Volume 9 Chapter 19 Is There a Maid Among the Customers?
Edited by: Kanaa-senpai
After seeing Clarissa-san off, I ran into Mia on my way back—or rather, she hunted me down—so I spent some time enjoying her company before finally heading home.
She’s as bratty as ever despite her “loli-cute” looks, which is probably why I find myself wanting to see her so often. Her soft, developing body, those twitching reactions, that high feverish warmth—everything about her is syrupy and tight.
She talks a big game like she knows exactly how to handle an older guy like me, but she doesn’t actually have much stamina. Her sheer cuteness makes me want to tease her just a little too much, leaving Mia completely weak-kneed every single time.
”Haa… ♡ Haa… ♡ Geez, give me a break for once, Onii-san… ♡”
Hearing her say stuff like that only makes me want to hustle harder; I honestly think it’s just an instinctive reaction at this point.

Living a normal life requires all sorts of things, so I have to go out and shop occasionally. Right after I moved in, I was missing everything from beds to wardrobes, but I’ve slowly furnished the place by making frequent trips.
My main destination is Elmer-san’s Beunemünde Merchant Guild. Elmer-san was Ilse’s former master. Part of it is a connection I want to maintain, but it’s also a way to apologize for poaching Ilse from him, even if I did pay the price.
Lately, since Grete, Vanessa, and Nicola moved in, I’ve been visiting constantly to pick up things like extra beds. Regina-san is supposed to join us soon, so I’ll need to buy her furniture too.
”Welcome to the shop,” Elmer said.
”Good afternoon,” I replied.
”Hello there, Elmer-san! ♪” Grete added.
When I arrived with the five members of the First Blood party, Elmer-san greeted us with a bright, cheerful smile. Only Grete and I responded out loud. I’ve stopped trying to wrap my head around Grete’s absurdly vast social network; it’s just who she is.
Liese, never one to step out of line in front of her master, offered a silent bow. Camilla was practically glued to my side, wagging her tail with a beaming, full-faced grin. Since she was standing before her former master, Ilse was being uncharacteristically quiet and reserved. Nicola, being the shy type, just gave a polite nod.
Elmer-san still does some traveling merchant work by carriage, but he keeps a physical storefront too. It’s not exactly a high-end luxury boutique, but he has all sorts of connections. He deals with the slave trader where Liese came from and the Grünewald Merchant Guild.
”My household is growing, so I’m here to pick up some more bedding,” I said.
”Haha, sounds like life is going well for you,” Elmer replied.
”Thanks to you, yeah,” I said.
I was specifically here for Regina-san’s stuff today. It’s a bit early, but there’s no harm in being prepared. As the group grows, every single room in the house is going to be occupied. If we get any more people, I’ll have to either convert the guest room or look into an expansion.
”By the way, Daisuke-san, do you have a moment?” Elmer asked.
”Sure,” I said.
After paying for what was in stock and arranging a later pickup for the rest, Elmer-san approached me with a serious look on his face. It didn’t seem like the kind of thing we could discuss standing up, so we headed to the reception room. I told the five girls from First Blood to kill some time in the shop while we talked.
”Daisuke-san, you’re a B-Rank Adventurer, right? I was wondering if you could supply us with Rejuvenation Potions¹. I have a client who wants to buy as many as we can get,” Elmer said.
”I don’t mind, but… aren’t you going through the Guild for that?” I asked.
”Lately, the commission fees have been all over the place depending on the clerk. On high-ticket items, that cut becomes an absolute nightmare,” Elmer explained.
”That sounds like a mess,” I said.
”It is. We’re really in a bind here…” Elmer added.
Clemens, the alchemist that Aya and Magda are apprenticed to, mentioned something similar. I’ve already delivered the potion ingredients he requested. He was sporting a smug, lecherous grin while getting smacked around by Magda and Aya. The old man never learns.
It’s the Department Head’s job to make sure rank settings and rewards are fair, but since Randolph is a king of favoritism, I bet he’s letting certain staff members get away with murder. I wonder why that clerk is doing it? Are they skimming off the top because they’re greedy? Or are they just incompetent and making mistakes? Knowing that place, it could be both.
In the end, I decided to take Elmer-san’s request. There’s no rule saying an Adventurer can’t sell goods outside the Guild, so it should be fine.
”Daisuke is such a softie, isn’t he? ~” Ilse teased.
”Pipe down,” I said.
Ilse was running her mouth again. The man helped us out; it’s only right to return the favor.
”Ilse, you’re the last person who should be talking, considering you were saved by Master’s kindness,” Liese scolded.
”Ugh… you’re right, Liese-san. Sorry, Daisuke,” Ilse muttered.
”I love how kind Master is!” Camilla cheered.
”Thanks, Camilla. You too, Liese,” I said.
”It was nothing,” Liese replied.
”I was saved by Daisuke-san too, and the same goes for Nicola, right? ♪” Grete asked.
”That’s true. It was the best first experience ever,” Nicola added.
”Man, I’m so jealous of Nicola! ~” Grete whined.
”Ahaha…” I laughed nervously.
Grete shot me a longing look. I appreciate her affection, and I’m starting to fall for her too, but I need her to hold on just a little longer.
”Anyway, Ilse isn’t entirely wrong, so keep speaking your mind,” I said.
”Well, that’s just like Daisuke,” Ilse noted.
”Wait, is that really okay?” Nicola asked.
Nicola, who only recently became my lover, looked shocked. Grete just kept her usual smile, not surprised at all.
”It’s fine. To the outside world, you three are slaves, but I consider us equals. I’ve told them that from the start,” I explained.
”You really are a sweetheart, Daisuke-san! ♪” Grete said.
”I think my common sense is just built different, honestly,” I replied.
With the slave situation settled, we moved back to the topic of the Rejuvenation Potions. “If it’s Daisuke-san, he’ll probably find them in a heartbeat,” Grete said.
”Totally! ♪” Camilla agreed.
”Whoa, hold on. It’s not like they’re just lying around on the street,” I argued.
”I’m sure Master will be fine!” Camilla insisted.
”I agree with Camilla,” Liese said.
”It is Daisuke we’re talking about, after all,” Ilse added.
The five of them all chimed in, apparently convinced that failure wasn’t even an option. Well, since those “dungeon-sourced” potions are actually just the ones I make myself, they aren’t technically wrong. The real question is how many to hand over. I don’t have a massive stockpile, so two is probably my limit. I’ll deliver one for now and see how they react.
* * *
Later, while I was relaxing at home after dinner, a visitor stopped by.
”Can I help you?” I asked.
”Pardon me. My name is Vera. Is this the residence of Daisuke-san?” she asked.
”Yes, I’m Daisuke,” I replied.
Standing there was a beautiful woman with glasses and long brown hair. Her sharp, almond-shaped eyes reminded me of someone, but I couldn’t place who. She was wearing a long-skirted maid uniform; she looked like a consummate professional.
It was hard to tell because of the outfit, but she looked slender, and her chest was a mystery. At the very least, she wasn’t bursting at the seams. She looked to be in her early twenties, with a very composed, career-woman vibe. Despite the different race and hair color, my first impression of her was very similar to Dietlinde-san. Between the uniform and the fact that her glasses looked expensive, she was definitely a servant for some nobility.
I don’t have any noble friends I’d call close, but I’ve caused enough trouble lately to have a few ideas why she’d be here. I couldn’t just leave her standing at the door, so I invited her into the reception room. From the way she moved, she clearly had some martial arts training. Her Level was probably a bit lower than Liese’s, I guessed. She could probably handle herself against anyone who wasn’t an Adventurer or a soldier.
Since she was a noble’s maid, I figured it was best to play the good host, so I brewed the tea myself. I used the high-quality leaves I keep for guests. Liese and the others could do it, but thanks to my Cooking Skills², I can brew a much better cup.
”I hope this tea is to your liking,” I said.
”Thank you… Hmm,” Vera noted.
The maid’s eyes gave a little spark as she took a sip. Looks like she approved. Now, she definitely didn’t come here just for a drink, so what was the deal?
”Forgive the sudden intrusion. I am Vera, a maid in service to the house of Marquis Gilman,” she said.
”Thank you for the introduction. As you probably know, I’m Daisuke, the Adventurer,” I replied.
Yep, noble maid. And a Marquis at that—that’s some serious high-society clout. My Danger Sense³ wasn’t tingling, but I knew I had to play this carefully.
But “Gilman”… I’ve heard that name. Who was it? Oh, right! The Prime Minister I spoke to right after I was reincarnated was Fritz Gilman. I remembered him being a slightly stout, jolly-looking old guy. Wait. Does that mean she’s an attendant for Martina-sama? Holy crap!
Even without the recent stories I heard from Clarissa-san, the tension level just went through the roof.
”So you’re with Martina-sama’s household,” I noted.
”Precisely,” Vera replied.
She explained that her job involved more than just housework; she handled all sorts of odd jobs like gathering intel in the city. Basically, she was a high-end fixer disguised as a maid.
”So, what can I do for you? I don’t recall doing anything that would earn me a scolding from His Excellency the Prime Minister or Martina-sama…” I said.
”Oh, no. I simply came at Lady Martina’s request to hear about the recent monster subjugation,” Vera explained.
”I see. But I assume the Knights’ Order already filed a report…” I countered.
”We are aware. However, it only states that they ‘defeated the boss in cooperation with the Adventurer Daisuke,’ leaving the details quite vague,” Vera said.
It looks like Captain Emily and Cassandra kept their word. Captain Emily was knocked out, so she wouldn’t have known the specifics anyway. The Guild probably sent a report too, but I didn’t give them much to work with. I guess Martina-sama caught wind of it while digging through the paperwork. It felt a bit like old news, but she’s a busy woman. Unless it was a crisis, it makes sense she’d get around to it whenever she had a gap in her schedule.
”I’m sorry, but I don’t have anything to add beyond what’s in the official report,” I said.
”Not even for Martina-sama?” she asked.
”This is my ‘bread and butter,’ after all. I hope you can understand why I’d keep it close to the chest,” I replied.
”I see,” Vera said simply.
Vera-san didn’t seem upset; she just gave a stoic nod. Martina-sama already knows my Class and Unique Skills, but I’m still nowhere near “invincible” status yet. I really wanted to avoid letting the specifics of my power get out. Once my Level is high enough, it won’t matter, but for now…
”I understand your position on that. On another note… have you ever considered entering the service of the Kingdom?” Vera asked.
”The Kingdom?” I repeated.
”Yes. Even without the details, it’s clear you are a man of significant power. As a patron, you could find no one better than the future Prime Minister, Lady Martina,” she explained.
”I see,” I said.
So the recruitment pitch was the real reason for the visit. I figured this was coming. Most people would jump at the chance, and working for Martina-sama wouldn’t be the worst thing in the world. But I can’t deal with a job where I don’t have the right to say “no.” My answer was already set.
”It’s a very flattering offer, but I’ve grown quite fond of my current life of freedom and leisure…” I said.
”…I see,” Vera replied.
I couldn’t be brutally honest, so I sugarcoated it a bit. Not that “I like being lazy” is much of a cover, but it worked. Vera-san looked a little let down. Maybe this really was her main objective.
”It is a shame, but I was told not to force the issue if you refused. That aside… I’ve heard rumors that Daisuke-san is quite the talented confectioner,” she added.
”Huh? Oh, I mean, I guess so?” I muttered.
I didn’t remember ever giving Martina-sama anything to eat, so how did she know? It couldn’t have been the “Gluttonous Princess,” so maybe Mercedes? They’re around the same age, but do they move in the same circles?
”I heard it from my friend, Elke,” Vera explained.
”Elke… -san?” I asked.
”She is a lady-in-waiting to Her Highness Rosemarie,” she said.
”Ah, right. That makes sense,” I noted.
That fussy lady-in-waiting, huh? She seemed like a total stiff, but I guess she actually liked my cooking. Vera-san probably hangs out at the Royal Palace as part of her odd jobs.
”I heard Daisuke-san is a master of making sweets,” she repeated.
”Uh…?” I started.
”I heard Daisuke-san is a master of making sweets,” she said firmly.
”……” I went silent.
Okay, she’s totally shaking me down for treats. She seemed so serious, but she’s actually got a bit of a mischievous streak. My high Cooking Skill is technically part of my secret power, but whatever, it’s just snacks. I already fed the Gluttonous Princess, anyway. If a few pastries can keep me on her good side, it’s a bargain.
”Here, please have some,” I said.
”Oh my, I feel terrible for making you go to such trouble,” Vera said.
She said that with a completely straight face after basically demanding them. What a character. The honey-glazed treat I brought out was a seasonal fruit tart—one of my personal favorites. It’s a huge hit with Camilla and my other sweet-tooth lovers. Only Vanessa says, “I’d rather have a bottle of booze,” but you can’t win ’em all.
Vera-san sliced into it with her fork and took a bite. She chewed slowly, savoring it, and then proceeded to finish the entire thing without saying a single word.
”…I see. This is quite something. I heard Her Highness Rosemarie was given muffins, and those must have been exquisite as well. I truly wish I could have tasted them,” Vera noted.
”Ah, well… here, have another,” I said.
I started bringing out a variety of other sweets for the seemingly bottomless Vera-san. For a slender woman, she can really put it away. I guess the “dessert stomach” is a universal constant.
”…Phew. If I eat any more, it will ruin my dinner, so I must stop here… but leaving such delicacies behind would be…” she trailed off, her eyes darting back to the box.
”Right. I’ll pack a box for you to take home,” I said.
”Oh, how very thoughtful of you. Thank you,” Vera replied.
”No problem at all,” I said.
I mean, what else was I supposed to say? I figured she’d share them with Martina-sama, so I packed enough for several people. She wouldn’t just scarf them all down herself… right?
”Well then, I shall be on my way. Thank you for the wonderful treats,” Vera said.
”Sure thing. Good luck with your work,” I said.
”……” she stood there silently.
”…Is something wrong?” I asked.
”Thank you for the wonderful treats,” she repeated.
”Er, right. Next time you stop by, I’ll have some more ready for you,” I promised.
”Thank you. I find myself in this neighborhood quite often, so I shall take you up on that. However, receiving such gifts for free would be improper. In exchange for the sweets, would you be willing to accept information? I can provide news on various matters as long as it doesn’t cross certain lines,” she offered.
”Yeah, that sounds like a deal. Stop by whenever,” I said.
”Very well. I shall drop by without hesitation whenever I am nearby,” she concluded.
”Hahaha…” I laughed.
She is definitely coming back. 100%. Vera-san gave a polite bow and left, looking like she was in a great mood. She seemed like a straight-laced pro, but man, she was quirky. It’s a bit of a weird arrangement, but if I can get inside info from the Prime Minister’s office for the price of a few tarts, it’s a steal. Not that I really have a use for high-level political intel, but hey.
