare said.

 ”Yes, Lady Raynare,” Kalawarner replied.

Watching Aki and Kalawarner walk out side-by-side, Amano Yuuma gave a sharp huff and turned toward the bathroom.

She needed to wash the scent of that man off her skin, leaving nothing behind but the potent life force still humming within her lower abdomen.

* * *

By early October, the air had begun to take on a seasonal chill.

Standing in his own backyard, Aki wiped a bead of sweat from his forehead as he looked down at the ritual magic circle.

After more than half a month of constant practice, he had finally mastered the technique for stripping a Sacred Gear¹.

Since the Takamine Family home lacked a basement, he was forced to set everything up in the yard, cast under a low-level illusion magic to ensure the neighbors didn’t see anything that might give them a heart attack.

(All that’s left is to wait. Hopefully, I won’t actually have to resort to this method…)

Aki hadn’t just been practicing ritual arrays; his Cultivation hadn’t slowed down either.

By now, the Qi and Mana in his body had reached their absolute capacity—he was so full that he couldn’t cram in another sliver of energy if he tried.

Himejima Akeno’s Mana reserves were already legendary for someone of her rank—a true genius by any standard—but compared to Aki, who used Dual Cultivation² to constantly force his limits higher, she was still falling a bit short.

Though both were at the peak of A-rank, Aki’s Mana was effectively 1.5 times that of Himejima Akeno. But even for him, this was the ceiling.

Now, every time he engaged in Dual Cultivation, he gained virtually no benefit aside from a negligible increase in mental strength.

(Before the Boosted Gear makes its appearance, I have to find a way to Breach³ into S-rank.)

Aki was currently torn between researching high-level Magic Power Extraction to slowly grind his way to S-rank through sheer persistence, or finding a powerful opponent to fight—a “live or die” struggle to trigger his innate talent as a Combat-Oriented Type and force a Breach.

His internal debate was interrupted by the sudden ringing of his phone.

 ”Hey, Yuuma-chan. Good evening.”

Aki answered the call, his voice teasing. “Calling me this late… do you miss me already? We only just saw each other last night, you know~~”

”I need your help. Meet us at Mount Mitsu,” Amano Yuuma said, her voice uncharacteristically grim.

”If you handle this, I’ll count one of your favors as finished.”

Aki stared at the phone as the line went dead, clicking his tongue.

She hadn’t even explained the situation. What if it was outside his ability?

Whatever… he’d go check it out. If it wasn’t too much of a pain, he might as well settle the debt.

* * *

Mount Mitsu was located to the southwest of Kuoh Town; crossing its peaks meant leaving the town’s jurisdiction entirely.

Due to its isolated location, the mountain was virtually uninhabited, serving as a perfect corridor for Stray Devils to slip in and out of the area undetected.

Fifteen minutes later, Aki slowly descended from the sky, his thick Bat Wings flickering into a hazy mist before vanishing.

Following the coordinates on his phone, he reached the gathering point at the base of the mountain. Amano Yuuma and Kalawarner were already waiting.

”Yuuma-chan, what’s with the sudden summons?” Aki asked.

He scanned the surroundings, noticing that Mittelt wasn’t there in her usual maid uniform. “Is it just the two of you today? Where’s Lute?”

Since they started their sessions, the three Fallen Angels had always appeared as a trio.

Mittelt was usually the loudest and most energetic of the bunch; without her, the atmosphere felt strangely hollow.

”That’s exactly why I called you tonight,” Amano Yuuma said, speaking rapidly. “Mittelt has likely run into serious trouble inside Mount Mitsu.”

 ”What?!” Aki was genuinely shocked.

Mittelt had successfully managed to Breach into A-rank during last night’s Dual Cultivation.

Given her current strength, even if she encountered someone she couldn’t beat, she should have been more than capable of escaping.

”Let’s head into the woods,” Raynare said, cutting off any further questions. “We’ll explain the situation on the move.”

As they searched through the dense forest, Aki finally got the full story.

Mittelt had managed to Breach into A-rank just a step ahead of Kalawarner, and being the restless, hyperactive type, she had been itching to test her new power.

When a mission came down from the higher-ups early this morning to seize a specific item, she jumped at the chance to handle it solo.

The risk was supposed to be low, and they had all handled solo assignments before.

Combined with her new A-rank status, no one thought twice about her going alone.

But nearly twenty-four hours had passed, and Mittelt was still missing.

Raynare had tried to contact her repeatedly, but there had been no response.

Mittelt’s mission coordinates were right here in Mount Mitsu.

Raynare had intended to come alone, but while her own strength was significantly higher than the newly-ascended Mittelt, she was still firmly within the A-rank bracket.

To play it safe, she decided to call in Aki—who, despite being A-rank himself, had the combat output of five Raynares put together.

With Aki along, as long as they didn’t stumble upon an S-rank monster, the mission was guaranteed to be a success.

As for the chances of an S-rank being in Mount Mitsu… they were practically zero.

The destructive force of an S-rank attack was enough to level a small mountain.

If a Stray Devil of that caliber ever appeared in the Human World, the Hero Clan would descend on them instantly.

If they weren’t dealt with immediately, an entire city could be wiped off the map.

The sight of two Fallen Angels traveling with a Stray Devil was rare, and their presence quickly drew the attention of the various Stray Devils hiding in the shadows of the mountain.

A few Youkai, overconfident in their own strength, stepped out to block their path. “Hey! Hold it right there. This isn’t a place for tourists.”

”Move. I don’t have the patience to deal with you right now,” Raynare said.

She was visibly agitated; with Mittelt missing, she wasn’t about to waste a single second on these bottom-feeders.

”You arrogant bitch! How dare you talk to me like—ARGH!!”

He didn’t even get to finish his threat.

A streak of crimson light erupted, a blur of lethal speed that tore through the air and punched a hole straight through his chest.

With a final, agonizing scream, the B-rank Mixed-blood wolf demon collapsed.

The other Youkai stared in horror at the smoking hole in their leader’s torso.

Their bodies went rigid, and they collectively swallowed hard.

They had just kicked a jagged iron plate—and this one was covered in spikes.

”Do you have something else to say?” Raynare asked, her eyes icy.

If they kept pestering her, she’d happily spend the next few minutes slaughtering every last one of them.

Seeing that she wasn’t going to strike again immediately, the remaining bloodthirsty Youkai felt like they had just been granted a stay of execution.

”No! Not at all!” they stammered, shaking their heads like bobbleheads.

They scrambled to the side, practically tripping over themselves to get out of the way.

Amano Yuuma let the Light Spear in her hand dissolve, not even giving them a parting glance as she took to the air.

”Yuuma-chan, wait a second,” Aki interrupted. “Wandering around blindly will take forever. We should just ask the ‘locals’ for directions.”

Amano Yuuma and Kalawarner skidded to a halt.

Following Aki’s gaze, they turned back toward the group that had been trying to sneak away into the brush.

 ”Hm. Good point,” Raynare said.

Before the Youkai could take another step, four or five solid spears of Mana slammed down from the sky, pinning them in place.

Shh-chk!

The spears buried themselves deep into the earth, their shafts vibrating with residual power just inches away from the trembling Youkai.

”L-Lords… three great Lords… is there something you’re looking for?” one of the quicker-witted Youkai stammered. “I swear, I’ll tell you everything I know! I won’t hide a thing!”

The others quickly found their tongues as well, desperate to appease them. “Exactly! Whatever the Lords need, just say the word!”

Amano Yuuma and Kalawarner traded a quick look. Kalawarner stepped forward.

”Have any of you seen a blonde-haired Fallen Angel in a maid outfit today?”
