Vital-Master v3c57

Volume 3 Chapter 57

The Dungeon Master had not lied.

 ”Hoo! Haa! Haaaaah!”

She was giving it everything she had, and her movements were the fastest, heaviest, and sharpest I had seen anywhere in this Phase Six Dungeon. Her technique was surprisingly refined as well, with several moves mixed into her attacks that would have been nearly impossible to avoid even with three or four hundred stacks of Perception Enhancement active.

Then again, my current levels of Perception Enhancement, Physical Augmentation, and everything else had long since crossed into cheat territory.

To me, everything she did looked painfully slow, and even her most polished martial arts felt no more threatening than a child playfully swinging their arms.

 ”Huuuugh!”

As her long-legged roundhouse swept toward me, I slipped past it and drove a quick jab into her chest.

 ”Kyaa!”

The strike sent her flying backward, and the surprisingly cute cry that escaped her lips made me blink.

So the Dungeon Master really was a girl after all.

”My, my, you truly are strong!” she chirped. “I finally understand why I was told to go all-out against you. Honestly, I’ve accepted that I can’t win this, but the feeling of ‘admitting defeat’ just won’t rise within me! I’m not even sure if I have a function for that, so wouldn’t it be better if you just went ahead and broke me without holding back…?”

”Hmm, that’s really a last resort,” I replied. “You have other skills you haven’t used yet, right? If we crush all of those, maybe your heart will finally accept defeat?”

”I don’t know, but let’s give it a try!” she exclaimed. “Haaaaaaaaah!”

She brought her palms together, and a sphere of densely packed energy began to swell between them. The amount of power she poured into it was so immense that the entire floor started to hum and vibrate.1 A moment later, she launched the orb straight at me.

An ordinary person would never have been able to dodge it.

Of course, I was not exactly ordinary.

”I could dodge it, but if I want to make you admit defeat, this is the way to go!” I shouted. “Haaaaaaaaah!”

Planting my feet, I drove a straight punch forward with everything I had.

 BOOOOOOOOOOOON!!!

My fist collided head-on with the energy sphere. Most of the power annihilated itself on impact, while the remainder erupted outward in a massive explosion.

The blast was absurdly powerful, but since I was standing at its center, I did not feel a thing. Even so, I glanced toward Mana in alarm. Thankfully, she had already deployed a Dungeon Energy Barrier, protecting both herself and Sakurako-san from the aftermath.

 As for the Dungeon Master…

”That was amazing!” she declared. “That was so much energy that, if we were in the Japan region, it would have been enough to blow Mount Fuji to bits. Does that mean your straight punch holds that same amount of power? My, I am thoroughly impressed!”

The explosion had hurled her backward and shredded most of her bodysuit, yet she remained standing as though nothing had happened.

The torn fabric around her chest left very little to the imagination, removing any remaining doubt about that earlier question.

”…So, how about it?” I asked. “Still not feeling like admitting defeat?”

”I apologize,” she said with a polite bow, “but it seems my recognition of ‘not being able to win’ and my recognition of ‘admitting defeat’ are not the same thing. If you could hurt me a little more, perhaps?”

”Man, that’s not really something I want to do,” I groaned, “but I guess I don’t have a choice.”

Even if there was no excitement left in a fight whose outcome had already been decided, I still had a job to do. Carefully calculating my output so I could damage her without accidentally killing her, I stepped forward and threw myself back into the battle.

 Summary:

The protagonist continues his intense sparring match against the Dungeon Master, whose movements reach their peak intensity. After an accidental reveal of the Dungeon Master’s gender, the protagonist remains locked in combat despite his lack of genuine malice. He forces an energy explosion, yet the fight remains technically unresolved as the Dungeon Master fails to recognize defeat.

 —

 Trivia:

The Dungeon Master is confirmed to be a “female type” entity.

The fight is taking place in a ‘Phase Six’ level dungeon.

Mana possesses a ‘Dungeon Energy Barrier’ skill for protection.

The Dungeon Master explicitly lacks a programmed function for admitting defeat.

 Translation Notes:

1 In Japanese light novel combat, the charging of energy between palms is a common visual shorthand for a high-output special move, often used to contrast the character’s casual demeanor.
