Volume 6 Chapter 10 Risa’s Mother Visits the Tatemiya Estate

Edited by: Kanaa-senpai

Risa had been staying in the annex of the Tatemiya family estate for one week.

Since the day her mother arrived and we did a brief, formal visit to the Naruse family estate, none of our group had gone to their grounds. Our daily dungeon training stayed on hold. It was a good chance, so I asked Hinoki to make more Majo’s Tears.

Still, being away from home for a full week brought its own problems. Managing the nightly arrangements was tiring, and there was the issue of Risa’s health to think about.

So, after talking it over with the group, we decided that Risa would rotate between the members’ homes. She would spend a few nights at Yurina’s house first, then stay at Asari’s place after.

While we were all packing Risa’s bags to go to Yurina’s, the Snow flies suddenly started making a ruckus. The ones inside the annex began flashing with a harsh, glaring light, completely different from their usual, gentle nightlight glow.

 ”What is it? What’s wrong?”

Bzzzt. They flew close to me, flapping their wings to get my attention. Hinoki translated for me.

’Visitor. Sounds like a nasty piece of work’

 ”Nasty?”

’Big sis’s mother. The type who doesn’t listen to reason’

 ”…Oh boy…”

’Apparently, she’s waitin’ at the gate’

 ”Got it. I’m headin’ out.”

Honestly, I wanted to pretend I wasn’t home. But if I left her out there, there was no telling what she might do. The fear of the unknown. I had to drive her off while she was still at least semi-rational.

 ”Risa.”

 ”Hm? What is it?”

Risa, Yurina, and Minoru’s younger sisters, who were in the room, all looked toward us, wondering what was happening.

 ”Your mother is here, apparently.”

 ”!? Seriously—…”

”I’m gonna handle it, so come with me.”

 ”Okay.”

I asked Kotoha to prepare some tea. The rest were told to wait in the annex, and the two of us headed for the gate. Even from a distance, I could tell. That figure was definitely Risa’s mother.

Snow flies were dancing both inside and outside the gate.

Inside were the Snow flies that belonged to the Poplar swarm. Outside were the ones that weren’t under my control, probably brought by Mother.

The estate grounds had a barrier to prevent Aberrations from entering, so they couldn’t just walk in. The flashing lights were likely those Snow flies communicating through the gate. Maybe something like, Long time no see, how are you?

’No, they’re starin’ each other down, boss. It’s a hair-trigger atmosphere’

The situation was worse than I thought. They were part of the same swarm just days ago — is there really that much hostility? Well, they’re a group of insects following that person. They probably have stronger personalities than the Poplar ones.

As I approached, the Snow flies parted, opening a path.

’Go ahead and take care of it, boss, they’re sayin’.’

No, I’m not going to “take care of” her. Conversation comes first.

’As expected of our boss, so magnanimous! Watch yourself! is what they say.’

I don’t know how to react to that. Well, I get the bugs’ attitude. If we could end this peacefully, that would be best, but—

”Hello. What brings you here today?”

”I have come to see my daughter.”

 ”Understood. Let’s talk over there.”

I guided her to the small flowerbed space outside the gate, which had a bench for receiving guests. Mother followed without protest.

Mother and daughter sat on the bench, leaving a subtle gap between them. Risa was the first to speak.

”What’s wrong? Why come to Tatemiya (here)? Is it something important?”

”Isn’t it natural for a mother to greet the home that is taking care of her daughter?”

What she said was true enough, but showing up unannounced was another matter. No, wait. Maybe she had made an appointment? Risa seemed to think so, too.

”Eh… oh, I see. What time was it scheduled for? Who were you meeting? Okaa-san?”

”Nothing like that has been decided. So, could you please take me to her?”

 ”……”

Risa was speechless for a moment, then rebooted in a few seconds. She opened her mouth.

 ”That’s, um, a little…”

”A brief greeting shouldn’t be an issue, should it?”

 ”……”

I could see Risa glancing at me with a look of Help!

”I apologize, but Okaa-san is busy with other tasks right now. I’m sorry you went to the trouble of coming all this way, but it’s not really possible to—”

”I see? It can’t be helped. It was my fault for coming so suddenly.”

Her mother sighed, phew, and shifted her gaze away from me. If she knew it was sudden, she should have contacted us beforehand.

”That aside, Risa, it isn’t good to keep imposing on them forever. Why don’t you come back?”

 ”It’s fine. A week or two isn’t a problem.”

”Tatemiya-san, please don’t feel obligated. In reality, I’m sure it’s a burden for them, Risa. Let’s go home.”

She brushed off my defense and tried to drag Risa away. Even though she must suspect that Risa left specifically to avoid her, she was being incredibly forceful.

”It’s really fine. Don’t worry about it.”

 ”But…”

Mother started to continue her argument. At that perfect moment, silhouettes appeared from the gate. Kotoha, and… Okaa-san?

Kotoha was carrying tea on a tray, and Okaa-san was dressed in farming attire. She looked like she had rushed over from the fields in a hurry.

”Welcome. I am Minoru’s mother. It is a pleasure to meet you. Thank you for always taking care of Minoru. My apologies for receiving you in such a state.”

”No, the sudden visit was on my part. I am Risa’s mother. The pleasure is mine; thank you for looking after my daughter.”

With my mother, a Majo of the same generation, stepping out, even Mother changed her tone. The haughty attitude she had shown earlier seemed to fade.

”Actually, the inside of the house is quite a mess right now, and it’s in no state to host guests. Please, let us talk here for today.”

 ”Please, don’t worry about it.”

Kotoha served tea to everyone. After a brief breather, the conversation resumed.

”I apologize for the long-term imposition Risa has been placing on you.”

”Oh, no, it’s no imposition at all.”

”Isn’t over a week a bit too long? I was thinking it might be time for her to return.”

 ”Is that so?”

Okaa-san’s eyes flickered toward me and Risa for a moment.

”As for us, Minoru is poor at cooking and sloppy with chores, so having Risa-san here is a huge help. Our whole family, Minoru included, is impressed by her cooking skills.”

”I am glad if she is of any help, but on another note, there are expenses, aren’t there? The costs of food and utilities add up, and it’s not exactly cheap.”

”We grow various vegetables at home, so the ingredients are taken care of. Actually, we are grateful that you eat them so deliciously. …Oh, that’s right, Kotoha, could you go get some potatoes and green onions as a souvenir? Pick out some good ones from the pile by the entrance. Risa-san, could you help her?”

 ”Yeah! Let’s go! Risa-oneechan.”

Kotoha, reading the room, grabbed Risa’s hand and dragged her inside the gate. As soon as Risa was out of sight, Mother’s tone changed again.

”There are things regarding Inherent sorcery that I need to teach Risa. Now, while I am here, is the best time. I know it’s selfish of me. I am well aware that there were problems with how I treated Risa in the past, but I want to pass this knowledge on to her.”

”Oh? I heard that Risa-san does not possess Inherent sorcery.”

”It can sometimes manifest later in life. Knowledge of Inherent sorcery is a power in itself, even if one cannot use it in practice.”

”I believe that is true, but…”

Okaa-san glanced at me for a split second before returning her focus and speaking.

”I understand your feelings well. However, please prioritize the progression of the relationship between Risa-san and Minoru for now. Risa-san’s progress lately has been remarkable. In the near future, I believe Risa-san will become Minoru’s Majo. The Naruse family estate producing a Majo is the highest priority.”

Becoming a Majo. That meant she would be able to bear a male child, and the Naruse family estate would be recognized as a family of sorcerers. To plain-folk with money and power, it was the ultimate medal of honor.

However, Mother originally came from a family of sorcerers. It seemed she felt less strongly about prioritizing that.

”Even so, I am the one who needs to pass it on now.”

”Are you saying you would sacrifice the chance to become a Majo?”

 ”That is correct.”

 ”…I see…”

Okaa-san looked at me, as if asking, What should we do? This was my cue to chime in.

”Mother, why do you want to give this knowledge to Risa?”

”…So that Risa will not struggle in the future. I want to convey the information I possess.”

”If I may be so bold, I don’t believe what you’re trying to do is urgent or important. Spending time with us is far more useful than gaining sorcery knowledge from you. Besides, you’ve had plenty of chances to teach her before, haven’t you? During our visit to District 5 recently, and even before that. Do you know how much Risa struggled after entering High School with insufficient knowledge as a sorcerer?”

”I am reflecting on that as well. My behavior until now was a failure as a parent. That is why. Now, I want to do something that a parent should.”

The content was noble, and if she had truly changed her heart, it was something to welcome. However, I couldn’t bring myself to trust her words completely.

”That might ease your conscience. But what about Risa’s feelings? Her mother suddenly changed her ways and is trying to close the distance. Can you imagine how she feels? Do you really think your words are reaching her clearly in this state?”

”I know. …I don’t mind if she resents me. This is all I can do.”

”Then all the more reason to wait a little longer. Until Risa is able to listen to your words with an open heart.”

”Do you truly believe a day like that will come?”

”I think it depends on your attitude. If you change your heart and treat Risa well, she will eventually forgive you. Or rather, in the worst case, I am prepared to instruct Risa to listen to you as the group leader.”

 ”……”

Mother went silent, perhaps thinking something over. Just then, Kotoha and the others returned.

 ”We brought them!”

”It might be a bit too much.”

The plastic bag Risa was carrying was stuffed with green onions, Chinese cabbage, and potatoes.

 ”Mother, here.”

”…Thank you. …I’m sorry. Thank you so much for all these wonderful things.”

”It’s fine. We grew them ourselves. They don’t look like much, but they taste good, so please.”

Mother stood up, accepted the vegetable set, looked at Risa, and spoke to her.

”Make sure you don’t cause everyone any trouble.”

 ”I know.”

”Then, I will be going now. I’m glad I could see your face. …When you have time, come home.”

 ”Yeah…”

Mother shifted her gaze from Risa to Okaa-san.

 ”Please look after my daughter.”

”I will take responsibility for her. Please rest assured.”

”You too, please look after my daughter.”

 ”Yes.”

”I look forward to you becoming a Majo.”

 ”Yeah.”

Finally, she called out to me and Risa, bowed her head, and when she raised it, she walked back, looking reluctant to leave.

A car was stopped at the end of the private road. It seemed she had come all the way here in a Naruse family estate car.

Confirming the car had left, everyone entered the gate, and we finally caught our breath.

”Ah… I was so nervous… Is Risa-oneechan’s Mother always this intense?”

”Hey, even if you think that, you shouldn’t say it out loud.”

Okaa-san chided Kotoha for her blunt remark.

 ”But still…”

 Kotoha continued.

”That person’s words were all lies, weren’t they?”

 ”…Well, yeah.”

To begin with, the moment she stepped through the gate, she had used Inherent sorcery on me and Risa. It was problematic enough that the Snow flies, sensing her hostile intent, were moving to intercept and eliminate her.

Was it Oboroka sorcery? She probably tried to manipulate our thoughts. It was a good thing I had obtained countermeasures from Anri-san.

”Smiling on the outside, attacking on the inside. In a way, she’s a very ‘sorcerer-like’ person. Risa’s mother.”

 ”Is that a compliment?”

”A little bit of a compliment, and the rest is sarcasm. As someone who will be family in the future, I can’t trust her… The worst part is that her hidden agenda is easily seen through by nobodies like us.”

Realizing that we wouldn’t listen to her no matter what, she noticed her sorcery was being resisted and left. All while keeping up appearances with plausible words.

Judging by this exchange, I was very worried about Mama, who had stayed at the Naruse family estate. If she were being manipulated, it would be a nightmare.

Risa seemed to think the same.

”Can we go home once, just to check on things?”

”Yeah. Let’s all go see how things are at the Naruse family estate.”

Afterward, the six of us in the group moved to the Naruse family estate. Mama, who came to greet us, looked a bit thinner, perhaps from the stress. But there were no signs in her speech or actions that she was being controlled.

When we asked, it turned out that Papa had sent a magic tool beforehand, which apparently neutralized the Oboroka sorcery. We were relieved that they had taken precautions.

Taking this opportunity, I had Risa ask Mother about the Inherent sorcery while under our supervision. The excuse Mother had used earlier to come pick up Risa — we managed to crush that, so that was a plus. Though she would probably come up with some other excuse to bother Risa.

That day, the whole group had dinner at the Naruse family estate. Mother did not join us for the meal, which featured dishes made by Mama.

 Summary:

Minoru and his group deal with a tense, unannounced visit from Risa’s mother at the Tatemiya estate, where she attempts to use subtle sorcery to manipulate them. Minoru’s mother successfully de-escalates the immediate pressure by serving tea and distracting the visitor. Later, the group investigates the Naruse estate to ensure Minoru’s mother is safe from similar manipulation.

 —

 Trivia:

1 The Snow flies function as a sensory network for the estate and exhibit a distinct, collective hive-mind personality that respects Minoru as their leader.

2 The Naruse family estate is actively seeking to produce a Majo to gain prestige, which is the primary reason Mother is so persistent about her influence over Risa.

3 Minoru’s family is prepared to use counter-sorcery measures, such as the magic tool provided by his father, to protect themselves against unwelcome manipulative intrusions.
