Volume 2 Chapter 12 Determination
Edited by: Kanaa-senpai
I woke up in a dark room, my consciousness having been reaped in an instant.
Lubellman-san, a clerk at the shop who had been watching over me, explained that I had received treatment from a qualified Medical Mage¹.
As soon as he left to report that I was awake, a massive old man stomped in and demanded to speak.
Identifying himself as Helmut Vogt-the grandfather of Nico, the one who had punched me-he declared that if I gave him any half-hearted answers, he would kill me.
Schwing.
The sharp, metallic shriek of steel leaving its scabbard.
On top of the suffocating pressure he emitted, he now held a naked blade.
(I am seriously about to be murdered.)
”Listen well, even if you try to use magic to tuck tail and run, your body will be in two halves before you can blink.”
(Thank you for the polite advice.)
Now wasn’t the time for sarcasm. This was bad; he had even seen through my desperate plan to use a Fireball² to escape, realizing I couldn’t move my body.
”What is it? Since I’ve been told not to move, I will answer you as I am.”
I spoke through the sheer, paralyzing terror, trying my best not to let my agitation show.
With this type of man, if he smells fear, there’s no telling what he’ll do.
”I do not mind,” the old man replied.
I closed my eyes, desperately trying to steady my heart, but I hadn’t felt this close to the edge since the battle at Vod Fortress or the time Isabella caught me.
After a heavy pause, the old man opened his mouth.
”Did you bed my granddaughter, Nico?”
(Is that what he’s starting with?)
My true nature told me that lying was a fatal mistake.
”Yes,” I said.
Clang!
The sharp ring of steel echoed.
”An honest one, at least. Does that mean you are prepared for the consequences?”
(No, no, no! There’s no way I’m prepared for that! Besides, Nico was the one who crawled into bed in her underwear!)
Not that I could ever say that out loud. My heartbeat became so intense it was suffocating, as if my heart was about to jump out of my mouth.
”So, do you have any intention of taking Nico as your Primary Wife³?”
(If I tell him the truth, won’t I be killed on the spot?)
Opening my eyes slightly, I checked the old man’s weapon. He was brandishing a magnificent two-handed sword, the kind used by the Royal Army. If he swung that down, my body would undoubtedly be split in two in an instant. I sucked air through pursed lips, trying to stave off hyperventilation.
”Well? Which is it?”
A voice that seemed to vibrate from the bottom of his stomach shaved years off my life.
”I do not. I already have a Primary Wife.”
I tried to give a calm response, but the end of my sentence wavered. If that sword moved, my only hope was to bunch up the blanket with my left hand and pray it cushioned the first blow, even if it meant losing the arm.
But the old man did not move.
”Hmph. Fine. At least you won’t lie to me in this state.”
(Thank God. Thank God I’m a serious person. Thank God I’m honest.)
”I was against that girl becoming a maid and running off to some rural village. But she said she chose it herself, so I reluctantly let her go. And look what happened! Just because the Village Head died, they sent her back. I can no longer allow that girl to be unhappy.”
I could somehow understand where he was coming from. Moreover, I might be partly responsible for her uncle sending Nico back in the first place.
”Therefore, this is the last question.”
The old man took a step forward, closing the distance even further. Even if I blocked with my arm, wouldn’t he just cleave right through it and take my torso too? That was the kind of murderous intent he was radiating.
”So, what are you planning to do with my granddaughter?”
The sheer intimidation nearly made me black out. My nerves from the waist down had gone completely numb from fear. Not only that, something was rising in my throat, choking me so I couldn’t breathe.
”What’s wrong? Answer me, or die.”
Gasp.
He was serious. The old man was absolutely going to kill me. I had to answer, but the words wouldn’t come. In the first place, my mouth wouldn’t open. It was like I had fallen under the old man’s curse; I couldn’t move a single muscle.
”Master!”
It was the voice of the clerk, Lubellman-san. I heard the thundering footsteps of several people rushing over.
”Please, stop this!”
”Old man, what are you doing?”
”Let go! I’m going to kill this brat!”
Several people were tackling the old man from behind.
”Larry, run for it!”
I heard the voice of the guard, and the old man’s curse was broken. Scrambling off the bed on all fours, I dived for the gap between the people and the door.
”Running away, you coward?! Let me go!”
(Call me a coward all you want, I don’t care!)
I twisted my body out through the crowded doorway and burst into the hallway. Actually, it wasn’t a hallway, but an arcade facing a courtyard. I sprinted across that courtyard toward an opening I thought was the back of the shop.
”Wait, you little shit!”
Just as I caught sight of the Danube River through the opening, a roar erupted from behind me. Looking back, I saw the old man chasing me, his face a furious shade of crimson. He was gripping that two-handed sword in his right hand; he wound up as he ran and threw the damn thing. It came screaming toward me, spinning with terrifying velocity.
Looking back caused me to stumble slightly. If I hadn’t, my life would have surely fallen prey to that sword. A ferocious whistle of clashing air. My ears rang with a sharp hum from the wind pressure, and the sword buried itself into a stone pillar several meters ahead.
(That old man is insane! “Not long for this world”? Give me a break!)
I didn’t look back again. I just ran. I don’t even remember how I got back from there. Wandering the plateau, using the tall building of the common school as a landmark, I somehow managed to stagger back to the Magic School just before sunset.
* * *
”This is a real mess, isn’t it?”
We were in the reception area of the Principal’s office. Fearing the old man might come storming in with a weapon, I had explained the whole situation to the Principal.
”Honestly. And I was so happy we’d finally found a part-timer who could handle the laundry,” the ditzy housemother, Kunila, chimed in with something completely off-base.
”It really is a problem,” the Principal added. “The freshmen used so much parchment that our stock is low. Knowing that old man Vogt, he’s likely to get his feelings hurt and refuse to wholesale to us out of pure spite.”
Apparently, Nico’s family home and this school have business dealings; the Principal spoke as if she and the old man were old acquaintances.
”Um…”
”What is it?” the Principal snapped, glaring at me.
”Principal, you interviewed Nico, didn’t you? Did you not know she’d run away from home?”
”I knew. And?”
Without looking even slightly guilty, she admitted she’d hired Nico as a part-timer while knowing the story of her running away.
”Did you not think to tell her family?”
”Why should I?”
”Her family was worried she’d been sold off or something!”
”I don’t know about all that. Regardless of her reasons, a woman who has had her coming-of-age ceremony⁴ applied because she needed work. Why would I need to inform them?”
It’s true that in this world, girls reach their coming-of-age at thirteen and boys at fourteen. But that’s mostly a formality; especially for women, things are adjusted to suit the family’s needs.
But wait. The old man said that before her ceremony, Nico had become her Sister-in-law’s maid of her own will. That means now that she’s an adult, she has every right to come to me of her own free will-the old man shouldn’t have a leg to stand on.
And yet, he nearly killed me. This is absurd. Moreover, that old man definitely hasn’t given up.
(If I think about it in Japanese terms, if a girl in her third year of middle school said she wanted to live with a boy in his second year of middle school, the parents would obviously oppose it. But is there a grandfather who would try to murder the boy for “seducing” his cute granddaughter…?)
”Listen, I think my life is in danger. That old man was actually trying to kill me.”
”Well, based on the story, that would be the case. And?”
”Am I going to be okay?” I asked, feeling incredibly pathetic.
”Hmm. With Vogt’s temperament, it wouldn’t be surprising if he raided the school.”
(Is she serious? She’s talking like this is happening to someone else!)
”But more importantly than that…”
(Oh, so it’s just ‘that’ now?)
”We need to decide who’s going to look after you.”
”Huh?”
”Should I have the housemother look after you? She’s been starved for company for a long time, so I’m sure she’d treasure you.”
(What exactly are you suggesting?)
”Don’t you get it? I’m telling you to go sleep at Housemother Kunila’s place.”
Was the housemother actually blushing and wriggling her body?
By “starved for company,” was she talking about her not having a partner for the night? In other words, was I supposed to “service” her in exchange for being looked after?
”Won’t that… cause a lot of problems later on?”
”Who else, then? Are you coming to my place? Well, it’s not that I wouldn’t look after you, but a teacher and a student living together would be a much bigger scandal, wouldn’t it?”
”That’s true, that’s true,” I said, nodding my head frantically.
”But Marie’s place is no good because she’s sending Darina to the Magic Academy. It can’t be helped. Stay at Henrietta’s place until the situation settles down. She’s already keeping one slave, right?”
The housemother answered with a disappointed “Yes, ma’am.”
I was given Henrietta-san’s room number and lab location, and the conversation ended with me being told that if she rejected me, I should just go to the housemother’s.
Also, since Nico was gone, my student uniform wouldn’t be ready in time, so I’d have to attend the Rookie Welcome Party on the 25th in plain clothes.
Come to think of it, since I left my robe at Nico’s house, I ended up having to buy another one.
Carrying the brand-new robe, I went to the research wing, but Henrietta-san’s lab was locked.
When I went toward the dormitory room I’d heard about, she came to the door-not in Gothic Lolita, but in her underwear with a blanket draped over her shoulders.
Her hair was a bird’s nest, and her chest looked like it was about to burst the buttons of her chemise. I had a hard time peeling my eyes away until she pulled the blanket tighter. There, I finally explained the situation.
”I see… that is quite a bother desu. I’m actually about to head out. I won’t be back until around noon on the 25th, three days from now desuno.”
”Is that so?”
My shoulders dropped at the thought that I’d have to go to the housemother’s clutches after all. Apparently, Henrietta-san was heading to an academic conference in the Royal Capital.
”There is a lecture by the professor I admire, Professor Pauman, so I will return after listening to that desu.”
Because a professor she respected very much was giving a lecture, she said she had been preparing for six months.
Well, it couldn’t be helped then.
”Do you have nowhere else to go?”
”No, the housemother’s place…”
”In that case, why don’t you stay here? Pamela is here, after all.”
The white Gothic Lolita-Pamela-appeared out of nowhere and said to Henrietta-san, “Hey, are you sure about this?”
(Wait, wasn’t she a slave?)
”But he’s coming to my lab anyway. It’ll get out eventually, won’t it desuno?”
”That’s true, but are you telling me I have to take care of this guy’s personal needs?”
”It can’t be helped, can it desu? Besides, you are a slave, after all.”
(So a slave really is a slave…)
Just as I was thinking it seemed like a relationship I didn’t quite understand, Henrietta-san began to explain.
”larry-kun, listen carefully. Pamela looks like a child, but she’s actually much older than me—an Elf. The Gothic Lolita hair accessory also serves to hide her ears. Of course, it’s also my personal preference. Indeed, the luxurious hair accessory conceals her ears. Then there’s the slave—well, they’re a slave, but they can use Mana and are very knowledgeable, so I’d say they’re more like a partner to me. I’d rather not let others know about that, though. They also accompany me at night,” she added.
Apparently, only a few friends and the Principal know that Pamela is an Elf.
However, the reason for keeping it a secret isn’t entirely clear.
”Right, Pamela can read minds, but since you’ll find out when you return anyway… Do you know about mind-reading? It’s more about reading feelings and memories than thoughts.”
”Ah, yeah, I can do it too.”
When I answered honestly, both of them looked surprised.
”Well, that’s tough. Pamela, you’ve found a good one,” she said.
”Don’t blame me if you get rejected,” Pamela replied.
The Elf’s words didn’t quite land. What did she mean by “reject”?
”Alright, Larry, can you help with the preparations?”
I was led into the room and helped pack clothes and documents into a large bag.
Instead of fixing her hair, she just covered her messy locks with the accessory, only combing the exposed parts.
”Okay, preparations are done. It’s heavy, but please carry it,” Pamela said.
As instructed, I carried the heavy luggage to the nearby administration building.
A chartered carriage was waiting there, and the driver struggled to load the bag.
This carriage would take us to the station, and from there, a four-horse high-speed carriage would head to the Royal Capital, arriving tomorrow evening.
She planned to attend the conference until the following evening and then return by ship, making it back in time for the Rookie welcome party.
”If you can’t hold back, take it out on Pamela,” she whispered as we parted ways.
I saw off the chartered carriage until it left the school gates, then returned to the room with Pamela.
”What did she just say?” I asked.
”She said it’s okay to… you know,” Pamela replied.
”Oh, is that all?”
Is that okay?
I can’t keep up with their moral standards.
Even though I only arrived at school last night, so much has happened that it feels like I’ve been here for months.
During dinner, Marie and the others found me again, persistently asking where I’d been in the afternoon. After Nico’s story, they jokingly got worked up, then held my hand and happily told me, “The Principal approved night companionship.”
”So, what are you doing tonight without Nico?” Marie asked.
Her tone implied she was inviting me to her place.
”No, if her grandfather shows up, it’ll be trouble, so I won’t stay in the student dorm,” I replied.
”So, you’re staying at that boob monster’s place?” Marie asked, glaring at Pamela.
”Ah, but Henrietta’s away on a trip,” I said.
”You’re going to do it with such a small kid?” Marie pressed.
” Idiot, I like big breasts,” I retorted.
My words seemed to hurt her a little, as she clutched her chest and shot me a resentful look. However, since she seemed reassured about tonight, the conversation didn’t continue.
When we returned to Henrietta’s room, Pamela made tea.
”What’s wrong, kid? You seem down,” Pamela said.
”I’m just tired from the change of place and everything that’s happened,” I replied.
Pamela nodded and started taking off her clothes right in front of me.
”I know, when guys are tired, they get half-aroused, right? Tired erection, or something. Go ahead, devour this immature body and relieve yourself if you want,” she said.
With the hair accessory removed, her pointed ears, like Granny Ferris’s, stuck out from her silky hair, and a slave crest was visible on her forehead.
However, her stubby, flat-chested, childlike body didn’t stir any desire in me.
At least give me a waist like Nico’s.
”Oh, you’re no fun,” Pamela said.
”Say whatever you want. I’m tired, so I’m going to sleep,” I replied.
As I stripped off my clothes and tried to lie down on Henrietta’s bed, Pamela kicked my foot.
”Pick up your own clothes. Use the hanger over there,” she said.
Though Pamela has a slave crest on her forehead, she doesn’t seem obedient toward me.
Reluctantly, I forced my tired body to pick up my clothes and finally lay down on the bed.
”Hey, kid,” Pamela said.
”It’s Larry,” I replied.
Even while lying down, this slave is annoying.
”I’ll sleep beside you,” Pamela said.
”Do whatever you want,” I replied.
”I want to see Larry’s heart—my master’s heart,” she said.
”Fine, do whatever, but you’ll be seen anyway,” I said.
As I turned my back, the room darkened, likely because she turned off the light. Then she slipped under the covers.
”Then, if you’ll excuse me…”
”Hey, don’t put your hand there!”
She actually put her hand inside my pants.
“Oh, you’re no fun,” Pamela said via Telepathy, moving her hand toward my stomach. “Here’s fine, right?”
“Yeah, don’t move,” I replied.
“Got it, got it. You can even attack me if you want,” she said.
I had no such intention and just wanted to sleep, so I ignored her.
“Hmm, so Larry’s a reincarnated person. That explains the Special Recommendation. Makes sense. Still, it’s interesting. All these videos of naked women and intercourse… So, you’re not into childlike bodies after all,” she said.
“Pamela…”
“Are you in the mood to attack me?”
“Who would be? Hey, I don’t mind if you rummage through my memories, but stop with the Telepathy. I can’t sleep,” I said.
“You’re so cold. It’s fine if you tie me up—it seems like you’re into that sort of thing,” she said.
So annoying.
Frustrated, I pushed Pamela off the bed, wrapped myself in the blanket, and closed my eyes.
”Larry, my apologies. I’ll be quiet,” Pamela said.
Ignoring her, I closed my eyes tightly and let go of consciousness.
The next morning, I woke up to find Pamela sleeping next to me in an outrageous position.
Even the noble Elf race loses its dignity with such sleeping habits.
The window here, likely due to the inability to make proper glass yet, was reinforced with convex glass and thin iron bars.
Through it, the faint light of dawn filtered into the room.
In a village, people would already be up and working at this hour.
But here, there’s nothing to do.
Well, I have to go back to my room for my part-time job (Amber charging), but since I’m still tired, I’ll sleep some more.
When I woke up next, Pamela was wearing her Gothic Lolita outfit.
”Hey, Larry, what about breakfast?” she asked, shaking my body.
”I don’t need any, so you go eat, Pamela. There’s an Account Plate in my pocket,” I said.
”I’ll use Henrietta’s money, but are you okay?” she asked.
”Yeah, I’ll eat at lunch,” I replied, wrapping myself back in the blanket.
I’m tired.
And there’s something weighing on my heart.
I feel unfulfilled and irritable.
Still, after lying still for a while, I dozed off, and time passed.
What’s weighing on my heart…
It’s Nico, whom I left behind at that house.
The Principal’s words kept echoing in my mind: “A woman who’s officially an adult accepted a job for whatever reason. Why do you need to tell her?”
The reason is probably that she wants to be with me, even if only while I’m at school.
Considering her feelings, is this situation okay?
But that grandfather—he’s too much of a hurdle.
Even though I’m not sleepy, I pull the blanket over my head.
I keep thinking the same things over and over.
”Larry, you have visitors!”
I stuck my head out of the blanket to see Marie and the others entering.
”What are you doing?” Marie asked, sitting on the bed without permission.
”I’m just feeling sluggish,” I lied.
”Well, we’ll go without you,” she said.
”Where?” I asked.
”To Nico’s place, obviously,” she replied.
”Why?” I pressed.
”You can’t just leave such a devoted girl alone, can you?” Manuela answered for the sulking Marie.
But what is she saying?
Wasn’t Nico a nuisance to Marie? Women are incomprehensible.
Besides, that house has a monstrously dangerous grandfather.
”So, you stay here and rest,” she said.
No way that’s happening.
I threw off the blanket and sat up.
If I don’t go, Nico probably won’t come back.
They seemed to have heard the details from the dorm mother, but that airhead has a strong imagination, so I explained it again. And then…
”Fine, I’ll go alone,” I said.
”What? You said you’d be killed…” Marie replied.
”I’ll be fine. I just didn’t have the resolve before,” I said.
That’s right. Last time, I should have told her grandfather I’d make Nico my fourth wife.
With all the land I bought in the village, I need all the manpower I can get.
I’ll handle the Poll Tax for one person. I’m the landlord!
Nico came all this way because she likes me.
I need to make up my mind.
”If I fail, I’ll count on you guys,” I said.
”Sure, if that happens…” Marie replied.
To appear resolute in front of the girls, I said it nonchalantly, but…
I still can’t shake my fear of her grandfather.
”I’m hungry, so I’m going to get something to eat,” I said.
This is an escape.
I want to delay leaving the school for even a second.
That’s right, I’ll stay in the cafeteria until the very last moment before the shared carriage leaves.
How pathetic I am.
And at that moment,
I stood up, wearing my new robe.
I went to the administration building to register my departure and headed to the entrance.
There, the shared carriage was just leaving the school gates.
Déjà vu.
Last time, I dragged Nico, who was reluctant to go.
What was she feeling then?
”Damn it, I’m going. I’ll walk and bring Nico back,” I said, slapping my cheeks with both hands to psyche myself up.
Last time, I was lying down when I faced her grandfather, so I failed.
This time, I’ll face him head-on.
I took a step forward, no matter how reckless it might be.
