Volume 2 Chapter 38 Harem

Edited by: Kanaa-senpai

I stepped off the carriage into the familiar square of Strock Village.

Some Kiridal soldiers had flooded in, and fighting had broken out even in this village, leaving part of Granny Ferris’s house scorched. The door to the lodging section of Granny Ferris’s house creaked open, and a young woman and an old man emerged from inside.

”It’s Larry,” the young woman said.

Impossible. It was Marie. Why was she here?

The old man beside her was the elder from Barsheni Village who had locked Rudy and me away—a face I would never forget. He was Marie’s grandfather.

Upon spotting me, the old man glared with a look of severe disapproval. What was I supposed to do?

Despite the tension, Marie rushed over and threw her arms around me.

 ”I missed you,” she chirped.

”No, no, wait a second—stop pressing your face against me and nuzzling in like that,” I whispered urgently, trying to push her back. “Your grandfather is glaring right at me, so please, cut it out.”

In the village square, Granny Ferris’s shop housed both the lodging and the apothecary, each with its own separate entrance.

The sliding door to the apothecary opened, and the person who stepped out was Sister-in-law!

She was holding the hand of a small girl. It was Alisa! My two-year-old Primary Wife—the daughter of the former family head, whom I had been forced to marry to ensure the survival of Getys House.

That wasn’t all. The woman who followed the girl, smiling as she chatted with Sister-in-law (Teressa), was missing a front tooth. It was Monica, Alisa’s mother and one of my wives. In other words, all three of my wives had just walked out of the apothecary together. The three of them had stepped out smiling, but their expressions froze the moment they noticed the unfamiliar carriage and the mounted horses. They watched as their husband, who had been away from home for so long, stood there being embraced by another woman.

”Marie, people are watching, so…” I tried to suggest.

”I don’t want to,” Marie retorted stubbornly.

I tried to lightly grab her shoulders to pull her away, but she just hugged me tighter.

”What’s wrong?” Alisa asked, looking up at Sister-in-law, who had stopped in her tracks.

”It’s nothing. Let’s go,” Sister-in-law said, her voice clipped.

Eh, eeeeehh! Wait, look, I understand that you’re angry, but ignoring me completely is a bit much, isn’t it?

”Um, what about Uncle?” Alisa asked.

”Alisa, we’re leaving,” Sister-in-law commanded, pulling Alisa’s hand with a bit more force than necessary. Monica gave her a nudge from behind.

”Aaaah, Teressa,” Marie called out, still clinging to me.

Stop it! No, please, just stop. Sister-in-law came to a halt. The look the usually gentle Sister-in-law turned toward us was a smile that made me freeze just watching it.

”Oh, my. Marie-san¹, it has been a long time,” Sister-in-law said. It looked like a smile, but her eyes were completely devoid of warmth.

”Truly! Were you doing well? I was told I should come and visit, so I came!” Marie replied.

”I came,” she says. And besides, what happened to the Kiridal dialect? Whenever Marie gets fired up from a fight, she drops the Kiridal dialect and uses our language instead. It’s terrifying. Please stop.

That was when it happened. I felt a shock as if a rock had flown into my head, and I collapsed on the spot. A sour, stinging smell flared deep in my nose. Then, I was grabbed by my long hair and yanked upright.

”Larry, you need to teach your women some manners,” Hans-niisan growled.

”You didn’t have to be so sudden,” I muttered.

”Release Larry-dono!” the bearded Commander of the guard unit shouted, leveling his spear at my brother.

”What the hell? Who are you people?” Hans-niisan demanded. Behind the Commander, the coachman and the vice-Commander, Ms. Anna, were flinching, though they had managed to draw their swords. This is bad. If I don’t de-escalate this immediately, these people are going to get hurt. To make matters worse, Alberto-san stepped out of the inn right behind Marie’s shitty grandfather.

”It’s okay! This man is my brother,” I shouted, standing on my own feet while my hair was still being held.

”Your brother…?” the Commander asked, confused.

”Yes, he is my older brother, and the Village Head of this village,” I confirmed. The Commander looked skeptical, but it was the truth.

”Who are these people?” Hans-niisan asked, finally letting go of my hair.

”They are my guards,” I replied.

”Guards? You mean this—” Hans-niisan began.

I grabbed my brother’s clothes and yanked him, signaling him to say no more. “They are with the Royal Army, so please, let’s not have any trouble,” I said, keeping my voice low but firm. Meanwhile, Alberto-san—standing over two meters tall and weighing well over a hundred kilos, built like a professional wrestler—was moving in to intimidate the Commander.

”Al, these guys? They’re apparently Larry’s guards,” Hans-niisan noted.

”Larry?” Alberto-san grunted. When he locked eyes with me, he ignored the Commanders entirely and strode over. “Yo. You look like you’re doing well.” He maintained his usual stone-faced expression, but his voice was genuinely warm.

Still, why couldn’t the Commander have stopped my brother before he hit me? Aren’t they supposed to be my guards? For that matter, they shouldn’t have let Marie get that close either. Get it together, you guys. Well, I suppose if they had tried to stop my brother, things might have turned even uglier. A bigger problem was the other three guards, including Helmunt. Why were they keeping so much distance? Absolutely useless.

”Larry-dono,” the Commander called out in a small voice, looking awkward. “We shall take our leave, then.”

”Aren’t you going to water the horses or anything?” I asked.

”Yes, well. As planned, we will return to pick you up by noon on the last day of the third week.”

Were they that uncomfortable? Did they just want to run away? I couldn’t very well force them to stay. “I see. Take care, then,” I said. I watched the Commanders scramble to depart. If I’d known it would cause this much of a minefield, I should have just had them drop me off at Getys House. Moving all this luggage is a pain.

”I’m going to go listen to the talk about the Waterwheel now. Larry, you’re coming too,” Hans-niisan ordered. Barsheni Village, Marie’s home, had little farmland, so they built Waterwheels to sell to other villages to make a living. Was that why the old man had come? I had feared he came all the way here to demand I take responsibility for getting her pregnant.

”Monica, sorry, but I’m borrowing Larry. I’ll return him by the end of the day,” Hans-niisan said.

”It can’t be helped,” Monica replied. “I’ll save squeezing him dry until after that.” The way Monica retorted to Hans-niisan didn’t sound like a joke. That was actually a little terrifying.

”Big Brother, you must not hit Larry,” Marie spoke up, glaring at him.

”Huh?” Hans-niisan reacted immediately. “Larry, what is this woman’s way of speaking? Even if she is the granddaughter of the Barsheni Village Chief, her attitude is inexcusable. She’s your woman, isn’t she?”

Of course, the backlash was going to come back to me. And seriously, why isn’t the grandfather saying anything? He’s the one who brought her here.

”You’re noisy,” Marie snapped at my brother again.

”What did you say?” Hans-niisan barked. Marie bared her fangs at my brother—a man known for being a ruffian not just in the neighboring village, but all the way in the town of Obernbach.

”In this stomach, I am carrying your nephew or niece,” Marie declared. “I am telling the child’s father’s brother to stop the violence, you see.”

At Marie’s words, my brother paused and turned toward Sister-in-law. “Teressa, is that true?”

 Why don’t you ask me!

”Well, it is true that we shared a room in the same dormitory as Larry at school, but the only thing I recall is talk about Waterwheels, I wonder,” Sister-in-law said coldly.

Now that I think about it, Sister-in-law had a sharp side to her, too. Maybe all women are like that. Hans-niisan glanced at me for a second, then immediately back to Marie’s grandfather. The old man, feeling the heat, finally spoke up.

”It’s the truth. During that war, we sheltered him in our village along with another boy, but once this guy did as he pleased with Marie and got her pregnant, he just ran off! And even though they were in the same school and shared the same room, he didn’t even have the decency to say a proper greeting!”

You shitty old man, spouting such blatant lies. “Sheltered us”? You threw us into a semi-underground prison the second we arrived! And you were the one who put me in a bedroom in the house, weren’t you? Marie was the one who came for a “Night-visit,” and even though she could have used Mana for contraception, Marie was the one who willingly became pregnant. And at school, Marie was the one who rolled into my room claiming she had no attendants left to look after her!

Besides, school ended with the Principal failing me in every subject and trying to have me killed. It took everything I had just to make it back to the village; I didn’t exactly have time for social calls. And why in the world am I the one who has to go offer greetings? Well, Marie had taken care of me in many ways at school. I’d complicated her social life, so I wouldn’t say she should come, but I certainly didn’t deserve to be scolded for it.

”Our village has little farmland, so we make a living by building Waterwheels,” the old man continued. “That is why I have to sell them. For now, I’ll turn a blind eye to the matter of this brat and my granddaughter.”

I glared back at the irresponsible old man, but my brother grabbed my head again. “I see. That was rude of us. Larry, bow your head,” Hans-niisan commanded.

I tried to resist, but it was a lost cause. My head was forced downward, bit by bit. “It’s not like that, Brother,” I managed to say.

”Shut up! It’s a fact that you got the old man’s granddaughter pregnant, isn’t it? So apologize,” Hans-niisan insisted. Between the crushing pressure of my brother’s hand and the pain in my neck, I felt like I was going to be sick.

 ”Apologize,” he repeated.

Defeated, I finally choked out, “I’m sorry.” The humiliation was total.

”Making me waste my time… And you, Marie-san, was it? You’re going to be married into this village, then?” Hans-niisan asked.

The shitty old man suddenly looked pathetic. That was because Marie had absolutely no intention of doing anything of the sort.

”No way,” Marie declared. “I’m going to make a living as a Mage while I raise this child. Besides, I’m going to teach the village children and make Barsheni Village even bigger! I’m the granddaughter of the Village Chief, you see!”

”Are you saying you’re going to live without a man, and grow the village on top of that?” Hans-niisan asked, stunned. Without a ‘House,’ it was a harsh, unforgiving world for a commoner. If she married into my family, at least her life would be secure. Marie was talking big—throwing away security to live alone, and growing a village on her own. It was no wonder my brother was shocked.

”Nico is saying that while she raises her child, she’s going to succeed her family and expand the paper shop, so I can’t lose either, you see!” Marie added.

At those words, both my brother and Sister-in-law were speechless. They seemed to know Nico was pregnant, but the fact that she wouldn’t be returning to the village as a bride was clearly news to them.

”Larry, is this true?” Hans-niisan demanded. He wasn’t asking about her being pregnant with my child; he was confirming she wasn’t going to be joining my household.

”Yeah. She told me herself, quite suddenly,” I replied. “Said she’d be returning to her family home by the end of April.”

”Well, as for me,” Marie chimed in, “I’m going to spend the next two—no, three years—living a sweeeet life with Larry in the Royal Capital! I want to have three children, too, you see!”

Marie just had to say something unnecessary at the end.

”If it’s the Royal Capital,” my brother asked, “what will you do about school?”

”We can talk about that later…” I muttered, shifting uncomfortably. Somehow, the situation just kept heading in a bad direction.

”He’s going to the Magic Academy,” a voice interjected firmly.

”How can something so stupid happen?” my brother barked back, slamming a hand on the table. “Speaking of the Magic Academy, is it another recommendation from the King or something?”

”I am going to the Royal Capital to take care of Larry,” my sister-in-law announced suddenly.

Even she had started saying something strange.

”Stop it!” I snapped, finally losing my temper. “If we start talking about this, it won’t end in an hour. I’ll talk about it properly later.”

Without thinking, I had ended up raising my voice.

* * *

When I entered my parents’ house, the village elders, starting with Granny Ferris, and my wives were already gathered around the large table on the first floor. For now, I greeted everyone all around, sat in the lowest seat, and listened to the old man’s talk about the waterwheel.

The installation location was on the dry riverbed slightly upstream of the bridge, past Granny Ferris and Daniel-san’s blacksmith workshop, where they would pile up earth. They said the irrigation channel flowing in front of the Getys House would draw water from the intake of the Rhodes River. They planned to run that water along the river using a flume to turn an overshot waterwheel.

An overshot waterwheel is one that turns by the weight of the water, just like the waterwheels often seen creating an atmosphere at soba shops in Japan. According to what the old man said, there are also undershot waterwheels that are moved by the flow of the river, but with the water volume here it was impossible, and the efficiency was poor.

There were no particular problems with the location or the type of waterwheel, but a debate arose over what it would be used for. My sister-in-law and the other women who introduced the waterwheel seemed to have thought only of using it for milling flour, but it looked like Hans intended to use it for processing wool.

In contrast to my brother, who intended to add value through wool processing to save money and pay for the waterwheel, the women raised their voices, saying they wanted to be liberated from two hours of daily mortar grinding and threshing.

”Well, for the first one, using it for flour milling and threshing is generally the standard way,” the old man stated, settling the dispute.

With the old man’s words, it became a victory for the women, but when everyone heard that the cost for just the shed was one hundred and twenty gold coins, the room fell dead silent.

Furthermore, according to what the old man said, the market rate in Kiridal was for the manorial lord to put up the money for the waterwheel and collect one-sixteenth of the ground grain as a usage fee. In some places, they even banned flour milling using stone mortars at home.

It seemed the waterwheel required periodic inspections and replacement once every few years, and that cost could not be ignored. Moreover, because the weight decreased when milling flour, dissatisfaction tended to arise, making its operation very difficult.

How to raise the money for purchase and maintenance, and who would manage it, became a fierce source of argument.

”Just saying whatever the hell they want,” Hans grumbled under his breath.

Well, that’s probably how it goes. The meeting dragged on, the talk of my departure for the Royal Capital was shelved, and the Elders’ Council for that day came to a close. Everyone left exhausted, with few words.

For the time being, it was decided to order a waterwheel shed for Barsheni Village with two threshing mortars and one flour milling mortar, including the construction of the water channel. Just as estimated, it would come to one hundred and fifty gold coins.

”There’s not enough money at all,” Hans said, turning a sharp glare toward me. “Return the five gold coins I gave you as a parting gift.”

My older brother had started saying something outrageous.

”I don’t have that kind of money anymore,” I replied flatly.

”You bastard, did you play around that much in the Willow District?”

”Yeah, I went to a place where the initiation fee alone was one gold coin.”

”You idiot!” Hans shouted. “Learning to play around without knowing your place! Either way, we’re going to have you take on at least thirty gold coins for your share of the waterwheel cost. Whether you go to the Royal Capital or whatever you do, it doesn’t matter.”

Saying so, Hans cooled down slightly and handed me a mug filled with ale.

”We’ll hear the talk about going to the Royal Capital tomorrow,” he continued, “but what are you going to do about that woman?”

It seemed “that woman” referred to Marie.

”There’s nothing to do but let her do as she likes,” I sighed. “She’s not the kind of woman who will listen to anything I say.”

”I guess so. Well, choose the women you embrace.”

”But, she looks like that, but she has her good points too.”

”You do like strong-willed women, after all,” Hans chuckled.

I was told something outrageous, but unable to deny it, we toasted. After we chugged down the ale, I left my parents’ house.

* * *

My sister-in-law and I carried the luggage and walked along the road beside the irrigation channel, relying on the dim light of a poor lamp.

 ”I’m sorry,” she apologized quietly.

 ”For what?” I asked.

”Getting stubborn because of Marie-san’s words.”

”I don’t mind,” I said, slowing my pace. “More importantly, I can’t take you to the Royal Capital.”

I tried to persuade her, explaining the dangers involved.

”In fact, I was almost killed.”

She made a face as if to say no way, but it was the truth. When I explained that was the reason guards—though unreliable—had been attached to me, she finally seemed to believe it.

”Ah, it’s heavy,” I muttered, placing the bags of luggage and souvenirs on the ground.

”I’ll carry half,” she said, reaching out.

When I grasped her hand, the light of the poor lamp wavered. Drawing her close, I met no resistance. When our lips met, she immediately accepted my tongue, and we lost ourselves in each other.

The scent of her, which I hadn’t smelled in a long time, caused my excitement to rise rapidly.

”Everyone is waiting, so…” she whispered weakly, but the words did not register with me.

Stepping off the road, we entered Bours-san’s apple orchard. Hugging her from behind, I slid my hand into her clothes. It was April, but the nights were still cold; wrapping my hand around the warm fullness of her breast felt exceptionally good.

Perhaps partly due to the cold, her n**ples were already hard, and when I pinched them, she reached her hand backward to touch me. We were both getting excited, but I couldn’t push her down onto the damp ground. However, I couldn’t endure waiting either.

I turned her toward an apple tree, making her place her hands against the trunk. I rolled up her skirt, meeting no resistance. Her white skin emerged in the darkness, and I slowly inserted myself.

Perhaps because it had been a while, it felt a little tight. As I began to move, she let out quiet, hesitant voices matching my rhythm.

”No, I can’t stand up…” she panted, appealing as if seeking support.

Knowing that getting her clothes dirty would cause trouble later, I desperately held her buttocks to support her weight.

I recalled hearing that it wasn’t good to release inside while she was pregnant with children.

”The end… with the mouth,” I managed to say.

 ”Yeah,” she murmured in response.

It was a short exchange, but consent was obtained. Her breathing grew rough as she moved against me. As the tension reached its peak, I pulled out smoothly just before the moment, and she knelt down, opening her mouth wide.

After a few strokes, I inserted into her warm oral cavity. Holding her small head with both hands, a wave of intense pleasure rose from my feet, leaving my spine trembling as I finished.

* * *

”You’re late. Alisa has already gone to sleep,” Monica announced as we entered.

When we stepped into the Getys House, everyone except Alisa was there to welcome us. Among them stood two young girls.

Monica looked closer and frowned. “Teressa, what’s wrong? Your knees are dirty.”

”I just… stumbled a bit over there,” Teressa replied, looking away nervously.

”Hmm,” Monica murmured suspiciously, “you didn’t steal a march on us or anything, right?”

 Monica’s intuition worked surprisingly well.

Trying to shift the tension, I quickly diverted the topic. “Those children are the new girls, right?”

”Yes,” Monica answered, taking the bait. “The older one is Rena, twelve years old. Her younger sister is ten-year-old Emmy.”

I had vague memories of seeing both of them; Rena was two years younger than me and Emmy was four years younger. Their ages were close, but I had no memory of playing together, likely because they had worked as maids from an early age.

”I’m Larry. Nice to meet you,” I said to them.

Compared to the younger sister, the older sister had a more cheerful demeanor, though she still seemed a little gloomy, perhaps due to her early life as a servant. Both had short bronze hair and eyes of the same color. If their family hadn’t been wiped out by the plague, they would be at an age where they would just be playing normally.

”As for Rena, Father had already laid hands on her, so she’s not a virgin,” Monica proposed casually while helping me take off my coat, “but Emmy hasn’t been touched yet. Will you get it over with during this holiday?”

She spoke without any sense of doing wrong. I’m not a lolicon, though, I thought to myself.

”Even if they get violated by the men of the village, they can’t complain since they’re maids,” Monica continued logically. “It’s fine, her period has already started.”

Just because she has her period doesn’t mean it’s okay, I thought. It’s a crime. Inside my mind, at least.

Monica turned directly to the girl. “Emmy, you’d prefer the master for your first time too, right?”

”Yeah,” Emmy replied without hesitation, looking up at me. “This master looks kind.”

“This” master? I caught the phrasing.

”Ah, it seems she was watching her older sister Rena’s first time,” Monica explained offhandedly.

In front of her younger sister’s eyes? What kind of first experience did she have? I thought bitterly of my family. Deceased Father, that’s exactly why you died early.

”Is that so? Hahaha,” I laughed nervously, trying to excuse myself. “I’m tired today, so can I go to sleep now?”

”Do you think you can do such a thing?” Monica replied with a sharp look.

There was a fierce spirit in Monica’s words that could not be disobeyed.

”Dear, please heat up the bath,” Teressa called out from the hallway. “The water is already in.”

”Oh, where is Niko?” I asked, looking around for the manservant I brought from my parents’ house.

”Showing consideration, he is sleeping on the second floor of the stable,” Monica answered.

I see, I thought. Next time, I’ll tell him he doesn’t need to show so much consideration.

* * *

In the bathroom, the water had been heated using a Fireball spell. Gathered inside were females ranging from ten years old to thirty-five: ten-year-old virgin Emmy; twelve-year-old Rena, a flat-chested girl with prior experience; fifteen-year-old Monica, who had given birth to twins; slender Yutia, who suffered from dystonia; nineteen-year-old Teressa, currently four months pregnant; twenty-four-year-old Sandra with her voluptuous body; and thirty-five-year-old Lili, who possessed an exceptionally large bust.

Their naked bodies entered my field of vision generously within the cramped, steam-filled room. Moving caused skin to brush against skin. Here, reaching out to touch or embrace wouldn’t result in cries of harassment; instead, they actively pressed themselves against me. There were no laws or authorities to intervene.

The harem environment I had idealized in my youth was fully realized in this new life. Yet, experiencing the reality brought a different realization. I began to understand that the fantasy of a harem missed the actual complications of human demand. My imagination had only extended to the act of drawing women close, failing to anticipate the emotional and physical maintenance required afterward.

The unspoken expectations of the women seemed to echo around me:

“Did you only draw me close?”

“Are you satisfied just by touching her?”

“Why do you choose the other girls over me?”

“I want to be satisfied too!”

I had never factored in the collective weight of their desires. I found myself wondering how traditional rulers or those with vast households managed to cope with the sheer exhaustion of it.
