Volume 10 Chapter 2 Unreasonable

Edited by: Kanaa-senpai

 Dietlinde: a serious sheep-type Beastman.

 Henriette: Randolph’s favorite, a dog-type Beastman.

 Randolph: Dietlinde’s and Henriette’s superior, a bear-type Beastman.

 ===

Liese’s Seal removal failed, but it felt like we’d become friends.

I wanted to help Dietlinde-san, but intervening in work matters was difficult. If there were a trigger, I could join the conversation…

”Ah, Daisuke-san, my senior Dietlinde-senpai would do something this terrible… I’m sad.”

 ”Hmm… you.”

 ”Ah… Daisuke-san…”

Henriette, who had spotted me, approached while fake-crying. It was useful because it gave me a chance to get into the discussion, but I didn’t want to get close to Henriette…

On the other hand, Randolph seemed to recognize my face and made a hostile expression. What a coincidence, I disliked it too. It had happened before, and treating an equal (as I heard) with disrespect was… unprofessional.

Dietlinde-san’s expression changed from blank to slightly relieved… or so it seemed. It might have been my imagination. I still couldn’t tell perfectly.

In any case, I seized the opportunity. I swallowed my irritation and spoke as calmly as possible. Even Camilla read the room and let go of her arm. She was almost perfectly attached.

 ”Is something wrong?”

”This is an internal Guild issue. I have nothing to say to an outsider like you.”

Randolph rejected me outright. As expected, but it was a bit troublesome. I decided to use Henriette as a hook.

”Henriette-san, does your speaking to me mean it concerns me as well?”

 ”Let’s see… Since it’s at Randolph-san’s request for Daisuke-san, let’s have Daisuke-san listen too.”

”Hmm, normally we wouldn’t let an outsider¹ intervene, but if Henriette says so, it’s fine to let them listen.”

 ”Thank you sooo much ♡”

”What, this is within my discretion as Department Head².”

 ”Ufuufu, indeed ♡”

Henriette paused briefly, then added her voice to Randolph’s. The plan succeeded. The cost was an absurd exchange happening right before my eyes. Patience, patience… Actually, if I truly were an outsider, Randolph would be abusing his authority, and Henriette would have forgotten to keep up the crying act.

 ”So, what’s the matter?”

”The documents for the quests that Dietlinde-senpai processed for Daisuke-san and others contained irregularities.”

 ”That’s right.”

 ”Specifically, the order documents—”

”I’ll speak from my side. You stay silent.”

 ”……Yes.”

Randolph let Henriette speak freely while preventing Dietlinde-san from speaking. That was plainly cruel. Even the cool Dietlinde-san seemed genuinely troubled.

”My investigation found that several of the requests Dietlinde accepted had defects. The quantities listed on the completion documents differed from what you delivered and what the Guild sold. The discrepancy in the reward exceeded ten Gold Coins in total. Where that money went is unknown. That’s what happened, right, Henriette?”

”Yes. I noticed it, reported it to Randolph-san, and was about to confirm with Dietlinde-senpai.”

Perhaps Randolph was just taking Henriette’s word at face value without checking himself? To question him like that was insane… Ten Gold Coins is a considerable sum. I don’t recall the daily rewards precisely, but there were days the numbers didn’t add up. The monsters we hunt aren’t the same every day, and monster sale prices can fluctuate due to Dungeon Upheavals³. As long as the reward was decent, I didn’t mind occasional upsets, so I didn’t notice.

Hmm, is this also my responsibility?

”The paperwork is the 담당’s job, so if the documents were flawed, it’s natural to think Dietlinde did it.”

”No, as I’ve been saying, it wasn’t me.”

 ”Oh? Then who did it?”

 ”I don’t know. But—”

”You don’t know! If there’s no one else, then you did it! Enough, you’re fired!”

 ”Kuu….”

Randolph’s anger kept rising, and he shouted over Dietlinde-san’s words. He never listened to anyone even when I was talking, so I wasn’t surprised, but it was still unpleasant. He even used intimidation Skills, channeling magical power at Dietlinde-san. Even the usually cool her shivered and stepped back.

No staff member dared to reprimand him, perhaps fearing collateral damage. The handsome twins and the Black Gyaru Trio ignored it. A boss who threatens subordinates, forces his opinion, and mistakenly believes his correctness makes subordinates obey is a power-harassment monster who should die.

If he once excelled, he now thinks he can still do everything, which makes him even more dangerous. Even if he’s a good player, that doesn’t guarantee he’s a good manager. My reincarnated companions Osamu and Otto were also bad players…

Since I entered the conversation to help Dietlinde-san, I shouldn’t just watch—I must participate. I used Healing Magic to calm Dietlinde-san’s fear, but the shock didn’t fully leave her; she looked ill.

”Alright, let’s calm down a bit. First, we need to hear the parties involved properly.”

”Hmph, supervising this person is within my discretion. Keep your mouth shut.”

”I respect your authority, but shouting won’t solve anything.”

”This kind of person is just right at this level.”

He’s truly a scumbag. I could probably refute him alone, but if things get inconvenient, he’ll flip and tell outsiders to stay silent. Then I’d have to handle everything by myself, which would be hard, so I should prepare a possible move.

 ”Grete, a moment.”

 ”What’s up, Daisuke-san?”

”I’m sorry, could you run a quick errand for me?”

 ”Sure ♪ wait a sec ♪”

 ”Please.”

Grete has high social skills, so she should manage. It might take a bit of time, so I’ll also defend Dietlinde-san in the meantime. I can’t imagine she did it. Even if she did, I could forgive her—she said she donates to her orphanage.

”Randolph, Department Head, from my position as a victim of the Guild’s mishandling, I think uncovering the truth is essential. I’ve also heard that fees are sometimes excessively high, and if this continues it will affect the Guild’s credibility. This isn’t a trivial issue to be brushed aside.”

”Hmm… I was just about to hear that.”

”But Dietlinde-senpai is Daisuke-san’s handler, so didn’t she do it?”

”Just because she’s the handler doesn’t mean she does everything alone, right?”

 ”Yes, but…”

The Quest Mediation Department decides the reward amounts, success judgments, and payments for adventurer requests, but the process doesn’t end by simply placing materials on a counter after a quest. The Dismantling Department that brings in monsters, the Appraisal Department that evaluates treasure chest contents, and the Accounting Division that handles cash all exchange documents. Something went wrong in one of those steps.

 ”So please handle this carefully.”

”I understand. Dietlinde, you were the one who did all of this, weren’t you?”

You really don’t get it at all! The way you’re asking is absurd.

This cannot be ignored. The conversation is proceeding under the assumption that Dietlinde is the culprit.

”Randolph Department Head, as I’ve already stated, this is a grave incident that concerns the Guild’s credibility. Questioning the parties involved should be done with caution. There isn’t enough evidence to definitively conclude that Dietlinde did this, is there?”

”Nn… I don’t need you to tell me that. Hey, Dietlinde—are you involved in this matter?”

”Haa… fuu… As I’ve stated many times, it wasn’t me. I haven’t been involved in any such misconduct.”

There’s no lie in Dietlinde’s words as she’s recovered.

Still, Randolph isn’t convinced, so the interrogation continues.

”Then do you have any idea who the culprit might be?”

”I don’t know who the culprit is. But… no, never mind.”

 ”Come on, say it.”

”…Understood. Including Daisuke, every case I handled that turned problematic—Henriette was involved in all of them.”

”That’s not true! You’re just saying that because you hate me, Dietlinde-senpai! Randolph-sama, you believe me, don’t you?”

”Of course. Hey, Dietlinde—don’t spout nonsense. Henriette wouldn’t do something like that.”

Randolph is certain the culprit is Dietlinde, so he dismisses Henriette’s suspicions without hesitation.

Henriette knows this, so she doesn’t argue with Dietlinde—she relies on Randolph instead.

 This is all rigged.

”I don’t know if Henriette did it. I’m just stating the facts—that she was involved in all the problematic cases.”

”You still… What does Daisuke think? The documents were prepared by Dietlinde-senpai, so she’s suspicious, right?”

”At this stage, I can’t say for certain.”

If this continues, Dietlinde will be framed and fired.

It’s infuriating to let Randolph and Henriette have their way, and I have to do something—for Dietlinde’s sake.

The problem is there’s no evidence to clear Dietlinde’s name.

If there were evidence to overturn this, it might work.

”Randolph Department Head, if you check the documents for the request right now, perhaps something will become clear. Arguing without evidence will only waste time, I think. Or rather, Roswitha-sama… shouldn’t we call the Guild Master to arbitrate?”

”Tch… That won’t be necessary. I’ll handle this within my department. Henriette, bring the documents.”

 ”This seems like an overreaction…”

”Seeing the real thing will leave no room for excuses.”

 ”…That’s true. Understood.”

He clearly doesn’t want to call Roswitha, who’s like a thorn in his side.

Usually, he does as he pleases, and his superiors rarely reprimand him—so he wouldn’t want to rely on her.

Randolph glances at Dietlinde as he speaks, but for now, he’ll endure it.

I hope good evidence turns up.

 ===

”This level of scum is everywhere, isn’t it?”

”Our Knights’ Order has them too.”

 ”Ours?”

”N-no! I have nothing to do with the chaste and dignified beauty Knight Mercedes-chan!”
