Volume 3 Chapter 45 Earnest
Edited by: Kanaa-senpai
Carpaccio, we’ll reach the village soon.
Beyond the tunnel of trees, a bright white endpoint began to appear.
If we pass through there, it’s Strock Village.
To my right, the Dish Basin with its ripples sparkling in the sunlight; down the slope, past the bridge over the Rhodes River, is the settlement where Alberto-san and the others live.
If I head left in front of the watchtower in the center of the settlement, it’s a gentle upward slope toward the Honjo settlement, where the Village Head Tower stands.
Is this the courtyard of my parents’ house?
”Boccha, mmm, hair, grown. Let’s, have, a haircut,” Yutia said, clutching wool shears with a happy giggle.
”Help me out, would you,” Nico said as she carried a bucket from the back door.
”Larry, when did you get back?” Iffens-niisan asked. He stepped out from the main house with the sister-in-law, who held second daughter Maria and pulled Lyrica by the hand.
”What are you grinning at!” Hans-niisan growled, grabbing my chest and shaking my body.
”Wake up, Children have come, they want to see you. It doesn’t look like a trivial matter,” Kenze said, her voice clipped and professional as she shook me.
It was such a good dream, too.
”Children?” I asked.
”They say ‘Inga’ and ‘Laima’. They say ‘Trabius’ is in trouble, hurry,” she replied.
I answered “got it” and sat up.
Inga and Laima?
I remembered. The orphans from the village destroyed by the Order of Knights.
They were supposed to have been entrusted to the late Lord of Yoghess.
”Where are they?” I asked.
”Waiting at the entrance of the inn,” Kenze reported.
I don’t know the time.
It’s still dark outside, but the Maids are already up, and the scent of burning firewood is drifting in.
”Larry-sama,” the girls called out in the Finno-Samic language, and then they suddenly burst into tears.
They were from the village of Rente, near Mustopae, if I recall; sisters, eight and six years old.
”There, there, you did well to come. You did well,” I said, stroking their heads. They only cried harder.
Surprised by the noise, the Maids and even Isabella—who looks like a gorilla—along with her subordinates who had come to fetch me, emerged from the back.
Isabella is the aunt of Marie, who was the former leader of the “Weasels of Bohemia,” and is now a lieutenant (she had been promoted) in the Royal Army.
She is the Commander of the escort unit that came to meet me from Schweilitz.
”Has Larry’s disease worsened to the point where he’s laying hands on children like that?” Isabella asked, her tone sharp and military.
”What kind of disease!” I exclaimed.
”Marie said it was a disease of being loose with women,” she stated flatly.
Somehow, if Marie was the one who said it, I feel I have no choice but to accept it.
But, no—that’s wrong.
”I might be loose with women, but I wouldn’t lay a hand on children like this,” I countered.
”Then why have these Children come at such an hour?” she demanded.
That’s right, I have to ask why these children came.
”Inga. Why did you all come from Trabius?” I asked.
When I asked the older sister, she explained that since Katri had to go to Trabius, the two of them decided to go along as well.
It seems Pia was the only one left who could operate the Golems kept at Trabius. Katri had picked up these two on her way to take care of the pregnant Pia.
”Katri is also pregnant, isn’t she, is she alright?” I asked.
Well, even if I asked such things, they were just Children, so I got no reply.
”Did you get two more women pregnant over there? You’re sick. I’ll tell Marie,” Isabella stated with a serious face.
I’ll keep quiet for now about getting Duke Igor’s youngest daughter Ellie and Marie’s friend Manuela pregnant.
”So, what happened in Trabius?” I asked.
”This,” Inga replied, taking a scrap of paper from her pocket and handing it to me.
===
Dear Grand Duke Fee,
Trabius is currently surrounded by an armed group whose leader calls himself General Yan Curie.
The Town guards used their wits to prevent them from entering the castle, but they are demanding that we hand over Trabius, claiming it was originally a Larland town.
When we replied that we could not answer for that, they replied that they would simply take it back by force.
They arrived yesterday. We have confirmed fifty Cavalry soldiers, one hundred Infantry, and two small Golems.
For now, they occasionally shoot arrows, but there has been no major attack; however, they will not allow us to communicate with the outside.
We have twenty Town guards, thirty Grand Principality1 Soldiers stationed here, one Type 98 Golem, and one Type 20 Golem.
Furthermore, as the town Village Head has gone to Cain, I, Katri, am acting in his stead.
There are no particularly suspicious movements inside the town.
===
To think the Maids are acting as the town’s Village Head.
No, most of the people there speak Rus.
It is possible that besides Katri, there was no one else from this side (Grand Principality) who could speak the language.
”Inga, about what time did you leave Trabius?” I asked, shaking the body of Inga, who had started nodding off, perhaps because she felt relieved.
”Yesterday morning,” she mumbled.
I heard it’s about fifty kilometers from here to Trabius.
Did they walk for more than ten hours without sleeping to get here?
”I’m sorry, but could you feed them something and let them sleep?” I told the Maids, then ordered Kenze to go get Thomas.
”Hey, you don’t intend to go help them, do you?” Isabella asked, grabbing my shoulder and forcing me to look into her face.
”Of course I’m going. That Maya hag said she would invade my country. In fact, she’s come to occupy the entrance to our land. At first, I thought it was a joke, but looking at this, she’s serious. If I don’t crush them, I’ll be crushed,” I replied.
”Wait a minute, today is the day I’m taking you and leaving this place. What becomes of my position?” Isabella tried to stop me.
”Too bad, just give it up,” I said.
That’s right, I had somewhere to go.
I bolted from the entrance.
”Larry, where the hell are you going?” Isabella shouted behind me, but it didn’t matter.
I head toward Thomas’s house, turning left along the way.
If I go straight, there is the mansion where Thiele’s Body double is, but I stop at the stone house just before it.
When I stand in front of it, there is a military policeman on guard even this early in the morning, and he points his spear at me.
”I am Larry Fee, I would like to request an audience with Josef von Möller-dono,” I said.
”Larry Fee? What kind of nobody are you?” the young military policeman mocked.
I was laughed at by the young military policeman standing to my front right, but I recognized the military policeman who came out of the guard booth beside the gate, wondering what the noise was.
With an annoyed look, he went back inside the gate and called for someone from the house.
Five minutes later, in the drawing-room of that house, Josef von Möller was there in a dressing gown. He was the former Town Guards Commander of the Royal Capital of the Kingdom of Schweilitz.
Now, he is the Inspector General of the Military Police for the provisional government, and the husband of my colleague, Professor Lizabel.
”Are you the man who moved into the house next door?” he asked.
It seems he wants to avoid the conversation by talking about the house in the Royal Capital.
”Yes, nice to meet you, I look forward to working with you,” I said.
”Indeed, well then,” he dismissed.
Is this all there is to it?
The Middle-aged man starts to stand up.
”Um, that’s not quite it,” I insisted.
”I have no hobby of talking at length with an interloper who forces his way in this early in the morning,” he said.
It seems he knows about my relationship with Professor Lizabel.
”I am not an interloper. Besides, I am not here as a neighbor, but as the head of state of the Grand Fee Principality,” I stated.
”Where is the head of state who meets with another nation’s official all alone, without even an attendant?” he asked.
”That is how desperate the situation is,” I replied.
”Hmm,” the Inspector General grunted, sitting back down on the sofa.
”Did something happen, Grand Duke?” he asked.
”The town of Trabius, which belongs to my country, is being surrounded by Marshal Maya,” I explained.
The Inspector General looked away from me and opened his mouth after a short silence.
”Trabius is the town your country took from the Proton Order, isn’t it?” he asked.
”Yes, they invaded us and ran wild in our country as they pleased, so we wanted to make sure they wouldn’t enter again,” I answered.
”Why would the Marshal be there?” he asked.
”The day before yesterday, she came to see me and said that she would invade my country in the future,” I said.
”Does this mean that if Trabius is taken, it will no longer be a joke?” he questioned.
”Exactly,” I affirmed.
When he heard my answer, he closed his eyes and made me wait for a while.
”So, you intend to go and save it,” he stated.
”Yes,” I confirmed.
”However, this military action is being carried out under the control of Marshal Maya, who is at the top of the provisional government. In other words, nominally, I am also a subordinate of Marshal Maya. What is it you want me to do?” he asked.
”I want you to inform Chief of Staff Helbert and Major Sonya, who is at the Royal Capital of the former Kingdom of Larland, that I will be in a military conflict with Marshal Maya in order to preserve my country’s territory,” I requested.
”I don’t think either of them will help you,” he noted.
”That doesn’t matter. It’s a faint hope, but I think the cooperative relationship between Schweilitz and the Larland provisional government might be interrupted. Especially if I die,” I reasoned.
The Middle-aged man stares at me, so I return the smile.
”Well, I don’t intend to die, though. If my country can carve off even a fifth of this Yan, or Maya, warlord, I imagine the other warlords who have pledged allegiance to her might rebel,” I suggested.
”The founding of Larland has come this far, is it all to go down the drain?” he asked.
”No, if we eliminate the weakened Maya warlord and install a queen who is pro-Schweilitz, don’t you think Larland would become a stable kingdom?” I proposed.
”In other words, by you going to Trabius, whether you fail to save the town and die, or succeed, the result will be the elimination of the Maya warlord, and Larland will become a pro-King of Schweilitz country,” he summarized.
”Yes. If I don’t go to Trabius now, I will be condoning the tyranny of the Maya warlord, and wouldn’t that also put the Inspector General, who enforces military discipline, in a difficult position?” I asked.
The Middle-aged man closed his eyes and didn’t move for a while.
”However, couldn’t you, without crossing such a dangerous bridge, just be taken by those who came to fetch you and return to your country, living out your life as a professor at the Magic Academy?” he wondered.
”Well, that might be an option, but there are two women in Trabius who are pregnant with my children. If I were to run away, I wouldn’t be able to pursue my womanizing earnestly for the rest of my life,” I admitted.
Perhaps my words hit a nerve, as the Middle-aged man laughed out loud.
”I see, indeed, if you ran away, you might not be able to womanize earnestly,” he chuckled.
He laughed once more, then turned serious and chased out the military police who were in the same room, saying he had important things to discuss.
”Understood, I will properly contact Lieutenant Colonel Helbert and Major Sonya. Besides, Marshal Maya’s army has stopped following discipline; they are getting carried away, and I am quite fed up with it. Shall we tighten the screws a little?” he asked.
The Middle-aged man winked at me.
Is he going to provide covering fire under the guise of restoring military discipline?
That is, in itself, a welcome story.
”By the way, Grand Duke, you are younger than I thought,” he remarked.
”Is that so?” I asked.
”Yeah, and yet you had the nerve to do it with my Side Wife, Lizabel,” he noted.
I wonder if that means he has forgiven the affair.
Well, I look sixteen, but on the inside, I am a Middle-aged man, just like you.
”Well, it is the spirit of never turning away anyone who comes,” I said.
”Then, next time, shall the three of us take a bath together?” he asked.
Hmm?
”What are you even saying?” I asked.
”Even at this age, I reckon I can’t keep up with that guy’s libido, you know,” he said.
Are you suggesting a threesome? Please, spare me that.
”That’s right. It would be fine to include the Primary Wife, Lysan, too. She hasn’t even hit fifty yet. You know, Lysan and Lizabel are sisters. Have you ever tasted a ‘shimaidon’?2 I didn’t think so,” he said.
No, no, that level of sophisticated discourse is a bit beyond even me. In this world, a forty-year age gap is basically grandmother and grandchild.
”Well, that’s assuming we make it back to the Royal Capital alive, hahahaha,” he said.
Realizing he had been too open about his fetishes to someone he just met, he tried to brush it off.
But this middle-aged man is on good terms with the Elf Mage, Chulpan, isn’t he? Come to think of it, Chulpan once mentioned something about using Vaseline to toy with an anus. The Inspector General is a pro I can’t even hold a candle to.
Just as the Inspector General saw me to the entrance, his third daughter, Doris, showed up.
”Larry-kun, what’s wrong?” Doris asked.
She wrapped her arms around the Inspector General’s arm and looked at me mischievously.
”You two know each other?” Josef asked.
”Yeah, we were classmates at Bizan Magic School,” Doris said.
”I see. So the Grand Duke went to that school, too,” Josef said.
”Papa, you know what? Larry-kun is the one who stole my first kiss,” Doris said.
That’s not right. It was one-sided. Doris, you were the one who started it. The Inspector General’s face was turning redder by the second. Why did you have to say that here? I’m starting to feel like crying.
”Inspector General, it’s a misunderstanding,” I said.
”Shut up! You—you man, don’t you ever show your face in front of me again!” Josef shouted.
Doris, you brat. If the Inspector General refuses to contact the Lieutenant Colonel and I die, I’m going to haunt you. But honestly, between Lizabel and now Doris, why does this mother-daughter duo keep getting in my way?
I left the Inspector General’s house, feeling utterly dissatisfied.
”Still, what am I going to do?” I muttered.
The words escaped me as I headed toward the inn. The fact that they have the town surrounded means they’re either waiting for reinforcements or waiting for me to show up.
If it’s the latter, the problem is minimal. I can fly a |fixed-wing drone in advance to scout their positions. If I’m the only target, I can ride on Horseback with light equipment instead of taking a carriage; the heavily armored knights won’t be able to catch up. Even if Infantry blocks my way, I can fire my Coilgun from horseback. Best of all, if I can slip into the town, I have the Type 98 Golems. If it’s a unit of about 150 Infantry and Horseback, there’s a high chance I can wipe them out within the operating time, depending on how I handle the situation.
But, waiting for the former—the reinforcements—is the real problem.
What is the scale of the reinforcements coming?
If Maya’s warlord is currently deploying a force of up to 10,000, 5,000 are likely tied up in the invasion of the old Royal Capital. Plus, they have to station troops in the places they’ve occupied so far. If that’s about fifty per location, and they’ve conquered nearly a hundred villages and towns, they would need another 5,000.
That leaves zero surplus troops. If they push it, maybe they could squeeze out a thousand from the Royal Capital campaign.
Thinking logically, a force of 10,000 includes logistics personnel and engineers, and they must have Militia in there to take care of the soldiers and horses’ food.
I can’t deny the possibility that there are Maya warlord sympathizers somewhere. After all, this was originally their country.
When I reached the inn, Thomas was waiting.
”What now?” Thomas asked.
”We have no choice but to go,” I said.
”Just the five of us?” Thomas asked.
The five are me, Thomas, Kenze, Pamela, and Master Sergei. But Master Sergei looks as if he’s wondering if he’s really included in this.
”No. We’re taking your soldiers and the girl who’s acting as my body double, too,” I said.
Thomas’s unit of about a hundred soldiers is stationed here in Twanste as the personal guard for Thiele, who carries the blood of the Larland royal family. Thiele herself is currently at the Grand Principality of Cain, so the girl here is just a body double.
It’s time for a strategy meeting. There are three routes from here to Trabius: East, Central, and West. The choice depends on which villages we pass through.
”We’ll take the East route. My carriage and the Horseback will go ahead; the Infantry and the transport wagons will follow. Put the girls in the wagons,” I said.
”Why?” Thomas asked.
”My intuition,” I replied.
”What the hell is that?” Thomas asked.
Thomas looks dumbfounded, but I’m convinced they’re waiting for reinforcements. If so, they’ll come from the closest point, the old Royal Capital, or if it’s further, from the south—the home base of Maya’s warlord. Either way, they’ll be approaching Trabius from the southwest. That means they must have people stationed on the western road to keep anyone who could harm their reinforcements away. I doubt they’d put anything more than scouts on the other routes. But I don’t have time to explain this to a muscle-brain.
”Regardless, the advance unit departs in two hours,” I said.
”Just in case, I’ll have a liaison run down the Rus road to notify Cain and the folks back home,” Thomas suggested.
I nod at Thomas’s suggestion; it might end up being useless, but it’s worth doing.
”Hey, what is that getup?” Thomas asked.
”This is my battle gear,” I said.
True, I wanted the leather armor I wore during the battle at Vod Fortress, but I didn’t bring it. I borrowed what I could find at this inn and made special Combat sandals for my feet, based on what Bours-san taught me. That was the only thing I brought with me. I slung my gun belt across my chest and hung the Coilgun on my back.
”You don’t look like a head of state, but, well, whatever,” Thomas said.
I prepared the carriage and reserve horses in front of the inn. Then Thomas arrived, dressed in the white-based General’s uniform we made in the Grand Principality, followed by the Master in the black attire of an Old Master, both on horseback.
”What is that outfit? You planning to die without wearing any armor?” I asked.
I warned the two of them for being defenseless.
”Idiot, I’m wearing Chainmail underneath,” Thomas replied.
”Me too,” Sergei said.
Fine, I suppose. I wish they’d worn leather armor at least—I’d be in trouble if they died. Behind them, two carriages and a column of Infantry arrived.
”Larry, say something inspiring to them,” Thomas said.
What is this unreasonable demand? But, well, it can’t be helped. I jumped onto the carriage and faced the Soldiers.
”A formal address from His Excellency, the Fee Grand Duke! Listen up!” Thomas shouted.
A formal address? I have no choice but to act it out.
”I am the one known as Sammy I, Larry von Fee Grand Duke,” I announced.
When I raised my voice, the Soldiers saluted in unison. I couldn’t help but reflexively salute back.
”Trabius, the gateway from Larland to our Fee Grand Principality, has been besieged by Maya Curie, the Marshal of the interim government,” I declared.
I scanned the crowd to see if anyone looked guilty at the mention of “Marshal,” but everyone seemed fine.
”She told me: Once Larland settles down, she will occupy the Fee Grand Principality,” I continued.
The Soldiers started to murmur.
”Yes. And after that, she said Trabius is originally Larland territory, so hand it over. But we cannot hand over the Trabius we fought for to someone with such ambition!” I shouted.
I heard shouts of “That’s right!”
”Right now, there are only twenty Town guards and thirty garrison soldiers in Trabius. We are heading there now to relieve them. The enemy consists of the Marshal’s Soldiers. They will eventually invade our country. When that happens, our families might become Slaves, or be toyed with and killed. We must never allow such a future! Defeat them, bring prosperity to the Grand Principality, and justice is on our side!” I concluded.
When I thrust my fist into the air, a cheer erupted. I feel like I might have gone too far. Because of my words, some of these people might lose their lives.
”I will relay the details now. Non-commissioned officers, step forward!” Thomas ordered.
Thomas got off his horse and started giving detailed instructions to the Infantry.
”Wait a second.”
Isabella, wearing the black uniform of Schweilitz, stood in front of my carriage with five Cavalry soldiers wearing the same outfit but different rank insignia.
”I’m not trying to get in your way. Our mission is to see you safely to Schweilitz. We can’t have you dying on us, so we’re providing an escort,” Isabella said.
Are they actually on our side?
”We’re taking them with us, too,” Thomas muttered.
Looks like they’re bringing the wagon train as well. I noticed one large cargo wagon that wouldn’t look out of place holding Golems.
”That’s more than I could ask for, but are you sure?” I asked.
My honest feelings slipped out.
”It’s fine. I won’t get the Death Penalty for exceeding my authority. I’m a commissioned officer, after all,” Isabella replied.
”That’s not a funny joke. Besides, I refuse the company,” I said.
If they come with us, our chances of survival increase, but her subordinates might die for another country in a land they don’t know.
”Even if you refuse, I’m coming. It’s my mission,” Isabella insisted.
”Do what you want,” I muttered.
As we were having that exchange, the townspeople gathered, drawn by the commotion. Among them were military police and field hospital staff.
”Now, move out!” I shouted.
I stood on the coachman bench and shouted.
If I knew this many people were going to show up, I should have worn proper clothes instead of that leather gear. A bit embarrassing.
Also. Even though I said what I said earlier, I made sure to salute Isabella when I passed by her.
After exiting the gates of Twanste, I urged the carriage forward. If reinforcements arrive and Trabius falls, all of this will have been for nothing. Anyway, we must hurry.

Summary:
Larry reaches the village but is immediately jarred awake from a dream by news of a siege at Trabius. After meeting the orphaned sisters who brought the warning, he secures military backing from the Inspector General Josef von Möller to intervene against the Maya warlord. The situation ends with a cryptic invitation from Josef, leaving Larry’s immediate tactical move unresolved.
Larry prepares to depart Twanste for the besieged town of Trabius, navigating complex social dynamics with the Inspector General, his daughter Doris, and an unexpected escort from Isabella. He assembles a small but determined force, including Thomas, his soldiers, and a body double, while planning his route based on tactical intuition regarding enemy reinforcements. The chapter concludes with his departure, marked by a dramatic and perhaps slightly performative speech to his troops.
—
Trivia:
The Finno-Samic language is distinct from the Rus spoken in Trabius.
Isabella’s promotion to lieutenant signifies the ongoing professionalization of the military.
Larry maintains a cover as a Magic Academy professor, which provides a potential path to normalcy he consciously rejects.
Josef von Möller’s cooperation is driven by his personal frustration with the deteriorating discipline within Marshal Maya’s army.
The Inspector General is a veteran who is quite open about his fetishes, including the ‘sister-bowl’ concept.
Larry was a classmate of Doris at the Bizan Magic School.
The troops stationed in Twanste are technically the personal guard for Thiele, though Thiele herself is away.
Larry is currently using a custom set of Combat sandals as his primary footwear for the mission.
Isabella of Schweilitz is insistent on escorting Larry to fulfill her mission, despite his refusal.
