Volume 11 Chapter 16 Dietlinde’s Objective Evaluation
Edited by: Kanaa-senpai
Synopsis of the previous events: I beat up Goblins with a slime.
===
It was early November in the Hero Calendar.
Dietlinde, a receptionist at the Adventurer’s Guild, was applying to her superior, the department head, for approval of a quest she had accepted.
”Dietlinde, this is a quest to exterminate a horde of Goblins, but the request fee received seems rather high for that. What is the reason for this?” Pascal asked.
”Yes. Normally it would be around five silver coins,” Dietlinde replied. “But as described here, sighting reports from adventurers who went nearby on another quest clearly indicate that the population is large. Therefore, I judged there is a high possibility that a higher species is present, and set the request fee for this time at two gold coins.”
”I see, that is appropriate,” Pascal said.
Pascal, the new department head of the Quest Mediation Department, was satisfied with Dietlinde’s explanation and signed his approval.
He was a middle-aged man characterized by his beard, and although he was married, he was subtly popular.
He obeyed his superiors but did not flatter them more than necessary, making him an ideal boss by general standards.
There were other documents that Dietlinde had brought in, but they were all approved exactly as originally drafted without any particular problems.
The explanation and approval of cases was a matter-of-course interaction that had returned after the department head changed.
Except for Dietlinde, who was being harassed, decisions during the time of the former department head, Randolph, had been passed after he flipped through them and said either “Do as you like” or “Fine.”
Of course, it was just a formality, and he did not seriously check the contents.
Rather, because he disliked being disturbed, he would even tell her that explanations were unnecessary and to just leave them in the “unresolved” document tray.
Since it was easy in that sense, conversations such as “But it passed like this until now!” and “That cannot be used as a reference” had been repeated countless times between the new department head and the Black Gyaru Trio1.
On the other hand, because Randolph did not allow a deputy in his absence, approval from the department head was always necessary.
When he was absent due to “work” (a hobby he insisted was work), processing would stall, causing a significant amount of inconvenience.
In times of real emergency, Guild Master Roswitha would act as a deputy, so a major problem barely avoided occurring.
”Hmm… As always, Dietlinde’s work is good,” Pascal said.
”—Thank you very much,” Dietlinde replied.
”To think he was trying to fire such an excellent employee on false charges… The former department head, Randolph, really had no eye for talent,” Pascal muttered.
”……” Dietlinde remained silent.
Partly due to her background, Dietlinde had rarely been praised until now.
Roswitha evaluated Dietlinde highly, but she treated her strictly so as not to spoil her.
Therefore, she felt bewildered even when told she was “excellent.”
Furthermore, evaluations regarding others were not something she should speak about.
”Since it seems you do not quite realize it, I will have you listen for a bit. Please wait for a moment behind that screen over there,” Pascal said.
”Yes,” Dietlinde replied.
Having said that, Pascal called in the apprentice clerk in question.
It was Randolph, who had not hidden his displeasure ever since his demotion.
”Randolph, what happened to the Orc extermination matter that was brought in three days ago?” Pascal asked.
Randolph grimaced. “—Tsk. This time, the request is from a region where Orcs have rarely appeared until now… and because it is somewhat far away, we must set a reward that includes the extra time it takes to travel…”
”The addition to the reward was what I instructed, so there is no need to go out of your way to explain it to me. So, has the reward setting been finished?” Pascal asked.
”—Currently, I am in the middle of estimating the days of travel by comparing it with past cases,” Randolph replied.
”In short, it is not finished, is it?” Pascal asked directly.
”—It is not finished… yet,” Randolph muttered.
”Haa… Is that so?” Pascal sighed.
Although he was the former department head, Randolph had been demoted to an apprentice due to a scandal.
Before becoming department head, he was at the Guild headquarters, but because he was an elite academy graduate, he started with chief treatment and had subordinates from the very beginning.
He made his subordinates do all the work while he merely gave orders, and even if something was said from above, he blamed it all on his subordinates.
Thanks to that, only the skills favored by small villains, such as threatening, deceiving, and falsifying, had grown.
Because he was that kind of person, Randolph had never done Guild clerk work.
Since he had rarely traveled far, he was also unfamiliar with the geography of the country.
Because he had no interest in the work of the Guild, he did not remember the market prices.
In short, the knowledge and skills necessary for the job were close to non-existent.
”You, Randolph, should learn from Dietlinde,” Pascal said.
”Huh?” Randolph blurted out.
”Do you have any complaints?” Pascal asked.
”Ah, no… Why do I need to learn from that person… Dietlinde-san? She is a lowly, uneducated orphan… and there are other employees as well,” Randolph spat out.
”Evaluating someone based on such trivial matters is the height of foolishness. Objectively speaking, she is quite excellent,” Pascal stated.
”…Is that so?” Randolph muttered.
”It cannot be helped. To explain it in a way that even you can understand, her documents are arranged so that they are easy for the counterpart to read. The main points are clearly emphasized. The explanations are logical. She possesses relevant information such as the market prices for monsters and medicinal herbs, and has a grasp on the ability and personality of the adventurers. Her judgments based on those are correct. In addition, her handwriting is beautiful, so it is not a struggle to read. Do you have any counterarguments?” Pascal asked.
”……” Randolph glared silently.
”Being sullen is your own prerogative, but the points I just listed are exactly what you are completely unable to do. If you cannot become able to do at least one of them, your graduation from being an apprentice will not be recognized. Please show the pride of an academy graduate,” Pascal said.
”—Guh,” Randolph groaned.
He tried to argue back when told to learn from Dietlinde, whom he had bullied mercilessly during his time as department head, but the result was a crushing defeat.
Because all of Randolph’s small villain skills had been sealed, it ended right there once he was refuted logically.
Since he considered direct violence to be barbaric, he had barely raised his level, so he could not rely on that either.
Accordingly, the recent Randolph spent his days grinding his teeth in an environment that was the exact opposite of before.
Even so, he did not try to improve his skills to show them up, but merely escaped into cheap alcohol that he could somehow buy with his lowered salary.
Since the new department head, Pascal, also grasped those kinds of circumstances, he was giving up while thinking it seemed impossible even as he urged him to rouse himself.
”If it is not finished yet, that is all for our talk,” Pascal said.
”—Excuse me,” Randolph muttered as he left.
Pascal, having sent Randolph away, spoke with Dietlinde again.
”How was it? As he also admitted, that is strictly an objective evaluation,” Pascal said.
”…Thank you very much,” Dietlinde replied.
Because Dietlinde’s ability was high and her attitude was serious, her reputation among clients was not bad.
Though it was not particularly good either since she was unsociable.
By the way, her fellow receptionists were quite unique unit members.
The Black Gyaru Trio consisted of Gabriela, who lacked a bit of brains but was bright and had high communication skills; Ottilie, who lacked brains but was full of confidence; and Maaya, who was the best among the three but still lacked brains and played the role of the tsukkomi2.
The handsome twins, Arnold and Berthold, could be said to be reasonably excellent in terms of ability, but they were not very motivated.
Even so, they were popular as a source of healing for female adventurers.
”Now then, putting that aside. I hear you are finally moving out of the dormitory. I am sorry for making you clean up after Henriette,” Pascal said.
”No, it is something I brought up myself, so,” Dietlinde replied.
Henriette had become a criminal slave as compensation for fraud and other crimes.
Right now, she was probably having manners and etiquette strictly beaten into her under a slave trader.
It was Dietlinde herself who offered to clean up everything from Henriette’s work to her dormitory room.
She also provided guidance to the employee hired to replace Henriette.
Although she was not at fault at all in the incident, it was because she felt responsible for causing a stir within the Guild.
”That is finished as well, and from now on, you will be living under your lover as you wished, right?” Pascal asked.
”Yes, I will move tomorrow,” Dietlinde answered.
”I see. Please get along well with him,” Pascal said.
”Thank you very much,” Dietlinde replied.
Since it was not a black company, approval from a superior was unnecessary for living with a lover, but she had answered when asked for the reason for leaving the dormitory.
It was normal for Guild employees and adventurers to date, and one of Pascal’s wives was also an adventurer.
Because it would make it easier to request high-ranking adventurer Daisuke-san through Dietlinde, Pascal welcomed it as a Guild executive, and personally supported the excellent mid-level employee, Dietlinde.
Dietlinde, having finished her talk with Pascal, worked until the scheduled time and then set off on her way home.
* * *
Dietlinde came to Daisuke-san’s house to greet everyone.
Unluckily, the man himself was absent, but she exchanged greetings with the lovers who had cohabited earlier.
”Everyone, I look forward to working with you from tomorrow,” Dietlinde said.
”It is a bit early, but on behalf of Daisuke, I welcome you, Dietlinde,” Ines-san replied.
Even if there was no hierarchy among the lovers, there was an order.
The partner who became a lover later respected the number one lover, Ines-san, and she often greeted them on behalf of the group.
That was somewhat heavy-hearted for Ines-san, but she also felt happy realizing that she was Daisuke’s number one.
”Ines-san, and everyone else as well, please call me Diet,” Dietlinde requested.
”Is that alright?” Ines-san asked.
”Yes. Since I am a newcomer as ‘Daisuke-san’s lover,’ I would be happy if we could get along well from now on,” Dietlinde said.
Although she spoke flatly with eyes that could also look emotionless, Dietlinde was also internally looking forward to her new life.
”Diet, is that preparation… going smoothly?” Meta-san asked.
”Yes, Meta-san. Because you let me have a slime, it was completed without any problems,” Dietlinde replied.
”That is wonderful,” Meta-san smiled.
Meta-san, in her lady mode, smiled gently.
This was because Meta-san also taking an interest in the “service” that lay beyond Dietlinde’s “preparation.”
Slimes were kept in every house, but they occasionally split and multiplied.
It was normal to sell such surpluses to slime shops in the town or street, but because Daisuke’s Slajiro happened to split at the timing when Dietlinde wanted one, it had been provided.
Since Daisuke’s Slajiro was also a bit high-level, it could even serve as a minor guard.
Furthermore, due to this move, Meta-san became roommates with her because they were old acquaintances, and excluding Daisuke-san, they were the closest.
”Meta, what is this preparation?” Juliet-san asked, narrowing her eyes.
Meta-san replied smoothly, “It is not something to talk about at this stage. If Daisuke-sama likes it, I will tell everyone as well, so please wait for a while.”
”Daisuke likes it… By any chance, it isn’t something strange, is it?” Juliet-san questioned.
”I cannot say that everyone is doing it or liking it, but there are enthusiasts in some parts,” Meta-san explained.
”Is that so?” Juliet-san muttered.
”Yes. There is no mistake about it,” Meta-san confirmed.
Juliet-san directed a suspicious look, but Meta-san was completely unbothered.
Even Meta-san did not hate Juliet-san; rather, she looked upon her favorably, but her top priority was Daisuke-sama.
Though that did not necessarily mean it aligned with Daisuke’s true intentions.
There were three days left until Daisuke’s great regret.

Meta Tsedes: “Handsome twins! That has a nice ring to it!”
Narrator: “Is that so? It is a sensibility that I cannot understand, but…”
Meta Tsedes: “I have a flash of inspiration! If they are Guild clerks, they are acquaintances of yours, right, Narrator-san? Please introduce me!”
Narrator: “I do not mind.”
Meta Tsedes: “Is it really alright?! Yay!”
Narrator: “Because there is no particular reason to refuse. But is it alright with you?”
Meta Tsedes: “What is? Ah, are you minding that I, who am a source of information for Daisuke-san, might get married and retire from the Knights’ Order? Oh stop it, I won’t quit even if I get married!”
Narrator: “No, it is not about that. It is because they are loose with women and are also famous as the ‘pump and dump twins.’”
Meta Tsedes: “Ugh! There are no decent men!”

Summary:
Dietlinde transitions out of her guild dormitory duties following an official review from her competent new department head Pascal, who thoroughly breaks down her outstanding administrative qualities to humiliate the demoted, incompetent apprentice Randolph. She formally completes her moving preparation and coordinates directly with her fellow housemates inside Daisuke’s growing household. Meta drops mysterious hints concerning an eccentric slime-related service planned exclusively for their partner, leaving a suspicious Juliet deeply uneasy about the incoming domestic dynamic.
—
Trivia:
Randolph was an elite academy graduate who automatically received high organizational placement without acquiring basic frontline guild clerk experience.
Guild Master Roswitha purposefully maintains a very strict evaluation baseline for Dietlinde to ensure she remains level-headed and un-spoiled despite her innate administrative talent.
Henriette is currently undergoing severe disciplinary restructuring and etiquette training directly under a slave trader as compensation for past fraud.
Slajiro is noted as an unusually high-level slime, meaning its offshoot sub-entities possess sufficient situational defensive capacities to act as residential minor guards.
The minor text after-talk reveals that the guild’s popular handsome twins, Arnold and Berthold, are locally infamous for manipulating female adventurers in short-term relationships.
