Volume 2 Chapter 50 Cossack

Edited by: Kanaa-senpai

After the intercourse, the change in Kenze happened without waiting for the predicted one hour.

 ”My gut’s killin’ me.”

Without even time to savor the lingering effect of the s*x, as soon as she complained of a sudden change in her physical condition, she returned to the cage herself, straddled the jar that had been given earlier, and sat down.

”Are you about to give birth?”

When I asked, she frowned, placed her hand on her lower abdomen, and nodded.

 ”Ah.”

Kenze raised her voice while straining. From her crotch, mucus dripped down into the jar.

 ”Was it born?”

 ”Idiot, that’s just your fluids.”

 I see.

 ”Aaaah, it’s comin’ out.”

That voice from before? When I looked, this time, a pinkish gel-like thing wrapped in bubbles dropped from her crotch into the jar.

 ”Haa, haa.”

Kenze was breathing hard. Her face looked like she had accomplished it, and this time she sat down as if to hug the jar.

 ”Give me some hot water.”

It’s not as if she’s going to drink it herself, but I don’t really know, so I used Fireball to make the contents of the pitcher into hot water and put it into the cage.

 ”Thanks, I guess.”

Did Kenze thank me? She received the pitcher, then thrust her face into the jar and started sipping something with a slurp.

Maybe she’s taking the supernatant. Mine? Or the bubbles.

When that was finished, she added hot water to the jar and remained motionless while hugging it.

 ”Hey, did you fall asleep?”

Even when I called out, there was no reply. It’s surprisingly anticlimactic. Well, it’s fine, I have to do my own things.

Although I stayed up all night yesterday, I was impressed that this young body is energetic, but overconfidence is forbidden. I wrote letters to Sister-in-law, Henrietta-san, and also Marie and Nico, and went to sleep.

I woke up at dawn feeling a chill. Though it is about to become August, the summer here is cool. When it becomes early morning, I start to miss my blanket.

As I was looking for the blanket at my feet, Kenze inside the cage came into view. She was sleeping while hugging the jar, remaining completely naked.

Since it couldn’t be helped, I entered the cage and put the blanket on her shoulders.

”You’re supposed to be raisin’ a brat, so take care of your damn body a little.”

Even when I called out, she didn’t move. She had a somewhat happy sleeping face.

 ”Well, that’s fine, I suppose.”

The tension that had been hanging in the air until now dissipated. To the point of being astonishing, she had become full of openings. Is this what is called maternal instinct? The inside of the jar was dark and nothing could be seen.

If only she hadn’t said she would kill me.

 …

 ”Hey.”

 ”Five more minutes!”

 ”Hey, wake up.”

”What? Let me sleep a little longer, will ya?”

”I’m gonna take a dump right here if you don’t.”

Haaaah, aaaah. Since it couldn’t be helped, I tried expressing my dissatisfaction while yawning.

Last night, she was so quiet, but when morning came, she was sharp-tongued. Why do I have to be pushed around by this broad? Thinking that, I attached a chain to Kenze’s neck and took her to the men’s restroom.

When I went to the Dining Hall to have the morning progress meeting, the number of people had increased by four members. They said that since the preparations for the imperial expedition would be finished today, more people would increase tomorrow.

The center of today’s agenda was the total weight of the airplane. Airframe, wings, motor, propeller, nerve kit, self-destruct device, amplification device, Amber, etc. We decided the necessary volume roughly, determined the size of the airframe, and asked for opinions.

The total weight exceeded four kilograms. With this, what is supposed to fly will not fly.

Since one person from the silver ddo creation team joined, it seemed there would be progress even with the motor, for which the principle is difficult to understand. For that person, just in case, I explained the motor that uses magic magnets.

 Next, the airframe.

The material was sapwood of red pine, which is often available in this vicinity and is said to be used to working with wood. The heartwood in the center is hard and heavy, but the well-dried sapwood is somewhat light, so I selected it, but if it is used as a single board, it is too heavy. When I proposed a truss structure that combines triangles for the main body, surprisingly they knew the meaning. They said it is the basis of the timber-framed houses common around here, and it is used for the piers of small bridges.

The wings were also changed from single boards to creating a frame, inserting thin boards that look like a kamaboko seen from the side—like what appears in Birdman—and covering the whole thing with parchment.

Other than that, for the self-destruct device and my amplification device, we aimed for a 20% weight reduction. However, the total weight did not fall below one kilogram.

As for the propeller, naturally, if it’s the propeller of a bamboo dragonfly, it won’t produce thrust, so the material selected yesterday was walnut wood. Because it has strength and viscosity and little warping, it is said to be used for high-class furniture and carriages, so I adopted it. I showed the rough shape of the propeller, but it was decided to do testing using the motor for the size and detailed shape.

We met each other halfway to create things. Such a spirit is worthy of the Arsenal Bureau; they are dealing with it earnestly, and their opinions are also solid. At this rate, it might not take three weeks.

Hoping for that, I went outside taking human-sized Golems for the test of the amplifier.

 Whoa.

Outside, it was crowded with wagons carrying Golems repair kits.

 ”Oh my, aren’t you Larry-kun?”

The one who called out to me was Veronia-san, the person in charge of the accounting department of the Magic Armored Division. As always, she was wearing a pink military uniform.

”Are you taking them to the imperial expedition starting tomorrow?”

”That’s right, pet. One company and even Louise is goin’ along, ya see.”

Per one Golem, one Mage to operate it, five engineer mechanics. If that is one company, it is 16 Golems, 78 personnel, and in addition, Louise and her maintenance crew would attach.

 ”That’s not all, neither.”

It seemed the reason the name changed from Golems Battalion to Magic Armored Division was because the Artificial Shishiodoshi Squad was added, but apparently a coilgun artillery squad was also created.

Previously, when I was consulted on whether it was possible to eject things with a coilgun, I spoke about the fact that if the object you want to eject reaches the center of the coil, you must cut the Mana or it will be pulled back. Using that as a reference, what the Magic Armored Division’s workshop created was the magic cannon. If it’s to throw heavy things far away, a catapult is definitely superior, but the magic cannon can earn an insanely high number of ejections. While a catapult throws a 100kg stone once, a magic cannon can eject 30 times a cartridge containing 96 arrows, and even with a 12-spear cartridge that pierces armor, it can shoot 10 times, and it seems they are thinking of various other things besides that.

”We ain’t got no young Mages, so it’s all OG—Old Girls, like—though.”

It seemed they gathered up the women who graduated from the old Golems squad.

 ”Eh, don’t you include men?”

”Ahaha. D’ye truly reckon order could be kept if men joined our squad, pet?”

Certainly. But I wondered what kind of monsters the OG of the former Golems Battalion were.

”If, if Larry-kun says he wants to join, we’d be welcomin’ ye right heartily.”

”Um, is Major Sonya not going?”

The conversation seemed to be going in a strange direction, so I changed the topic.

”It’s fine, even without gettin’ permission from the Commander.”

”Not that side, in the Vod Fortress battle, you were going on the expedition together with Lieutenant Louise, so.”

 ”Ah, as for that…”

She directed a suggestive smile at me.

”Goo, kuu, hii. It is, pet.”

 Suggestively.

”Just kiddin’. Though I can’t say it in a loud voice, the Duke who was scheduled to be the caretaker was in poor health, so the second in line, Marquis Harritz, ended up stayin’ behind to guard the house. His Majesty seems to have wanted to place Marquis Sabaski, but this time, there is a high possibility of a two-front operation with the rebellion forces of Straba Province and the Kiridal army, so I had no choice but to take Marquis Sabaski along.”

”And so, the Major is the guardian for Marquis Harritz?”

Speaking of Marquis Harritz, he is the grandfather of Marc von Harritz who kidnapped Nico. For that alone, I don’t have a very good impression.

”That’s the way of it. The Duke’s eldest son has come to be dispatched to the garrison north of the castle, but the one he’s brought along is the Third Division, so it’s fair useless, like.”

When you say Third Division, I remember Corporal Heinz Schumacher who guarded me during spring break. Even though he was a Corporal, he seemed terrified of Hans-niisan and Alberto-san.

It seems even the Kingdom of Schuberitz, said to have become a strong nation, has difficult internal circumstances.

”And, what’s that on ye, then?”

She pointed to the reflector-like thing that doctors of otorhinolaryngology wear, which I attached to my forehead.

”What do you do when you want to talk to someone far away?”

”Ye’d just have to shout loud, wouldn’t ye?”

”Yes, with this, I shout loudly and move Golems far away. That test.”

The expression of Second Lieutenant Veronia changed.

 ”Ye’re jokin’, surely?”

 ”I am entirely serious!”

”Then ye best be lettin’ me accompany that test too, pet.”

She said it seriously. Under her surveillance, the experiment obtained results almost as predicted.

As I told Second Lieutenant Veronia, the device being tested this time was like the Golems and the operator each having a megaphone and exchanging information.

The result was: with the current circuit, it cannot withstand operation for more than 15 minutes. In the middle, the amplified information sent from the Golems starts to get rough. Especially the visual information that can be sent from the Golems becomes coarse in about 10 minutes.

Furthermore, the problem is the semicircular canals. Although they are synchronizing, perhaps they are not communicating well, but after 15 minutes pass, both the Golems and I start to feel as if we are drunk and cannot stay standing.

”The Luminous Magic Iron used for the circuit’s resistance is gettin’ too hot, pet.”

We must change the circuit to something more stable. If so, the Mana capacitor that Marie made is necessary.

”Hey, what is the meaning of this?”

”Therefore, as I said earlier, it is a machine for me and the Golems to discuss loudly.”

”Ye daft sod, I’m askin’ ye how ye can shout loud, not what the machine does!”

”Daft sod” isn’t necessary, right? For now, since telling her that would take one night, I’ll ask for her indulgence. Of course, she insisted that I hand it over when it’s finished. Come to think of it, Veronia was also registered in the battalion’s workshop.

To what extent can I make something stable? To what extent can the operation accuracy of the parts be raised? There were various issues, but with this test, it was proven that the line of thinking was not wrong.

Thereupon, I asked the bureau chief to go to the Academy to pick up things, but it was rejected. I wrote a letter to Henrietta-san and had Second Lieutenant Sabrina go pick it up.

* * *

The next morning, I witnessed the departure of the Magic Armored Division.

Louise was on duty guarding His Majesty the day before, so I could not meet her.

Leading the unit was the 1st Commander, Second Lieutenant Sarah Muller, her face covered in piercings.

But, I wonder what it is.

These people crossed the Danube River bridge with a cheerfulness as if they were going on a picnic.

 A week passed since then.

Although the capital of Straba Province, where the rebellion had occurred, had been recaptured, the overall pacification had not been reached in this province with its many mountainous areas, and the war situation did not seem favorable.

 Five days later.

Upon waking, Kenze had begun inserting her breasts into a jar to feed the Children.

When I let myself look at what kind of Children they were, creatures resembling tadpoles with pure white bivalve heads were floating on the water’s surface.

 (How disgusting.)

Perhaps sensing that atmosphere, Kenze made a very unpleasant face and hugged the jar as if to hide it.

The development of the airplane was going smoothly, and it had reached a point where a test flight of the first prototype seemed possible.

The amplification of Mana had also stabilized, becoming more than double the initial output.

It had reached the point where I could communicate within a space with a diameter of five hundred meters.

As for the operation time, the conclusion reached after conducting load tests on the Motor was approximately one hour.

When I turned the propeller toward the ceiling to conduct a thrust test to see how many kilograms it could lift, it produced a figure of about two kilograms.

With this, it felt like it would be possible to ascend to the very limit of the communication distance.

Only the self-destruct device did not go well.

If it could not be completed by tomorrow noon, it was decided that we would conduct the test flight with a weight of that mass installed.

The next morning, the airplane creation team was restless.

Finally, we could make it fly.

We flew it indoors like a glider without turning on the Motor to confirm the position of the center of gravity.

The self-destruct device was finished by daytime, and we painted the entire airplane gray.

In the evening, when the sun hid behind the clouds in the west, the experiment began.

Hearing the rumors, various people from the Bureau Chief down had come to observe, and seeing that, even Veronia Second Lieutenant and the other members of the Magic Armored Division began to gather.

I was in charge of piloting.

There were many gallery members, so I was incredibly nervous.

I synchronized with the nerve kit and flipped the Motor switch.

I operated the variable resistor Luminous Magic Iron to gradually increase the output.

 ”OK! Throw it!” I yelled.

Since I had not envisioned launching it from a runway, I asked Second Lieutenant Sabrina to throw it.

”Understood. Proceeding immediately,” Second Lieutenant Sabrina replied.

 It did not fall.

It left the Second Lieutenant’s hand and flew straight ahead just like that.

I operated the ailerons on both main wings to ascend.

From midway, it flew in a spiral.

 Applause erupted.

It was no longer a secret or anything.

”Hey, can you see it?” I asked.

The Bureau Chief grabbed my hand. “I understand. I’ll take care of it,” he said.

I do not really want to have my hand grabbed by an old man, but there is no helping it.

It seems he is watching the footage from the sky via Mind-reading.

”Amazing, this is what it looks like from the sky,” the Bureau Chief remarked.

In this vicinity, even the tallest thing is only about the height of the Magic Armored Division headquarters, about five stories tall, but now I was looking down from a height of about one hundred meters.

At the Bureau Chief’s voice, those who could use Mind-reading started grabbing my hand, one after another.

I wish they would stop it, but it is part of the service.

I endure it to vaguely satisfy them, harboring a vague expectation that if they accept it favorably, something good might happen in the future.

(Things like this have not changed since my previous life.)

In any case, the test flight ended in a great success.

I wanted to improve the wingspan and the Motor, but due to the Bureau Chief’s wish to deploy it to the battlefield as quickly as possible, we decided to build a mass production system for the time being.

However, the world was not that sweet.

Other than me, no one could fly the airplane.

They would crash and break them as soon as they made them.

I thought it depended on the person, but whoever did it would crash immediately.

At this rate, I could not deploy them to actual combat.

I realized it after five of them were broken.

People here do not know how to ride a bicycle.

In the first place, there are no bicycles.

 They cannot maintain balance.

When the airframe tilts to the right, they should immediately steer to the left, but they cannot do that.

They are the same as Children who cannot ride a bicycle.

It is not that their sense of balance is bad, but they are not used to it.

I urgently ordered bamboo from the Old Master’s village to make a practice plane with bamboo splints.

I also made the Motor smaller, and instead of a propeller made by carving walnut wood which takes time to make, I used a bamboo dragonfly propeller; of course, I did not load it with amplification circuits.

It took time to deal with that, but by practicing, people who could finally fly appeared.

When two weeks had passed, the number of airplanes that could be taken to the battlefield exceeded ten, but there were only five pilots.

The war situation in Straba state was in a stalemate.

It seems that the Kingdom of Kiridal is showing signs of invading the South Bohemia region with the backing of the Empire of Rus.

In other words, the war situation is not very good.

If we could scout the enemy from the sky, we could fight with a considerable advantage.

For the time being, it was decided that the five pilots and ten airplanes would be loaded onto an Outboard motor magic ship and sent to Besanburg.

 Why a magic ship?

Even if there were carriages, the horses were all out.

There is no choice but for the Bureau Chief to go to the Royal Capital and negotiate to bring them back.

If there were time for that, I would use the Outboard motor magic ship, and we would arrive in Besanburg in a whole day.

Moreover, the person on board is a Level 3 Mage.

Even if the Amber runs out, we can manage somehow.

If Besanburg is no good, we can go to Obernbach.

From there, we can enter the South Bohemia region via Linto.

 Nostalgic place names came up.

When this war is over, should I take Henrietta-san, Marie, Pamela, and Kenze and return to Strock Village?

On the way, I should meet Nico too.

It would not be strange for Marie to have given birth already, but I have not received any letters to that effect from Henrietta-san or the person herself.

I only had a letter from Henrietta-san saying that her parents were coming to the Royal Capital and she wanted me to meet them.

My Sister-in-law should also have given birth long ago, but well, it takes time for letters to reach here from there, and it is an emergency now.

As if to shake off such thoughts, the Outboard motor made a noisy “da-da-da-da” sound, and the magic ship carrying the airplanes and pilots went down the Danube River.

I returned to my room and started developing a new device.

For that reason, yesterday, I ran around the vast Arsenal Bureau grounds, had a round with Kenze, then went to drink and meet Larry.

The real Larry had moved his residence to a condominium near Himeji Station in Hyogo Prefecture, Japan.

It seems he sold the cheap, shoddily built house that my parents left behind.

I had things I wanted to say about that, but I will never return.

I am not in a position to complain to Larry.

Also, his wife was pregnant, and her belly was noticeable.

(‘When I came before, she was already pregnant.’)

The last time I visited was the day before Larry’s wedding to this woman who does office work at a hospital.

When I said the dates did not add up since they got married, he confessed honestly.

That night, while accompanying him on his solitary evening drink, I told him about my proposal to Henrietta-san, winning Kenze at an auction, and so on, and I was made a fool of as much as possible.

Even though he is more than two cycles younger than me.

(‘However, my body in that world (Japan) is no longer mine.’)

Larry also seemed satisfied with his current life.

After that, I was allowed to review the circuit of the transceiver on the internet, and I returned to this world.

If Children are going to be born, is it better not to go?

For Larry, this world might be better forgotten.

He is living his own way, having connections with people.

* * *

After that, I received a letter that worried me.

 It was from Professor Karl.

”Marie is currently hospitalized in the affiliated hospital for childbirth, but she has not yet delivered past her due date. Due to her heightened state of emotional instability, she has unfortunately come to believe disinformation regarding the Bohemia region being an active battlefield,” Professor Karl stated analytically.

 She insists on going home.

He asked if I could come to visit her once to calm her down.

When I went to see the Bureau Chief with that letter, he permitted it, as expected.

”However, it is a day trip. Understood?” the Bureau Chief said.

Well, even without a carriage, it is one and a half hours one way on foot, three hours round trip, so I can manage somehow.

The girl in administration says that if I go early in the morning, I might be able to get a ride on a farmer’s carriage going to sell vegetables.

I think that such a pastoral daily life is also nice.

”Tomorrow, I am going to the Royal Capital on a day trip. Take care of the place while I am gone,” I announced.

When I returned to my room and told Kenze, she said she did not want to.

”Take me with you,” Kenze insisted.

”What about those Children?” I asked.

”I’ll take ’em, literally,” she replied.

”There is no carriage, it would be impossible to go on foot,” I countered.

”Nah, I’m taking ’em,” she said.

 ”Why?” I asked.

”If you die, this child literally can’t be raised,” Kenze stated.

”Why would I die, and besides, until just recently, you were trying to kill me, were you not?” I asked.

”It is wartime now, like, I don’t know what will happen,” she shrugged.

She is a selfish woman, but it will be a pain if I have to carry the jar.

Should I leave early in the morning and try to get a ride on a farmer’s carriage?

At that moment, I heard the sound of several people running down the hallway.

”The Royal Capital is burning, you idiot!” a Bureau member yelled.

(You have to be kidding me.)

I opened the door and ran along with the direction the people were flowing.

When I left the entrance and ran up to the embankment of the Danube River, the Royal Capital was truly engulfed in flames.

Moreover, it was burning in a quite wide area.

Several columns of black smoke from the fire were rising toward the sky.

Because it is on the opposite shore, it is far away and I cannot see it well, but it is not near the Academy.

However, it might be near my sister’s shop.

”It seems to be the Crown Prince’s rebellion,” a passerby muttered.

Such talk reached my ears, but that cannot be.

Even if the Crown Prince leaves it alone, the throne is guaranteed.

There is no reason at all for him to be in such a hurry to start a rebellion.

At that point, a horse came running up from behind.

 ”Clear the way!”

The one shouting was Veronia Second Lieutenant, wearing a pink military uniform.

”Understood. Proceeding immediately,” she barked as she pushed through the people, reached the main road, and left at a gallop toward the Royal Capital.

Not long after that, people started flowing from the direction of the Royal Capital.

”Mercenaries who don’t know the lingo have flooded in,” a passerby shouted.

”Whose language is it?” another asked.

”That’s a Cossack, Haritz the bastard must’ve invited ’em in,” a Bureau member spat.

I heard that Cossacks are like a vigilante group that also acts as a mercenary group living in the southern part of the Empire of Rus.

That means, did the Empire of Rus invade directly while the King was out on a personal expedition?

Or, as someone says, did Marquis Harritz invite them in?

I do not understand, but there is no doubt that the Royal Capital is being set on fire and ravaged by someone.

And, I have no choice but to wait for accurate information to arrive.

Depending on the situation, I must go to save Aiane-san, and also Marie and Henrietta-san.

In this world, to be ravaged by war means houses are burned, women and Children are taken away as Slavery, and men are all killed.

Actually, in the Vod Fortress battle, we did that in the Kingdom of Kiridal’s Haraens Village and Owens Village.

I did not personally lay a hand on them, but the women and Children were sold into Slavery, and the men and useless Old men were tied up, beheaded, and buried in holes.

Marie is trying to give birth to my child, and I made Henrietta-san my wife.

I must go to save them, without fail.

 —

 Summary:

The Magic Armored Division departs for the front lines with a surprisingly lighthearted demeanor despite the grim outlook. Larry observes their departure, noting the presence of an unexpected commander. A week of stagnation in the Straba Province campaign follows, with little progress in pacifying the mountainous region. The situation remains precarious five days later.

The narrator successfully completes the first test flight of their airplane, though they discover that the locals lack the balance to pilot it. As the Bureau prepares for potential war, the narrator is summoned to the Royal Capital due to Marie’s pregnancy complications. Suddenly, the Royal Capital is seen burning, signaling a potential invasion by foreign mercenaries.

 —

 Trivia:

The division’s name change reflects the integration of new experimental units.

The unit is composed entirely of veteran female mages.

The war effort is suffering from the logistical difficulty of pacifying mountainous terrain.

The airplane was painted gray to disguise it.

The pilots use bamboo practice planes to learn balance because they have no experience with bicycles.

The narrator’s previous life included a brother named Larry who moved to Himeji, Japan.

The narrator uses a nerve kit to synchronize with the airplane’s controls.
