Volume 10 Chapter 1 Spears, Loyalty, Love, and Meat
Edited by: Kanaa-senpai
Liese being born as a Gray Dragonewt was nothing more than a curse of fate.
However, her inability to use Fire Magic and Water Magic was due to her Title, [The Paradox of Dueling Dragons].
While her Fire and Water Magic were technically in a Sealed state, simply trying to wash the curse away with standard Healing Magic had done nothing to solve the problem.
I had scoured the library for a way to strip away a Title, but information was non-existent. It wasn’t the kind of thing a normal person could just undo.
Still, I figured a Skill that had hit its absolute level cap might be able to force the issue.
To that end, I had spent my points on a few promising Skills.
Since my Skill level finally hit the cap recently, I decided to take a shot at breaking Liese’s Seal.
”Alright, let’s give this a try,” I said.
”…? Yes,” Liese replied.
Liese looked like she didn’t quite grasp why I’d summoned her.
If I told her I might be able to lift the Seal, I’d just be getting her hopes up. If I failed, I’d end up crushing her spirits.
Success was a real possibility, but it wasn’t exactly a sure thing.
”Now… [Seal],” I said.
I tried to trigger the Skill on her Titles… but I felt no resistance.
I knew there was a chance it wouldn’t work, but it was still a letdown. It looked like Titles were simply immune to being Sealed themselves.
Liese twitched at the word “Seal,” her expression sharpening as she tried to stay composed, but she couldn’t hide her nerves.
Her tail was swaying back and forth behind her. She was definitely on edge.
She knew her own magic was locked, so she had likely realized exactly what I was trying to do for her.
”Um, Master…” Liese said.
”Wait a second. Let me try the other one. [Erase],” I said.
This was the “all-in-one” version of my deletion skills.
I’d realized I needed something more comprehensive after I picked up [Skill Erasure] for myself.
This time, the Skill caught. The Title was actually deleted.
However, when I used [Appraisal], the Titles were still sitting there as if nothing had happened.
Something was forcing them to respawn.
I had a pretty good guess why, but Liese would have gotten the system notification, so I decided to check with her.
”Liese, did you hear something just now?” I asked.
”Yes. I heard: ‘Innate Racial Title [The Paradox of Dueling Dragons] has been granted,’” Liese said.
”Just as I thought…” I said.
This Title was a biological anchor. Because her parents were a racial mismatch, Liese was born a Gray Dragonewt, and the Title was part of the package.
In other words, unless I changed her race entirely, that Title wasn’t going anywhere.
Naturally, changing someone’s race isn’t something you do over lunch. For most people, it’s flat-out impossible.
(This is a brutal set of rules…)
Technically, I could use [Metamorphosis] to shift a race temporarily, but that Skill only worked on the caster.
For that to work, I’d have to force Liese to learn the Skill herself, and even then, it would have a time limit.
Besides, Liese’s Class was a run-of-the-mill Lancer.
I didn’t think she’d have much of an aptitude for high-level transformation magic. It would cost a fortune in Skill points and her level would barely budge.
Yeah, that idea was a total bust.
”Sorry, Liese. It didn’t work out,” I said.
”Please, it is not a problem,” Liese replied.
Liese didn’t seem to mind the failure, but I wasn’t about to give up.
I’d just have to go back to the drawing board and start over with new Skills.
Even with my cheat-like [Private Power Generation], it would take dozens of days of… vigorous work… to hit the level cap again.
”Master, if I may be so bold, might I say a word?” Liese asked.
”Hm? That’s rare for you,” I said.
Liese wasn’t shy, exactly, but she stayed in her lane.
She stayed mindful of her position as a Slave and rarely voiced an opinion on anything that wasn’t related to meat.
If Liese actually had something to say, I was more than willing to listen.
”Of course. You can tell me whatever’s on your mind, whenever you want,” I said.
”…Thank you. Master, you bought me even though I am a Gray Dragonewt, and you have treated me with more kindness than any Slave could ask for.” Liese said.
”The meals alone are more luxurious than what the nobility enjoys. Every day is filled with wonder and joy for me.”
”You have listened to my selfish desire to get stronger and trained me yourself, and you even bought me brand-new equipment.”
”I usually keep my mouth shut because it is presumptuous for a Slave to offer an opinion, but I am grateful beyond what words can express.”
”Furthermore, while I cannot even begin to see the depths of Master’s [Ultimate Spear], my heart is filled with nothing but awe,” Liese said.
”O-oh. Right,” I said.
Liese let it all out in one breath, bowing her head deeply.
So much for “a word.” That was a full-on monologue that would have made Meta-san blush.
And there was no doubt about it—this was the “Meat Festival” effect. Her loyalty had gone through the roof because of all that protein.
She really does love meat a little too much.
”It is a dream come true that you care for me this much, but I cannot bear to see you waste any more of your time or effort on me. You are even spending your Skill points for my sake.” Liese said.
”Please, do not worry about me. Use your power for yourself,” Liese said.
Liese’s eyes were dead serious. She wasn’t just being polite; she meant every word.
She wasn’t like Clarissa-san or Dietlinde-san, but Liese still had zero self-esteem.
It was the “correct” way for a Slave to think, but I wanted her to live a little more freely.
Liese was only sixteen, after all.
In Japan, she’d be a high school girl spending all her energy on something stupid.
(Well, I’m not great with airheaded high school girls, but still…)
”I’ll think about it,” I said.
”Master…” Liese said.
”I get where you’re coming from, but are you trying to give me orders, Liese?” I asked.
”No! Never! I would never dream of such a thing!” Liese cried.
”I’m kidding. I appreciate the concern, Liese. But I’m doing this because I want to,” I said.
”I see…” Liese said.
”If it still bothers you, then just pay me back with your work with the spear. I’m expecting big things from you,” I said.
”…Yes!” Liese cried.
She’d been looking a little down because of the guilt, but the moment I told her I was counting on her, she gave me a radiant smile.
She usually kept a serious face, so the gap was actually pretty cute.
”I-If… if Master desires it, I have already prepared myself for my Nightly Duties…” Liese whispered.
”Wait, what? No, no. You don’t have to do that kind of ‘Slave obligation’ stuff. Don’t worry about it,” I said.
”Y-Yes…” Liese whispered.
Liese was turning bright red, which was adorable, but I wasn’t about to sleep with her just because she felt like she owed me.
We aren’t at that stage yet, and she’s not just some “fuck buddy.”
Regardless of what she said, I was going to break that Seal. It was my responsibility as the guy who bought her.
I wasn’t being conceited, but I was probably the only one in this world who could actually pull it off.
I’d failed this time, but I had other ideas. I just needed to pick up some different Skills.
I had a few candidates in mind, but I couldn’t just grab everything. I needed to do some more research.
Liese’s Seal was a priority, but my own Self-Buffs were just as important. Skill points don’t grow on trees.
The Hero Party could handle the Demon King for all I cared, but I still needed to get stronger.
Someday, I was going to get my revenge on that Dragon… well, I didn’t actually need to, but I at least wanted to be able to run away if I saw it again.
Now that Liese and the others had officially hit D-Rank, they could finally walk into the Fifth Floor without having to hide.
Up until now, they were just my “porters,” so they couldn’t take on requests or sell materials themselves.
Now, they could handle their own business.
D-Rank meant they were finally considered full-fledged Adventurers, and they could earn enough to live a decent life.
The risk of some random thug picking a fight with them would probably drop too, so I could breathe a little easier.
I’d been hoarding all the monster materials we’d gathered in my [Item Box], so I figured I’d let them sell off a fair amount so it looked like they were earning their keep.
Since it was their first day as D-Ranks, I decided to walk them to the Guild myself.
I wanted to see the staff’s reaction before I decided how much loot to let them dump.
”La-la-la~♪ Hum-de-dum~♪ Master~♡” Camilla sang.
”There, there,” I said.
”Ehehe~♡” Camilla giggled.
Camilla was clinging to my arm, rubbing her face against me like a cat.
She seemed thrilled that we could spend a little more time together than usual.
She had this dopey, blissful look on her face as I patted her head, but since we were outside the Dungeon, I figured it was fine.
”We’ve been to the Fifth Floor plenty of times, but it finally feels like we’re actually D-Rank. I’m still a little nervous,” Nicola said.
”You’ve got the skills, Nicola. You’ll be fine♪” Grete said.
Nicola and Grete were as close as ever. Both of them were so laid-back that just watching them was relaxing.
”I wonder what’s for dinner tonight~” Ilse asked.
”Got something specific in mind?” I asked.
”Hmm, let’s see… Definitely crab! I can’t get enough of that flavor. Is that okay, Daisuke?” Ilse asked.
”Sure thing,” I said.
”Hell yeah! …Oh, and bring some meat too,” Ilse added.
”Of course,” I said.
Ilse seemed to really love Karkinos crab. She requested it almost as often as meat.
The only reason she added the meat at the end was because Liese had given her a sharp look.
It felt a little forced, but Ilse loved meat anyway, so she wasn’t complaining.
By the way, I was the one who picked the menu, but Liese and the girls were the ones who actually did the cooking.
We were joking around as we walked into the Guild, but then a voice cut through the air.
”If you just admit you were involved, I might be inclined to keep the guards out of this for now,” a man said.
Just hearing that voice made my skin crawl. It was Department Head Randolph.
He was a small bear-type Beastman with a permanent five o’clock shadow—the kind of “useless middle-aged guy” who spent his whole day dodging work.
He was always picking fights with me for no reason.
Apparently, he had a thing for that fawning receptionist, Henriette, but Henriette was always playing nice with me.
She’d even tried to become my exclusive receptionist, which Randolph clearly didn’t appreciate.
Like I give a damn. I’d already turned her down.
”No. I am not the one who did that,” a woman replied.
I looked over and saw him cornering the cool receptionist, Dietlinde-san.
Henriette was standing right next to Randolph, pretending to cry.
I didn’t need to know the details to know this was a setup. Something bad was definitely going down.
”Master, she is…” Liese whispered.
”Yeah. It’s Dietlinde-san,” I said.
Liese and the others had met her a few times. I wasn’t sure if they were friends, but she definitely looked like she was in trouble.
If I could find a way to intervene, I was going to bail her out.
