Vital-Master v3c56

Volume 3 Chapter 56

Just as I had suspected, someone was already waiting for us.

 ”Congratulations~!”

The moment we stepped onto the Hundredth Floor, a bright, cheerful voice greeted us.

It belonged to neither a man nor a woman, and I knew it so well that I could have recognized it instantly with my eyes closed. The smiling face that greeted us was just as familiar.

”…I knew it. The Dungeon Master really is the final encounter.”

”That is correct!” the Dungeon Master replied with a radiant smile. “As the final boss of this Phase Six Dungeon, it is I—this humble Dungeon Master!”

Seeing them standing there with such a carefree grin made it difficult to feel any sense of urgency. Even so, the Dungeon Master was the being responsible for governing the entire Dungeon system.

Considering that conquering a Phase Six Dungeon granted control over that system, it made sense that the one standing at the very end would be the Dungeon Master.

”If we defeat you, do we gain management rights over not only this Phase Six Dungeon but the surrounding Dungeons as well?” I asked.

”Exactly! Since the three of you have already reached the Hundredth Floor, you should be capable of defeating me. My difficulty is not much higher than what you faced on the Ninety-Ninth Floor, and because I have caused you a fair amount of trouble, I intend to hold back as much as possible!”

I appreciated the thought, but if the difficulty was not much higher than the previous floor, I had a feeling we could defeat the Dungeon Master even at full strength.

”…I see. Then how exactly are we supposed to beat you?”

”Through combat, of course!” the Dungeon Master answered as though it were the most obvious thing in the world. “Please feel free to break me without hesitation. Just like any other Dungeon Monster, I will disappear with a poof.”

”Wait, seriously? I mean, you’ve helped us out so many times that it’s hard to think of breaking you.”

”It is perfectly fine! There are many Phase Six Dungeons throughout the world, so plenty of my fragments still exist. Once all of them are conquered, however, I will disappear completely. Whether one is a person or a Dungeon Master, nothing lasts forever. If I am defeated by those I have troubled so much, I will have no regrets!”

The Dungeon Master sounded completely sincere, but that did not make the idea any easier to accept.

I could understand that conquering every Phase Six Dungeon was necessary for the future of the world. Even so, I could not help wondering whether there was another option.

”Hmm… is there really no way to win besides fighting?”

The Dungeon Master tilted their head.

”…Well, not entirely. As part of my settings, I can surrender and transfer the Dungeon’s management rights if I truly acknowledge defeat. The problem is that I do not know what kind of situation would make me genuinely feel defeated.”

So there was another method after all.

”Hmm. In that case, why don’t we try fighting first and see whether you decide to surrender?”

”I appreciate the consideration, but I am quite strong, you know?” the Dungeon Master replied with a troubled smile. “If you lower your guard and die, would that not be a loss for the entire world?”

Even after hearing that, I could not picture myself losing.

At my current strength, even if the Dungeon Master hit me with their strongest attack, I doubted it would do much damage.

”Well, we won’t know until we try. Dungeon Master, I’ll fight you alone, so come at me with everything you’ve got. I don’t think I can accept your defeat unless I see your full strength first.”

The Dungeon Master’s smile faded slightly.

”…I see. As the Dungeon Master, I do not possess the function to refuse such a request. Still, are you truly certain?”

”Yeah. Mana and Sakurako-san might want a turn too, but would you mind if I handled this one?”

”Of course, Kanade-kun,” Mana answered without hesitation. “I trust you, and if possible, I would prefer for the Dungeon Master to survive as well.”

”Yeah, I agree!” Sakurako nodded. “I’d love to fight the Dungeon Master myself, but I don’t think I could win a one-on-one battle yet. If this works out, I’ll ask for a mock fight the next time we find a Phase Six Dungeon.”

 Neither of them objected.

”In that case…” I stepped forward and faced the Dungeon Master directly. “Show me your full strength.”

 ”Very well.”

 The Dungeon Master’s smile returned.

 ”Let us begin.”

On the final floor of the Phase Six Dungeon, the Dungeon Master and I faced each other.

The last battle was about to begin.

 Summary:

Kanade and his party reach the final floor of the Phase Six dungeon and encounter the Dungeon Master. After a brief discussion regarding the nature of the Dungeon Master’s existence and the mechanics of their defeat, Kanade decides to face the entity in a one-on-one battle. The scene concludes as the two prepare to engage in combat.

 Trivia:

The Dungeon Master is an entity managing the dungeon system rather than a mere monster.

Defeating the Dungeon Master is the requirement for gaining control over the dungeon management system.

The Dungeon Master has multiple “fragments” or “clones” across various Phase Six dungeons.

The Dungeon Master can theoretically surrender if they truly acknowledge defeat, though they don’t know the criteria for this.
