Volume 6 Chapter 16 Uninvited Guests
Edited by: Kanaa-senpai
Elder’s Manor, Private Guest Room.
After completing the examination in the basement, I had the two Beastwomen get dressed and moved them to a different room. A thick oak door sealed the space from the outside, while the sweet, clinging scent of female Beastmen lingered in the air and settled heavily at the back of my throat.
With my arms crossed, I looked down at the pair seated before me.
Mimi and Lara could not have been more different.
Mimi gripped the edge of her chair so tightly her fingers trembled. Her rabbit ears twitched in uneven bursts, and her quick, nervous breathing filled the cramped room, making her look less like a person and more like a frightened animal cornered with nowhere to run.
Lara, meanwhile, sat with her hands folded neatly in her lap. Her breathing was so faint it was almost impossible to notice, while her narrowed eyes tracked every movement I made as though she were quietly measuring me.
”Listen carefully. Answer only what I ask,” I said in a flat voice. “I do not need unnecessary details.”
Mimi’s shoulders jumped.
”Y-yes, sir!”
Beside her, Lara lowered her head without a word, exposing the vulnerable nape of her neck.
”Mimi. You said you heard people approaching. Explain everything.”
Mimi winced and pressed her fingers against her temples.
”…It was like… a sharp, piercing noise. Like needles scraping inside my head. It was awful. My ears are too sensitive… I felt sick…”
”I see. Then what happened?”
”The monsters in the forest started running away. Even the big ones. They looked terrified, like they were trying to escape something they could not see…”
I rubbed my chin.
The description reminded me of the high-frequency pest repellents used back on Earth1, although reproducing something like that should have been impossible without electronics. Then again, this world ran on magic rather than common sense. If someone had recreated the same principle through a magic tool powered by magic stones or another catalyst, the idea was not entirely impossible.
”Is the source of the sound moving?”
”Y-yes… slowly. Thump… thump… Their footsteps all hit the ground together…”
”How many?”
”A lot…” she answered weakly. “The footsteps, the clattering sounds… even their heartbeats were overlapping. Dozens of them… no, maybe even more…”
”…May I add something, if it pleases you?”
Lara’s dry lips parted as she finally spoke.
I gave a slight nod.
After swallowing once, she lifted her eyes toward me beneath her lashes, a faint smile touching her lips.
”The rhythm Mimi described is a march, my good sir. The footsteps are uniform, and the sounds of armor and equipment moving together remain consistent. This is not a collection of adventurers or bandits. It is either a trained standing army or a force disciplined enough to resemble one.”
I raised an eyebrow.
She had turned a collection of sounds into military intelligence almost instantly. Just as I suspected, she was far more capable than an ordinary receptionist.
”Hoh. You are quite sharp.”
Lara’s smile deepened slightly.
”If I wish to remain useful to Goshujin-sama, then I must care for my mind as diligently as my tail. Would you not agree?”
A slow breath escaped my lungs.
That settled it.
A large force was advancing deep into the Magic Forest while maintaining military discipline and somehow avoiding the monsters. I had no idea who they were, but anyone capable of rewriting the natural rules of this forest was unquestionably approaching my territory.
”Guests,” I muttered.
”…Uninvited ones.”
Leaving the room, I passed instructions to the guards waiting in the hallway.
Emergency assembly.
Elder’s Manor, Grand Conference Hall.
By the time everyone gathered, the sun had already begun to descend from its peak. A heavy silence hung over the polished round table at the center of the conference hall.
Present were Elder Erland, High Priestess Serafina, and Farrell, Captain of the Guard. This time, I had also called in Melis for reconnaissance and Elie-na for analysis.
”Melis. Report.”
At my command, Melis stepped forward.
Although her clothing emphasized her ample chest, her expression remained entirely serious. Her eyes could perceive things beyond normal vision, allowing her to detect fluctuations of heat invisible to most people.
”…I can sense them,” she reported. “Southeast of the village, inside the forest. I cannot see them clearly, but the movement of heat traces a path through the trees.”
”Monsters?”
”No.”
She narrowed her eyes.
”These smaller heat signatures… are they humans?”
A sharp click broke the tense silence.
Erland had closed her fan and tapped its tip against the table.
”Humans?” she repeated. “I find that exceedingly difficult to believe.”
”It is the truth, Erland-sama,” Melis replied firmly. “The trees make it difficult to judge accurately, but there are dozens of them. Possibly more.”
”Impossible…”
Erland slowly shook her head, silver hair swaying with the motion.
”For such a fragile race to walk through the Magic Forest as though it belonged to them… what in the world is happening?”
”How fascinating!”
Elie-na pushed her silver-rimmed glasses higher with one finger while scribbling furiously across the documents in her hands. Fear was nowhere to be found in her bluish eyes. Instead, they shone with the excitement of a researcher staring at an entirely new field of study.
”A sound that drives monsters away… If they truly recreated the concept of frequency through magic tools as Master suggested, then the design must be incredibly logical and innovative! I want a sample. I want to dismantle it and uncover every principle behind it.”
”My King.”
Serafina’s voice rolled through the room like a clear bell, cutting across the growing tension.
”Whatever technology the enemy possesses, the fact remains that they are approaching. I always believed a day like this would eventually come. We could raise the village barrier to maximum output and remain inside.”
”No.”
I rejected the idea immediately.
”That would be a mistake. They already possess an unknown method for dealing with the monsters, and I have no idea what else they may have prepared. There is no reason to invite them directly to the village. We will intercept them in the forest instead. That is precisely what our buffer zone exists for.”
I tapped a location on the hand-drawn map.
”Understood.”
Serafina bowed.
”I will make the necessary arrangements.”
”I also want to know why they are here,” I continued. “Capture whoever appears to be in command. The rest can be eliminated. We will also recover the source of that sound.”
A chair scraped loudly across the floor.
Farrell was already on his feet.
The flesh lost during his earlier injuries had been fully restored by Regenerate, yet his expression remained rigid. Blood seeped from his clenched fists where his nails dug into his palms.
”My King!”
His voice rang through the hall.
”You do not even need to ask. Leave this matter to the Guard!”
The floor groaned beneath him.
Farrell dropped to one knee with enough force to shatter bone.
”Regarding the matter with Gauz, I failed you. We could not protect the village. We could not protect anything. I cannot accept that humiliation. Please… grant me the opportunity to reclaim my honor.”
I glanced toward Erland.
Her fan concealed her mouth, but her cold aristocratic eyes remained fixed on me as she gave a small nod.
”As Farrell says.”
She inclined her head gracefully.
”They are trampling through our garden with muddy feet. The forest belongs to us Elves. There is no reason we should lose to mere humans.”
I considered it for a moment.
Personally intervening would be easy.
But doing so would crush their pride.
”Very well.”
I nodded.
”The operation begins at midnight. There is no need to engage them when conditions favor them. We will strike while humans are at their deepest point of sleep.”
”Sir! Understood!”
Farrell snapped to attention.
”Listen carefully.”
My gaze swept across the gathered Elves.
”The enemy is human. Once darkness falls, their vision will be crippled, and they will struggle to move without torches. You, however, can navigate the forest even under faint moonlight. More importantly, this is our territory. We know every inch of it.”
Farrell’s lips curled into a grim smile.
”Then it will be a one-sided hunt.”
”Exactly.”
I nodded.
”There is no need for fairness. Melt into the darkness and reap them alongside their fear. Kill them all.”
A savage light ignited in Farrell’s eyes.
”However, you will need a shield.”
A ripple spread through the room.
”I will speak to him myself, so make use of that lion. Consider it rent. Set him loose at the front and let him rampage as much as he likes.”
The room stirred again.
Against an enemy wrapped in unknown methods and unknown intentions, releasing a monster that defied common sense was the most practical answer available.
I rose from my chair.
Now then.
It was time to unchain an exceptionally dangerous watchdog.
