Volume 6 Chapter 15 The Developed Rabbit Ears
Edited by: Kanaa-senpai
”…Hm?”
I furrowed my brow and pressed the base of Mimi’s long ears between my fingertips. An unpleasant vibration immediately ran through them, sharp enough to make my teeth ache, while a high metallic ringing echoed through my skull.
These were not ordinary ears; the moment the trace amounts of Mana1 leaking from my fingers touched them, her auditory organs reacted with violent sensitivity.
…Interesting.
Curiosity got the better of me, so I let a tiny amount of Mana drip from my fingertips and watched for a response.
The result was immediate.
Mimi stiffened, her shoulders jerking as a strange sound escaped her throat.
”Don’t move,” I said. “It’s only Mana.”
Carefully increasing the flow, I observed her reaction. Her knees gave out beneath her, and as her unfocused gaze drifted through the air, saliva slipped from the corner of her mouth while her breathing grew ragged. The response was far stronger than I had expected.
”Hoh…”
I watched with detached interest.
Her ears had clearly become unusually sensitive to Mana. Rather than functioning as ordinary auditory organs, they seemed to react directly to the energy itself.
The more I examined the phenomenon, the more convinced I became that her hearing was not limited to sound alone.
What if she was perceiving Mana itself?
If that were true, then forcing dense Mana directly into that sense would overwhelm it completely.
The idea lingered in my thoughts for only a moment before a new possibility emerged.
If she could receive Mana so effectively, then perhaps she could transmit it as well.
A receiver could become a transmitter.
”Alright,” I said. “Playtime is over. Stay still.”
Mimi looked up at me with vacant eyes.
What came next was not a caress.
”I’m reversing the flow.”
Without hesitation, I inverted the current and forced the compressed Mana outward.
Mimi screamed.
The reaction was violent enough to make it seem as though her head had ruptured from within. Blood trickled from her nose and ears, and her entire body convulsed as the sensation reversed itself.
Then a deep vibration rolled through the room.
Vwooom.
The air trembled.
Just as I suspected.
Her ears were functioning like a speaker.
Success.
While Lara stared in shock, I had already moved on to the next problem. The mechanism worked, but a signal required a destination.
To contact someone across an entire continent, I needed an anchor.
A marker.
Then a name surfaced in my mind.
Nier.
The woman I had left behind in Grimm.
Whether I realized it at the time or not, I had poured enormous amounts of Mana into her over the years. I had seen the lingering effects it left on others. If traces of my Mana still remained within her, then perhaps I could use them as a guide.
There was no certainty.
But it was worth attempting.
”Search, Mimi,” I whispered into her ear. “Find the place that carries the same Mana as mine.”
Mimi trembled.
”Somewhere far away is a woman who bears my mark. Find her and connect us.”
The logic was simple.
A key and a keyhole.
If the connection still existed, distance would be irrelevant.
Mimi shook violently, foam gathering at the corners of her mouth as she struggled against the strain. Even so, her ears slowly turned toward the southeast.
Toward Grimm.
Then I felt it.
Click.
Something invisible locked into place.
”…Connected.”
I knew it with certainty.
Far beyond the limits of ordinary distance, my Mana had found Nier.
Ignoring Lara’s stunned muttering behind me, I focused entirely on the connection and spoke through Mimi’s ears.
”Can you hear me, Nier?”
Several seconds passed.
Then a voice emerged through the vibration itself, distorted by static yet unmistakable.
”…Ah… Goshujin-sama…!?”
Nier.
There was no mistaking that voice.
”Just a status report,” I replied. “I’m alive.”
The relief in her response was immediate.
”I am blessed beyond words simply to hear your voice again.”
A faint smile touched my lips.
”I have gained new strength. I will not return for some time, but continue watching over the mansion.”
”Y-Yes!” she replied without hesitation. “I await your return. I shall devote my entire being to your service.”
After hearing her answer, I cut off the Mana supply.
The connection vanished instantly.
”…Phew.”
I removed my hand from Mimi’s ears.
She collapsed onto the stained sheets like a puppet whose strings had been cut. Blood still marked her face, and her body had clearly exceeded its limits.
”Super-compensation.”
A thin layer of light covered her body.
Several seconds later, the glow faded. The bleeding stopped, and her ragged breathing settled into a peaceful rhythm.
”Well done.”
Looking down at her sleeping face, I considered the damage that had been done. Her body was healed, but the strain she had endured had been severe.
Still, when she finally regained consciousness, her expression seemed strangely refreshed.
”My ears feel warm…” she murmured dreamily. “And everything sounds clearer now, master.”
”Clearer?”
Mimi nodded.
”I can hear people walking.”
My eyes narrowed.
”People?”
”Yes. Lots of them. They’ve been moving this way for a while.”
The answer instantly erased any satisfaction I felt regarding the experiment.
This rabbit’s hearing truly was extraordinary.
From a distance where ordinary senses would perceive nothing, she had already detected approaching movement.
Unfortunately, that meant only one thing.
I stood and turned toward the forest.
”…Dozens of them, you said?”
No answer came.
Yet I already knew they were not ordinary travelers. No adventurer could wander this deep into the Magic Forest by accident.
The village had only just regained its peace.
Now, another storm was approaching.

Trivia:
The protagonist views his own bodily fluids and Mana as having a permanent, transformative effect on those he interacts with.
Mimi’s ear sensitivity has shifted from a mere erogenous zone to a precision long-range auditory radar capable of tracking footsteps across vast distances.
The protagonist’s Mana acts as a unique biometric key that can only interact with Nier’s heart due to prior physical intimacy.
