Volume 2 Chapter 37 Reunion
Edited by: Kanaa-senpai
Escorted by a truly ragtag bunch, I departed from a Royal Army station in the Arrens Barony, aiming for the health resort of Bad Varfen.
I did not even know where the place was, but since I was heading home to Strock Village by way of that resort from Seiren Village, I assumed I must have been heading south from there.
The party began to descend along the Danube River.
Well, southeast. It was a total guess, but it did not seem wrong.
However, if I kept going like this, I would return to the territorial capital, Besanburg.
Even so, I wondered if this carriage had been rented from civilians; it was incredibly dilapidated.
The ride was absolutely miserable.
Even though we were barely moving, it rattled with such a racket, and I was occasionally jolted so hard that my waist lifted right off the seat. The golems placed next to me slid back and forth as if they were alive.
The carriage pulled by Carpaccio back at my parents’ house had far less swaying than this.
My attendant, Private Anna, who was sitting diagonally in front of me, had a face that only grew more severe every time we hit a massive jolt.
It was definitely not the right atmosphere for a chat.
”Break! Stop!”
At the Commander’s signal, we entered our umpteenth break.
”May I get out?”
When I called out to Private Anna, she answered, “Yes,” and got out before me.
As I followed her, a light rain was falling outside.
Although it was April, it was still a region where it would not have been strange for it to snow.
Steam was rising from the horses’ backs.
”Sorry about the rattletrap carriage. You must be tired, so please take a rest over there.”
When I looked at where the bearded Commander was pointing, there was a waiting area that looked like a rural bus stop, enclosed by a roof and partitions to block the rain and wind from the sides and back.
”Thank you.”
I did not go there immediately, instead turning my gaze toward the Danube River.
Then, I saw a town blurred by rain on the opposite bank in our direction of travel.
It was the familiar territorial capital, Besanburg. Although it could not be seen from there, the Magic School was on the plateau visible to the front right, and Nico should still have been working at the laundry next to the Dining Hall.
When I thought of that, a wave of loneliness welled up inside me.
It had only been a few days since I left, but I was no longer a resident there.
I had been caught up in all sorts of things, and a nameless emotion assaulted me.
When I looked back, the horses of the two-horse carriage were shaking their bodies from their necks, flicking away the rain.
”You guys are cold too, aren’t you?”
I stroked their faces and used the dirty hand towel next to the brush hanging from the yoke that secured the horses to the carriage to wipe the wet backs of the horses.
”Larry-dono, please stop that. That’s their job.”
Next to Private Anna, who had gone into the bushes to vomit, five soldiers were gathered and doing something.
”Hey, what are you doing there?”
”We can’t get a fire started.”
”Isn’t that the assistant coachman’s job? The rest of you, hurry up and wipe the horses’ backs. It’s a long journey today. Give them water and feed, too. Hurry up! The clouds are thick; the rain might get stronger. Apply hoof oil too, understood?”
The young men replied with a drawn-out, “Yeee-s,” with faces that screamed, How annoying.
”Shall I start the fire?”
I offered to show them by making a Fireball, but I was refused.
”This mission is training for them, too.”
The bearded Commander—I had thought he was unreliable, but he seemed to be trying quite hard.
Since I had gone to the trouble, I headed toward the three-sided enclosed rest area, but the tallest soldier among them, a man I believed was named Helmund, bumped into me, his leather armor clattering noisily.
”If you can make fire, do it already! We got scolded because of you, you clumsy bastard.”
He muttered this as he walked away.
People like this existed in every era and every world.
Well, it was what it was.
The rest area used thick pillars and was built more sturdily than it looked. Surprisingly, there was a Shinto altar at the upper center.
This meant it had been built by a Shinto Old Master; they traveled all over the country.
They even came to remote places like Strock Village.
When I looked at the altar, two doll-like figures made of pottery were placed on the left and right.
Foxes?
They were pottery, and although they were not painted white, they were shaped like foxes with long, narrow faces and pointed ears, no matter how I looked at them.
”Inari-san?”
In that case, I should at least clap my hands and pray for peace and safety.
Feeling nostalgic, I properly performed two bows, two claps, and one bow.
”Is Larry-dono Shinto?”
The bearded Commander asked.
”Not exactly, but I heard that this was what one did.”
I replied vaguely.
”Heh, seeing you do it, it looks like you know your stuff. Two bows, clapping your hands pan-pan, and one more bow—so that’s the ritual, huh?”
”That’s right. It is called two bows, two claps, one bow.”
I accidentally answered earnestly.
”You’re very knowledgeable. Shinto people build these kinds of rest areas whenever they find a place where water springs up. Besides, there’s usually a board behind them, and you can close the front with it to stay the night. Well, the Old Master probably builds them for his own use, but we use them when we rest like this, too. I guess I have to thank the Shinto god with those two bows, two claps, and one bow, too.”
The bearded Commander imitated me, bowing twice, clapping his hands twice, and then bowing once more.
”Is this okay?”
”That is more than enough. Besides, you don’t have to push yourself; if you’re a soldier, I think a salute is fine.”
”Heh, Shinto gods are easy-going, aren’t they? My family belongs to the Universal Church, so I have to cross myself and put my gratitude into words.”
Talking about that, we both sat under the altar.
”My young ones were rude earlier.”
”Were you watching?”
I assumed he meant the tall soldier who had bumped into me and complained.
”They have been in the Army for less than half a year.”
”Is that so? Based on their age, I thought they had graduated from the Military Academy.”
According to the Commander, he and Private Anna were the only ones in this unit who had graduated from school.
Private Anna, perhaps feeling a bit better after finishing vomiting, was giving instructions to those young soldiers.
”They were just hanging around without doing any real work, so their parents told them to join, and they joined reluctantly. They still need a lot more training.”
I wished they would ask Bours-san; I had been trained quite a bit in one week.
”Since the war with Kiridal, the Army has been in the middle of reorganizing, so we can’t afford to take care of their education.”
”Come to think of it, you were called the Army, weren’t you? Not the Royal Army.”
”That’s right. Marquis Sabaski strongly desires to build a navy, so he said, ‘Call yourselves the Army’ to separate us. That’s not all; the Army also separated its units into defense and offense.”
Marquis Sabaski and the navy.
I was sure this was a response to the New Continent.
On Earth, the Age of Discovery had begun after the Middle Ages.
Since sea trade in this world involved importing cotton, perhaps it had already begun.
No, I had not heard of other countries reaching the New Continent, and there was no sign of an industrial revolution occurring.
Perhaps the Fourth Sage wanted to seize hegemony for Schweilitz ahead of any other country.
”Um, could you tell me your affiliation again?”
”I belong to the 307th Battalion of the Central Area Army.”
”Formally, isn’t it the 307th Battalion of the Central Area Command?”
”You are very knowledgeable. I thought it was redundant to say ‘unit’ twice, so I omitted it.”
As I thought, it was just like the Self-Defense Forces.
”Does that mean your specialty is defensive missions?”
”Yes, we are tasked with the defense of the northern coastal region and the Jutland region, centered on the Holstein territory. We, the 307th Battalion, are active mainly in the defense between the western part of Jutland and the Nitrol principalities.”
”From that far away?”
”Well, it’s the most idle place in the old Royal Army.”
I suspected that it would take two weeks by carriage from their post to the Royal Capital.
The bearded Commander scratched his head, looking embarrassed, but it seemed to be about as far as Tokyo to Okayama.
Moreover, they had come to the Royal Capital from the Central Area Command headquarters to assist a liaison office, but had suddenly been dragged into acting as my escort.
I doubted they knew the lay of the land there, and I wondered if there had really been no one else available.
”I am terribly sorry. To have people from so far away escorting me…”
”Not at all, not at all. For us, it’s like sightseeing.”
”But are you sure? Monsters will become active here from now on.”
In early spring, Al-miraj and the Red-Eyed Wolves that chased them moved to the southern mountains, and goblins and orcs also moved around more in spring; they did not come down to the villages, but they were active in the mountains.
”It should be fine. We have goblins and orcs in our area, too, as well as Giant Magic Rats and Bear-Forest-Cats.”
A Giant Magic Rat was a magic rat about the size of a dog, and small magic rats sometimes appeared near the village’s dish basins.
Was a Bear-Forest-Cat something like a panda, given the name? It was a monster I had never heard of.
Maybe it climbed trees and ate branches. Judging by the name, it sounded big.
It seemed that if the location was different, the monsters were different even within the same country.
”I don’t suppose—does the base of the Central Area Command, or rather the place where the headquarters is, happen to be called Itami?”
”You are well-informed. It is a place like a newly built garrison on the coast of the Jutland Peninsula near the Holstein territory. I didn’t think the place name Itami had spread that much yet.”
As expected, it had definitely been named by Marquis Sabaski.
The military reorganization was also likely that old man’s meddling.
”As expected of a relative of Lieutenant Louise.”
Me, a relative of Louise?
He praised her, saying that Lieutenant Louise was the daughter of the prestigious Roman Baron of the Jutland Peninsula, and that she had become the Deputy Commander of the Golems Battalion due to her peerless Mana talent.
Well, since she seemed to be a famous person, rumors must have taken on a life of their own.
I decided to leave it at that, neither denying nor affirming it.
”Her appearance is unfortunate, so she also had the nickname ‘Virgin Red Ogre,’ but I wonder if she has found a partner; she is of a good age, isn’t she?”
This Commander had a surprisingly loose tongue.
I hoped it would not cost him his life.
”Commander, horse care is finished. Can we rest now too?”
”Ah, good work.”
When we invaded Kiridal, we had almost no breaks, but places that were idle were quite lax, weren’t they?
”So, will you take a break in that town?”
The young man acting as the coachman pointed to the territorial capital.
”No, we are passing through there.”
”Ehh, we came this far, but we don’t get to see that town?”
I would have liked to stop by, but my life would have been in danger if there had been remnants there.
”Instead, tonight you can stay at the military R&R facility. Don’t complain.”
”How boring.”
Honestly, I began to worry whether these people were really part of the Royal Army; they were that lax.
”So, how much longer until we reach this guy’s house?”
Finally, I was being called “this guy.”
”Let me see.”
You should really scold your subordinate for calling the person they were guarding “this guy.”
That thought did not seem to reach them, as they pulled a map from a bag and spread it out.
”Let me see. For tonight’s lodging, we’re currently one step shy of Besanburg, right around here. From the city, it’s thirty kilometers west along the Inn River, then about two kilometers north.”
”Then we should arrive around the evening, right?”
We had left the station right after eating, so if nothing went wrong, we should have made it by evening.
”We’ll be able to get with women, right?”
”It’s been a life of abstinence at the garrison. We’re reaching our limit.”
”I heard from folks in other squads that the women at that R&R facility are cheap.”
Weren’t these guys supposed to be curious about where my house was?
Well, I supposed it was inevitable that when men gathered, the conversation turned this way.
”What’s the price, anyway?”
”Don’t let the VIP join the conversation!”
”No, no, I’m curious, aren’t you?”
”Aren’t you a local? You should know this stuff.”
Finally, I was being called “you.”
The young coachman who had started it all said it started from five silver coins.
”Isn’t that too cheap? What if a monster shows up?”
They got excited over talk like that, but the break ended with a cough from Ms. Anna, who was standing a little distance away.
Looking at this party again, the Commander and the tall man I had bumped into were riding at the head.
The carriage held the coachman and his assistant, with Ms. Anna inside.
Two people were mounted in the rear guard, with one spare horse.
Everyone was armed with spears, but their handling was so sloppy that Bours-san would likely have whipped their backsides with a bow.
”Um, Deputy Commander, if you’re not good with carriages, maybe you should ride the spare horse. I’m fine on my own.”
Since there were things I hated watching, I suggested it. The Commander must have granted permission because she was soon smiling on horseback.
Looking at the opposite shore at the checkpoint entering the city, as the Lieutenant Colonel had said, there were traces of a fire in a corner of town.
It was around that fabric shop.
When I thought about it, it was a terrifying story.
The road was paved entering the city, but the moment I passed through Willow District and the houses vanished, the path turned brutal.
I was shaken by the relentless vibration, and it was nearly dark by the time we reached the facility.
There was a town lit by neon lights bordering the military installation, and I entered the facility as if crossing through the town.
The Commander had an exchange at the gate for a while, and once the carriage entered the grounds, it stopped in front of the tallest and largest building among the many structures.
”All right, Larry-dono, get out here.”
The carriage dropped Ms. Anna and me off and headed elsewhere.
Inside the building, a hall was brightened by Luminous Magic Iron.
Men in military uniforms and casual gear were split into various groups, sitting at round tables, drinking and chatting with snacks in front of them.
In the corner of the hall, there was a reception desk. Ms. Anna hurried over and began talking to a gentleman there.
The gentleman kept looking my way, and I had the feeling the people in the hall were watching me, too.
After a short wait, I was finally told to register.
There was a column for the guest and attendant, and Ms. Anna signed on as the attendant.
”Hey, only noncommissioned officers and above or Military Academy students can stay here.”
A hand fell on my shoulder, and I was told something unpleasant.
I turned to see a tall man wearing a gray, high-collared student uniform.
”Edmond-san!?”
”It really is Larry. You were really alive.”
I had not seen him since we parted just before Owens Village, after being attacked by Isabella and her Weasels of Bohemia while returning from Garao Village during the Vod Fortress battle.
It had been five months.
I was so moved that I hugged Edmond-san without thinking. Looking back, that was pretty embarrassing.
The gray uniform he wore was for the Military Academy.
As we talked, people in the same uniform gathered around, and Edmond-san proudly explained my situation to them.
”Wait, you’re wearing a Magic School uniform, right? Why are you here?”
Only noncommissioned officers and above or Military Academy students could stay. I did not fit into the category Edmond-san had mentioned earlier.
”I’m technically military-affiliated, treated as a corporal.”
”What the hell is that?”
Some of the people who had gathered looked puzzled.
Then, Ms. Anna brought over a paper she had borrowed from the gentleman at the counter.
”A letter of introduction?”
Edmond-san took the paper and read it in silence.
”Hey, Lieutenant Colonel Helbert is practically the top of the Information Bureau, right? Why do you have a letter of introduction from such a dangerous guy?”
As I thought, he really was a dangerous person.
”If you’re a corporal equivalent, why is Larry, in a Magic School uniform, ranked higher than us? That’s ridiculous.”
Well, I could see why they would be annoyed.
”Ah, I know this guy. Larry-Fee-Getys, right? The one who had a duel trial with Marquis Harritz’s grandson at the Audience.”
”That grandson’s parent is Colonel Eric, isn’t it? If you say the wrong thing, you’ll be expelled.”
”But I heard he beat Major Sonya, the Golems Battalion Commander, who stood as a proxy for the duel.”
My personal information was bubbling up from everywhere.
Moreover, more people were gathering.
”Isn’t that a Treasure Sword?”
They caught sight of the Viscount’s Treasure Sword peeking out from my robe.
”Let me see it for a second.”
”No, it’s not that big of a deal, really.”
I refused, but several hands reached out, and it was snatched away.
”This is Viscount Bizan’s Treasure Sword.”
”Never mind that, look at this tag.”
”What’s this? A membership card for Wolsfest?”
”A shop that refuses first-timers and costs one hundred thousand yen just for the initiation fee?”
Somehow, staying there any longer felt dangerous in more ways than one.
”Guest, allow me to guide you to your room.”
The gentleman from earlier arrived, rescuing us from the crowd.
He even reclaimed the Treasure Sword.
That was the professional work of someone who could read a person’s rhythm.
The room I was led to was on the third floor; it was almost identical to a room in the Magic School dormitory, but it came with a balcony.
”Please take this set to the hot spring.”
He pointed to a basket containing towels and a bathrobe.
”Attendant, please enjoy the hot spring as well.”
The meals, he said, were free at the hall downstairs.
The military was amazing.
I spent two nights and three days there.
I was able to recuperate properly.
The hot spring was a natural, free-flowing source.
The tub was a deep, square, large pool made of stone.
There was no smell of sulfur, but since my skin felt smooth, I suspected it was a simple alkaline spring.
I enjoyed a long, comfortable soak.
As for Edmond-san, he said he was there for optional remedial training while the school was on break.
Mornings were for academic studies, afternoons for land clearing and training.
His previously lazy body looked toned, and he seemed to have gained some real muscle.
”But how did you get into the Military Academy?”
”I’m surprised myself. I think serving in the Militia really helped.”
You did not get that kind of experience easily.
However, he said it had been hell after getting in.
Even then, he could keep up with the running drills, but at first, he had been hopeless and had been punished by being whipped until his backside turned red every time.
”I’m surprised your rear end held up. I bet I could give you a run for your money now.”
Yeah, there was no way a Mage candidate could beat a military candidate whose day job was manual labor in terms of raw physical strength.
He said he would return home once he finished another two weeks there.
”When I get back to the village, I’ll pass the word along.”
”Yeah, please do. So, how long are you staying in the village, Larry?”
I told him until the end of the third week of April.
”What, you have re-exams?”
It seemed the advancement system was similar to the Magic School.
To my surprise, Edmond-san boasted that he had not failed a single exam.
If I had been left to my own devices, I would have been in re-exams for every subject, but it was different for me.
”I’ve decided to transfer to the Magic Academy. I’m going early to prepare.”
”Haaaah? I’ve never heard of such a thing. A transfer from Magic School to the Magic Academy.”
”It’s true, but there are some things I can’t talk about.”
”Well, I guess so. It’s like transferring from a military academy to the Military Academy. It’s not something that happens normally.”
There were too many exceptions, and in the end, he sensed my situation and stopped asking.
By the way, regarding the bankbook entry, they refused me there, saying they only handled information for military personnel and Academy students, and although “military-affiliated” was military-related, they had no access to my records.
”You can get it done in Besanburg. It’s about an hour and a half by horse.”
The receptionist was kind enough to tell me, but that was out of the question, so I thanked her and left.
Also, about the women.
Edmond-san warned me that the women available there were generally poor quality, and the cheap shops were places where you could not get a “change” even if things went south, so I stuck to self-maintenance.
My escorts, on the other hand, went in blind, and it seemed they spent time with some… unforgettable people.
In particular, the tall Helmund, who had bumped into me, lamented that a woman who looked like a Bear-Forest-Cat had targeted him, and that he had been pushed down the moment she entered the room.
He said he would never go back.
At the resort, Bad Varfen, I was able to buy souvenirs and magic tools with the gold coin I had borrowed from the Lieutenant Colonel.
I took a good rest and departed.
From there, it took two days to reach the noble summer resort of Seiren Village.
After spending one night there, I passed through the checkpoint and returned to the nostalgic Strock Village without encountering any monsters.
I wanted to take the carriage directly to the Getys House, but the bearded Commander said they were heading to Obernbach or Linto next, so I got off at the plaza.
There, I could water the horses and buy fodder.
Granny Ferris’s house right in front of where I dismounted had been repaired, and the paint was completely refreshed.
As I was admiring how clean it looked, the inn door opened, and a young woman and an old man stepped out.
”It’s Larry.”
Eh, Marie?
And the old man next to her was the elder of Barsheni Village, the one who had imprisoned me and Rudy.
He was Marie’s grandfather.
He was glaring at me with a stern face for some reason.
